International Workers Day in Dallas
Dallas, TX – On April 29, an International Workers Day, or May Day, celebration took place at Lake Cliff Park in Dallas. 40 people attended, and organizations presented statements and greetings on the occasion of May Day.
Ebonee Taylor of National Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression-Dallas spoke on the importance of connecting the struggle of the working class with liberation struggles of the oppressed nationalities. “The working class is the most oppressed class in America, and there is more commonality in our struggles then there are differences,” she said.
A member of the Malaya Movement-Texas talked about the importance of the liberation struggle of the Philippines against U.S. imperialism as a struggle the working class of America can relate to, stating “The imperialists that exploit the Philippines are the same ones that exploit the working people of the U.S.”
A member of Young Active Labor Leaders talked about the conditions of the working class in America, stating, “UPS workers deserve a better contract.”
After the presentations, Jo Hargis of the Freedom Road Socialist Organization, led the people in the song Solidarity Forever.
Organizations participating included Freedom Road Socialist Organization, Malaya Movement-Texas, Dallas Committee for Human Rights in the Philippines, Communist Party of USA, Dallas Anti War Committee, National Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression-Dallas, Young Active Labor Leaders, Democratic Socialists of America, Party of Socialism and Liberation, Progressive Student Union at UTA, Texas Alliance for Retired Americans and the Students for Justice in Palestine.
Various groups were involved in art projects and made some banners and posters in solidarity with Alex Saab.
The event concluded with Cassandra Swart of the Dallas Anti War Committee delivering a statement on Alex Saab: “Since 2015 the U.S. has imposed harsh sanctions on Venezuela for social programs that primarily benefit the poor and working class and for nationalizing the countries petroleum. Alex Saab, a Columbian businessman, tried to help bring the Venezuelan people necessary food and medical supplies. He was kidnapped and brought to Miami and is being held their illegally while his health is on a decline. We demand free Alex Saab.”
