Students say “U.S. out of Afghanistan”
Students from around the country protested the U.S. government’s plan for a 30,000 troop surge into Afghanistan in early December.
The Antiwar Working Group of Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) reported many campuses participated in public opposition to the surge and the war in Afghanistan, with over ten SDS chapters signed up to participate in actions.
Jacob Flom, an Air Force veteran and organizer with Milwaukee SDS, attended a demonstration in Milwaukee of over 100 people.
“I’m here to protest the announcement of a 30,000 troop surge,” Flom said. “President Obama is demonstrating an allegiance to the interests of the ruling class of this country and not the people who elected him to end the occupations.”
Minnesota SDS took part in an emergency demonstration of 100 people to demonstrate outrage over the surge.
“For two hours we stopped business as usual, chanting, ‘No surge, no more, we won’t take it anymore,’” said Minnesota SDS organizer Tracy Molm.
Other demonstrations of SDS members took place in New York, North Carolina, Chicago, Alabama and other places.
The Antiwar Working Group of SDS has already begun organizing protests for the anniversary of the Iraq invasion this March.
