Poor people to hold ‘Day of Reckoning’ protest on opening day of MN legislature
Minneapolis, MN – On Jan. 3, the opening day of Minnesota’s legislative session, the Welfare Rights Committee (WRC) will hold a ‘Day of Reckoning’ protest to demand that politicians end their war on the poor. After a short noon outdoor rally at the state capitol building, low-income people and their supporters will march in formation to every legislator’s office to send a message.
“We are sick our people being homeless and suffering, with next to nothing to live on. Lots of us in need can’t get any help at all. We are sick of government of the rich, by the rich and for the rich,” states Linden Gawboy of the WRC.
This legislative session, the Welfare Rights Committee will push for new state laws to ‘Give Aid to All in Need’ (GAAIN) and to double the welfare grants.
The Welfare Rights Committee also vows the fight any attacks by poor-bashing politicians. “We will stand up to fiercely to each and every attack that these right wing jerks try to throw at us. This is a time of reckoning,” states the WRC’s Darnella Wade.
