Olando protest against anti-trans legislation.

Orlando, FL – On Saturday, April 15, many organizations came together to continue the fight for LGBTQ rights in Florida. Recent bills, like an expanded Don’t Say Gay bill, are targeting the LGBTQ community generally, while other bills, like SB 254, are specifically attacking trans rights. This protest came after a recent mobilization to Orlando city council’s public comment period where it was found that the local government is not acting to protect its large LGBTQ population. A crowd of around 35 people attended the rally.

Orlando protest against anti-trans legislation.

Orlando, FL – On Saturday, March 11, multiple organizations rallied together in support of LGBTQ rights outside the Orlando City Hall. The event responded to the growing attacks that LGBTQ people face every day and the recent anti-trans legislation moving through the Florida legislature. The rally was attended by around 250 people.

Orlando, FL – On March 4, members of the Freedom Road Socialist Organization (FRSO) and the Orlando Liberation Initiative (OLI) held a speak out to commemorate International Women’s Day, a holiday honoring the contributions of women to the people’s struggle. With attacks on reproductive rights intensifying, the activists gathered to speak on the history of International Women’s Day, the current state of the women’s movement internationally, and how to fight back against gender-based oppression, especially in Florida, which is leading the crusade against reproductive rights.

Orlando, FL – On March 9, University of Central Florida (UCF) students participated in a solidarity action for the Tampa 4, a group of activists with University of South Florida (USF) Students for a Democratic Society that were brutalized by USF Police Department and arrested for protesting outside the university president's office.

FRSO event on Puerto Rican independence movement featuring speakers from the You

Orlando, FL – On Saturday February 18, the Orlando chapter of the Freedom Road Socialist Organization (FRSO) hosted a panel on the Puerto Rican independence movement featuring speakers from the Young Lords, a revolutionary organization dedicated to uplifting the Puerto Rican community and fighting for independence since 1968. The panel speakers included David Rivera, a founding member of the Young Lords, and Gabe Marcano, a Florida leader in the New-Era Young Lords, as well as Laura Rodriguez, a Puerto Rican member of FRSO. The event began with the speakers sharing their background in activism, explaining the history of the struggle for Puerto Rican Independence and offering lessons to further the movement. The event was attended by more than 20 people which filled the event space and led to an engaged audience question-and-answer session.

Orlando, FL – The Florida Education Association (FEA) held their 2011 Delegate Assembly Oct. 27-29 at the Rosen Centre Hotel of Orlando, Florida, with the theme of “We Are One – Union Strong.” The event opened with the famous IWW Solidarity Forever union song and was attended by more than 600 delegates from all over the state of Florida.
