Reformers banded together and formed the 743 New Leadership Team/El Nuevo Liderazgo. The vote is over. It appears that the election was stolen, marking a loss for the for 743 New Leadership Team as well as rank-and-file workers.

With four slates running, the Movement Towards Members slate headed by Donnie Von Moore was declared the winner by an election officer that they hired, Steven M Bierig. Bierig declared that Von Moore received 26.9% of those voting, 574 votes. The 743 New Leadership Team came in a virtual tie with another slate for second place with roughly 530 votes each. Only 2040 out of 10,020 workers participated in the election.

Larry Davis, who orchestrated the sham charges against Richard Berg and Eugenia Alvarez, came in dead last. Exposed to the workers of Local 743 and betrayed by those who used him, Davis leaves office in disgrace. In full view of the membership, most union representatives barely did their jobs during the election and campaigned full time for their candidate, Donnie Von Moore.

Thousands of members, mostly Latino, did not receive ballots at their homes or when they did vote they were challenged by the union. It was widely thought that the overwhelming majority of the Latino vote would go to New Leadership Team /Nuevo Liderazgo. In fact, they were the only slate that seriously campaigned in shops dominated by Latino members. James Cook, a steward from University of Chicago Medical Center said, “Clearly Latinos have been denied their votes.”

In 2001 and 2004 Fight Back! reported about stolen elections in Local 743. In 2007 we reported on the victory of reformers in a U.S. Department of Labor-run election. With the Department of Labor gone, it appears the election was stolen by using some old tricks as well as refusing to process address changes for Latinos and others 743 New Leadership Team supporters.

Von Moore has long been on the shady side of 743 affairs. Just months ago he presided over a giveaway of the defined benefit pension for close to 1000 workers at Rush University Medical Center. Nursing home administrators supported Von Moore, knowing he would take them back to the ‘good ol’ days’ of undercutting contracts of other SEIU unionized nursing homes in the area.

New Leadership Team presidential candidate J Burger said, “Making the Von Moore leadership accountable to the members won’t be easy, but must be done to prevent the return of back room deals, higher officer salaries and poor member representation. Only an active and informed membership can make this happen.”

A source inside the 743 New Leadership Team told Fight Back! that a post-election protest has been filed. Many workers who supported the New Leadership Team/El Nuevo Liderazgo will continue their efforts to build a fighting workers movement. This includes support for Sandy Pope as she takes on James Hoffa for Teamster International President.

The five fired are Field Service Director Bill Silver, Lead Negotiator Catherine Schutzius, Business Agents J. Burger (University of Chicago Medical Center) and Joe Sexauer (University of Chicago) and Lead Organizer Makia Burns.

Were they fired because they weren’t working hard for the members of the union, or because their work performance was inferior? Not according to a flier released by the 743 New Leadership Team.

Fired reps Schutzius and Silver were in the middle of bargaining 20 contracts, including a major contract at the University of Chicago. Sexauer was coordinating a major contract campaign on the campus.

At UC Medical Center, Burger was working to resolve more than 50 outstanding grievances.

Members less important than upcoming union elections

Davis himself didn’t claim the staff were being fired for their failures, or for betraying the promises that they were elected on. In fact, when he fired them, Davis told each they had done a good job, but they were just not “part of his new team.”

In other words, the members of the union are taking a back seat to Davis’ takeover of the local – and its bank account.

Davis was elected as Vice President in Local 743 in 2007 with a platform to end corruption and collaboration with bosses. Once he got into office, he realized that President Richard Berg intended to make good on those promises. Berg cut salaries and insisted on holding union reps accountable. Larry Davis complained about his $85,000 a year salary being much too small. He complained about the amount of work he was expected to do. Then he collaborated with Hoffa and similar old guard officers in Chicago’s Joint Council to remove Berg and Secretary Treasurer Gina Alvarez from office on trumped up charges and put the entire reform program on hold.

Local 743 members kept in the dark about firings

Davis has made his point loud and clear: political loyalty to him is more important than loyalty to the membership.

In fact, just days after becoming president, Davis went on vacation instead of reaching out to inform Local 743 members about what was happening.

Under the corrupt administration of Walston and Lopez, members have seen what it means to play politics with our dues money. Before Davis’ treachery, the local was starting to turn things around.

The New Leadership Team’s statement called on members to send a message to Davis that they won’t go back to the way things used to be done. A petition is being circulated that states that members should be put before politics. Members are urged to attend the union meeting on June 7 and make their voices heard.

Davis got rid of the staff in order to best prepare the ground for himself being elected in local officer elections this fall. According to the leaflet, the 743 New Leadership Team will be running a slate of reform candidates.

Fight Back!: Why has Jimmy Hoffa Jr. removed you from office?

Richard Berg: Hoffa has consistently supported corrupt union officials as long as they supported him. We have been fighting against corruption in Local 743 since 1988, for 22 years. The past two Teamster Local 743 presidents are in jail. They stole a Teamster officers’ election from the working members of our union, from our 743 New Leadership Slate, and from myself in 2004. Hoffa did nothing to investigate this theft. When we gave him the evidence he looked the other way. Finally, the U.S. Department of Labor had to step in to prosecute these criminals.

Also, I ran against Hoffa and his slate in 2006. I ran for International Vice President of the Central Region on the Tom Leedham Slate. I received over 40% of the vote. Hoffa's popularity has slipped dramatically, so he wants to eliminate his rivals as a way to keep his job as International Teamster President.

Fight Back!: What were the charges against you and Secretary Treasurer Gina Alvarez?

Richard Berg: There were 10 charges filed against me, and 6 charges filed against Secretary Treasurer Alvarez. All except one was dismissed. I think that they had to dismiss them because they were so obviously biased, charges based on politics, instead of on merit.

The one remaining charge is technical and minor. It stems from a settlement to avoid a lawsuit with a do nothing union representative that worked for local 743. Even though he didn't deserve a penny we paid him $21 thousand. While this is too much, I made the decision in order to save even more money in legal fees. Everyone on the local 743 executive board was notified and no one raised any objections even though they had the right to do so at that time.

Secretary Treasurer Alvarez's involvement was the same as those that filed the charges against us. She simply signed the check along with me. All the charging parties later approved this at the next Local 743 executive board meeting.

The bottom line is that we did nothing wrong. Nothing! This is simply a power grab by those who oppose workers building a fighting labor movement.

Fight Back!: Did either of you benefit personally?

Richard Berg: No, in fact I have cut my salary by $70 thousand a year and cut my benefits by well over 50%. I believe that union officials should live like the workers they represent, not like kings and queens.

Some union leaders resent Secretary Treasurer Alvarez's efforts to eliminate the perks of officers and staff. She looks after Local 743 Members dues money carefully.

Fight Back!: The members of the executive board that brought the charges against you included several that ran with you in 2007. What happened? Why did they turn against you?

Richard Berg: This is a great disappointment. When we ran for office we told the members we would cut the salaries of officers, work hard and put the resources of the union to work for the members. Larry Davis, Chantell Harlin and Fernando Garcia thought that this was just campaign talk. After we won they demanded the same big salaries the old guard officials had. They wanted to hire their friends and pay them big money.

When Secretary Treasurer Alvarez and I resisted this, the conflict started. Eventually they worked with the Hoffa camp to enrich themselves by turning their backs on the reforms that we had put in place.

Fight Back!: The New Leadership Slate in office picked a number of fights with employers in Chicago and northern Indiana, most notably SK Hand Tools in Chicago, where workers struck for over 2 months to defend their right to health care, among other demands. Will the officers that brought charges against you continue this fighting attitude toward the bosses?

Richard Berg: This may by the biggest difference between us and them. We communicate with the workers. We organize and mobilize local 743 members to fight for dignity and respect on the job, to fight for a better life for themselves and their families.

Those who threw us out are satisfied with local 743 being a company union, a union that collaborates with management. The truth is that they just want the workers dues money for themselves.

Fight Back!: What does this mean for you and Gina Alvarez? Will you be allowed to run for office in the next local elections this year?

Richard Berg: This week Gina and I will file a lawsuit asking the judge to reverse the Hoffa Executive Board's ruling. We believe that the workers should decide who runs their local union, not Hoffa and his cronies.

If we are not successful, the 743 New Leadership Team will run a slate without us. It is not about Gina and I, it is about the workers having a union that will fight in their interests. We will support the 743 New Leadership Team whether we are candidates on it or not.

Fight Back!: Can this attack be stopped?

Richard Berg: The workers have the power to stop this power grab. Despite some officials’ lust for power and money, unions are the organizations of workers. The real working class leadership in this union must step forward and fight to take this union.

Chicago, IL – Two days after Teamsters Joint Council 25 suspended Richard Berg and Gina Alvarez from office over trumped up charges, the International president, Jimmy Hoffa, Jr. has granted them a stay of effectiveness. This will be in place until the international hears their appeal. Berg and Alvarez will be restored to their positions in the union immediately.

The two reform leaders of Local 743 were charged with corruption. Ironically, neither of them was accused of personally benefiting in any of the charges brought against them. In fact, Secretary Treasurer Alvarez and President Berg had worked to put the local union back into the hands of the members after decades of true corruption. The officers of the local for years before Berg and Alvarez had stolen elections and forced sell-out contracts onto members. These practices were accepted by the Joint Council.

In recent months, Berg and Alvarez helped lead the workers at SK Hand Tools to a victorious strike to defend health care benefits. That strike gained national attention, including coverage in the New York Times and Wall Street Journal. The leader of the executive board in the local that charged them is Larry Davis, who played no role in the SK strike.

President Berg expressed to Fight Back! the gratitude he and Secretary Treasurer Alvarez felt for the outpouring of support they received from friends, allies and workers in the local since the news of their removal from office broke on Monday evening.

Chicago, IL – Chicago Teamster bosses ousted reformers Richard Berg and Gina Alvarez from union office today in a power struggle between grassroots reformers and old guard Teamster officials over one of the largest Teamster local unions in Chicago and the country.

Joint Council 25 officials suspended Richard Berg from union membership and removed him as president of Teamsters Local 743 on false charges that he violated Teamster procedures. Alvarez was also suspended from membership and removed as secretary-treasurer.

The 11,000 members of Local 743 voted Berg and his New Leadership Slate into office in 2007 on a reform platform. His election was bitterly opposed – for years – by Chicago’s top Teamster officials, who used every means at their disposal to prevent a reform victory in Local 743.

Berg opponents were convicted of stealing a union vote to block his election. One of the vote-riggers is also serving jail time for using Local 743 as a front for drug trafficking. When Berg was nominated in June 2006 for International Vice President on the reform slate, while Chicago's top Teamster official John Coli ran on the old guard slate, Berg was assaulted at the Teamster Convention by former Local 743 president Richard Lopez. Joint Council 25 and International Union officials upheld the Local 743 election results that were stolen and overturned – but today voted to suspend Berg and Alvarez’s union membership – a move that could disqualify them from running for re-election in Local 743.

Local 743 members plan to fight Berg and Alvarez’s removal in federal court, where they were able to win a supervised election.

“They couldn’t steal our election and they couldn’t defeat us at the polls, so they used trumped up charges to oust Richard and Gina and hijack Local 743,” said Joe Sexauer, Local 743 union representative who helped organize Berg’s successful election. “But the union is about more than any one leader – it’s about the members. We’ve defeated corrupt officials before, and we’ll do it again.”

Berg and his New Leadership Slate were elected to lead Local 743 in October 2007 in an election supervised by the Department of Labor – and Berg followed through on his reform platform. He cut his salary by $70,000 and shaved the union payroll by eliminating do-nothing jobs.

Not everyone was happy with Local 743’s new direction, including some of the newly-elected officers. They agreed to run with Berg on a reform platform that included reducing the salaries of overpaid union officials. But they demanded higher salaries once they were in office. When members complained that some union representatives weren’t doing their job, Berg investigated the complaints, took the cases to the union’s Executive Board, and those union representatives were terminated.

Unhappy at the financial reforms and the demands for accountability of union staff some Local 743 officers teamed up with Berg’s opponents in the Teamster hierarchy. They filed internal union charges falsely claiming that Berg had failed to present the terminations and other union matters to the Executive Board. Not a single one of the charges alleges that Berg or any other Local 743 reformer took a penny for personal gain.

Local 743 represents 11,000 members at the University of Chicago and U of C Hospital, Rush Presbyterian Hospital, Blue Cross and numerous shops, factories, offices and nursing homes.

“We elected him, and it's our choice, the membership to keep him or take him out in an election, not like this,” said UC Medical Center worker Jean Moore.

Under Berg’s leadership, Local 743 cut officer salaries, including his own, and put the union’s dues money to work for the membership. Berg hired professional contract negotiators and led a successful strike to protect members’ healthcare. The local has taken stands to promote civil rights and racial equality: Local 743 sponsored Martin Luther King Day events and participated in marches for immigrants rights.

“For years officials treated Local 743 like a piggy-bank,” said Melanie Cloghessy, a member of Local 743 at the University of Chicago. “We won’t go back to those dark days of corruption. The New Leadership team will keep fighting for a union that fights for us. The officials who are making this power grab are going to learn that we’ll fight back against their double-dealing just like we stood up to the criminal activities of the past.”

Stephanie Weiner of the Network to Fight for Economic Justice presented $1,500 to SK Hand Tool striker John McHale. The money was raised October 3, at the 'We Say Fight Back' conference in Chicago, where trade union, community, immigrant rights, and student activists came together to found the Network to Fight for Economic Justice. SK Hand and Tool strikers were prominent in the conference and attendees vowed to build support for the strike.

On August 25, workers struck SK Hand Tools because the company owner stopped paying their health insurance premiums as required by their contract.

Chicago, IL – When the owner of SK Hand Tools in Chicago unilaterally cut off health care benefits for his employees, he provoked a strike. As a result, the picket line of striking workers on Tuesday, Aug. 25, was also a health care rally.

50 Teamsters hit the sidewalk in front of the plant at 6:00 a.m., as passing truckers blasted air horns in support. With arthritis in both knees, Sam Pope was having a hard time marching. “The concrete really hurts, but I’ll do my part,” he winced. For 15 years he had set up mills to make the inner bodies of the sockets for Craftsmen and SK brand tools. “All the union people are out,” he said, turning to join the line, which was true, as the members of Teamsters Local 743 had voted unanimously to strike.

The chant that rose up loudest and longest was, “What do we want? Health care! When do we want it? Now!” Most in the U.S. who have health insurance get it from their employers, and for Sam with his chronic condition, there was no question that he’d fight to get it back.

The company is demanding major wage concessions on top of stopping health care coverage without notice.

David Biedrzycki, a union steward at the plant and employed as a welder/grinder/polisher for 25 years, only earned $8,000 this past year. He has not worked in six months and noted the irony that Claude Fuger, the wealthy French owner, returned to France recently for treatment when he became ill. France has national health care. “Claude makes $280,000 a year. He wants us to pay for health insurance, but says he can’t afford it himself.”

Biedrzycki said “We’re not going in until Claude comes back with a fair offer.”

Chicago, IL – University of Chicago Hospital workers have come out strong to demand a fair contract from their wealthy employer. Over three days near the end of July, the 1400 members of Teamsters Local 743 voted down a contract offer from management. The resounding “No” vote – 93.5% against – was because the company’s offer didn’t address employees concerns about job security, healthcare costs and compensation.

The hospital reported a substantial increase in operating income and net assets in 2008. Despite this, they cut hundreds of jobs earlier this year, adding to job security fears that already existed because of contracting-out.

According to union representative J Burger, bargaining for these workers – the largest union contract at the hospital – was progressing until early July. The elected committee was shocked when the employer brought their ‘final offer’ to the table.

Kendra Mitchell, a Nursing Supportive Assistant, explained her issue with contracting-out. “Agency nursing assistants are used instead of NSAs. But they can’t do glucose scans, for example, meaning we have extra work to do.”

Richard Berg, president of Local 743 and former environmental services worker at the hospital for 17 years, explained what is behind this conflict: “The UC Medical Center is doing fine, but they’re using the excuse of the crisis in the economy to squeeze the members of Local 743. Dean [James] Madera has a seven figure salary. Our members just want a contract that is mutually beneficial.”

Members of Local 743’s bargaining committee and the representatives were joined at a press conference in front of the hospital on Aug. 3 by members of SEIU (Service Employees International Union) Local 73, the trades people at the University of Chicago.

Las falsas acusaciones a Berg son un atentado para derrotar este esfuerzo de los trabajadores.

El esfuerzo para cambiar el reglamento tenia el propósito de dar fuerza a los reclamos de los miembros de la base del Local 743. Los cambios requerían que los líderes vendidos del sindicato lucharan por los trabajadores y pararan de hacer negociaciones a espaldas de los trabajadores. Estos cambios requerían que el Local sindical informara a los miembros de sus derechos y más importante que se llamara a una elección limpia y transparente.

Watson como presidente del Local 743 no puede permitir que los trabajadores dirijan su sindicato y tengan voz y voto en sus asuntos. Es por esto, que Watson gasto miles de dólares del sindicato para derrotar estas propuestas. Como consecuencia de estas maniobras ilegales, Watson ha permitido que Richard Berg sea acusado con cargos totalmente falsos.

Chicago, IL – On Friday morning, July 31, 30 workers walked the picket line at S-K Hand Tools on Chicago’s southwest side. The picket included several retirees and laid-off workers. The four hour strike by Teamsters Local 743 was provoked by unresolved grievances. Norma Trinidad, a 23-year employee stated, “Everyone is here, current workers, people laid off, people who retired years ago – we are all here fighting for respect!”

Emilio Luna, 12-year employee, stated, “We are united and we are not going to settle for anything else less than the respect we deserve. We want to send a strong message to the company that we will not accept abuse.”

The strikers turned away one Teamster-driven truck delivering oil to the company. Another driver stated he would make his delivery after the strike was over.

Las Vegas, NV – El presidente del sindicato de Camioneros (Teamsters) logró su meta-ell aumento mas grande en la cuota sindical en la historia de este sindicato. El voto a favor del aumento en la convención de finanzas el 30 de Abril fue aplastante.

¿Como fue posible? ¿Que clase de Teamster votaría a favor de un aumento tan grande? Especialmente cuando se toma en cuenta el nivel de corrupción y desgaste presupuestuarial de parte de los burócratas de los Teamsters, ¿Como pudo haber pasado esto?

Las respuestas son sencillas. Hoffa no permitió ningun voto de parte de la membracía general sobre los aumentos.

En lugar de eso, organizó una convención de puros rutinarios del sindicato. La abrumadora mayoría de los delegados de esta convención son funcionarios que reciben mucho mas del sindicato en salarios y recursos que pagan en cuotas. Estos parásitas se regalaron dinero y obligan a los miembros de base a que paguen el costo.

A pesar de los mejores esfuerzos por parte de Hoffa de callar a la voz de la base en el sindicato, una oposición valiente se expresó en contra de los aumentos. En algunos locales alrededor del país, se llevaron a cabo votos chuecos, fingiendo un impacto. A la convención delegado reformista Richard Berg del local 743 hizo un llamado para un voto auténtico. “Nosotros creemos que los miembros del sindicato deben tener el derecho de un voto sobre este asunto. No nos gusta el hecho de que los lideres del sindicato vayan sigilosamente a Las Vegas despues de una elección para aprobar estos aumentos” dijo.

Hoffa hizo todo lo posible para mantener secretos estos actos malos. En contraste con las convenciones del pasado, prohibió la presencia de la prensa, de invitados y hasta de la membracía sindical en el salón de la convención. No se permitieron ni observadores ni cámeras.

Pronto, Teamsters en todo el país se darán cuenta que Hoffa les está quitando un pedazo aun mayor de sus cheques de salario. En lugar de usar los fondos del sindicato para luchar para mejores condiciones para los trabajadores, Hoffa lo pretende usar para dar fondos a candidatos republicanos anti-obreros o a demócratas incumplidos.

¿Porque? Hoffa quiere que su amigo George Bush le quita la supervisión gubernmental de encima de los Teamsters. Esta supervisión ha sido bornochoso y costoso. Ultimamente el compañero de formula de Hoffa, Bill Hogan, y ayudante Dana Passo, ambos chicagoenses, fueron agarrados en el proceso de hacer un acuerdo sucio, anti-trabajador, con la industria de convenciones de Las Vegas. El pacto fue para que la industria pudiera sustituir a cientos de trabajadores sindicalizados con trabajadores no-sindicalizados, enriqueciendo a Hogan y Passo en el proceso.

Y a propósito, ¿quien es el dueño de la empresa no-sindicalizado que iba a proporcionar a los obreros substitutos? Pues, nada menos que el propio hermano de Hogan.

Mientras que Hoffa sigue cuidado sus intereses creados y los de sus amigotes, miembros de los Teamsters no podemos quedar con los brazos cruzados esperando que las cosas se mejoren por si solas. Pronto se vence el contrato del sindicato con United Parcel Service. UPS quiere un acuerdo rápido. El año que entra, se vence el cntrato maestro de los camioneros de cargo (Truck Drivers Master Freight Contract).

Estos son verdaderos asuntos que impactan a gente de carne y hueso. La suerte de nuestros contratos y de nuestro sindicato tendrá repercusiones en el movimiento laboral mucho mas allá de los Teamsters. La battala de las bases del sinicato para crear un sindicato para todos los Teamsters de clase trabajadora, tendrá un impacto con todos los trabajadores.

Chicago IL – Intentaron robar la elección del local 743 del Sindicato de Camioneros (Teamsters) pero los agarraron con las manos en la masa. Bob Walston, Diane Strickland y los demas oficiales del 743 no pudieron ganar una elecciòn por si solos, de modo que recurrieron a la fraude. La elección fue entre la planilla de base de “Liderato Nuevo” contra los elementos corrutos de la vieja guardia.

“Los ladrones roban, esto es un hecho de la vida” dijo Richard Berg, candidato reformistsa en la Planilla Liderato Nuevo, “pero los trabajadores miembros del local 743 no pueden y no deben permitir que estos rateros nos roben nuestro sindicato. No pertenece a los caciques, a la mafia, sino a los trabajadores. No vamos a permitir que la justica, la democracia y nuestra dignidad nos sean robados. Vamos a pelear esto hasta al fin”.

Jimmy Hoffa, hijo, actual presidente internacional de los “Teamsers”, respaldó a la planilla de Walston, y es conocido como un vendido.

¡Un Robo!

El robo de la elección no se hizo en una forma especialmente inteligente. Contrataron a su propio tipo, James Dehann, para manejar a la elección. Pero Dehann no alquiló una caja postal para las balotas de la elección; permitió que Diane Strickland, parte de la planilla de Hoffa, lo hiciera. Esto le dio a ella accesso 24 horas al día a las balotas de la membrasía.

Cuando los miembros de la planilla Liderato Nuevo tomaron a Dehann y a la planilla de Hoffa presentandose en masa para observar cada paso de la elección, no pudieron ocultar al robo. “Encontramos que mas de 300 balotas que se regresaron habían desaparecido bajo su custodia. Cientos de balotas extras aparecieron de quien sabe done” dijo Berg.

En el día en que se contó el voto, Dehann se vio oblicado a recurrir a medidas extraordinarias para evidtar que la Planilla Liderato Nuevo tomara control. Un ejemplo: No permitió que nadie menos el mismo retara a los votantes cuestionables. El oficial de elecciones nobrado por Walston, en plena violación de la constitución del sindicato, eliminó el derecho de cuestionar a las credenciales de las balotas. Cuando Richard Berg señaló lo mal hecho, Dehann le amenazó con arresto y explusión de la propiedad del sindicato.

Este robo es solo uno de una serie de robos cometidos por los actuales oficiales. Esta misma gente causó la quiebra de la unión de crédito del local 743, dando muchos préstamos cuestionables a sus amigotes. Bajo su custodio mas de $16 millones desaparecieron del Fondo de Salud y Bienestar dejandolo en la quiebra tambien.

“Todo mundo ya sabe sus movidas, no pueden ya ganar una elección limppia” dijo Edwin Soto de la Planilla de Liderato Nuevo. “Por eso tienen que recurrir a estas medidas”.

Sigue la Lucha

La planilla Liderato Nuevo ha decidido seguir luchando en contra de este último robo por parte de los Hoffaistas, hasta al fin. La planilla Liderato Nuevo ha levantado cargos con el Consejo Conjunto de los Teamsters tamien está haciendo preparativas para ir al Departamento de Trabajo y a las cortes. “Sabemos que ganamos a esta elección” dijo Debra Simmons, candidata para Tesorera de la Planilla Liderato Nuevo, “no vamos a paraar hasta que se remuevan a estos elementos corruptos del local 743”

La verdadera controversia es de la representación. En todos los 175 y mas lugares donde trabajan miembros del local 743, un contrato estipula todo desde los salarioos a reglas de trabajos y procederes para reclamar una queja, y mucho mas. “Estas personas no han negociado un contrato decente desde ser nombrados” dijo Richard Berg. “Los miembros del local 743 sabemos que están acostados con la gerencia, y estamos hartos. No vamos a descansarnos hasta que se vayan”.

Durante la campaña, la planilla Liderato Nuevo pressntó un plan para acabar con la corrupción en el local 743, hacer que los oficiales locales rindan cuentas a la membrasía, y empezar a gastar las cuotas de los miembros en ellos y no en enriquecer a unos cuantos funcionarios hoffaistas.

Chicago, IL – William Jenkins, un miembro de la planilla de Liderato Nuevo del local 743, y un profesional de videos con fama nacional, falleció de un ataque cardiaco el 30 de Octubre.

Richard Berg, candidato para presidencia estatal de Liderato Nuevo, dijo “su muerte es un gran golpe al movimiento obrero”.

Un profesional de producción de videos nacionalmente conocido, era presidente del Comité para Aceso Laboral, una organización no lucrativa basada en Chicago que produce el progama televisado en cable “Labor Beat” y “Labor Express” en la radio.

Jenkins, como se conocía y estimaba, era un hombre tranquilo, modesto, y decente. Padre de familia, amigo, activista, videógrafo, compañero y apoyador del movimiento pro- paz y justicia, hizo todo lo que pudo para avanzar al movimiento obrero. Trabajaba el tercer torno en el Hospital Rush-Presbyterian St Lukes, donde hizo mucho trabajo repartiendo el periódico Fight Back!

Chicago IL – Los funcionarios del local 743 del sindicato de Camioneros (Teamsters) en Chicago jamas luchan en contra de los patrones. No organizan huelgas, y dicen a los miembros que una huelga es una cosa mala. El resultado es contratos pobres, aumentos cada vez menores, personas que no son miembros del sindicato haciendo trabajos de los miembros, y la desaparencia de beneficios que en un tiempo eran decentes. Los 14,000 miembros del local 743, que son trabajadores de industria, oficinistas, de bodegas y de cuidado de salud, ya están hartos.

La Planilla Liderato Nuevo ha postulado candidatos para el local 743 en las elecciones que nos acercan. Es una planilla de la base que compromete a que se acabe la corrupción de la “vieja guardia”, a que se contraten mas representantes del sindicato, a que se movilicen a los miembros y que se bajen a los enormes salarios y privilegios de los funcionarios del sindicato. La Planilla Liderato Nuevo incluye empleados de los hospitales de la Universidad de Chicago que están cansados de falsificación del voto en la ratificación del contrato, y tambien empleados que perdieron sus beneficios de salud porque el Presidente internacional Hoffa, Bob Walston y Richard Lopez manejaron mal a los fondos.

“Estamos negociando un contrato en Rush-St. Lukes ahorita. El representante sindical Hoffaista Reggie Ford no presente ningun liderato en estas negociaciones. Si no fuera por la movilización de la membracía por parte de la Planilla de Liderato Nuevo, Ford hubiera regalado todo [a la gerencia]” dijo Debbie Simmons, cadnidata para secretario/tesorero en la planilla Nuevo Liderato.

En vez de protejer a los luchadores de la membracía del siindicato la gente de Hoffa colaboran con la gerencia para que los despidan.

“Este verano se vendió a nuestra compañía, y los dueños nuevos despidieron a trabajadores con mas de 10 años de experiencia” dijo Edwin Soto, un empleado en Flextek, que fue despedido tambien. “Despedieron a los que nosotros que nos opusimos a los patrones cuando violaron a nuestro contrato. Cuando presionabamos al sindicato para recuperar a nuestros trabajos, el presidente del local 743, Bob Watson, amenazó a los trabajadores en vez de luchar por nuestros intereses”. Soto está postulado para síndico en la planilla de Liderato Nuevo.

Richard Berg, candidato para presidencia del local en la Planilla Liderato Nuevo, dijo “los trabajadores miembros de este sindicato hemos unido en contra de la corrupción, y estamos listos a pelear con los patrones por medio de regresar el control del sindicato a sus miembros. Nuestros miembros exigen dignidad y respeto y no vamos a descansarnos hasta sacar a estos rateros y estúpidos del sindicato”.

En locales del sindicato de Camioneros en todo Chicago, es notable el número de contratos débiles. “Hay bastantes trabajadores latinos maltratados” dijo Mercy Soto, que trabaja torno de noche descargando camiones en UPS en local 705. “He hecho campaña en lugares de trabajo pertenecientes al local 743 donde los contratos establecen dos 'capas' de trabajadores” con diferentes salarios. “A los trabajadores latinos los contratan a un salario debajo de lo que dice el contrato. Si los trabajadores se quejan, se quedan despedidos y el sindicato no lucha a su favor” dice Soto.

“La gente está cansada de que los patrones los amenazan y luego los funcionarios del sindicato les dicen que a menos que se queden callados, se les van a echar la Migra encima” agregó.

La planilla de Liderato Nuevo se considera parte del nuevo movimiento obrero en este país. En la convención de los Camioneros (Teamsters) en 2001, los candidatos de la planilla Liderato Nuevo retaron a la vieja guardia hoffaista. “Luchabamos a favor de mas pagos de huelga para los trabajadores, menos salarios y privilegios para los funcionarios del sindicato, y en contra del racismo” dijo Tony Caldera, candidato de Liderato Nuevo para vicepresidente.

En la Convención, se nominóf a Tom Needham para presidente nacional del sindicato en la planilla Nacional de “Rank and File Power” (Poder a la Base). Los apoyadores de Hoffa intentaron callar a los reformistas, pero fracasaron. “Rank and File Power” luchó en contra de Hoffa por sus vinculaciones con el presidente George Bush. Tambien fueron los reformistas que obligaron al sindicato a que se expresara en contra del bombardeo de Vieques por la marina de guerra norteamericana.

Hoffa desde entonces ha mantenido su gran amor por Bush, apoyando el plan de sacar petroleo de la preserva nacional del Arctico en Alaska.

Todo el sindicato de Camioneros “Teamsters” se encuentra en movimiento. Como se vienen acercando las elecciones nacionales, estas cuestiones de vida o muerte han impulsado que muchos miembros reflejen sobre sobre la necesidad de cambios desde arriba y para abajo. William Jenkis, un trabajador en el hospital Rush-St Lukes, dijo “La planilla Liderato Nuevo se base en la clase trabajadora. Por eso es que apoyamos a Tom Leedham. Por eso es que nos comprometimos a transformar al movimiento obrero, no solo en el local 743, sino en todo el país”.

Christine Royster, de la Planilla Liderato Nuevo del local 743, fue nominada para vicepresidente nacional en la planilla de Tom Leedham de “Rank and File Power”. Si sale electa será la primera afroamerican en la junta ejecutiva de los “Teamsters'.

“Es un honor que me postularon para este puesto” dijo Royster. “A demasiados afroamericanos y latinos nos ignoran y nos tratan como miembros de clase segunda en el sindicato de Teamsters. La planilla de Tom Leedham “Rank and File Power” va a cambiar a todo eso”.

Para los miembros del Local 743 de los Teamsters en Chicago, tener oficiales vendidos es muy común. Los votos amanados en los contratos, votos amanados para elegir delegados en las fábricas, negociaciones a espaldas de los trabajadores con los patrones, éstas y otra variedad de quejas son actualmente el estado normal en nuestra Unión.

Pero esta vez si se pasaron cuando nos informaron que el dinero se había terminado 16 millones de Dólares, muchos trabajadores sospechan que es un robo. Ese dinero era para cubrir el Plan de Salud de los miembros y su familia del Local 743.

El Fondo de Salud y Bienestar del Local 743 era el Seguro de Salud para miles de Teamsters que trabajan en docenas de lugares de trabajo, como quiera que sea incompetencia o robo el dinero se acabó.

La cobertura del Plan de Salud ha sido drasticamente reducido o eliminado con muy poca o nada de información. Algunos trabajadores no pueden comprar sus medicinas, otros trabajadores se vieron obligados a suspender su tratamiento dental antes de que se completara. Esposas embarazadas están preocupadas por no saber como le van hacer para pagar su parto.

Están estos trabajadores molestos? ¡Claro que si! Cientos de miembros del 743, se presentaron temprano a la reunión regular de junio. Ellos hicieron una línea de piquete aclamando y exigiendo por la renuncia del Comité Ejecutivo del Local 743. Los escritos en los cartones y las consignas se escucharon en Español, Ingles y Polaco, mostrando la unidad en la menbresía que es muy diversa.

¿Por qué usted no respeta el contrato que negoció? Demandaba el delegado sindical Edwin Soto de la compañía Flextek, trabajadores de Bagcraft, preguntaban al Secretario Tesorero Robert Walston, porque permitió que el fondo se fuera a bancarrota? Uno tras otro, los trabajadores demandaban en el micrófono una respuesta de José Galván, Vicepresidente del Local 743, quién solo respondía habla con tu agente de negocios. Después de la reunión los trabajadores gritaban “queremos respuestas”.

Finalmente Robert Walston, Director del Fondo para el Bienestar y la Salud del Local 743, contó la historia de la mala administración del Fondo. Pero a él se le olvidó mencionar como sus aliados Chester Glanton y el Secretario de Acuerdos del Local 743, Richard López, habían estado a cargo del Plan de Seguro, cuando el dinero desapareció. Tampoco mencionó las negociaciones que él y otros agentes de negocios del Local 743, hicieron con los patrones lo que provocó que el Fondo quebrara.

Kathy Kleckner, oficinista de la Universidad de Chicago, tomó el micrófono después de que Waston contó su versión: -¡Hermano Waston nos acabas de contar la historia de tu propia incompetencia, yo pienso que tu y todo el Comité Ejecutivo debe de renunciar inmediatamente!– ¡Esta propuesta retumbó con el apoyo de los trabajadores y docenas mas tomaron el micrófono para exijir justicia!.

Los Oficiales de la Vieja Guardia ya no pudieron aguantar, abruptamente ellos terminaron la reunión en contra de los deseos de la mayoría presente. Ellos han mostrado falta de respeto y desdén para los trabajadores que pagan sus salarios. Los trabajadores seguían gritando y ellos se apresuraron a bajarse del estrado, después ellos apagaron las luces cuando todavía permanecían muchos trabajadores en el salón. Ellos nos faltaron al respeto de la misma manera que lo hacen los patrones, explicó Cesar Sosa.

Los trabajadores se han dado cuenta de como son ellos, ellos nos quitaron el Seguro de Salud, ellos negociaron solo centavos por aumento y se pagan incrementos a sus salarios ellos mismos.

Cesar Sosa, es parte de la oposición. El fue electo recientemente como Delegado para la Convención Internacional de los Teamsters del 2001, como parte de la planilla del Nuevo Liderazgo 743, que busca Cambiar la Unión Corrupta desde arriba hasta abajo.

Despues de la reunión General del Local 743, el Presidente Chester Glanton renunció y fue reemplazado por el Secretario Tesorero Robert Walston.

Esto no es ningún cambio dijo Richard Berg, miembro de La Planilla Nuevo Liderazgo, ellos son parte de la misma planilla de Hoffa, la planilla que nos quitó el Seguro de Salud y los Incrementos Salariales decentes y ya no podemos permitir que ellos nos quiten mas. Ya es tiempo de que Hoffa, Walston, Lopez y el resto de ellos se larguen.

Tony Caldera, trabajador de la fábrica de lámparas Frederick Cooper, también delegado electo de la planilla Nuevo Liderazgo 743, está de acuerdo con sus compañeros recalcando, es tiempo de que la “Vieja Guardia” se largue. Por eso es que la planilla Nuevo Liderazgo 743 vamos a apoyar al reformador Tom Leedham para presidente Internacional en el próximo verano y también nosotros vamos a participar con nuestra planilla localmente en contra de la Vieja Guardia.

I'm attending the mass protests of the RNC to join and support the majority of Americans who are opposed to the Republican agenda. As a veteran I experienced the costs of the ongoing occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan. I saw friends and co-workers die, commit suicide, receive debilitating injuries and suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), drug abuse, and alcoholism. The massive amount of suffering experienced by the Iraqis, soldiers and their families made me look deeper into the root causes for war. Chicago IL – En una decisión sorprendiente, integrantes del local número 743 del Sindicato de Camioneros (Teamsters) votaron a favor de una planilla de delegados de tendencia democrática de la base a la convención de su sindicato, rechazando a otra planilla dominada por funcionarios y por títeres del presidente nacional de la unión Jimmy Hoffa Jr. La convención internacional del sindicato establece las posiciones políticas del organismo y nomina los candidatos para la presidencia internacional y la Junta Ejecutiva del mismo.

Los integrantes de la tendencia democrática de base se auto-demoninaron “La Planilla de Liderato Nuevo” (New Leadership Slate) y se opusieron a unos vendidos que se llaman Planilla Restauración de Hoffa (Hoffa Take-Back Slate).

Los actuales miembros pro-Hoffa de la Junta Ejecutiva pro-Hoffa del local 743 tiene la fama de hacer pactos vendidos con los patrones, de debilitar a los contratos, pagarse a ellos mismos tremendos sueldos con las cuotas de los trabajadores, y por ser amigos carnales del Sr. Hoffa, quien no ha hecho absolutamente nada para los miembros.

Un descontento amargo ha estado creciendo durante muchos años en la base, sobretodo entre los miembros afroamericanos y latinos que constituyen la mayoría de la membracía del sindicato. Tanto la gerencia como el mismo sindicato dan la espalda a los miembros que no hablan inglés. En muchos sitios de trabajo, la única presencia del sindicato ha consistido del hecho que les quitan la cuota del cheque de salario. La necesidad de un verdadero sindicato que lucha por sus miembros fue la base de la victoria de la planilla “Liderato Nuevo”.

“Hemos formado la Planilla Liderato Nuevo porque sabemos que solo los miembros pueden remediar la situación de este sindicato” dijo Richard Berg, un delegado del sindicato en los Hospitales de la Universidad de Chicago. “Y ahora hemos comprobado que los miembros podemos retar a las personas que están en poder, y que podemos ganar”. Berg es uno de los delegados que acaban de ser eligidos.

Los Hospitales de La Universidad de Chicago intentaron despedir a Berg por medio de cargos falsos en el medio de la campaña. Las protestas que surgieron en una forma inmediata por parte de sus compañeros del sindicato le restauraron su trabajo. Esto también hizo claro a todo el mundo que la gerencia ha estado trabajando mano a mano con las fuerzas corruptas que existen en el sindicato.

La Planilla de Liderato Nuevo ganó 11 de los 20 puestos de delegado del local, y 13 de los 20 puestos de alternados. Esta delegación piensa ir a la convención en Filadelfia para luchar para el derecho de cada miembro de eligir a sus propios delegados en el sitio de trabajo, de permitir que todos los miembros inspeccionen a cualquier cambio en el contrato antes de ratificarlo, y de limitar los salarios de los funcionarios del sindicato. El actual presidente del local 743 gana un sueldote de $190,000, pagado por los miembros del sindicato por supuesto.

Este otoño, los miembros del local 743 votarán de nuevo. Habrán dos elecciones importantes. También van a estar votando a favor de candidatos que van a controlar al local del sindicato y quien va a controlar al sindicato al nivel internacional.

La Planilla de Liderato Nuevo estará apoyando a la planilla de Tom Leedham “Poder a la Base” en la convención y en las elecciones en el otoño.

La elección de oficiales del local 743 está conmoviendo al movimiento sindical en Chicago. En el Local 743, miembros han mostrado que son capaces de retar a la vieja guardia de los teamsters. Control democrático de este local de 14,000 miembros será una victoria para todos los trabajadores.

Continuando con la elección corrupta la unión tenía un representante leal y la companía tenía a alguien que no les daba muchos problemas. El agente de la unión, Richard López, casi nunca se vio. Y cuando iba a la companía, esquivaba a los trabajadores, y se metía a la oficina del presidente para tener una junta en privado.

Recientemente cuando una de las ocupaciones estuvo vacante, López trato de poner a uno de sus seguidores en lugar de haber hacho una elección. Siguiendo el ejemplo de López, su representante se la pasaba tomando café en sus tiempos libres con el jefe ignorando las necesidades de los trabajadores.

Después de varias semanas de que los trabajadores vieran esto pensaron que ya era suficiente. Comenzaron a organizar juntas en la casa de uno de los trabajadores, hablaron de sus problemas y de las negociaciones del contrato de la unión que venían. Decidieron presionar a Richard López para que hubiera una elección limpia. Con esto se aseguraban que se elegiría a Tony Caldera.

Tony se conocía como una persona que no temía confrontar a los jefes o los líderes corruptos de la unión. Él había postulado para Vice Presidente del local 743 como parte del grupo reformista New Leadership (Nuevo Liderazgo) (Vea ¡Defiéndete! del invierno de 1999.) Como inmigrante de México, tenía reputación por todo el local 743 como alguien que peleaba por los derechos de los trabajadores sin importar donde hubieran nacido.

La fe de los trabajadores para con Caldera parece estar bien puesta. Después de su elección victoriosa dijo, “Yo tomo café con los trabajadores, no con el jefe. Cuando los trabajadores están unidos pueden proteger sus derechos y negociar mejores contratos. Y eso es lo que haremos aquí.”

At the May 1 march in Chicago, three busloads of workers and their families came to represent Teamsters Local 743. The union represents workers at hospitals, nursing homes and small manufacturing plants in the Chicago area. The factory workers include a large number of immigrants, mostly from Mexico and Central America.

Fight Back! interviewed Tony Caldera and Emma Moreno, representatives of the union.

Fight Back!: Why did so many of your members march?

Tony Caldera: They came to celebrate May 1, which is the workers’ holiday everywhere. They marched also for amnesty for all.

Emma Moreno: The immigrant workers in the little workshops supported the march for equality for all in the U.S. And they marched for family reunification for those threatened by deportations of family members without papers. In addition, many know that Chicago was the place where the Haymarket Martyrs fell in the struggle for the eight-hour day.

Fight Back!: What are the concerns that the workers have?

Caldera: They are threatened by the ‘no match letters’ from the Social Security Administration. The employers are using these as an excuse to wipe out seniority. We have examples where a worker is legal, but had worked with another name for some years. Companies are taking away the seniority for those earlier years. We are on the side of those immigrant workers – they earned the right to their seniority.

Fight Back!: Why is it important for Local 743 to be at the march?

Caldera: The old officers in Local 743 did not fight for immigrant workers. They went so far as to threaten them with deportation for complaining about bad representation. At many of the small factories, the wages were low, the work was dangerous and the union was in bed with the companies. This is why the Latino workers supported the New Leadership Slate for office.

We took office on January 1. When May 1 came, we called on the workers to march to show we can demand more power for all. The immigrants don’t have to be scared.

Moreno: The union is the voice of the workers. The immigrant workers, mostly Mexicans, need their union to fight for full equality. This includes legalization. Equality also means they have the right to representation at their workplace. The immigrant workers, whether Mexican or Polish, pay dues. However they told us in the past they only saw their representatives at contract time. The union never called on them to march on May 1. Now the workers are looking for a change.
