Kerry signals U.S. is preparing military strikes on Syria
Washington, DC – Secretary of State John Kerry gave a speech on Aug. 26 that gives strong indications that the U.S. is preparing military attacks on Syria. Kerry stated that the government of Syria should be held responsible for the alleged use of chemical weapons near Damascus last week. The government of Syria is working with UN inspectors to determine what happened in the outskirts of Damascus.
Kerry offered no proof of his charges. Instead he offered a circumstantial case, saying, “We know that the Syrian regime maintains custody of these chemical weapons. We know that the Syrian regime has the capacity to do this with rockets. We know that the regime has been determined to clear the opposition from those very places where the attacks took place.”
There are many reports of past uses of chemical weapons by Western backed terrorists in Syria. The alleged chemical weapon attack that Kerry refers to coincided with the arrival of UN investigators who are looking into these past incidents and whose visit is being facilitated by the Syrian government.
Last week’s alleged chemical attack took place in an area where intense fighting was taking place. The Syrian government has labeled the charges that it would use chemical weapons in close proximity to its own troops as “bizarre.”
In his speech, Kerry advanced the odd idea that once the attack was alleged, the Syrian government should have stopped the battle with the foreign-backed forces outside Damascus. When the Syrian government was able to create the opportunity for the UN inspectors to visit the area in question, Kerry stated, “it’s too late to be credible.”
In recent months the U.S.-backed ‘rebels’ have met with repeated defeats.
Kerry’s speech was similar in tone and content to the speeches used by Bush in the run-up to the war on Iraq.
