Father’s Day immigrant rights protest in Minneapolis denounces family separation
Minneapolis, MN – Immigrant rights protesters gathered at East Phillips Park on Father’s Day, June 18, to speak out against the separation of immigrant families and for legalization for all. This action was part of a national call to action from the Legalization for All Network in response to extreme anti-immigrant laws passed in Florida and several other Republican-controlled states, as well as increased militarization of the U.S.-México border.
Members and supporters of the Minnesota Immigrant Rights Action Committee (MIRAC) gathered on the corner of Cedar Avenue and 24th Street, holding a banner that read “Legalization for all” as well as signs denouncing laws that separate immigrant families. They chanted while many cars honked in support.
Then the protesters marched to the nearby Roof Depot building to meet up with the Climate Justice Committee for a victory march celebrating the East Phillips community’s victory in stopping the demolition of the Roof Depot site and winning control over the site for their Urban Farm and other community uses. During the march, chants alternated between focusing on indigenous and environmental struggles, and the immigrant rights struggle.
The East Phillips neighborhood is home to both large native and immigrant communities. The march ended at Cedar Field Park for an all-day celebration of the Roof Depot community victory.
