Oshkosh, WI SDS holds protest against campus racism
Oshkosh, WI – University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) braved the rain and the cold outside of Polk Library, Nov. 17, to put on a demonstration against racism. This was the first event for the new SDS chapter at UWO.
“Helping to build SDS has really made me feel like I'm making a difference,” one founding member, Landon Klein, said. “I'm proud of the steps we've taken and the progress we've made since we started. Spreading information and getting students involved is really empowering and makes me confident that we can bring real positive change to campus.”
SDS members held signs that read “No safe space for racists on our campus,” and “Make your voice heard! Speak out against racism!” while some had conversations with students as they walked through the plaza during their passing periods. The goal of the event was to spread awareness about racism on campus and the lackluster response from administration to recent incidents of harassment and threatening behavior in the dorms.
One student, John Breaux, stopped by to participate after seeing flyers for the event.
“You can't walk around this campus without seeing SDS,” he said.
