Detroit, MI – Defense attorneys for Rasmea Odeh, the Palestinian American icon who was wrongfully convicted in a politically-motivated, federal immigration case, filed a motion yesterday in response to last week’s ruling by Judge Gershwin Drain that Rasmea would have to submit to up to 18 hours of a government expert’s examination of her mental state.

Detroit, MI – Rasmea Odeh, a survivor of vicious torture at the hands of the Israeli military, will be compelled to undergo hours of psychological evaluation by a government forensic examiner, according to a ruling by federal Judge Gershwin Drain. Drain cancelled a Sept. 22 hearing on the matter in Detroit, where supporters from across the Midwest had planned to join Odeh.

Detroit, MI – Over 100 supporters of Rasmea Odeh chanted her name in excitement as she emerged from the Federal Court Building in downtown Detroit on June 13. The crowd could see on Odeh’s face that she had good news. Slightly embarrassed by all the attention,she eventually waved for supporters to cross the street and join her for a press conference.

Rasmea Odeh's sentencing hearing March 12 in Detroit

Detroit, MI — Palestinian American women’s leader Rasmea Odeh was welcomed with cheers as she walked out of court on March 12 into the arms of 200 supporters. The crowd chanted “Rasmea! Rasmea! Rasmea!”

Detroit, MI – Chicago’s 68-year-old Palestinian community leader, Rasmea Odeh, is set to appear in a Detroit federal court for sentencing on March 12, following her conviction on a single charge of Unlawful Procurement of Naturalization. On Feb. 13 Federal District Judge Gershwin Drain issued an order denying two motions by Odeh’s defense team. One motion called for a new trial because of a number of legal errors in the court’s rulings in her November trial. Another called for the judge to set aside the jury’s decision altogether.

Detroit, MI – Prosecutor Jonathan Tukel of the U.S. Attorney’s Office is asking that the bond for Palestinian American leader Rasmea Odeh be revoked. This comes on the heels of an unjust guilty verdict in her case. Judge Drain will decide the issue in a hearing at 2:00 p.m. today, Nov. 10.

In court today, Nov. 5, the government presented its case against Rasmea Odeh. As expected, it is based on Israeli military court proceedings against her from 1969 to 1970. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jonathan Tukel held up the Israeli conviction, which was achieved only after Rasmea was violently tortured for 25 days.
