Protests outside Trump fundraiser in Houston
Houston, TX – On June 17 over 200 activists and community leaders protested Donald Trump in River Oaks, a wealthy area. Trump was holding a campaign fundraiser at the home of the right-wing lawyer Tony Buzbee. Supporters who attended the fundraiser paid $5000 dollars to have their photo taken with Trump, and as much as $250,000 to spend an evening with the Republican nominee.
Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) caused a massive disturbance. SDS marched from the corner of San Felipe and Claremont to the house Tony Buzbee. As they marched through the area where Trump supporters had gathered, they chanted, “When racist Republicans come to town, what do we do? Stand up! Fight back!” SDS then led the march to join another anti-Trump protest organized by the Houston Socialist Movement.
Angelica Hernandez, a member of SDS, stated, “Trump and his right-wing rhetoric are not welcome here. We have come here today to demand equality and an end to the anti-immigrant rhetoric of Trump and the GOP.”
Ian Cox, a member of Freedom Road Socialist Organization gave a speech to the crowd, calling for “the overthrow of the capitalist system in order to end all forms of oppression that are directed against the working class and oppressed nationalities within the U.S.”
