Milwaukee, WI – Occupy the Hood, Milwaukee began a new program they call “Urban Community Based Physical Training.” On April 7, for the second Saturday in a row, members of Occupy the Hood and community members have exercised together in the schoolyard of the abandoned Phillis Wheatley Elementary School on 20th Street and Meinecke Avenue.

At 1:00 pm on Saturday, the South Side will rally on 27th Street and National Avenue, near M&I Bank, while the North Side rallies on 26th Street and Wisconsin Avenue, near US Bank.

State government here is considering a bill, SB207/AB286, that will permanently economically disenfranchise over 62,000 Wisconsinites who have been convicted of felonies. The bill makes it legal for employers to discriminate against them, not only in the hiring process, but also to terminate them from jobs where they are already employed whether or not their felony conviction is substantially related to the job. It would also ban cities and municipalities from creating laws to protect constituents from this type of discrimination. The bill has already passed the Assembly and is on its way to becoming law.

Milwaukee, WI – On May 1, tens of thousands of people will converge here to march for immigrants’ and workers’ rights. Demonstrators will say “no” to an anti-immigrant SB1070 copycat bill [SB1070 is the Arizona law that tells law enforcement to routinely check papers of ‘suspected illegal immigrants’] in Wisconsin and “yes” to in-state tuition for undocumented Wisconsin students. The will stand against attacks on education, healthcare and collective bargaining rights.

Pewaukee, WI – 1500 demonstrators lined the street outside of Country Springs Hotel, March 7 to protest against Governor Scott Walker’s appearance with right-wing radio talk show host Charlie Sykes. Firefighters, teachers, healthcare workers, sheet metal workers and students chanted “Recall Walker!” and “Union rights are under attack! What do we do? Stand up, fight back!” as passing cars honked to the rhythm of “Kill-the-bill! Kill the bill!”

Students hold signs and protest against Rebecca Kleefish

Waukesha, WI – Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), along with other student groups, held a Speak Out Against Racism! demonstration in response to a recent rise of white supremacist graffiti on the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha campus. The graffiti included swastikas and the initials “KKK.” The graffiti had previously been addressed by the university administration only with a mass email warning of a possible “written reprimand, loss of a privilege, or community service” for the perpetrator.

Milwaukee, WI – Around 100 people, mostly Chicanos and Mexicanos, marched through downtown here, July 29, to protest racist Arizona’s SB1070 and HB2281 laws. They held banners reading, “We will not comply,” and, “We are ALL immigrants.”

Shorewood, WI – Students and community members will rally July 20 in support of a Black high school student who was arrested for allegedly stealing chicken nuggets valued at $2.60 from the school cafeteria. The chicken nuggets were given to Adam Hernandez by another student who did not want them, but school administrators called in police to handcuff and arrest Adam.
