Talking socialism In Jacksonville, FL
Jacksonville, FL – A dozen community organizers gathered on Nov. 14 to discuss political theory. The event was organized by members of the Freedom Road Socialist Organization (FRSO) at a local union hall owned by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM).
The topic of the event was “Socialism: Workers in Power.” The discussion began with a talk by Dave Schneider about the nature of capitalism and how only socialism can solve the problems of capitalism. The second half of the discussion went through a number of discussion questions based on the presentation. Audience members then presented their own views on capitalism and socialism, and many participants agreed with each other: Capitalism is a broken system and has got to go.
After the event, Richard Blake commented: “With so much activism going on in Jacksonville and around the nation, it is important to take time to discuss theory and its relationship to our everyday organizing battles. Whether an activist is trying to stop police crimes, organize on a college campus, or fight management's greedy actions on the shop floor, organizers need to understand Marxism and its helpful analysis of the world we fight to change.”
