Protest in Ukraine against repression of international solidarity activists
Kiev, Ukraine – 35 protesters gathered at the U.S. Embassy here, Jan. 25, to oppose the repression against anti-war and international solidarity activists in the United States. The demonstration coincided with the day that nine Palestine solidarity activists were called to appear in front of the Grand Jury in Chicago, Illinois.
Since Sept. 24, 2010, anti-war and international solidarity activist have faced FBI raids and grand jury subpoenas. Grand juries are secret proceedings where those called are not accompanied by legal counsel and can be jailed for not answering questions. Many refer to grand jury proceedings as ‘witch hunts,’ since they are designed to force people to testify against themselves and others.
A total of 23 anti-war, labor and international solidarity activists have been called to appear in front of the grand jury. None of them intend to go along with the proceedings.
