Thousands march on May 1 for immigrant and worker rights in Minneapolis

Minneapolis, MN – On May 1, about 4,000 people marched in the streets of Minneapolis for immigrant and workers rights. One march started from Martin Luther King Park in South Minneapolis and marched up Nicollet Avenue toward downtown. As the march passed through largely-Latino neighborhoods, more people joined the march on each block.
The march went over four miles from the park to downtown Minneapolis to protest outside the Convention Center. Inside the center, the Minnesota Republican Party had their convention in which they nominated their gubernatorial candidate, Tom Emmer, who said this week he thought Arizona's racist anti-immigrant law SB 1070 is “wonderful.”
Outside the convention center, the marchers denounced Emmer and politicians from both parties who attack immigrants. Another group of immigrant rights marchers who had begun their march downtown also joined in at the convention center for a united march to Loring Park where everyone rallied together. Speakers at the rally emphasized the need for legalization and full equality for all undocumented immigrants and also denounced Arizona's new SB 1070 law.
