Thousands rally in St. Paul to support Wisconsin workers
St. Paul, MN – Nearly 2000 people gathered at the state capitol building here, Feb. 26, to support the fight of Wisconsin workers. The noon rally brought out a broad spectrum of trade unions, including the American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees and Teamsters. Members of Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) and other progressive organizations also participated.
Linden Gawboy, of the Minnesota Coalition for a People’s Bailout said, “It’s important that all working people stand with the workers of Wisconsin. They are doing something really big, standing up against one of the nastiest attempts at union busting in decades. They’re defending their rights and all of us have a stake in the outcome of this.”
Some Minnesota trade unionists traveled to Wisconsin, for the massive rally that was held in Madison. Members of the AFSCME Local 3800, the clerical workers union at the University of Minnesota, were among them.
A statement from AFSCME Local 3800 notes, “AFSCME Local 3800 stands with you in your struggle. As we have learned in our battles against obstinate administrators and politicians in Minnesota, power concedes nothing without a determined struggle. You are on the right track and if you continue, you will win.”
