Trans Day of Visibility Statement by the Women’s & LBGTQ Work Team of the Freedom Road Socialist Organization

On Transgender Day of Visibility, Freedom Road Socialist Organization unites with the masses of transgender people who refuse to be erased from public life. This past year saw an escalation in anti-trans Executive Orders from the Trump administration and reactionary legislation in states across the country. The struggle for visibility has been hard-fought and must be defended. Now is the time to hit the streets to demand trans liberation.

Attacks on trans healthcare have taken center stage in Trump’s anti-LGBTQ agenda. While 27 states have already enacted laws to limit gender affirming care for trans youth, Trump intends to ban this healthcare nationwide by blocking Medicaid and Medicare funding for all services at hospitals that also provide pediatric gender-affirming care. Trump has given hospitals an ultimatum: end their youth gender-affirming care programs or face bankruptcy. Already, this has resulted in a pause in care at many facilities, including those in states where gender-affirming care for youth is still protected under local law.

The Trump-appointed 4th Circuit Court takes these attacks a step further, ruling that West Virginia’s Medicaid program can exclude coverage of all gender-affirming care procedures, even for consenting adults. The decision opens the door for similar bans in other states. This was never about protecting children. Attacks on trans youth chip away at the bodily autonomy of all trans people, and we are seeing the true plans of reactionary forces take shape in real time. Our enemies seek to eliminate gender-affirming care in its entirety and to stamp trans people out of existence, and we must fight them on every front.

The civil rights of trans people in the United States are extremely uneven and precarious. Laws vary from state to state. In Kansas, the drivers licenses of trans people are being revoked en masse. Conversely, in Minnesota, a trans refuge bill was passed to protect patients and providers of gender-affirming care. Depending on where they live, trans people face bathroom bills and sports bans, are forcibly misgendered in schools, left unprotected from workplace discrimination, and more. But this polarization also offers fertile soil for the seeds of struggle. Organized resistance is the only way to beat back these attacks, defend our gains, and truly improve the conditions in the lives of transgender people.

Across the country, members of Freedom Road Socialist Organization have led the fight for trans liberation by protesting cuts to gender-affirming care, opposing anti-LGBTQ bills, rallying their communities against hate crimes, and demanding justice for stolen trans lives. FRSO is involved in yearly events for Trans Day of Visibility, Trans Day of Remembrance, as well as protests during Pride Month that revive the revolutionary spirit of Stonewall. Campaigns to lower the cost of name changes and bolster sanctuary resources for trans refugees ignite the struggle for trans liberation year-round. Where people stand and fight, there are victories to be won.

In its accelerating decline, the U.S. Empire will continue to launch repressive attacks against working and oppressed people as a means to prevent revolutionary change. We must help those fighting for liberation of any kind to see trans liberation as intertwined with their own. Visibility is only the beginning. One day, trans people will be more than visible—they will have the political power to take their destinies into their own hands.

The United States and Israel are waging a war on Iran. It is a war that is unjust and unprovoked. There have been widespread civilian casualties in Tehran and other cities, including reports of 85 schoolchildren dead in Minab.

This is a war that the U.S chose. Trump walked away from negotiations, then enlisted apartheid Israel, and now, bombs and missiles are raining down on schools and TV stations. Iran has every right to respond.

This year comes in a context. The decline of U.S. imperialism is accelerating. Trump is trying to preserve the dying U.S. empire, and control of the Middle East is a part of that project. Last year the U.S. and Israel waged a failed 12-day war that was meant to break Iran.

Now they are back again for another try. Along with his partner in crime Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump will face more defeat and failure – if not sooner, then later. Either way they will meet the fate of the paper tigers that have gone before them.

Iran is charting an independent course. It stands at the center of an axis of resistance that includes the progressive, patriotic forces of Palestine, Yemen, Lebanon and Iraq. The free people of the Middle East won’t live under U.S. domination. They are determined to end the genocidal occupation of the Zionists. So, the defenders of empire will have their hands full.

Here in the U.S., progressives and revolutionaries need to go all out, uniting all who can be united to end the war on Iran. What the U.S. and Israel are doing to Iran is crime, and it needs to be judged accordingly.

Trump is now talking about regime change. The truth of the matter is that we do need a regime change – a regime change in Washington DC. As we oppose the war on Iran, and build a broad front against Trump, we can and will make the U.S. ungovernable.

In the Twin Cities, Trump’s drive for mass deportations hit a brick wall. The FRSO Labor Commission salutes the brave immigrant movement. The protests say it clear: “ICE out now!”

The thorns in Trump’s side are many. On January 23, 100,000 Minnesotans took to the streets in the 20-below winter. The state AFL-CIO joined the day of action. Union locals from the SEIU, UNITE HERE, ATU, and MFE showed out in a big way. About 900 businesses closed up shop. Most of these were small, neighborhood stores in solidarity. Many progressives called out of work to protest.

These forces, and more, followed the lead of the immigrant community. They followed in the footsteps of the May 1, 2006 “Day Without Immigrants,” which revived International Workers Day in this country. For their part in this broad front, many Twin Cities unions are an example for workers from coast to coast.

Some call this a general strike, but that is not true. It was mass outpouring against ICE and mass deportations. It was a remarkable achievement led by Minnesota’s labor movement. Trade union activists can learn from it as ICE continues its campaign of mass deportations in cities across the U.S. It does not make a great event greater by asserting that it was something it was not.

To rise to the level of a general strike, the movement would have to do something different. The bulk of workers in major industries would shut down production. The city’s economy would grind to a halt.

Let’s be honest about how far we’ve come. Let’s not let ourselves off the hook to push farther. There’s more worker power to unleash. ICE has come under fire, but the working class still has guns of a different caliber.

Only fighting unions can employ the weapon of a general strike. To organize against the capitalists, it takes organizing on the shop floor against the boss. Unions with a class struggle attitude – an “us vs. them” mindset – are the basis for lethal strikes to the system. There’s nothing in the world like a militant labor movement.

Union leaders and the rank and file should go to demonstrations. They should pass resolutions to protect immigrant members on the job. They should fight for contracts and MOUs that stop employer cooperation with ICE.

There is much to be done. Our morale is high, our ambitions even higher.

Greg Abbott is a lifelong enemy of the working class. His administration has overseen brutal attacks on immigrants, the criminalization of protest, assaults on public education and the systematic weakening of labor protections in Texas.

As early as 2017 Governor Greg Abbott announced a call for legislation that prohibited both state and local governments from deducting union dues from public employees’ paychecks.

In 2023 Greg Abbott signed HB 2127, the Texas Regulatory Consistency Act, nicknamed the “death star” bill, which barred cities and counties from passing regulations that are stricter than state ones. It also overturned local rules, such as ordinances in Austin and Dallas that mandate rest breaks for construction workers.

In 2024 Greg Abbott was one of six governors, including those from Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina and Tennessee, to support a statement condemning the United Autoworkers campaign to organize the South of the United States. This came after massive victories from the UAW union in organizing workers at the Chattanooga, Tennessee Volkswagen factory.

Greg Abbott, being a huge supporter of “right to work,” has always done his absolute best to destroy the efforts of the working class to organize and fight against bosses.

Greg Abbott has built a career serving the most reactionary sections of the Texas ruling class, oil and gas executives, real estate speculators, private prison profiteers and anti-union corporations, as working people have been left in the dust with stagnant wages and soaring costs of living.

Besides his anti-labor policies, Greg Abbott spent upwards of $3 billion in the deployment of National Guard and State Troopers to harass immigrants. The passing of Senate Bill 4 making “illegal immigration” a crime; busing immigrants out of Texas to Chicago, Washington DC and New York City, and installing razor wire along the Rio Grande are some of the many injustices Abbott has committed against immigrants.

Abbott’s cronies have turned Texas into a testing ground for union busting, attacks on immigrants, and cradling of the reactionaries. Now as Abbott seeks to rehabilitate his image in his bid for re-election, he has turned to sympathetic union leadership amongst the Teamsters in Texas who will do his bidding to enact anti-labor policies.

The decision to endorse Greg Abbott by the Teamster Joint Councils 80 and 58 is totally against the will of the thousands of Teamsters who call Texas their home.

Union members are not responsible for the cowardice and opportunism of their conservative union leadership right here in the heart of Texas. Rank-and-file Teamsters, many of them immigrants, oppressed nationalities and low-wage earners, are among Abbott and his billionaire backers’ primary targets. People’s interests lie in organizing and struggling against Abbott and the reactionary forces he represents, not in being used as political cover for them.

Texas Teamster leaders should take a page from the book of Teamster Councils in California (JC42 and JC7), New York (JC16), or Locals 810, 638 and 25 that have put forward resolutions to protect immigrant workers and oppose raids from ICE. Local unions outside of the Teamsters, like SEIU 26, Minnesota AFL CIO, ATU 1005, and UFCW 663 are a few of the many local unions that have put forward anti-ICE statements and demanded protections for immigrants. The Teamsters leadership in Texas should learn from their counterparts and demand protections for workers who look to them for leadership.

The labor movement cannot hope to survive—let alone win real power—by bowing to reactionaries who despise us. We cannot build power by allowing unions to become a breeding ground of narrow self-interest at the hands of those who collaborate with people whose interests are oriented towards destroying the working class. Labor's home is on the shop floor and on the streets, not in the halls of the RNC where power brokers like Greg Abbott cut deals to attack the working class.

Union leaders must do everything in their power to protect their members, especially immigrants who face the real terror of kidnapping by ICE. They should put forward a positive demand like legalization for all and lobby against politicians to make this demand a reality. They must make their home in the working class once again and defend the rank and file with tooth and nail.

The rank and file must not only fight against the bosses on the shop floor. It is only by continuing to build a militant movement of rank-and-file Teamsters that we will be able to turn our union into a real fighting organization of the working class.

The Freedom Road Socialist Organization stands with our Filipino comrades to demand the immediate release of Chantal Anicoche from military custody, an end to de facto martial law on the island of Mindoro and an end to U.S.-backed violations of human rights and humanitarian law in the Philippines and around the globe.

Chantal – a 24-year-old Filipino American community leader – went missing after a bombing attack by the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) in Abra de Ilog, Occidental Mindoro on New Year’s Day. One week later, on January 8, the AFP’s 203rd Infantry Brigade released a video showing them “finding” Chantal – visibly frightened – in the woods. She has remained in military custody since then.

We join the chorus of voices around the globe who are questioning the credibility of these videos. How is it that Chantal spent a week right under the AFP’s noses – less than half a mile from the site of their attack, if we believe their claims – before being found?

We are concerned for Chantal’s safety. The history of the AFP is a history of human rights abuses. Activists in their custody are routinely tortured, and many face fabricated charges based on planted evidence. The only way to ensure that Chantal is not subject to further harm is for the AFP to release her immediately and return her to her family and community.

Finally, we recognize that one of the basic problems faced by the Philippines is U.S. imperialism. The United States extracts natural resources and cheap labor from the Philippines and sends back guns and bombs for the AFP to turn on anyone who struggles for freedom. As revolutionaries in the United States, we stand in solidarity with the people of the Philippines in their struggle for national democracy.

Condenamos el brutal asesinato de Renee Nicole Good, una observadora comunitaria de 37 años asesinada a tiros por el agente de ICE Jonathan Ross en Minneapolis el 7 de enero de 2026. Todos vimos la evidencia en video que muestran a agentes de ICE rodeando su vehículo y abriendo fuego. Fue una ejecución a plena luz del día.

Entendemos este asesinato en el contexto de la creciente campaña de terror del gobierno de Trump contra los inmigrantes. Han sido meses de deportaciones masivas, familias separadas, campos de detención y violencia abierta. Trump ha desplegado a ICE para imponer una agenda racista y anti-inmigrante dirigida contra chicanos, mexicanos, centroamericanos, somalíes y otros. Trump también tuvo la audacia de defender al agente que apretó el gatillo, mostrando el desprecio de la administración por la verdad y la vida humana. El mismo día del asesinato de Renee, agentes de ICE irrumpieron en los terrenos de una escuela preparatoria cercana a la hora de la salida, aventando personas al suelo frente a estudiantes gritando. Esa noche, miles inundaron la esquina donde asesinaron a Renee para exigir el fin de la ola de terror de ICE.

Trump is responding to Minnesota’s wave of struggle against mass deportations by threating to invoke the Insurrection Act. If he does so, it will be a case of lifting a rock only to drop it on one’s own feet.

In December the Department of Homeland Security announced the Twin Cities would be the focus of “Operation Metro Surge,” accompanied by the claim it would be the largest anti-immigrant action in U.S. history.

The response was mass protests and confrontations with ICE agents on the ground. On January 7 Renee Good was murdered by ICE and the result was a storm of struggle, including a 100,000-person march in Minneapolis and demonstrations all over the U.S.

Then on January 14, ICE shot a man from Venezuela in North Minneapolis. Protesters converged on the scene. ICE fled, leaving behind some of their vehicles, which were then destroyed.

So, Trump is threatening the Insurrection Act to scare people. That won’t work. When Trump sent troops to LA this past summer it was like pouring gasoline on a fire. The fight against mass deportations did not stop – it intensified. Same thing in Chicago and Washington DC: Trump threatens or deploys troops, and people still fill the streets. The same thing will happen if Trump uses the Insurrection Act.

There are some people who say that mass, militant resistance to deportations is a provocation that allows additional political space for Trump to employ repression. This is exactly wrong. Militant struggle is how to defeat ICE and how we defeat the entirety of Trump’s agenda.

It is no exaggeration to say that millions of people have taken to the street since Trump took office. We can be certain that millions more will join us. We will unite the many and defeat the few!

The U.S. is sending signals that military action against Iran is imminent. Troops have been partially evacuated from Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, indicating preparations for an escalation. Iran has been clear that it will respond to attacks in kind. This is the latest bad chapter in a campaign of assassinations, sanctions, threats and aggression spanning decades—all aimed at crushing Iran’s sovereignty and pulling apart its role in the resistance to U.S. empire in the region.

Iran is a sovereign country, but even more importantly, it has played a progressive and steadfast role in the politics of the wider Middle East. Iran stands firmly with the Palestinian resistance, and backs the anti-imperialist forces in Lebanon, Iraq, and Yemen. The U.S. arms and funds Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza, and Iran has—in word and deed—supported those defending Palestinian life and dignity. This is why Iran is targeted again and again. The U.S. is much less concerned about nuclear threats than they are with punishing any nation that refuses to submit to imperialism and domination.

The anti-war movement should get prepared and stay ready to act. Each and every attack on Iran must be responded to. Wars waged by imperialism are not a game. They mean death and devastation that reverberates long after the dust has settled. We reject any military strike on Iran and will take to the streets to say so.

Over the past week or two, the US-Marcos regime has mounted a frenzied media and social media campaign to intimidate and threaten the Filipino youth, who, more and more are growing disenchanted amid deep and widespread social ills, and are being drawn to question the rotten ruling system and seek radical and revolutionary ways to end corruption, injustice and abuses by those in power.

This campaign to intimidate and threaten the Filipino youth is part of Marcos’ arsenal of fascist tactics to maintain his grip on power and preserve the ruling system, by suppressing the youth’s and people’s aspirations for change.

This blatant assault against the youth is spearheaded by the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), the NTF-Elcac, and their mercenary hacks behind the Marcos government’s propaganda machinery. They have mobilized funds to activate and coordinate their social media troll army to drown out posts critical of the Marcos government in a deluge of spam comments, and throw their weight around to push their narrative in the press and public discourse.

The Marcos psyops campaign heightened after a student researcher from the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, 22-year old Jerlyn Rose Doydora, died on January 1 in Abra de Ilog, Mindoro Occidental, amid relentless aerial bombing and strafing by the AFP, following an armed encounter. Another youth, 24-year old Chantal Anicoche, was taken into custody by the fascist soldiers, and illegally detained for a week, before being surfaced amid public outcry. Three Mangyan children were reportedly killed in the aerial bombing which was carried out in the proximity of mountain communities.

These are just the latest of the grave abuses being committed by Marcos’ armed forces in Mindoro and in other parts of the country. In its desperation to cover up their fascist crimes, the AFP imposed an information blackout on Abra de Ilog, using brazen state terrorism and martial law tactics. These include the use of the old Marcosian trick of bussing in civilians to stage “rallies,” to obstruct, intimidate and suppress the efforts of various democratic organizations and human rights groups seeking to conduct an independent fact-finding investigation into the incidents. The fascist regime wants to make it appear that people approve of the military’s control of their communities, or that they support the planned mining operations and “renewable energy” projects of big business operations that will drive them away from their land.

The death of Jerlyn and the illegal military incarceration of Chantal has put to spotlight how growing numbers of young intellectuals today have become disillusioned with the reactionary government’s lies and deception, and critical of its policies. This has become particularly conspicuous over the past few months as thousands of young people walked out of their university campuses and joined street marches in outrage over cases of large-scale corruption.

They have lent their voices to the Filipino peoples’ clamor for justice. While Marcos, his fellow bureaucrat capitalists and their big bourgeois comprador accomplices amass hundreds of billions of pesos from rigged government contracts, majority of the Filipino people toil day in and day out to survive increasingly intolerable social and economic conditions.

The burgeoning youth rebellion is bound to grow. Like many young people around the globe, the Filipino Gen-Zs are breaking out of their digital shells and establishing real world networks with their fellow youth, as well as with the broad masses of the people. Amid corruption, injustice and abuse of power, many young intellectuals are adopting a socially critical mindset and have become acutely aware of the gross social ills plaguing the country, of the iniquitous ownership and distribution of the country’s resources, and the oppressive conditions suffered by the masses of toiling people under the minority ruling classes who hold economic and political power.

They are critically aware how workers wages are being kept low despite the rise in the cost of living, how millions are idled by the lack of jobs and forced to eke out a living as contractual, outsourced, gig or platform workers, how peasants suffer from landlessness, dispossession and militarization, how fisherfolk are deprived of their fishing grounds by big capitalist trawlers, how jeepney drivers are being dislocated by corporate takeover of their routes and franchises, and how all other oppressed classes suffer from myriad other forms of injustices. They youth themselves suffer from these conditions. Millions are denied their right to education. The small percentage who make it to universities suffer repression and face the bleak prospects of decent employment. Under the priorities of the Marcos fascist regime, the only certain prospect is to join the police, military or paramilitary forces, to serve as spies, foot soldiers or cannon fodder against their fellow oppressed people.

Fueled by heightening imperialist hegemonism in all parts of the world, and US military intervention in the Philippines, rising numbers of young Filipinos are breaking free from the colonial mindset—imposed on every Filipino since childhood—and embrace patriotism in its stead. They are growing indignant over the imperialist US support for the genocide against Palestine and its military aggression against the sovereign state of Venezuela. They are enraged especially by barefaced US military intervention in the Philippines and armed provocations in Asia, dragging the country to the possibility of war which serves US strategic geopolitical, falsely portrayed as “defense of Philippine freedom.”

They are finding themselves reconnected with the country’s history as a colony and semicolony of foreign imperial powers, who plundered and condemned the country to a permanent state of economic backwardness and dependence. The Filipino people’s aspiration for genuine national freedom and social justice burns steadily in their hearts. More and more young Filipinos are united with the broad masses in the fervent desire to change the course of the country’s history, in the resistance to end the reign of corruption, abuse, injustice and foreign domination, and determination to usher in a new era of sovereignty, progress and modernity.

The Filipino people and youth have witnessed in past weeks how Marcos is using the whole range of state power to preserve the system of corruption and abuse, even amid the people’s uproar. Some lower-tier thieves have been scapegoated and turned to sacrificial lambs, even as high-ranking bureaucrat capitalists continue to rake in in billions of pesos in kickbacks, pork barrel and other forms of corruption.

Many young intellectuals have become keenly aware of the limits of their social and political power to change society. They seek to build solidarity with the millions of workers, peasants, the semi-proletariat in both cities and countryside, the fisherfolk, the indigenous people and other oppressed and exploited classes who comprise the majority of the people.

The Marcos fascist regime, especially its armed forces, holds the socially critical youth in complete contempt and a threat to their rule. They malign young intellectuals as “victims of ideological grooming,” as if they are mindless sheep. To deflect blame for their crimes, they have gone to the extent of intimidating the parents of victims of state terrorism, coercing them to depict their own children as lacking the agency for independent and critical thought, or the ability to commit themselves to something greater than themselves–the people’s cause for genuine freedom and democracy.

The Filipino people and their young intellectuals will have none of fascist intimidation and threats. History has shown that attempts to suppress intellectuals have succeeded only in further stimulating their critical and inquisitive minds. There is bound to emerge a strong current of young students, teachers, academics, scientists and other intellectuals flowing to urban poor and rural communities to investigate, see for themselves the concrete problems of the people, and learn from the masses the crucial importance of getting organized and waging collective struggle as a way of fighting for their interests.

Not a few academics, researchers, journalists, students, scientists, even lower officials of the government agencies have visited units of the New People’s Army to gain a deeper understanding of revolutionary views, and the reasons that compel ordinary people to wage armed revolution. Many continue to be drawn to the path of resistance not because of some scheme of “deception” and “manipulation,” rather because the revolutionary ideas promoted by the CPP and NPA reflect the people’s desire for national freedom and democracy. The people and the youth will embrace only those ideas that express their hopes and aspirations. Many from the current generation of young Filipinos see the revolution as the only path towards attaining the people’s aspirations for a free and prosperous future, and have committed themselves to face all the hardship and sacrifices to march along this difficult road.

More and more people see Marcos, along with the AFP, the PNP, NTF-Elcac and other repressive agencies, as the epitome of government corruption, injustice, abuse and subservience to foreign powers. As in the past, it is the oppression and intolerable conditions under Marcos that rouse the people to join the NPA and wage revolution. Indeed by negative example, Marcos has virtually become the number one recruiter of the New People’s Army.

We call on the Filipino youth to continue sharpening their scientific minds and reject attempts to stifle their critical thinking. Deepen your understanding of the country’s history and the current concrete conditions of the broad masses of the people under semicolonial and semifeudal system. Study and learn from the masses, and determine for yourself, the profound necessity of waging the people’s democratic revolution.

We condemn the brutal killing of Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old community observer gunned down by ICE agent Jonathan Ross in Minneapolis on January 7, 2026. We all saw video evidence that shows ICE officers surrounding her vehicle and opening fire. It was an execution in broad daylight.

We understand this killing in the context of the Trump administration’s escalating campaign of terror against immigrants. It has been months of mass deportations, family separations, detention camps, and open violence. Trump has deployed ICE to enforce a racist anti-immigrant agenda targeting Chicanos, Mexicanos, Central Americans, Somalis, and others. People standing in solidarity with immigrants, like Renee Nicole Good, acting as a community observer, are apparently targets too. The death toll is mounting. And the very next day, Luis David Nico Moncada and Yorlenys Betzabeth Zambrano-Contreras were shot and hospitalized by ICE in Portland.

At the heart of this brutality is national oppression at the U.S. Mexico border and beyond that treats human beings as disposable and criminalizes their very existence. Degrading these communities and keeping them in the shadows is good for the capitalists.

In the wake of Renee’s murder Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem blamed the victim and labeling her a “domestic terrorist” who “weaponized her vehicle.” These are absurd things to say, moreover they are lies contradicted by every frame of available footage. They claimed ICE agents were “fearing for their lives.” We've heard that one before. Trump also had the audacity to defend the officer who pulled the trigger, showcasing the administration’s contempt for truth and human life. On the very same day as Renee’s killing, ICE agents stormed the grounds of a nearby high school at dismissal time, throwing people to the ground in front of screaming students. That night, thousands flooded the corner where Renee was killed to demand an end to ICE’s terror spree.

The people have had enough. In the days that have followed, there have been hundreds of protests and demonstrations across the country. All conscious people, workers, students, faith communities, unions, and grassroots organizations should join the call to action, stand up and fight.

The International League of Peoples’ Struggle vehemently condemns the blatant invasion of Venezuela by US military forces that bombed military and civilian targets and culminated in the illegal capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. This act is the latest in a months-long campaign by the Trump regime to blockade and wage war on the Venezuelan people in order to seize their sovereign land and resources and enact regime change in Venezuela that will bow to US economic interest.

It is unclear as of this writing how many deaths and injuries were caused by the US airstrikes, but what is clear is the complete disregard for civilian lives by the US. This utterly exposes their false justification of acting on behalf of “peace and freedom” for the people of Venezuela. Previous US airstrikes off the coasts of Venezuela and Colombia have already killed over 100 people and damaged the economic livelihood of Venezuela’s fishing sector.

This aggression did not start with Trump’s escalation over the past few months but instead follows years of systematic aggression by the previous Trump, Biden, Obama, and Bush regimes since Venezuela declared its complete independence from US economic dominance of its oil sector and elected Hugo Chavez as President. The capture of Maduro to stand trial within a US court for so-called “Narco Terrorism” mirrors the same fate of Panamanian President Manuel Noriega who, after years of ruling under US patronage, was overthrown and captured during the 1989 US invasion of Panama and tried in the US. This latest act is in line with Trump’s declaration of his “New Monroe Doctrine” that is merely a resurrected name for the same US imperialist strategy to openly confront its economic rivals like China and Russia and maintain its position as number one imperialist power in the world.

The US has repeatedly made clear through its actions that it is the number one violator of international law and most dangerous imperialist in the world today, with the capture of Maduro being just the latest example. This follows the US and Zionist war against Iran, the complete US support for the genocidal Zionist onslaught against Palestine and all of West Asia, recent airstrikes impacting civilian areas of Nigeria, and many more examples of US complete disregard for international law and unbridled violence to desperately hold onto its crumbling position of world imperialist hegemon.

The people of Venezuela are rallying to defend their sovereignty. The masses have taken to the streets en masse and armed themselves to boldly stand up against foreign imperialist aggression to defend their country. The Venezuela government has mobilized to defend the people and respond to the US aggression. The people and government of Venezuela have called on the people of the world to stand in solidarity with their fight to defend their land and the victories of the Bolivarian Revolution. ILPS calls on its members to answer this call and take to the streets and outside of US embassies to express mass indignation against US imperialist aggression. The Freedom Road Socialist Organization condemns the brazen and unlawful U.S. military assault on Venezuela and the kidnapping of President Maduro. This is an act of war under the ridiculous pretense of “fighting drug trafficking.” A look at “friends of the U.S.” in the region, and their activities, proves this has nothing to do with drugs. It is about oil. And it's about beating Maduro’s government and the people of Venezuela into submission for the insatiable greed of Trump and his Wall Street gang of backers.

In the early morning hours of January 3, 2026, explosions lit up the skies over Caracas at least seven times. U.S. forces launched a coordinated attack on civilian and military sites across Venezuela including in Miranda, Aragua and La Guairá. President Nicolás Maduro and the First Lady Cilia Flores were kidnapped by U.S. military forces. Vice President Delcy Rodriguez has demanded proof of life. Trump quickly claimed credit on social media, puffing his chest about the capture and “successful strike.” It is pure criminality in a military costume.

To capture the president of another country is outrageous. It is the same script they ran with the failed 2002 coup against President Hugo Chávez. But make no mistake: the Bolivarian Revolution is not going down with this attack. The linchpin is not any single person. There is a whole movement with deep roots in communities and among workers, strong layers of leadership, and well-built institutions. Vice President Delcy Rodríguez and the rest of the key figures in the constitutional chain of command are standing ready, shoulder to shoulder with a united PSUV (United Socialist Party of Venezuela) and millions of conscious and organized Venezuelans. The fight continues, and mass mobilizations in the current moment are critical, to keep the U.S.-backed opposition hiding in their holes. Mobilizations here at home against Trump's agenda and opposing U.S. war now need to show up and show out, too.

For over 25 years, U.S. imperialism has been waging a relentless campaign of economic sanctions and sabotage, slanderous lies in the media, and now open acts of war. Every tactic has failed so far because the Bolivarian Revolution is rooted in the will of the Venezuelan people, and the people refuse to kneel.

The Venezuelan government has declared that this an illegal military aggression, like the ones by Britain, the Netherlands and other powers 100 years ago. They invoked President Cipriano Castro, who in 1902 declared: “The insolent foot of the foreigner has profaned the sacred soil of the Fatherland.” And with the spirit of Bolívar, it also rightly calls on the people:“¡Pueblo a la calle!”

People to the streets!

We echo that call here in the U.S. people should stand up and demonstrate to demand an immediate end to all U.S. military operations in Venezuela. We reject Trump’s lies, we reject regime change, and we reject war for oil.

The great revolutionary Hugo Chávez taught us: “In any circumstance or new difficulty, of whatever size, the response of all patriots is… unity, struggle, battle, and victory.”

This is a battle for Venezuela’s future, and a battle for ours. Does the world belong to the people or to U.S. empire, pillaging, plundering and crossing every red line? The answer is not in the boardrooms of Wall Street or in the White House in Washington D.C., it’s in the streets of Caracas, Chicago, and everywhere people say: NO TO U.S. WARS!

The new year arrives with sharpening crises and struggle. A year into his second term and Trump is back more brazen and unhinged than ever. He and his cabal of billionaire bigots have rolled out an agenda that is violent and reactionary: this is most clearly seen in sending masked and often unmarked ICE, Border Patrol and other Homeland Security to terrorize mainly Chicano and Latino communities. From attacks on labor to dragging LGBTQ and reproductive rights backwards, from cutting climate protections to “unleashing” National Guard troops into cities with Democratic mayors, Trump is trying to push the country backwards on many fronts.

Abroad, Trump’s lashing out and aggression points to the accelerating decline of U.S. empire. Tariff wars, cold wars, hot wars – everything’s on the table. After 25 years of failed coups and sabotage, Venezuela stands firm. Trump and Wall Street want the oil of Venezuela, but President Maduro and the people of Venezuela want sovereignty more.

At home, the “strongest best economy ever” Trump boasts isn’t looking so hot. For the billionaires, who probably don’t do things like buy coffee (up 18%) and beef (up 15%) things are great. For the rest of us, inflation just creeps higher and higher. The Big Beautiful Bill is a reverse Robin Hood scheme that squeezes middle and low-income households and redirects money upwards to the capitalist class. Starting January 1, the subsidized healthcare plans that millions rely on will be gone, and they’ll see their premiums double or triple with the new legislation. Student loan payments have restarted, and wage garnishments are set to begin. Trump promised to bring down costs, but the subtext was, only for the billionaires.

The uprisings and broad waves of resistance in the past year proved that people are not looking to take this mess lying down. Trump’s attacks came fast and furious, and many are now stalled as movements resist them and people become more organized.

The immigrant rights fight is the leading edge of this struggle, and the Southwest Emergency Summit Against Deportations in Los Angeles in spring 2025 was a turning point. There, community organizers, unions, socialist groups, and Chicano and Latino families pulled forces together with the demand of an end to the raids and mass deportations that began to sweep the Southwest and cities across the country. Fighting for sanctuary city laws, legal defense, community patrols, defense against political repression and mass mobilizations swept other cities, too.

From LA to Chicago to Portland, the people fought back against the detention centers, disrupted ICE raids and deportations, and brought thousands into the streets. And in DC when federal troops were deployed, the people came out in force again to say our neighborhoods are not yours to occupy. Everywhere the forces of repression go, they meet bravery and defiance.

The No Kings protests brought millions into the streets to stand tall against Trump’s crooked agenda. We had, and have, choices: help raise the level of political thinking and lead some energy into strategic and durable struggle, or stand on the sidelines and criticize or oppose. Trump is hugely unpopular now and things are coming apart in this country. In 2026, we can bet on more opportunities to build the broad front against Trump bigger, broader and badder.

The missing piece is that we need a new party of the working class. We need a disciplined, fighting organization that can lead and unite all the fronts of the people’s struggles – communities fighting national oppression, the fight for immigrant rights, workers struggles, fighting climate change, defending women’s and LGBTQ rights, and the anti-war struggle into a united front – the force that brings the monopoly capitalist class to its knees.

In the Freedom Road Socialist Organization, that’s what we intend to build. We’re in unions, community organizations, student groups and coalitions connecting immediate fights to the revolutionary aim of socialism. We’re finding and forging new revolutionaries in the course of all these struggles.

We are going to keep proving that when we fight, we win. Together we will make this country ungovernable. The New Year is upon us and this will be a new year of struggle.

El declive y los fracasos de EE. UU. lo hacen peligroso

El declive del imperialismo estadounidense continúa a un ritmo más rápido. Trump reconoce esto, y lo cubre con sus gritos desesperados de “¡Estados Unidos primero!” Trump está cada vez más dispuesto a burlarse de las leyes internacionales y arremeter debido a la reducción de la ventaja de Estados Unidos a escala mundial.

El 9 de diciembre, dos F/A-18 Super Hornets volaron profundamente en el Golfo de Venezuela, violando el espacio aéreo y la soberanía de Venezuela. Estados Unidos también envió EA-18G Growlers para interferencias electrónicas y un dron de vigilancia MQ-4C.

Luego, el 10 de diciembre, Trump presumió que Estados Unidos se apoderó del petrolero. Después, Trump anunció nuevas sanciones contra miembros de la familia Maduro y un empresario panameño cuyos petroleros trasladan petróleo venezolano. Trump también anunció que planea apoderarse de más petroleros. Al mismo tiempo, los petroleros de Chevron continúan entrando y saliendo sin ser molestados desde Venezuela a Estados Unidos.

Maduro se mantiene firme

Cada día que Maduro se mantiene firme es una vergüenza para los planes de Trump. Cada día que el pueblo de Venezuela permanezca libre para decidir sus propios asuntos es otro día en que los reaccionarios enojados y amargos de Miami están acosando a Trump y al secretario de Estado Marco Rubio para iniciar una guerra.

Es cada vez más evidente a medida que los medios corporativos y la mayoría de los estadounidenses aprenden sobre esta situación que Trump, Rubio y Hegseth son despiadados, sin ley y sin alma. Maduro y Venezuela permanecen inquebrantables ante la agresión imperialista

En Venezuela, el 8 de diciembre, el presidente Maduro se comprometió a expandir la democracia y el poder popular con un plan llamado “Gobierno Comunal de Transición al Socialismo”. Esto involucraría a las estructuras comunales existentes de poder popular y bancos comunitarios y buscaría más del doble de su número en todo el país, especialmente en áreas que nunca los han tenido.

Al duplicar el número de venezolanos armados en las milicias populares y avanzar para ampliar la participación y el poder político en manos de los ciudadanos, Maduro y el PSUV están avanzando la revolución. Están cumpliendo con las metas del presidente Chávez en la siguiente fase. The U.S. has pledged the largest ever arms sale to Taiwan, worth $11.1 billion. This destabilizing and dangerous move represents an attempt to block the inevitable reunification between the People’s Republic of China with the province of Taiwan. Once again, the U.S. is willing to sink resources for wars across the globe while things at home continue to deteriorate.

Both sides of the Taiwan Strait want to maintain peace; the U.S. is dead set on disrupting that peace for its own aims.

The U.S. imperialists are stoking a separatist movement to try and make inroads against a peaceful, thriving socialist country. They invoke “Taiwanese sovereignty” to try and erase the sovereignty of the Chinese people as a whole.

The latest arm sale continues to breach the 1972 Shanghai Communique, where the U.S. itself agreed to the One China Policy.

More and more armaments pave the way for catastrophic conflicts, and Trump is beating war drums on the path of mutual destruction, or more likely, sure defeat. We condemn the arms sales and the aggression, and say no to a new Cold War with China.

The Freedom Road Socialist Organization vehemently condemns the Trump Administration’s illegal seizure of an oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela. Trump has violated yet another international law by having U.S. forces seize a defenseless commercial vessel. As nationalized oil, it belongs to the people of Venezuela. We denounce the U.S. imperialists’ use of violence to steal what they want. In this case, it looks like U.S. Coast Guard piracy.

To be certain, no matter what you read in the corporate press, this Venezuelan oil seized by Trump was bound for socialist Cuba. Venezuela views Cuba as its sister country in the struggle for independence and sovereignty. Venezuela’s leadership admires the Cuban Revolution, and Cuba provides medical professionals by the thousand to the health care system that covers all Venezuelans, not just the wealthy.

The Cubans, year after year, resist the ruthless U.S. embargo on their economy, overcoming hardships and deprivation with creativity and innovation. Venezuelan oil helps their economy tremendously, on an island with few energy resources. With U.S. war threats against Venezuela, the Cubans are on high alert.

U.S. decline and failures make it dangerous

The decline of U.S. imperialism continues at a more rapid pace. Trump recognizes this, and covers it over with his desperate cries of “America first!” Trump is more and more willing to flaunt international laws and lash out due to the shrinking U.S. advantage on a world scale.

Now after 25 years of U.S. coup attempts, sanctions, electoral interference, vote stealing, infrastructure destruction, and assassination plots in Venezuela, the U.S. is ramping up toward war. That would be bad for millions of Venezuelans, and a huge mistake for the U.S. ruling class. The U.S. certainly will not “win” and may even face a defeat worse than the one in Vietnam, or more recently Afghanistan.

Venezuela’s Bolivarian Revolution remains steadfast. In the face of U.S. attacks, the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) and President Maduro’s popularity grows stronger by the year. Trump is being forced to start a modern medieval siege because all the other dirty coup plots and vicious tricks have failed.

Almost 25% of U.S. naval forces with dozens of aircraft totaling over 15,000 military personnel are stationed near the country with the largest oil reserves in the world. The oil and mineral corporations on Wall Street are frothing at the potential bounty if they can take what is not theirs.

The lies spewed by Trump, Rubio, and Hegseth are wearing thin. Nearly 80% of people in the U.S. do not believe Trump’s lies about the U.S. Navy missile strikes on boats in the Caribbean. This latest seizure of oil is meant to make Trump and Hegseth look strong again, after failing to cow Venezuelan President Maduro.

This week saw other escalations in Trump and Hegseth’s aggression and war threats. On December 9, two F/A-18 Super Hornets flew deep into the Gulf of Venezuela, violating Venezuela’s airspace and sovereignty. The U.S. also sent EA-18G Growlers for electronic jamming and an MQ-4C surveillance drone.

Then on December 10, Trump bragged about the U.S. seizing the oil tanker. Next Trump announced new sanctions on members of the Maduro family and a Panamanian businessman whose tankers move Venezuelan oil. Trump also announced he is planning to seize more oil tankers. At the same time, Chevron oil tankers continue to come and go unmolested from Venezuela to the United States.

Maduro stands tall

Every day that Maduro stands stall is an embarrassment to Trump’s plans. Every day that the people of Venezuela remain free to decide their own affairs is another day that angry and bitter Miami reactionaries are harassing Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio to start a war.

It is more and more apparent as the corporate media and most Americans learn about this situation that Trump, Rubio and Hegseth are vicious, lawless and soulless. The White House is seething mad that socialist Cuba, independent and progressive Nicaragua, and Bolivarian Venezuela stand strong as leaders of the anti-imperialist movement.

Maduro and Venezuela remain unyielding to imperialist aggression

In Venezuela, on December 8, President Maduro committed to expanding democracy and popular power with a plan called “Communal Transition Government to Socialism.” This would engage the existing communal structures of popular power and community banks and seek to more than double their number across the country, especially into areas that have been without.

By doubling the number of armed Venezuelans in the popular militias and moving to broaden participation and political power in the hands of citizens, Maduro and the PSUV are advancing the revolution. They are meeting the goals of President Chavez into the next phase. The FRSO applauds this advancement of the Bolivarian Revolution as our friends and comrades in the anti-war movement around the country roar full-throated: “No U.S. war on Venezuela!”
