New Yorkers launch monthly picket at precinct where cops that murdered Eudes Pierre are based

<![CDATA[

Brooklyn, NY - Dozens of community members gathered for a picket at the NYPD’s 71st Precinct in Brooklyn on March 31. In December 2021, 26-year-old Haitian American Eudes Pierre dialed 911 while experiencing a mental health crisis. Instead of assistance or care, officers Peter Lan and Conrado Abreu-Gerez from the 71st Precinct followed him in and out of a train station and to his home before shooting him ten times.

!--more--

The murder of Eudes Pierre demonstrates how the NYPD continues to kill and brutalize the people of New York with near-impunity. Their violence falls disproportionately on Black, brown, immigrant and unhoused New Yorkers, as well as those experiencing mental health crises.

Abreu-Gerez continues to work at the 71st Precinct. The New York Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression (NYAARPR), along with Eudes Pierre’s family, organized the picket to confront Abreu-Gerez along with his associates and demand that he be immediately fired and prosecuted.

Daniel Koh of the New York Alliance described Abreu-Gerez’s history of violence before and after the murder of Eudes Pierre. Around eight months earlier, he was part of a mob of police officers who brutalized Isiah Day, fracturing his spine. Since the murder of Eudes Pierre, the NYPD awarded Abreu-Gerez five times for “excellent police duty” and once for “meritorious police duty.” Over the same period, he has had five additional complaints ranging from police brutality to abuse of authority.

The Civilian Complaint Review Board (CCRB) ruled that Lan and Abreu-Gerez had acted “within NYPD guidelines.” Attorney General Letitia James declined to pursue charges against them. James is running this year for reelection to a third term. Her website calls her “the People’s Lawyer” and the “guardian of the legal rights of the people of New York.”

In their speech, NYAARPR Chair Shivani Ishwar addressed James directly, “You cannot be the People’s Lawyer if you don’t truly represent the people! You cannot win our vote while ignoring our demands!”

Attendees carried signs with a picture of Eudes Pierre on one side and a wanted poster of Conrado Abreu-Gerez on the other. Officers from the 71st Precinct watched the picket from the other side of their barricade, showing visible discomfort at the signs, speeches and chants which included “Fire killer cops!” and “How do you spell murderer? NYPD!”

To maintain and build pressure on the NYPD, the New York Alliance will continue to picket the 71st Precinct on the last Thursday of each month. The next picket will be at 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 30. Along with Eudes Pierre’s family, the New York Alliance continues to fight for justice for Eudes Pierre and for community control of the police.

#NewYorkNY #NY #BrooklynNY #NYAARPR #EudesPierre #OppressedNationalities #InjusticeSystem #KillerCop

div id="sharingbuttons.io"/div]]>

<![CDATA[

Brooklyn, NY - Organizers from the New York Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression held a speakout in Sunset Park on Saturday, March 14, just blocks away from the Metropolitan Detention Center, where up to 200 immigrants are being held by federal agents. The event was part of the group’s recently-launched “ICE Out” campaign, continuing the momentum established at mass rallies earlier in the year.

!--more--

The speak-out began on the corner of 36th Street and 4th Avenue, where members of the New York Alliance handed out hundreds of flyers, delivered fiery speeches, and spoke to passersby about the campaign to kick ICE and federal agents out of the five boroughs.

A nearby subway station meant there was a steady stream of residents and families to engage with, the vast majority of whom reacted positively to the campaign. Some chose to stay and help hand out flyers, while others gathered on the sidewalk to take up chants and listen to speeches about the deplorable conditions at the MDC, the relationship between immigration enforcement and imperialism, and federal police oppression.

For many passing by it was their first time learning about the federal detention complex.

“I lived here for years at this point, I had no idea that prison was right here in my backyard,” Raqael Vasquez, a resident of Sunset Park, told one organizer. “That’s actually crazy. Seriously.”

After spending some time by the subway station, organizers moved to Industry City, a shopping complex on the same avenue as the MDC. Though the crowd here was composed mostly of young professionals and tourists as opposed to residents of Sunset Park, many onlookers took flyers and raised fists in solidarity. Drivers passing from the Gowanus Expressway underpass likewise honked in unity with the organizers’ message, which was audible from two blocks away.

Though the MDC is situated in an inaccessible and industrial corner of Brooklyn, the speakout drew attendees from all over the city, some of whom had learned of the New York Alliance from previous ICE Out campaign events. People from as far away as Staten Island and Bay Ridge gave up their Saturday afternoons to take part in the speakout, indicating the popularity of the campaign, and the frustration from New Yorkers that such a place is, indeed, operating in their backyard.

#BrooklynNY #NY #InJusticeSystem #NAARPR #NYAARPR #Prison

div id="sharingbuttons.io"/div]]>

<![CDATA[Brooklyn event demands justice for justice for Eudes Pierre.

Brooklyn, NY — On Saturday, February 28, 30 community members gathered at the Brooklyn Public Library’s Macon branch to attend a justice for Eudes Pierre panel, organized by the New York Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression (NYAARPR).

!--more--

Eudes Pierre, a young Haitian American man, was 26 years old when he was murdered by the NYPD in December of 2021. Pierre had called 911 himself while experiencing a mental health crisis, and the officers who responded to his call met him not with compassion but with violence. Despite understanding that Pierre was in distress, the officers harassed him, escalated the situation, and ultimately shot him ten times.

Over four years after Pierre’s death, his family continues to fight for justice, working closely with the New York Alliance. The panel focused on what justice can look like years after a loved one’s death at the hands of police, and how to change a system that continues to treat Black and brown lives as disposable, while allowing cops to get away with murder.

On the panel of speakers were Sheina Banatte, Eudes Pierre’s cousin and the managing director of advocacy of the Justice for Eudes Pierre Coalition; Joshua Lopez, the nephew of John Collado, a man who was killed by an undercover NYPD officer in 2011; and Sharif Hall, organizer and treasurer of the New York Alliance. The conversation was moderated by Shivani Ishwar, the chair of NYAARPR.

The panel opened by discussing the cases of Eudes Pierre and John Collado, and the ways in which the current system failed to deliver justice for them and their loved ones, or consequences for the officers responsible for the murders.

“We had to fight to change the narrative around Eudes’ death,” said Banatte, speaking about her cousin’s case. “The media was calling it a ‘suicide by cop.’” She went on to discuss how Pierre didn’t deserve to be dehumanized just because he was in distress. His death was not a suicide, but a murder at the hands of the NYPD.

The speakers then discussed the demands for justice, and how the fight continues years after a loved one’s death. NYAARPR’s Justice for Eudes Pierre campaign demands that the officers who killed Pierre be fired and prosecuted for murder; that police are removed from mental health crisis response; and that a system of community control over the police be implemented citywide.

Speaking on the importance of community control of the police, Hall said, “In the 60s, the Black Panther party advocated for community control. The Black liberation struggle at that time called for a lot of ways to give Black people control over different aspects of their lives.”

The panel closed on a call to action, reminding attendees to go beyond education to join the fight for justice. “Learning about these cases is just the first step,” Ishwar said. “We need to fight for our demands, and change the system that allows \[the NYPD\] to get away with murder.”

NYAARPR will be holding a Justice for Eudes Pierre protest outside of the NYPD’s 71st Precinct, the precinct responsible for killing Pierre.
New Yorkers protest, occupy a Hilton Hotel to demand ICE and feds out

<![CDATA[

New York, NY — Over 1000 New Yorkers took the streets on January 27 after the execution of Alex Pretti by Border Patrol in Minneapolis a few days before. Since Pretti’s murder, hundreds of thousands of people around the country have mobilized despite a winter storm to defend their neighbors and fight back against racist attacks by federal agents.

!--more--

Organizers from New York Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression (NYAARPR) began with a rally at the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) field office in Lower Manhattan.

NYAARPR Chair Shivani Ishwar reminded the crowd to “not forget the other lives that have been cruelly extinguished by ICE.” Last year, the Border Patrol killed at least 17 people. ICE killed at least 33 people last year and nine people this year already. Border patrol shot another person in Arizona on the morning of the action.

Pretti’s was the second January murder in Minneapolis. The New York Alliance had organized a protest on January 8 after the brutal murder of Renee Good. In both actions, the New York Alliance demanded the immediate removal of all federal agents from New York City.

Daniel Koh, another NYAARPR speaker, contextualized resistance to ICE in the wider struggle for liberation.

He said, “This fight is bigger than just New York. It’s bigger than ICE, it’s bigger than Trump. It’s the whole rotten system. And it won’t go down without a fight, but that’s why we’re here!” Attacks on immigrants reflect the United States’s oppression at home and warmongering abroad.

The fare increases come despite overwhelming opposition from transit riders. They were proposed amid a sharp increase in police and National Guard in the transit system, instituted by Governor Kathy Hochul and New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

MTA CEO Janno Lieber has also been pushing for aggressive fare evasion crackdown, spending millions of dollars on turnstile spikes, private security, and locking emergency exit doors which pose a significant risk in case of fire.
<![CDATA[NYC protest against transit fare increases.

Brooklyn, NY - Dozens gathered on Tuesday, September 30 at the New York City Transit Authority to speak and give public comment at a monthly meeting of the MTA board. The event was organized by the New York Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression, as well as other members of the Fare Ain’t Fair Coalition, including the December 12th Movement.

!--more--

The Fare Ain’t Fair Coalition has been organizing to stop the train and bus fare increase to $3 and expand the Fair Fares program to include those up to 400% of the federal poverty line. Because of their campaign, the MTA delayed the fare increase to January 2026 and set up public hearings. There were four times as many public comments in July as there were during the last fare increase in 2023. Public pressure forced them to walk back other proposals over the weekend, including an increase in the seven-day fare cap, which will now be $1 instead of $2.

The December 12th Movement led a rally and speakout before the public comment period, chanting, “The fare ain’t fair and the poor won’t pay more!” There were 47 community members who signed up for public comment, necessitating an overflow room and recording for those who did not get a chance to speak in person.

The majority of the speakers condemned the fare increase. December 12th Movement member Christian Joseph said, “There's the working and poor people of this city, and there's those with the deep pockets. Who are you going to serve? Because this city runs off of the labor, the efforts, the sweat, and the blood of poor and working people. The fare ain't fair.”

New York Alliance speakers connected the Fare Ain’t Fair campaign to its Cops Off the Subways campaign, specifically their demand to “fund communities, not the cops.” NYAARPR member Jamie Kowalski said, “Meeting the needs of the community is the way we actually reduce crime. And instead of enforcing fares with violence and penalties, we need to stop the fare increases and eventually make the trains a free public service for all riders.”

After the board meeting, the New York Alliance led another speakout in front of the NYCTA building. Speakers reemphasized the connection between the fare increase and the ongoing, inevitable increase in policing to enforce it. They presented community control as a way to take back power over how tax money gets spent. Through community control, people would be able to decide the hiring, firing, discipline, wages and priorities of the police. They would be able to redirect money out of the pockets of billionaires and towards making transit truly affordable and accessible.

The New York Alliance, December 12th Movement. and the Fare Ain’t Fair coalition will continue to organize for safer subways and against the fare increase.

#BrooklynNY #NY #PeoplesStruggles #Transit #NYAARPR

div id="sharingbuttons.io"/div]]>

They presented community control as a way to take back power over how tax money gets spent. Through community control, people would be able to decide the hiring, firing, discipline, wages and priorities of the police. They would be able to redirect money out of the pockets of billionaires and towards making transit truly affordable and accessible.

The New York Alliance, December 12th Movement. and the Fare Ain’t Fair coalition will continue to organize for safer subways and against the fare increase.

New Yorkers protest against transit fare increase

<![CDATA[NYC rally against transit fare increase.

New York, NY - On Sunday, September 21, around 50 people rallied near Prospect Park in Brooklyn to demand a stop to all fare increases and the expansion of the "fair fares" discounted fare program. The MTA board is scheduled to vote on a fare increase at their monthly board meeting on September 30.

!--more--

The rally was organized by the Fare Ain't Fair coalition, spearheaded by the December 12th Movement (D12), a Pan-African human rights organization based in New York City. The campaign was launched earlier this year to halt the MTA's proposed fare hike and won a deferral of the planned hike until January 1 of next year.

Speakers called out the absurdity of raising the cost of transit on poor and working-class New Yorkers during an affordability crisis. One in five New Yorkers are already unable to afford the current fare of $5.80 round-trip. Transit is a daily necessity for people getting to work.

Despite the MTA spending a billion a year to combat fare evasion, fare evasion will simply increase with increasing fares. The solution, speakers said, is to make the subway affordable, first by canceling all future fare hikes and expanding the discounted fare program, and eventually by taxing the Wall Street and the wealthy and making transit free.

Briony Smith, an organizer with the New York Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression (NYAARPR), a participating organization with the Fare Ain’t Fair coalition, said, “The MTA’s proposed fare hike is an attack on poor and working-class New Yorkers, who are already struggling to get by. At the same time, the NYPD and MTA PD presence throughout the transit continues to increase. We saw where this leads, when the NYPD shot Derrell Mickles and several bystanders last year after Derrell Mickels allegedly evaded the fare. It is just a matter of time before this violence repeats itself. That is why NYAARPR has not only joined the Fare Ain’t Fair Coalition, but also leads the campaign for Cops Off the Subway.”

Protesters then marched to the house of Janno Lieber, CEO of NYC's Metropolitan Transit Association (MTA), where the crowd chanted “The fare ain’t fair! The poor won’t pay more!” and “Janno Leiber wants to raise the fare! Get the hell out of here!” Even Lieber’s own neighbors expressed their support for the protesters.

On September 30, NYAARPR will be stacking public comment at the MTA board meeting to demand money be redirected from adding cops to the train and instead put towards initiatives that will actually benefit the community, including reducing or eliminating the fare.

#NewYorkNY #NY #PeoplesStruggles #PublicTransit #NYAARPR

div id="sharingbuttons.io"/div]]>

Brooklyn town hall on police terror in the subway system

<![CDATA[A room full of people watches as someone gives a Powerpoint presentation on community control and the NYC transit system.

Brooklyn, NY - On September 6, The New York Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression (NYAARPR) hosted a town hall in Crown Heights to discuss community experiences with the NYPD and ways to fight back against police terror on the subway system. The town hall was held at Another World community center, which emerged from mutual aid efforts started as the Crown Heights CARE Collective in 2022.

!--more--

The event included a presentation of NYAARPR’s long-term demand for community control over the NYPD, and the immediate demands of getting police off of the subway system and holding the cops who brutally murdered Eudes Pierre accountable.

Since October 2023, the New York City transportation system has been flooded with cops, under the pretext that they are there to prevent violent crimes. In fact, the drastic police presence has had the exact opposite effect. As Shivani Ishwar stated on behalf of NYAARPR, “We believe that the people deserve safe subways and safe public transit—people deserve to feel safe on their commutes, and the cops don’t achieve that. The cops make the subways less safe.”

NYAARPR and community members highlighted many examples of increased violence from police on the subways. Two especially sharp examples of how cops make the transit system less safe come from the past year. In October of last year, NYPD officer shot three riders - hitting Gregory Delpeche in the head and causing a traumatic brain injury - after a young man entered the subway without paying the fare. In December, the NYPD stood by and watched as Debrina Kawam was burned alive on the subway. Video footage shows uniformed officers literally walking past Kawam as she was burning to death - throwing their hands up and walking off, leaving her to die.

Community members also shared many experiences of cops profiling them on the public transit system, “pulling people for hopping turnstiles is really just their way of rounding up people who , fit a profile that they think means someone is a criminal, and its racially biased,” said one attendee. Indeed, of all of the stops made by cops on subways, the vast majority—up to 80% of stops from 2014 to 2018—are of Black or Latino people.

The discussion also emphasized the disparity of funding and resources, where the NYPD is given billions of dollars while at the same time, community programs and services such as libraries and childhood education, are having their budgets slashed.

The 2023 NYPD budget, for example, includes $150 million for cops on the subway to catch fare beaters. At the same time, fare beating is only estimated to cost the MTA $104,000 a year—that means the city is spending 1500 times more money on policing transit riders than the money the MTA is actually losing from fare evasion. In 2024, the NYPD spent $1.1 billion on overtime pay for cops, many of whom were charged with policing the subway. In January 2025, Kathy Hochul ordered a cop on every overnight train, which would cost an estimated $160 million in overtime, half of which is paid directly by NYC taxes.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch comes from the 43rd wealthiest family in the entire country. As NYAARPR member Cicely Robinson pointed out, “This shows who the police really answer to. It’s not the people, it’s the billionaires.”

In 2024, the city government ran a pilot program of free buses, and the bus lines that had their fares waived for the year had an additional 15-20% decrease in violent assaults on bus riders. This shows that the way to actually reduce violent crimes on the transit system is to remove the cost of access, and to fight back against poverty and inequitable resource distribution in the city.

The New York Alliance’s overarching goal is to put an end to this police terror and this waste of community resources and taxes by taking power directly from the NYPD, and resituating it in the community. NYAARPR is demanding an all-civilian board, with zero connection to the NYPD, with full control over every single aspect of policing—from the budget, to the weapons they carry, all the way to the power to fire and punish officers.

NYAARPR’s counterpart in Chicago, the Chicago Alliance, passed the Empowering Communities for Public Safety Ordinance in 2021, which created district councils and a community commission on public safety and accountability—which is an essential step towards complete community control over police forces in this country. “We know that complete control over the NYPD is possible, and our organization is fighting to make it a reality” said NYAARPR member Daniel Koh.

NYAARPR calls on supporters and community members to join for a public comment at the next board meeting of the MTA, at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, September 30 at 2 Broadway, on the 20th floor, in Manhattan. Attendees will be sharing their experiences with police violence on the subway and demanding better from the MTA board.

Interested people can also get in touch with NYAARPR on Instagram (@nyaarpr) or on the organization’s website (https://nyaarpr.org).

#NewYorkNY #NY #InJusticeSystem #KillerCops #PoliceCrimes #Gregory Delpeche #DebrinaKawam #NYAARPR

div id="sharingbuttons.io"/div]]>

<![CDATA[Daniel Koh and John Mark Rozendaal.

New York, NY – On Tuesday, June 24, two activists were summoned to the Kings and New York Criminal Court at 1 Centre Street after their arrest at a protest against the NYPD.

Daniel Koh from the New York Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression (NYAARPR) and climate justice activist John Mark Rozendaal were targeted for arrest during an action at the New York City Police Foundation Gala. Every year, the wealthiest New Yorkers use the gala to donate millions to the already bloated police department. This year was NYAARPR’s second annual protest.

!--more--

After the June 5 rally in front of the Intrepid Museum, Koh began to lead the crowd on a march. Organizers unfurled a banner across the 44th Street crosswalk on the West Side Highway. The banner read, “Shut down the NYPD gala!” Immediately, the police escalated to physical violence, shoving attendees to the ground and ordering people out of the street.

While moving to the sidewalk, Koh and Rozendaal were singled out by officers, who handcuffed them and took them to the 7th Precinct, where they were given summons on the charge of disorderly conduct. They were offered pro bono representation by Moira Meltzer-Cohen, a longtime supporter and defender of the right to protest.

At the June 24 hearing, Meltzer-Cohen was quick to point out the poor writing and lack of detail in both tickets. The judge took only seconds to dismiss the charges, even going so far as to say that the tickets “reek of hearsay.” Many other defendants saw similarly quick dismissals, whether for improperly written tickets or for unjustified arrest, a damning reflection of the NYPD’s history of incompetence and abuse of power.

Koh said after the hearing, “Today’s outcome was the best it could be - many are not so lucky. But our victory today means we can fight even more fiercely in defense of our communities and those most vulnerable to state violence.”

Communities in New York City and around the country are experiencing heightened political repression. Local and federal forces are cracking down on activism. It is critical that setbacks are accurately assessed and organized against.

<![CDATA[Protest at NYPD gala.

New York, NY - On June 5, dozens of community members and activists gathered outside of the Intrepid Museum to protest the New York City Police Foundation annual gala. The gala raises millions of dollars for the already over-bloated NYPD budget and goes to creating police community outreach, opening and maintaining overseas NYPD offices, and buying innovative technology. Tickets range from $2500 to $250,000.

!--more--

The New York Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression has organized this protest for two years in a row. They stood alongside several community and student organization, such as NYU Students for a Democratic Society, Equality for Flatbush, Justice for Eudes Pierre, Nodutdol, and JUPI.

The primary demands this year were seen scattered throughout brightly lettered signs: “Fund communities, not cops,” “Stop funding police terror,” Cops off campuses now” and “End all collaboration with the Trump administration.”

Protesters gathered along the sidewalk as the wealthy elite walked by them in their finery. As the gala-goers walked past, protesters chanted “Blood on your hands” and the guests scurried or jogged to try to get by past them faster.

Shivani Ishwar, the chair of NYAARPR, kicked off the speeches by saying, “instead of funding our communities, the cops get billions of dollars out of the city budget, and then the Police Foundation gives them millions more! That money that they’re raising right across the street from us goes to helping the NYPD terrorize our city.”

The next speech was from Lee Dynes, a lead organizer with the Alliance who said, “What's worse, is that we have a mayor who has been politically captured by Donald Trump. Cop-mayor Eric Adams has shown that he is nothing more than a lackey of Trump's and that his interests align perfectly with Trump's racist and repressive policies. Eric Adams has long said that he wants to reverse New York's sanctuary city laws, and we all know he has vastly increased the amount of police in our city, especially in the subway system.”

The rally ended with a speech by Sharif Hall, the secretary of NYAARPR, who spoke about the Eudes Pierre case.

As the doors to the gala closed, NYAARPR marched to block the West Side Highway. With a 45-foot banner, protesters blocked traffic to get cars to honk and make overwhelming noise to disrupt the gala. Two people were arrested but the march continued forward.

The night ended with protesters gathering at the 7th Precinct until the two brave arrested activists were let go.

NYAARPR will continue to protest the New York City Polic Foundation and its gala, as it represents everything wrong with the NYPD and the wealthy elites bent on destroying the city.

#NewYorkNY #NY #InJusticeSystem #NAARPR #NYAARPR

div id="sharingbuttons.io"/div]]>
