LA teachers blast LAUSD plan to hire scabs
Los Angeles, CA – The union made up of LA educators, United Teachers of LA (UTLA), is blasting plans by the LA Unified School District (LAUSD) to hire temporary replacement teachers in the event of a strike.
According to a statement from the UTLA, “United Teachers Los Angeles proudly represents more than 2000 substitutes in our bargaining unit, and we are fighting for improvements for them and all of our members. More than 34,000 experienced educators are prepared to go on strike if we have to, including our substitute members. It is outrageously irresponsible for Supt. Austin Beutner to force this strike when the district holds $1.9 billion in reserves and it is even more irresponsible to think that 400 substitutes can educate more than 600,000 students. We believe that it is illegal for the district to hire people outside our bargaining unit to teach in LAUSD classrooms.”
Chicano community leader Carlos Montes calls on all in the community and Chicano movement to join the picket lines to support UTLA teachers strike on January 10 at your local school.
