Milwaukee immigrants and workers march celebrates May Day
Milwaukee, WI – Over 10,000 marched here, April 29, to celebrate International Workers Day.
Since 2006, the event has been organized by Vosces de la Frontera as a demonstration for immigrant rights. The march was four miles, beginning in Milwaukee's predominantly Latino Southside, then going through the downtown area and ending by the lakefront with speakers and music.
Students, teachers and other workers also came out in support, along with a statewide contingent called by Occupy Milwaukee. “We stand in solidarity with the immigrant rights struggle here in Milwaukee and across the United States,” said Danielle Meyer of Occupy Milwaukee.
Marchers chanted, “Education not deportation!” “Obama, escucha, estamos en la lucha!” and “Recall Walker!” President Obama has deported more Latinos from the United States than any other U.S. president.
The rally in Milwaukee continues to be one of the largest in support of immigrant and workers rights in the U.S.
