Quintonio LeGrier killed by Chicago cops, remembered at community vigil
Chicago, IL – A silent crowd of nearly 200 gathered across the street from Gwendolyn Brooks Academy in Chicago’s Roseland neighborhood tonight, Dec 29, to remember Quintonio LeGrier, killed by the cops the morning after Christmas.
LeGrier graduated there in 2013. His classmates and friends remembered him as a bright student, an athlete, and full of humor. They told funny stories, and wept, over his murder.
The vigil was organized by members of the Black Youth Project 100. Cosette Hampton of the Black Youth Project hosted the event. Her family is from the Roseland area.
The weather was below freezing, the park was covered in frozen slush and there was a stiff wind blowing. But people stayed for almost two hours and vowed to remember the memory of the latest victim of the murder spree of Chicago’s killer cops.
The crowd included Mike Siviwe Elliot, of the Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression, who was released from jail hours earlier after being arrested for challenging a cop who was abusing a Black woman on a Metra train.
