Twin Cities protest demands: ‘No U.S. war in Syria – war is not the answer’
St Paul, MN – More than 50 people gathered at the Wednesday Peace Vigil on the Lake Street/Marshall Avenue bridge, July 17, under the call “No U.S. war in Syria – war is not the answer.”
A statement issued by organizers says in part, “Despite the majority of people in the U.S. being against new wars and interventions, the talk of U.S. military involvement in yet another war is growing, this time in Syria. U.S. military intervention in Syria can only lead to a greater civilian death toll, more refugees and further destabilization in the region. U.S. military intervention will not lead to peace, justice or democracy for the Syrian people.
“The organizers of the Wednesday Peace Vigil on the Lake Street/Marshall Avenue Bridge urge all opposed to a new U.S. war to join the vigil Wednesday, July 17, to speak out against war. Come to the vigil to say, ‘People need housing, jobs and education, not a new war,’” the statement concludes.
The July 17 vigil was held in coordination with a national call for actions June 28 – July 17 to speak out against U.S. war in Syria. Among the national organizations endorsing the call are: ANSWER Coalition, United or Peace and Justice, United National Antiwar Coalition, Veterans for Peace, Arab Americans for Peace, Freedom Road Socialist Organization, World Can't Wait and many others.
The weekly vigil is sponsored by the Women Against Military Madness End War Committee and the Twin Cities Peace Campaign.
The call for the July 17 vigil to speak out against a U.S. war in Syria was endorsed by the Anti-War Committee, Minnesota Peace Action Coalition, Veterans for Peace and others.
