Get Ready to Protest the Verdict – Demand Justice for Trayvon Martin
Fight Back! is calling for protests in the wake of the verdict of the George Zimmerman trial. The trial of George Zimmerman is now concluded and the jury is deliberating. Across the United States, people are awaiting the verdict on this racist killer who stalked and shot dead 17 year old African-American student Trayvon Martin in February 2012. Odds are there is not going to be any justice for Trayvon Martin in the courtroom. The vigilante murder of an African-American will likely not result in a guilty verdict on a murder charge. Fight Back! is calling on people to protest the verdict!
It seems that George Zimmerman, son of a magistrate, friend of the police, is not going to be found guilty of second-degree murder and sent to prison. The possibility does exist that he will be found guilty of manslaughter, as if Zimmerman who stalked and killed Martin accidentally shot him. Some predict the racist vigilante Zimmerman will be found not guilty and walk free. The lesson of the Zimmerman trial could not be starker. In the US, no Black man can get justice inside a courtroom. During the trial, Zimmerman was given a jury that has no African Americans and witnesses for the prosecution were treated as hostile, with obvious racial undertones by the Zimmerman defense. However, the racist killer of an African-American youth is treated with every kindness, while every possibility and excuse is considered.
Not This Time!
We know there would not even be a trial if not for the mass movement that rose up around the call of the parents of Trayvon Martin to demand justice. The police did not arrest the vigilante Zimmerman, he was questioned and then went home. No government officials, not the police chief, nor the politicians, nor the courts thought to hold Zimmerman accountable. They tried to file it away. Trayvon’s parents and African-American leaders and activists across the country would not allow it though. Not this time.
No Justice, No Peace!
Last year, after the murder of Trayvon Martin, the African-American freedom movement and its allies held protests in most cities, big and small, uniting to demand 'Justice for Trayvon'. This advanced the movement against racist murders and police misconduct. Now we need to follow through and let the rich and their politicians know that we are not going to take it anymore. We ask that leaders get organized now, before the verdict is handed down. Let the politicians, the courts, and the police know that enough is enough! No justice, no peace!
