<![CDATA[Emergency protest after the ICE detention of two immigrants after their immigration court hearing.

New Orleans, LA - On April 17, 30 community members gathered outside of the New Orleans immigration court to protest the detention of two immigrants after their hearing on the morning of April 16. The emergency rally demanded an end to ICE presence in the immigration courts and respect for immigrants’ due process rights.

The detainees, a mother and father, were present for a routine hearing. They were detained in front of their children in a traumatic display of aggression by ICE agents.

!--more--

“People heard screaming and crying. When they went to investigate, they saw the mother and father being taken away and their children were left behind,” said Rachel Taber, an organizer with Union Migrante, who called the emergency rally.

Protesters held signs that read, “Say no to deportations” and chanted “ICE out of NOLA now!” as tourists walked by, pumping fists and waving in support.

The immigration court is located in the same mall as Tiffany & Co. and Louis Vuitton, a cruel reminder that the exact same place can mean wealth and privilege for the few and incarceration and deportation for the many.

“We’ve had people here observing the immigration hearings, every day without fail, since ICE agents started coming to the court last spring. This is the first arrest at the 365 Canal Place court we’ve seen in a long time. If you don’t come to court, there's an automatic order for deportation, so it's like you're damned if you do, damned if you don't,” said Taber.

Ordinary people continue to engage in court watch and ICE watch activities in New Orleans. One attendee at the protest noticed two suspicious men taking pictures of the crowd and promptly confronted them.

“I followed them as they walked to their vehicle and asked what they were doing. They told me to mind my own business and fuck off. So, I took a picture of them and their license plate, so we can share with other ICE observers in the city,” he said, immediately notifying the crowd to be on the lookout for plainclothes agents.

Speakers emphasized the need for our movements to continue to demand full democratic rights for immigrants in the United States. “As we keep rallying and keep fighting, we need to demand justice and legalization for all,” emphasized Deborah Alvarenga, an organizer with Union Migrante.

#NewOrleansLA #LA #ImmigrantRights #ICE #Featured

div id="sharingbuttons.io"/div]]>

Portland protests at mayor’s home to demand action against ICE

<![CDATA[

Portland, OR - On April 4, angry protesters marched to Portland Mayor Keith Wilson’s house, demanding he revoke the conditional land use permit for the ICE detention facility. The protest, organized by Portland Contra las Deportaciones (PDXCD), began at Wilshire Park and drew a crowd of over 50 in front of the mayor’s home.

!--more--

The city of Portland issued a land use violation of the permit to the facility on Macadam Avenue in September 2025, after public pressure as the city faced threats of the deployment of the National Guard. Since then, Wilson has allowed landowner Stuart Lindquist to stall the process and appeal the violation to delay any consequences.

In March, the ICE facility landowner, Lindquist, rescinded his appeal to the city’s upholding of the land use violation, meaning Portland officials can begin enforcing the fine at any time. Protesters condemn the lack of enforcement by their city leaders.

During this time, Portland has faced increased immigration enforcement with violent detentions peaking in the fall of 2025. In January 2026, two immigrants were shot by ICE in Portland, and many others faced unlawful and brutal kidnappings.

Andrew Nourie with Freedom Road Socialist Organization told the crowd, “For the last year, Portland has been under attack by the federal government. The people have demanded action from our mayor and the city government, and in response we’ve received silence and a clear commitment to business as usual.”

PDXCD has sent over 1000 emails to the mayor requesting he take action and heard nothing from him for months. After protesters marched to his home in early February, his team reached out to the organization to coordinate a meeting.

Isabella Shepherd, one of the founding members of the campaign to Revoke the ICE Permit, said at the rally: “He insisted on bringing 15 other people \[to the meeting\] from other groups to argue with the four of us he allowed us to bring, so he wouldn’t have to say any of his own vile opinions out loud himself.”

Members of the campaign say the meeting made it clear the mayor is committed to keeping the ICE facility open, which is why they’ve returned to protest at his house.

The crowd chanted, “Keith Wilson, do your job!” as they occupied the street in front of his home for over an hour. Cars driving by honked their support, and a small crowd of supportive neighbors and passersby formed on a nearby street.

Activists dumped spent munitions ICE used on protesters during this last year on the front porch of the mayor’s house, yelling “No justice, no peace!” saying there will not be peace at home for Wilson while immigrants are terrorized by ICE in their homes.

Sage Joyce with PDXCD said the group brought the canisters because “Keith Wilson should not have freedom from chemical munitions he allows to be used against Portlanders who dare to stand up to ICE!”

Organizers said they are determined to keep up pressure on the city of Portland to move forward in the land use violation process for the ICE facility.

#PortlandOR #OR #ImmigrantRights #ICE #PDXCD #KeithWilson #Featured

div id="sharingbuttons.io"/div]]>

Tallahassee defeats city commission, wins right to bring signs to City Hall

<![CDATA[Public comment section of Tallahassee City Commission meeting.

Tallahassee, FL – On February 18, the Tallahassee City Commission’s meeting marked a win for organizers, who were allowed to wield signs protesting the city’s collaboration with ICE in defiance of the commission’s attempts to repress them. At the previous meeting in January, the city commission and Tallahassee Police Department tried to illegally confiscate the signs of attendees, and conservative Mayor John Dailey ended the meeting early when they refused to comply.

!--more--

Even though the city commission only gives each attendee three minutes to speak, the huge crowd that packed the January 14 meeting still managed to talk to the commission for almost three hours about the overwhelming public opposition to TPD’s 287(g) agreement with ICE and the city’s decision to sell land containing the unmarked graves of enslaved people to a notoriously racist country club. That should have taught Mayor Dailey that the city needed to listen to the people of Tallahassee, but instead he decided the problem was letting the public speak at all.

At the start of February’s meeting, the commission voted to limit public comment to 30 minutes, only hearing the first ten speakers who sign up, even though public comment comes at the end of a full day of meetings. To make sure that you can speak to the city commission, you now have to show up at 2 or 3 p.m. on a Wednesday, in the middle of the workday, and sit through hours of bureaucracy until around 6 p.m. to be allowed to talk. This effectively bans working-class people from being heard by their city government and represents a clear escalation in the struggle between the commission’s conservative majority and Tallahassee’s growing immigrant rights movement.

Organizers and community members continued to stand up to the commission’s attacks on free speech. Residents hid 8.5 x 11 signs in their pockets denouncing the 287(g) agreement, pulling them out when speakers finally came up.

Mayor Dailey, shaken by the presence of journalists in the room, was forced to back down and allow the signs rather than threaten to arrest attendees again for expressing their anger with the city’s inaction. Visibly exasperated, he tried to play this weakness off as generosity, saying that these signs were “fine, because they’re a regular sheet of paper.” Speakers wasted no time in calling out his hypocrisy, pointing out that the signs hadn’t changed at all - what had changed was the unpopularity of the city’s repressive tactics.

“We’ve seen an outpouring of civic participation in local government. In a city this small, you guys should be excited to see this level of participation if you cared about democracy,” said Joelle Nuñez, president of the Tallahassee Immigrant Rights Alliance. “But instead your response to people being upset at what you’re doing is to keep pushing more unpopular measures to restrict free speech. We’re trying to open the gates for people to participate, and you’re here actively shutting them. We want a public town hall to talk about 287(g), where we have more than 30 minutes to speak, and we want y’all to listen to us. That’s all.”

Nonprofit founder Stanley Sims, a longtime critic of the commission, pointed out that at a previous meeting a group of white suburbanites had been allowed to bring much larger signs without pushback to protest a planned gas station in their neighborhood, yet the government was silencing citizens who were concerned about issues predominantly affecting Black and Latino people.

Commissioners seemed willing to waver on the 30-minute speaking time limit, at least while the cameras were rolling. Commissioner Jeremy Matlow, a progressive and Dailey’s main competitor in the race for mayor, pressured the conservative majority into relenting and giving all of the registered speakers for this meeting their three minutes.

Commissioner Jack Porter, another progressive, proposed a resolution to revisit the time limit in a public meeting, denouncing the fact that the previous decision was made behind closed doors without public input. This time the conservatives stood their ground, and Commissioners Diane Williams-Cox and Curtis Richardson joined Mayor Dailey in voting the resolution down, citing the same tired complaints about “decorum” that they used to justify shutting down the last meeting.

Delilah Pierre, president of the Tallahassee Community Action Committee, replied, “I’m so tired of the word ‘decorum’, that word that’s just used as an excuse to repress the community. You get to be isolated from the problems that people are facing, but the people who are being murdered by ICE and the people in Tallahassee who are watching graves being built over don’t have time for ‘decorum’ in their lives.”

Pierre continued, “Banning public comment isn't a sign of strength - it’s a sign of your internal weakness. It's a sign that you know that people will show up again and again to call you out because you represent the interests of the Trump administration in Tallahassee, and it’s time that everybody knows about it.”

TIRA will join other community organizations on International Women’s Day, March 8, to march for justice for immigrant women.

Pierre continued, “Banning public comment isn't a sign of strength – it’s a sign of your internal weakness. It's a sign that you know that people will show up again and again to call you out because you represent the interests of the Trump administration in Tallahassee, and it’s time that everybody knows about it.”

TIRA will join other community organizations on International Women’s Day, March 8, to march for justice for immigrant women. For more information, visit TIRA’s pages on Facebook or Instagram (@tlh_ira).

Tacoma, WA: IDEA high school students walk out to protest ICE presence

<![CDATA[By Sterling Peel and Aristeidis Pahoundis

High school students walk out to protest ICE.

Tacoma, WA – On January 12, students at IDEA High School walked out of class to stand up against ICE in their community. Over 100 students marched to a busy intersection and then continued to circle the intersection marching in the crosswalks as passing drivers honked their horns in support.

!--more--

the students carried signs and chanted together "ICE out! We won't go!" as they marched through the crosswalks. When the students returned to the school an hour later, they rallied again on the sidewalk in front of the building expressing their solidarity. This happened in the face of the administration telling them to stay off of school property.

When asked why the students are taking to the streets, Mathilda Cousin said, "I hate ICE, and I hate what they are doing with people. It's awful! They are taking people who are legal citizens, and they are trying to deport them for no reason." Mathilda continued, "I come from a mixed cultural background and just thinking about if ICE tried to deport someone that I love, I hate that! And knowing that that has happened to people, I want to stand with them."

When asked how students are affected by ICE, Roberto Damian Camacho said, “I'm here to protest ICE. It affects me because it's killing my people who did nothing wrong, and it's affecting my other people who don't feel safe to roam the streets anymore.”

Alexander Jacob-Michael Gillis said, “They deported my niece, who is a 9-year-old girl. She's from here. She was born in California, and they deported her all the way ‘back’ to Thailand even though she's not from there.” Alexander continued, “Our leaders aren't doing anything about this. They say they are, but I have seen no action so far. All I've seen is executions by ICE against innocent Americans who are using their First Amendment right to protest and to lawful assembly. It's just really sad.”

Valerian Garzón, a student who was photographing the event, when asked how ICE is affecting students, said, “A large population of the school is Hispanic, myself included. So for me and for a lot of kids at school it's something which has hit very close to home and affected a lot of our community members. I've seen ICE crawling around this neighborhood and around our school several times, as well as hearing stories of family members or community members that have been taken. So it's something that I think hits very close to home for a lot of people here.”

Ella Hibbard said, “I am out here protesting ICE in America and blatant murder and kidnapping of people who just wanna make a living.” Ella continued, “ICE affects my fellow students especially. Especially those who may not be able to have the correct documents. They are still people who belong in a community, and that community is with us and not in some fucked-up prison!”

#TacomaWA #WA #ImmigrantRights #StudentMovement #ICE #HighSchool

div id="sharingbuttons.io"/div]]>

San José demands ICE out of Super Bowl, no killer ICE in San José

<![CDATA[Protest against ICE at the Super Bowl.

San Jose, CA - Over 1000 protesters marched and rallied during the Super Bowl LX, February 8, to demand Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) out of San José. Activists, community organizations and unions rallied against the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) threat to conduct immigration enforcement during the Super Bowl LX.

!--more--

Since Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem first announced in October that ICE would be “all over” the Super Bowl, DHS and ICE have backtracked on their statements that the federal agencies will take part in immigration enforcement during the game. The Community Service Organization San José (CSO SJ) says the backtracking is the result of the grassroots preparation led by a broad coalition against Trump’s Agenda, which put ICE on the retreat.

CSO SJ, along with a broad coalition including the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), San José District of the Freedom Road Socialist Organization, The Services, Immigrant Rights and Education Network (SIREN) and Working Partnerships USA (WPUSA) and other local community organizations and unions, stayed firm in their decision to protest, emphasizing that officials’ assurances of “no mass raids” did not ensure safety from families being torn apart and arrests still occurring.

The rally took place near a local church, then took over the streets to march to an intersection near the stadium. The march included “Ice out” and “End the deportations” banners as well as signs bearing slogans such as “Killer ICE off our streets” and “Legalization for all.” Most notably, the protesters held portraits of Renee Nicole Good and Alex Pretti, demanding justice for the community legal observers who ICE shot and killed in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

“We saw resistance bloom last month in Minneapolis,” said John Duroyan of the Freedom Road Socialist Organization. Duroyan noted the mass upsurge and resistance of the immigrant rights movement throughout the country, after ICE’s escalation of attacks towards Chicano, Mexican and Central American communities regardless of their legal status.

CSO SJ member Pan Breceda, as part of the Legalization for All network (L4A) stated, “CSO SJ fights for reforms like ‘legalization for all’ which will eliminate all basis of discrimination based on legal status.” Braceda noted the anniversary of the Treaty of Guadalupe of Hidalgo and its failures to secure civil and economic rights of Chicanos.

Amongst Braceda’s demands of no more money for ICE and no more deportations, CSO SJ announced the formation of the new San José Coalition Against Trump as an “action-based coalition that will not allow ICE, DHS, CBP or any federal agency to kidnap or harass our immigrant community members during the Super Bowl game and local events.”

The protest was attended by students ranging from high school to university, after an upsurge in student walkouts. Megan Sweet of Students for a Democratic Society SJSU stated that group, “has continued to demand San Jose State University divest from funds withholdings in companies that directly facilitate and profit off of deportation services, border security and mass surveillance.”

SEIU members from Local 521 and United Healthcare Workers, Seema Patel and Tammy Danhota, spoke about Trump’s attacks against workers and oppressed people’s movements.

“I’m here to say that’s not going to happen under our watch; we want ICE to stop all of their deportations,” Danhota stated. “We demand for legalization for all and an end to the criminalization of immigrants,"

Philip Nguyen, a San Jose Against War (SJAW) member, condemned ICE’s use of Israeli surveillance technology against undocumented immigrants.
San Jose, CA – Over 1000 protesters marched and rallied during the Super Bowl LX, February 8, to demand Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) out of San José. Activists, community organizations and unions rallied against the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) threat to conduct immigration enforcement during the Super Bowl LX.

Texas: Leqaa Kordia discharged from hospital, unjustly returned to ICE detention

<![CDATA[Dallas, TX - After being hospitalized for more than 72 hours after a seizure, Leqaa Kordia was discharged and returned to ICE detention, February 9.

During the three days Kordia was hospitalized, neither family nor counsel laid eyes on her, heard her voice, or received any information about her current health status. Kordia’s legal team learned of her location from a journalist who got the information from the Department of Homeland Security.

!--more--

One of her habeas counsel rushed to the location but was denied access to Kordia at the hospital, even by phone. Despite a looming deadline in her immigration case, Kordia’s immigration attorney had also been denied access, even by phone, and despite repeated, written requests.

ICE has been confining Ms. Kordia unlawfully in Prairieland Detention Facility for nearly a year. She is the last Columbia University protestor still in immigration confinement after speaking out about the ongoing genocide in Gaza that has killed nearly 200 of her family members. While in ICE custody, she has struggled with dizziness, fainting episodes, and other signs of poor nutrition on top of blatant violations of her religious liberties.

Kordia is represented in her federal lawsuit by the Texas Civil Rights Project (TCRP), Muslim Advocates (MA), CLEAR, and Waters Kraus Paul & Siegel (WKPS) and in her immigration removal proceedings by the Boston University School of Law Immigrants’ Rights Clinic.

“While we are relieved Leqaa is out of the hospital, we still have no idea what her medical condition is and what happened to her the past three days. Now she is forced back to the nightmarish conditions of ICE detention that put her in the hospital. It has never been more urgent to call for her release,” said Hamzah Abushaban, Leqaa Kordia’s cousin and designated spokesperson.

“We were separated for nearly 20 years, and now my daughter has been snatched away from me and unjustly he’d by ICE for almost a year. Not knowing what hospital she was in, or what condition she was in has been agonizing. Like any other family, we were worried sick,” said Kordia’s mother.

“ICE has yet again demonstrated their inhumane cruelty by disconnecting Leqaa from her loved ones and legal representatives during an extremely critical time, all while risking her health and safety,” said Travis Fife, staff attorney with the Texas Civil Rights Project. “She was detained almost a year ago, and the government continues to punish her excessively and unjustly for exercising her First Amendment rights to assembly and expression.”

“Nearly one year ago, ICE detained Leqaa because she dared to speak out in support of Palestinian liberation. In the midst of a medical crisis, and despite repeated requests and an imminent court deadline, ICE denied her access to her family and to her legal team, in violation of her Constitutional rights. Leqaa should be free, recovering in New Jersey with her family. Instead, her family is left to wonder whether she would be another casualty of ICE custody,” said Sarah Sherman-Stokes, supervising attorney with the Boston University School of Law Immigrants’ Rights Clinic.

“Leqaa should be at home with her family after this episode in the hospital. Instead, because ICE continues to seek to punish her for her advocacy for Palestine and Palestinians, including her own family, she was sent back to deplorable conditions, where no one could expect to recuperate meaningfully,” said Naz Ahmad, co-director of CLEAR.

“ICE disappeared Leqaa into a hospital without any access to her legal counsel and family, subjecting her loved ones to unbearable pain. This lack of transparency is straight from ICE’s playbook: isolate, conceal, and punish whomever it disfavors. Leqaa remains confined for speaking out against the genocide in Gaza and its toll on her family. We continue to demand her immediate freedom and the freedom of everyone hidden behind the bars of the debilitating and deadly immigration system,” said Sadaf Hasan, staff attorney at Muslim Advocates.

#DallasTX #TX #ImmigrantRights #ICE

div id="sharingbuttons.io"/div]]>

Chicago protest demands action from States Attorney Burke one month after the murder of Renee Good by ICE

<![CDATA[Chicago protest on the one month anniversary of the ICE murder of Renee Good.

Chicago, IL— Hundreds of protesters gathered in downtown Chicago’s freezing wind on Saturday, February 7 to honor one month since the murder of Renee Good at the hands of ICE and to demand justice for those killed by ICE. The protest was called by the Coalition Against the Trump Agenda in response to a national call for action from the Legalization for All Network.

!--more--

In Chicago, the demand for justice and accountability is targeted at Cook County State’s Attorney Eileen Burke, who has consistently stood on the side of corrupt and violent police officers and against the people’s movements.

A week ago, prompted by the growing public demand for ICE accountability, Mayor Brandon Johnson signed an executive order directing the Chicago Police Department (CPD) to watch for illegal activity by ICE agents and report felony charges to the State’s Attorney at the mayor’s direction. Burke opposed the order in an internal memo to her staff, calling it "inappropriate," and claiming it would interfere with her office’s ability to prosecute federal agents.

Nick Sous, an organizer with the Arab American Action Network (AAAN), called out Burke’s hypocrisy in his remarks at the protest, “The only thing in the way of Eileen Burke prosecuting killer cops or ICE agents is Eileen Burke.”

In her first week in office in December 2024, Burke dropped the charges against Oak Lawn Police officer Patrick O’Donnell, who had helped beat Arab youth Hadi Abuatelah within inches of his life, along with two other officers in 2022.

Johnnie Showers, a member of the Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression and wife of wrongful conviction survivor Devon Showers, also spoke at the protest. Showers has seen the corruption of CPD and the state’s attorney’s office firsthand in her struggle to free her husband and called for solidarity in the fight to hold both ICE and CPD accountable.

Showers said that ICE and CPD are “working together against us, the working class, the ones that pay their bills,” Showers said. “They are kidnapping us and killing us in the jails. So we need to stand in solidarity and make sure we stop them. We need to fight back.”

Marien Casillas Pebellón, executive director of the West Suburban Action Project (PASO), addressed the crowd and raised the collective demand for accountability for the continued violence on the part of ICE agents and the entire Trump administration against our communities.

“We want ICE out of everywhere,” Pebellón said. “We want those in charge prosecuted. They accuse us of being criminals. The criminals are in the White House right now”

Angel Naranjos, a leader in the Freedom Road Socialist Organization, closed the rally with spirited remarks, “If the past few weeks have taught us anything, it’s that things must change and they must change fast.”

Naranjos continued, “Donald Trump and his corporate media love to say that we are domestic terrorists when we confront ICE—that we should protest peacefully. But we say it is right to rebel.”

After the program, the protesters took to the streets and marched north to Trump Tower, chanting a message for Trump and all his criminal ICE agents, “Lock them up!
