Hundreds gather to celebrate life of Gabriel Johnson-Ortiz

<![CDATA[Gabriel Johnson-Ortiz (right) with veteran Chicano leader Carlos Montes. with veteran Chicano leader Carlos Montes. \(Fight Back! News/Staff\)")

Minneapolis, MN - More than 200 people gathered January 30 to celebrate the life of Twin Cities activist Gabriel Johnson-Ortiz, who passed away Jan. 17 at age 34 after a four-and-a-half-year struggle with brain cancer. His passing is a great loss to his family, friends and comrades from a variety of progressive political and cultural movements.

!--more--

At the event, representatives of organizations in which Gabriel was active gave moving tributes, including William Martinez of the Minnesota Immigrant Rights Action Committee, Lucila Dominguez of Centro de Trabajadores Unidos en Lucha, Jess Sundin of the Anti-War Committee and Eric Angell of OccupyMN. Several musicians performed in Gabriel’s honor, including an Aztec danzante group and Maria Isa. David Mendez of the Palabristas and David Miller read poems written for Gabriel. Teresa Ortiz, Gabriel’s mother and also a member of the Palabristas, read a moving poem to close out the gathering.

A common theme touched on by all who spoke was that Gabriel was ever present in the movement for social justice. He seemed to be at every protest, event, meeting, party and concert. He transcended movements and issues and always greeted everyone with a smile and a hug. He seemed to know everyone, and those he didn’t know he quickly welcomed and befriended. Gabriel's tireless passion for social justice and solidarity never waned nor did his positive spirit, as he continued participating in political activities even while facing serious health issues.

Gabriel Johnson-Ortiz grew up partly in Minnesota and partly in Guatemala and in Chiapas, México. His family lived in Chiapas when he was a teenager during the mid-1990s. This was just after the Zapatistas had boldly announced themselves to the world by briefly seizing San Cristobal and several other major cities in Mexico’s southernmost state of Chiapas, rocking Mexico and inspiring people around the world. Gabriel embodied the Zapatistas’ rebellious spirit and desire to serve the people.

Gabriel was a fixture in the Twin Cities progressive political and cultural movements since he returned to Minnesota in the late 1990s. Among many other things, he was always involved in the immigrant rights movement and movements of Latino and immigrant workers, participating in the 2003 Immigrant Worker Freedom Ride, helping found MIRAC in 2006, and staying active in MIRAC and CTUL. He also worked for a period doing union organizing with hotel workers who were mostly immigrants.

Gabriel built solidarity with the people of Chiapas, with Latin America and with movements around the world. He regularly participated in anti-war protests in the Twin Cities and joined in for long road trips to national anti-war protests. He was a main Twin Cities organizer of the U.S. Social Forum. Gabriel stood with activists facing political repression, including Carlos Montes, the Anti-War 23 and others.

In addition to his political commitments, Gabriel also promoted Latin American music in the Twin Cities, contributing to local radio shows like KFAI's Corazon Latino, and frequently going to local music events. He also sometimes DJed, sharing his impressive music collection.

Though brought together by the tragedy of Gabriel Johnson-Ortiz's passing, the Jan. 30 event was more a celebration of Gabriel's life than a somber memorial. It brought together people from many political and cultural movements and organizations that don't often gather in the same room, but who came together to celebrate a friend and compañero who made a strong impression on all who met and worked with him.

Gabriel Johnson-Ortiz, ¡Presente!

#MinneapolisMN #Remembrances #MIRAc #MinnesotaImmigrantRightsActionCommittee #CenterForWorkersUnitedInStruggleCTUL #OccupyMN #GabrielJohnsonOrtiz #Zapatistas

div id="sharingbuttons.io"/div]]>

!--more--

Occupy Minneapolis occupies home facing foreclosure so bank doesn’t kick family out

<![CDATA[Rally at start of occupation of Bobby Hull's home, Dec. 6, 2011")

Minneapolis, MN - On Dec. 6, a national day of action for occupying foreclosed homes, more than 100 people rallied here in front of Bobby Hull’s house at 3712 Columbus Avenue. They announced the start of an occupation of his home to prevent US Bank from kicking Hull and his family out of their home.

!--more--

Bobby Hull, a working class Vietnam War veteran, has lived with his family in the South Minneapolis home since 1968. But now he’s in danger of losing the home, which would be taken by the bank. Although he’s lived there and made his mortgage payments for decades, due to health reasons he wasn’t able to keep up with the high payments more recently. Hull tried to negotiate a lower monthly payment with the bank, but they wouldn’t negotiate and moved forward with the attempt to take away his house. In South Minneapolis, where many working class Latino and African American families live, there are many families who have lost their homes due to foreclosure during the current economic crisis, which just further increases poverty and homelessness.

There’s a growing movement of tenants and homeowners who are saying “Enough is enough!” to the banks and refusing to leave their homes when the bank tries to foreclose on them. The Occupy Minneapolis movement is supporting Bobby Hull to try to prevent US Bank from kicking him out of his house. Occupy Minneapolis is part of the Occupy Wall Street movement that is occupying public spaces and some homes too.
Minneapolis, MN – On Dec. 6, a national day of action for occupying foreclosed homes, more than 100 people rallied here in front of Bobby Hull’s house at 3712 Columbus Avenue. They announced the start of an occupation of his home to prevent US Bank from kicking Hull and his family out of their home.

These occupations are a protest in favor of the 99% of the population and against the 1% of the richest people, the banks and the large corporations that control the economy and politics of the country for their own interests instead of in the interest of the vast majority.

Occupy Minneapolis’s central occupation continues downtown at The People’s Plaza outside of Hennepin County Government Center and City Hall, although Hennepin County officials continue trying to restrict the protesters’ ability to stay there. As of this writing the occupation of the downtown plaza continues. Occupy Minneapolis members are also continuing to occupy Monique White’s house in North Minneapolis.
<![CDATA[St. Paul, MN – The American Civil Liberties Union of Minnesota filed a lawsuit against Hennepin County, Nov. 22 on behalf of Occupy Minneapolis. The lawsuit argues that the county’s new restrictions on the OccupyMPLS unconstitutionally restrict the demonstrators’ free speech rights. OccupyMPLS has been continuously occupying the Hennepin County Government Center Plaza, since renamed People’s Plaza, since Oct. 7 to express their frustration with the growing economic and political inequities in this country.

!--more--

The complaint argues that the new “Procedures for Public Use of the Hennepin County Government Center” issued by Hennepin County and certain unwritten procedures enforced by the county violate the demonstrators’ First Amendment rights because:

The rules were expressly created in response to OccupyMPLS, which is a content-based limitation on speech.
The rules put forth impermissible time, place and manner restrictions.
The rules are unconstitutionally overbroad.
The rules are a result of arbitrary and unconstitutional decision-making.
The unwritten procedures were designed to suppress Plaintiff’s speech and are inconsistent with how the county has treated other groups.

The complaint, which provides details of the county’s restrictions, asks the court to declare that the “Procedures for Public Use of the Hennepin County Government Center” and certain unwritten procedures relating to chalk, electricity and use of structures are unconstitutional under the First Amendment to the United States Constitution.

“The rules put forth by Hennepin County are particularly troubling because they were created as a direct response to OccupyMPLS,” stated Justin Perl, partner at Maslon Edelman Borman & Brand. “They were not based on any previous ordinances. We are marching to demand that our leaders pass a jobs bill that will put people back to work repairing our infrastructure and providing vital public services, not kill even more jobs with devastating budget cuts,” said Tee McClenty, Executive Vice President of SEIU HealthCare Minnesota.

After the protest on the bridge, demonstrators marched to People’s Plaza, the home of Occupy Minnesota for another rally.

Kim Defranco of the Minnesota Coalition for a People’s Bailout told the crowd, “Make no mistake, the 1% wants us to go back to our foreclosed homes, unemployment lines, to our jobs and shut up! After the march they returned to the plaza and filled it with blankets and sleeping bags for a mass ‘sleep-in’ in defiance of Hennepin County’s new rules banning sleeping in the plaza. As of 10:00 p.m. the County authorities have not moved to clear the plaza.

!--more--

The new rules which go into effect today were passed at the County Commissioners’ meeting last Tuesday in response to OccupyMN’s occupation of Hennepin County Government Plaza since October 7, which the protesters renamed “People’s Plaza”.

The new restrictions include the ban on sleeping in the plaza, no hanging or posting of signs on the plaza, and no porta-potties on the plaza except at the discretion of the County Administrator.

<![CDATA[Minneapolis, MN - 150 people chanted “Banks got bailed out, we got sold out!” Nov. 8, at a rally to begin an occupation in support of North Minneapolis home owner, Monique White. White, who lives at 3310 N 6th St, is facing imminent eviction from her foreclosed home. The house and fence around it were hung with banners and signs saying, “Housing is a Human Right”, “25,673 Foreclosures in MN: US Bank Corp CEO Richard Davis 18.8 million dollar/yr salary”, “Foreclose Free Zone.” Six tents were set up in the yard for occupiers to spend the night.

!--more--

The occupation is organized and endorsed by members of SEIU and other sectors, including churches, community organizations and activists at OccupyMN.

Monique White has lived in her home and worked in the community for the last eight years. Helping her buy her home is the last thing her father did before he died. One year ago she was laid off from her job at a group home because it was de-funded by the state due to the budget crisis. Although she has a part time job, she fell behind in her house payments to US Bank Corp. They have been unwilling to work with her. According to the greedy bank’s last financial report, they made $1.2 billion. At the same time, 393 homes in Hennepin County went into foreclosure.

Mel Reeves reminded the crowd, “During the time I have been speaking, 7 more families in the U.S. went into foreclosure.

Nick Espinosa, an organizer of the occupation, said, “We are not leaving until they negotiate.”

Nick Muhamud, from the North Side said, “These are the moments the 1% dread - look around you - when the people of all races and ages come together to fight back.”

A small contingent will be on alert at the house 24/7 and when and if the sheriff comes an emergency call will go to come to White’s home to protect it.

The event ended with a spirited march through the neighborhood.

#MinneapolisMN #Foreclosures #HousingStruggles #OccupyWallStreet #OccupyMN

div id="sharingbuttons.io"/div]]>

OccupyMN threatened by county government, sheriff

<![CDATA[Fight Back News Service is circulating the following statement from the Twin Cities-based Anti-War Committee on the threat by county officials to shut down OccupyMN. On Nov. 8 the Hennepin County Board voted to place severe restrictions on the encampment at People's Plaza, which are slated to go into effect Nov. 14. In addition, Hennepin County Sheriff Rick Stanek has waged a media campaign aimed at discrediting the occupation.

!--more--

Stanek, a Republican, is well known for his racist views, which include using the n-word to refer to African Americans. He has also taken steps to draw the sheriff’s department into Homeland Security’s repressive ‘anti-terrorism’ programs.

We encourage all our readers to circulate the following statement:

Anti-War Committee Stands in Solidarity with Occupy Wall Street, Minneapolis

County / Sheriff Hands Off People’s Plaza!

Starting with New York City, and spreading to more than a thousand cities in the US and across the globe, the Occupy Wall Street movement has given voice to the majority of people, who are suffering from an ever-deepening economic crisis here at home, and endless war abroad. Minnesota has joined this movement in saying it’s time to put people over profits, and several occupations have started here, including one in downtown Minneapolis.

Since October 7, thousands of Minnesotans have occupied the People’s Plaza, outside the Hennepin County Government Center, maintaining a presence day and night to demonstrate against corporate greed and political corruption.

The Anti-War Committee has been a part of Occupy Minneapolis since the beginning, because we too are a part of the 99%. We understand that corporate control of resources in other countries is one of the driving reasons that the U.S. goes to war, and we will not pay with our tax dollars or our lives to further the profits of a few while so many suffer. At the occupation, we have rallied and marched, attended teach-ins, shared meals, participated in general assembly meetings and slept out on the plaza with no shelter.

County officials have restricted the rights of Occupy Minneapolis from the very first day. Claiming that it is for the safety of the protesters, we were denied the right to set up tents, or any kind of structure, to provide shelter from the cold and rain (even though many other occupations have tents). Yesterday, Hennepin County Commissioners voted for a plan to shut down the People’s Plaza on November 14th: All protest signs must be taken down and no one will be allowed to sleep at the Plaza.

Commissioners have cited the cold weather, but if they were concerned about the health and well being of the protesters they would lift the restrictions on shelter, not evict us. We know that this is an attempt to end the occupation they wish had never begun, and we condemn all threats to evict Occupy Minneapolis!

In the name of the 99%, we support the rights of the occupiers, and demand the right to continue a round-the-clock presence at the People’s Plaza. We call on all people of conscience to take concrete actions to defend Occupy Minneapolis. This includes contacting County Commissioners to demand they allow the occupation to continue without interruption. If the county moves to evict us from the People’s Plaza on Monday, November 14th, we call on all people of conscience to mobilize to the Plaza, and stand in solidarity with the 99%.

Please call the Hennepin County Commissioners and Sheriff Stanek. The Nov. 3 New York Times reported, "The company that recorded the biggest reduction in taxes was Wells Fargo Bank...The banking company reported a total of $49 billion in profits in 2008 through 2010, yet received a tax benefit of $651 million."

Several people inside Stumpf’s speech also disrupted his talk using a ‘mic check,’ where one person speaks then others repeat the words in a call and response so that everyone can hear it.

Police escorted the protesters out of the talk. When Stumpf left the building at the end of his speech to get into his limo, he was confronted by protesters yelling, “Hey John - when are you going to stop foreclosing on our families?”

“Many in our community and our country rightfully believe that Wells Fargo and the other powerful, dominant banks have done much harm to our economy and our future and the future of our children. We suffer under staggering debt while the real wages of working families have been stagnant for a generation,” said Carol Neiters, Executive Director of SEIU Local 284, the union that initiated the protest of Stumpf's speech.

Phyllis Walker, president of AFSCME Local 3800, the University of Minnesota clerical workers union, participated in the rally outside. She said, “When a CEO of a major bank that’s making over $17 million a year speaks on campus during an economic crisis, we have to let it be known that the lowest paid workers here are being attacked with wage freezes, layoffs and mounting debt. We’ve had enough of this inequality!”

Participants in the rally said that they and other community groups attempted to schedule a meeting with Wells Fargo executives but were rebuffed. They want to discuss proposals for the bank to adopt policies that lower interest rates on student loans, underwrite interest and fee-free K-12 public education borrowing, stop home foreclosures and renegotiate underwater mortgages.

Protest outside Wells Fargo CEO Jon Stumpf's speech at University of Minnesota")

Enter a descriptive sentence about the photo here.")

Protest outside Wells Fargo CEO Jon Stumpf's speech at University of Minnesota")

#MinneapolisMN #Labor #SEIU #WellsFargo #PeoplesStruggles #AFSCMELocal3800 #OccupyWallStreet #OccupyMN #JonStumpf #SEIULocal284

div id="sharingbuttons.io"/div]]>

<![CDATA[Protesters denounce new Hennepin County threats to end OccupyMN

OccupyMN, Vets for Peace, Iraq Vets Against War and others rally in Mpls")

Minneapolis, MN - More than 200 people gathered at People’s Plaza in Minneapolis, Nov. 2, to stand up for the right of assembly and to protest government repression of the Occupy movement around the country, particularly in Oakland, California. Speakers at the rally also denounced a new statement by Hennepin County threatening to end the OccupyMN occupation here in Minneapolis when the temperature hits 25 degrees or at the first snowfall.

!--more--

Several speakers at the rally expressed solidarity with Occupy Oakland, which called for a citywide general strike Nov 2. Oakland’s action is in response to severe repression last week, when the police forcibly evicted the Occupy Oakland protesters from a park. The Oakland police carried out mass arrests, used tear gas, concussion grenades and other projectiles against them, in the process hitting protester and Iraq War veteran Scott Olsen in the head, fracturing his skull. As he lay bleeding on the street and other protesters came to help him, police fired a concussion grenade to prevent them from helping evacuate him. In the aftermath, the Occupy Oakland General Assembly decided to call for a citywide General Strike.

Ray Camper of Iraq Veterans Against the War and Gerald of Veterans for Peace spoke at the rally, expressing solidarity with Scott Olsen as fellow veterans. Tracy Molm of the Committee to Stop FBI Repression spoke about the repression against the Occupy movement in the context of the broader repression faced by many people who try to exercise their rights to expression and protest.

Nick Espinosa of OccupyMN talked about the new threat from Hennepin County today against OccupyMN. He said, “We need to be clear - this is an eviction notice.” On Nov. 2, Hennepin County officials released a two-page statement ostensibly about winterizing the plaza, but in fact, it was about placing severe restrictions on the OccupyMN space starting Nov. 4., and ending the occupation when it snows or when the temperature hits 25 degrees. Hennepin County’s statement reads:

“As the temperatures fall and/or it begins to snow, it will become necessary that OccupyMN make further modifications to their occupation of Government Center plaza in order to ensure personal safety and allow for snow shoveling, snow plowing, snow removal and snow storage. Once the first significant snowfall or severe temperatures are predicted and the temperature falls below twenty-five degrees, no sleeping will be allowed on the Government Center plazas between 10:00 pm and 6:00 am. At that time, all portable toilets will need to be removed and the canopy will come down.”

In response Mel Reeves, an emcee of the protest, said, “The right of assembly doesn’t end when the temperature hits 25 degrees or at 10:00 at night.” Speakers at the rally decried the announcement from Hennepin County as an attempt to end the Minneapolis occupation. Occupations on the East Coast have continued this week despite a large snowstorm there, including the flagship occupation of Zuccotti Park at Occupy Wall Street.

After the Minneapolis rally at People’s Plaza, there was a spirited march through downtown Minneapolis in solidarity with Occupy Oakland.

The Occupy movement is focused against economic inequality, as the big banks and super-rich get richer while 99% of the people continue to suffer the effects of the capitalist economic crisis: unemployment, foreclosures, budget cuts and stifling amounts of debt.

#MinneapolisMN #IraqVeteransAgainstTheWar #VeteransForPeace #OccupyWallStreet #OccupyMN #OccupyOakland

div id="sharingbuttons.io"/div]]>

Occupy Minnesota: 7 arrests at U.S. Bank

<![CDATA[Police taking down tents at Occupy Minnesota bank protest")

Minneapolis, MN - Seven people were arrested as over 100 people from OccupyMN protested outside of U.S. Bank Plaza, Oct. 20. The seven arrested set up tents outside the bank and blocked traffic at a major downtown intersection. The protest highlighted the hypocrisy of big banks foreclosing people’s homes while U.S. Bank’s bosses’ pay doubled over the past year and the bank rakes in record profits.

!--more--

A statement from OccupyMN noted that by setting up tents outside of a major financial power, they hoped to call attention to the ongoing foreclosure crisis and support those who have lost their homes to the corrupt economic policies of the 1%.

U.S. Bank’s CEO Richard Davis saw his pay more than double - to $18.8 million this year according to BizJournals.com - as most Minnesotans struggle to make ends meet. There have been more than 25,000 home foreclosures in Minnesota in 2010 alone. Meanwhile the bankers responsible for the financial crisis have yet to be held accountable. U.S. Bancorp reported a record $1.273 billion in profit last quarter. Davis is also the ‘Immediate-Past Chairman’ of the Financial Services Roundtable, the leading federal lobbying organization for big banks and finance.

Protester Steve Fletcher said, “The banks use the sheriff's office to evict people from foreclosed homes. Our government has a choice to make about whether it’s going to represent us or whether it's going to represent the banks.”

“The corruption of Wall Street and the big banks is responsible for our country’s economic recession and the foreclosure crisis,” said Alexa Lindh of OccupyMN. “OccupyMN stands in solidarity with foreclosure victims. We want our houses back.”

Kim DeFranco, a participant in OccupyMN and the Minnesota Coalition for a People’s Bailout said, “We are here today to say the people need to be bailed out, not the banks or corporations. The banks should not be throwing people out of their homes during this economic crisis. We demand an end to all foreclosures now!”

OccupyMN, part of the growing Occupy Wall Street movement, has been occupying People’s Plaza, which is right next to U.S. Bank Plaza, since Oct. 7. U.S. Bank officials knew they’d be targeted for protests, so they set up barricades around their building’s plaza to keep protesters out. But that didn’t stop the demonstrators. They marched across the street from People’s Plaza to protest U.S. Bank.

The group marched around the U.S. Bank Plaza to spread their message. Many people honked and showed their support as they passed the protesters.

While the protest was going on outside the building, another group of protesters were doing an action inside the bank. They reportedly planned to set up a tent inside the U.S. Bank branch highlighting the people who have lost their homes due to foreclosures. When they were ejected from the building before getting their tents set up inside, they joined the demonstration outside. They then took over the intersection outside of U.S. Bank Plaza, setting up their tents in the street and bringing traffic to a standstill.

The clear plastic tents had "stop foreclosure now" painted on the side. People in the streets and inside the building could see the message clearly.

After blocking the intersection for a significant amount of time, the police arrested seven people and removed the tents. The group was successful in bringing media attention to the greedy bankers and corporations making a killing from all the homes they have foreclosed on, thrusting OccupyMN’s message of “people over profits” back to the center of attention of Minnesota's media.

OccupyMN will complete its second week of occupying People’s Plaza with a rally and concert at 5:00 p.m. on Oct. 21. At least two more protest actions targeting multinational banks are planned for the coming week, including a mass action of people closing their accounts at a major bank and a protest marking the anniversary of the ‘Black Tuesday’ stock market crash on Oct. 29, 1929 that began the Great Depression. Information will be available about these actions at OccupyMN.org.

Protesters in tents block intersection in front of U.S. Bank")

#MinneapolisMN #CapitalismAndEconomy #OccupyWallStreet #OccupyMN #USBank

div id="sharingbuttons.io"/div]]>

Minneapolis, MN – Seven people were arrested as over 100 people from OccupyMN protested outside of U.S.

A statement from OccupyMN noted that by setting up tents outside of a major financial power, they hoped to call attention to the ongoing foreclosure crisis and support those who have lost their homes to the corrupt economic policies of the 1%.

U.S. Bank’s CEO Richard Davis saw his pay more than double – to $18.8 million this year according to BizJournals.com – as most Minnesotans struggle to make ends meet.

The clear plastic tents had “stop foreclosure now” painted on the side.

<![CDATA[Hundreds march with Minnesota Peace Action Coalition.")

Minneapolis, MN – More than 500 people marched here, Oct. 15, to mark the tenth year of the U.S. war in Afghanistan with a call for an end to the occupation and for U.S. troops to be brought home now.

!--more--

The event was organized under the slogan of “Bring the Troops & War Dollars Home Now – Get Out of Afghanistan!” The Minnesota Peace Action Coalition (MPAC) initiated planning for the event.

Activists participating in OccupyMN in downtown Minneapolis issued a leaflet urging occupiers to join the Oct. 15 anti-war protest. The leaflet, headlined, "Hop on the Peace Train,” urged participants to gather and take the light rail train to join the rally and march. Around 100 people from the OccupyMN joined the anti-war protest.

After rallying near the busy intersection of Lake Street and Hiawatha Avenue, the crowd marched on Lake Street before turning to go to South High School for a closing rally in the auditorium.

A statement issued by MPAC says, in part, “We call for an end to the U.S. war in Afghanistan which has now been going on for ten years; the longest war in U.S. history. The conflict has taken the lives of thousands of Afghan civilians and over 1700 U.S. military personnel and has cost hundreds of billions in U.S. tax dollars. It is estimated that it costs $1 million a year to keep one U.S. soldier in Afghanistan.”

Anti-war actions had been planned in cities across the U.S. this weekend to mark the milestone anniversary and to call for an end to the war. The call for the Oct. 15 local anti-war actions was initiated by the United National Antiwar Committee and other organizations.

The MPAC statement goes on to say, “Polls show that most Afghans want the U.S. to leave - and most Americans agree. Billions of dollars go to the war in Afghanistan while millions of people in the U.S. are unemployed and losing their housing.”

A range of speakers addressed the anti-war protest, including Wayne Wittman, representing the Minnesota State AFL-CIO.

Meredith Aby, of the Anti-War Committee urged crowd to join the massive protests scheduled for the G8/NATO summit, stating "While President Bush started the war in Afghanistan, President Obama has escalated it. He has sent in more troops and has expanded the conflict to Pakistan. Both Bush and Obama have repeatedly used the cover of multi-lateralism and international support as justifications for the war. In reality though, NATO is used as a fig leaf. This is a U.S. led military intervention and occupation.”

Aby continued, “Normally Minnesotans have to drive 24 hours to get to D.C. to say no to the warmakers in person. However, this May we will only have to drive seven. NATO and the G8 are holding a joint summit which highlights that U.S. military policy is an extension of U.S. economic policy. We have the opportunity to go to Chicago to say no to the warmakers in person while they are in the Midwest and I hope you'll come with us to demand an end to the war on Afghanistan!"

Cherrene Horazuk, the chief steward of AFSCME Local 3800, one of the day’s many endorsing organizations, said, “It is always the sons and daughters of working people who are sent off to kill and be killed in wars that do not represent the interests of themselves or their families. These wars are not fought to stop terrorism, or for democracy but in the interests of the large corporations who rely on U.S. military power around the world to maintain their interests.”

Other groups supporting the Oct. 15 action included Veterans for Peace, Military Families Speak Out, Iraq Veterans Against the War, Women Against Military Madness, Anti-War Committee, Twin Cities Peace Campaign, Freedom Road Socialist Organization and many others.

#MinneapolisMN #AntiwarMovement #AfghanistanWar #MinnesotaPeaceActionCoalition #OccupyMN

div id="sharingbuttons.io"/div]]>
