People’s movement forces cancelation of Trump speech at a Harley-Davidson factory
The White House announced today, Jan. 31, that it would be canceling Trump's speaking event in the Milwaukee area on Thursday, Feb. 2. The news came after there was massive outcry against the decision, with the Milwaukee Coalition Against Trump (MCAT) spearheading the resistance.
On Monday, it was revealed that Trump’s speech would happen at a Harley-Davidson factory in a suburb of the city. He would be making a major address concerning his administration’s economic plan.
MCAT moved quickly when the news came. A Facebook event was made that quickly blew up to over a thousand attendees. Calls were made to the member organizations of MCAT and other allies to attend, plan a march route and have a set of speakers. MCAT also put out a public announcement to call the CEO of Harley and their public relations office demanding that they cancel the event, and letting them know of the planned demonstration outside the plant gates.
On Tuesday, Harley Davidson announced that it would no longer be hosting Trump. According to CNN, a White House official said that “the company decided it wasn’t comfortable hosting him amid planned protests.” White House staff were already in the city, planning the trip, when the company made their announcement. Within hours, the White House confirmed that Trump is no longer planning on traveling to Milwaukee.
“Today, Milwaukee let the world know that Trump is not welcome here,” stated MCAT in a press statement today. “Trump’s unpopular policies have ignited an unprecedented resistance movement that will block his every move. We hope our success in Milwaukee sets the tone for the rest of Trump’s presidency. Wherever he goes, there will be resistance!”
