As it becomes clear that the Trump administration will not recognize the democratic process in Venezuela, and seeks to overthrow the Maduro government by violent means, the many revolutionary organizations of the Bolivarian Revolution are discussing what must happen to defend their national sovereignty. The Gayones Movement, a Marxist-Leninist labor group, put out this statement in February to elaborate their position on the current crisis, and why they will be supporting Nicolás Maduro in the April presidential elections. Denver, CO – More than 50 people gathered in Denver’s Civic Center Park, Feb. 7, and marched to U.S. Senator Michael Bennett’s office. The protesters are frustrated over his lack of action to defend DACA – Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals.
St Paul, MN – The Saint Paul Federation of Teachers (SPFT) says that educators will strike beginning Feb. 13, if no settlement is reached in ongoing contract talks with the Saint Paul Public Schools (SPPS).
Minneapolis, MN – Freedom Road Socialist Organization (FRSO) Political Secretary Steff Yorek called for protests at President Trump’s proposed Washington, DC military parade. Speaking to Fight Back! on Feb. 7, Yorek stated, “Trump’s military parade cannot be separated from preparations for war on the Korean peninsula, and other places. At a time when the U.S. is waging wars around the world, there is no reason why those of us who support peace with justice should allow Trump’s display of military might in D.C. to go forward unimpeded.”
Chicago, IL – 75 people gathered at a Black History Month event sponsored by Freedom Road Socialist Organization (FRSO), Feb. 3. They chanted, clapped and sang along to the Black National Anthem, Lift Every Voice as the program began.
Minneapolis, MN – Braving sub-zero temperatures, more than 500 people protesting police brutality, racism and corporate greed gathered in south Minneapolis at Peavey Park and marched U.S. Bank Stadium, the site of the Super Bowl, Feb. 4. Upon arriving at the stadium, hundreds of participants took a knee to show their opposition to racist police terror.
Jacksonville FL – With the emergence of the Me Too movement, there has been a solid wave of solidarity among survivors of sexual abuse which has ultimately created a positive momentum regarding an otherwise silent topic. The topic of sexual violence however, can oftentimes be very dangerous to discuss publicly. Coalition for Consent is a local group in Jacksonville that fights to educate people about consent and help survivors of sexual violence. CFC has hosted a variety of actions and events from rallies to workshops for survivors.
Minneapolis, MN – On Feb. 4, Minneapolis will host a protest against racist police brutality and the sell-out of the city to greedy NFL owners and corporate sponsors. The demonstration, organized by the Super Bowl Anti-Racist Anti-Corporation Coalition (SAAC), will bring together more than 20 local community organizations, for a rally will start at Peavey Park (Franklin & Chicago Ave), at 3 p.m., to be followed by a march to U.S. Bank Stadium.
St. Paul, MN — By an overwhelming majority, members of the Saint Paul Federation of Teachers (SPFT) voted to authorize a strike Jan. 31. Approximately two-thirds of members voted at the InterContinental Hotel in downtown Saint Paul. Of the votes, 82.0% of school and community service professionals, 89.5% of educational assistants, and 85.1% of teachers and licensed staff voted yes to authorize a strike.
Jacksonville, FL – On Jan. 29, over 250 people came out to Hemming Plaza in Downtown Jacksonville to demand that Confederate monuments honoring white supremacists and slave holders be taken down and the renaming of schools named after Confederate generals.
Tampa, FL – Over 30 people gathered near Cooper Hall at the University of South Florida, Jan. 23, for a Donald Trump piñata bash. The event was put on by Tampa Students for a Democratic Society as a show of resistance one year after the inauguration of Donald Trump. Uniting under the slogan “Bash Trump’s racism and austerity,” attendance largely consisted of USF students but also included members of the Tampa community.
Chicago, IL – More than three years after the death of Laquan McDonald in Chicago, his killer, Jason Van Dyke, will be going on trial in the coming weeks or months. In preparation, the Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression has issued the following statement announcing their plan to protest outside the court house on that day. The Alliance is asking for endorsers, for activists in the region to travel to Chicago that day, and for activists in cities further away to hold solidarity rallies.
