#PortlandOR #OR #ImmigrantRights #PDXCD #DerechosDeLosInmigrantes #Trump #NationalGuard #GuardiaNacional

div id="sharingbuttons.io"/div]]>

The deployment of the National Guard was announced one week after the city announced a citation to the ICE facility for violating its land use agreement by holding detainees over the 12-hour limit, a move pushed for by local activists, as a part of a campaign to revoke the ICE permit and shut down the facility.

After the announcement of the deployment of the national guard, numbers swelled at the ICE facility, with large protests led by Portland Contra Las Deportaciones (PDXCD), a Portland immigrant rights organization that led weekly protests of over 400 people at the ICE facility, in which they blocked the driveway and continuing to demand the revocation of the permit.

The continuous protests were despite Oregon officials like Senator Jeff Merkley telling Portlanders “don’t take the bait” and to stay away from the ICE facility or else risk further crackdown.

Organizers with PDXCD rejected this perspective and met Trump with a fight. “We don’t hide from the Trump administration when they try to carry out their xenophobic and racist agenda in the streets of our city using the military,” said organizer Blaire Glennon.

Throughout the weeks of protests after the announcement of the deployment, DHS arrested many protesters. The highest number of arrests occurred on October 4, in which the main organizers of the protest were arrested during the first 15 minutes of the action, in a seemingly targeted arrest.

In the court proceedings, it was later revealed the National Guard was present in the ICE facility on October 4, despite a temporary restraining order placed against the deployment in court.

Organizers leaped into action to protect protesters, creating a legal defense team to fight back against repression, while not allowing it to stop them from protesting at the ICE facility.

While protests raged on at the ICE facility, a battle was waged in court against the deployment of the National Guard. The court case proceeded in relation to the protests at the ICE facility, as more media attention was gathered by the protesters showing the abuse of DHS and ICE, and the fearlessness of the protesters, the courts moved to more firmly oppose the deployment, leading to the final permanent ban.

“It is due to the people and the people alone that the National Guard deployment was blocked. Through keeping up the pressure on the government with protests in which we would not back down, we showed them it would be a mistake to send the guard to Portland,” said organizer Emily Brown.

The Trump administration is appealing the permanent ban, and the court case is expected to continue forward.

Locally, protesters continue to push city officials; PDXCD is planning a protest at city hall this Wednesday, November 19, to rally against a “Detention Facility Impact Fee” ordinance proposed by Portland Councilors Angelita Morillo and Mitch Green to find private owners of detention facilities for any costs the city incurs as a result of protests in the surrounding area. Organizers say this does not meet the demands raised by Portlanders and demand the full revocation of the permit and for the facility to be shut down. 60 days have passed since the initial citation was issued and so per city code the revocation process to revoke the permit can begin.

Protesters plan to meet each new development by mobilizing into the streets.

#PortlandOR #OR #ImmigrantRights #PDXCD #NationalGuard #Trump

div id="sharingbuttons.io"/div]]>

The fare increases come despite overwhelming opposition from transit riders. They were proposed amid a sharp increase in police and National Guard in the transit system, instituted by Governor Kathy Hochul and New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

MTA CEO Janno Lieber has also been pushing for aggressive fare evasion crackdown, spending millions of dollars on turnstile spikes, private security, and locking emergency exit doors which pose a significant risk in case of fire. Many chapters across the country participated, but for students in New Orleans this action meant more than just solidarity. Governor Jeff Landry’s pending deployment of the National Guard looms over Louisiana’s major cities including New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Shreveport and Alexandria.

At Tulane, Students for a Democratic society organized a speakout to stand in solidarity with Chicago. Protesters chanted “New Orleans isn’t licking boots! No Trump, no troops!” condemning Jeff Landry’s decision to call the National Guard in their city and demanding Tulane not comply with ICE.

“An increasingly powerful billionaire class is consolidating power at the expense of us all,” said Tulane law student Andreas Saint-Rouge “We must remember now more than ever to organize. We must stand by Chicago and all those affected by the militarized henchmen of Donald Trump.”

Afterwards, Tulane students joined their sister chapter at another SDS rally in front of Loyola University New Orleans. There, over 25 Loyola students rallied chanting, “No troops on the ground, no bombs in the air! U.S. out of everywhere!” and “From NOLA to Chicago, Trump's troops have got to go!”

Nat Schrodt, a Loyola student and member of SDS, connected the day of solidarity with Chicago to the local struggle saying, “Two weeks ago, Governor Jeff Landry requested the activation of Louisiana National Guard to Shreveport, New Orleans and Baton Rouge under the pretense of keeping down crime.” The crowd yelled “shame” in response as Schrodt continued, “We know this is a ruse, a gross step in the Trump regime's authoritarian playbook. But come as they may, we will be ready, organized, and prepared to stand against this shit.” The crowd responded with an eruption of applause.

“The fightback is growing and winning. In Los Angeles and Chicago, the people ran ICE out of their communities!
New Orleans, LA – On October 16, Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) hosted a “No Troops, No Trump” emergency rally and spoke out at both Tulane University and at Loyola University New Orleans in response to a national day of action called by National SDS.

The day of action was one meant to show solidarity with the people of Chicago.

Just last night, students at Loyola kicked TPUSA, backed by the entire GOP, off of campus,” said Carson Cruse, speaking for the Freedom Road Socialist Organization. “That’s what we do when we fight back. We dare to win!”

Saturday’s protest was one of 2700 actions planned for No Kings day across the United States.

!--more--

The rally was one of New Orleans’ largest ever, with the people chanting “No kings, no Trump!” Indivisible also added the demand for “No troops” into the branding of the event, to fight back against Trump and Landry’s plan to send the National Guard to cities across Louisiana including New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Shreveport and Alexandria.

Before the action, Indivisible organizers encouraged demonstrators to descend down to the Great Lawn from every direction, taking the Greenway as a chance to march in contingents and affiliate groups. Students for a Democratic Society chapters from Tulane and Loyola Universities led a student contingent of 30 people to the rally, carrying a banner that read, “Dare to struggle, dare to win!” A Palestine contingent stood together waving flags. Some contingents showed up in costume. A group of women showed up in hairnetted wigs and red aprons labeled “Aunt Tifa” and various inflatable costumes from frogs to crawfish littered the crowd.

Grassroots organizations tabled around the perimeter to get attendees involved in the broader movement.

Speakers included immigrant rights activists and ACLU representatives, in addition to cultural performances. Notably, among policing and attacks on democracy, Palestine was one of the issues in the forefront. Hakm Murad of the Palestinian Youth Movement challenged the crowd, saying the resistance against Donald Trump needs to stand in solidarity with people across the world oppressed by U.S. intervention.

“Palestine is a litmus test for all of us! Our enemy is not just one president, we need to take down the whole empire,” Murad said to applause.

As the program for the rally ended, many in the crowd wanted to keep the action going. Activists in the Freedom Road Socialist Organization (FRSO) led chants and slowly exited the field, drawing a crowd of about 150 people back down the Greenway chanting, “Trump says get back, we say fight back!” and “Hands off Palestine, hands off Venezuela!”

The impromptu march landed under the North Claiborne bridge, where the architecture amplified the chants of the crowd and the speakers.

“Trump is a good-for-nothing billionaire that gets rich off of our exploitation. Being president is the most lucrative gig he’s had yet. Trump has no business running this country and no business telling us what the hell to do. We run this, not Trump,” declared Toni Mar, member of the FRSO.

“Because of the steadfast resistance of the Palestinian people and their supporters, the tide is turning against Israel, and more importantly against all U.S. imperialism,” stated Cristine Farah, member of New Orleans Stop Helping Israel’s Ports (NOSHIP). Across the country, chapters of SDS participated by holding their own protests on their respective campuses.

!--more--

Students say no Trump, no troops, no ICE

Ariana Vega started off the protest stating, “Trump wants to make an example out of Chicago, but as we have seen again and again is that he failed and he will continue to fail. The people of Chicago are not ones that are easily brought to their knees!”

Vega continued “We will continue to fight and we will continue to struggle until we kick Trump and his troops out of our city. We will win because the power of the people is greater than the people in power!”

Rodrigo Cortes Espinoza, representing Sanctuary for All at UIC, spoke of the recent abduction of two community members on campus grounds, “Our students have vocalized their concerns for their wellbeing, the safety of their families, and stability of their neighborhoods as we watch the invasion of Chicago by federal and external state militants.”

“As U.S. history unfolds its imperial pattern, it becomes more difficult to look away. The dichotomy of scholarship lies before us: to remain an observer or to respond to a call-to-action,” said Espinoza.

Micaela Foreman, a member of the Graduate Employees Organization (GEO) at UIC, emphasized, “As graduate workers, we are one of the most vulnerable populations of workers here on campus, making well below a living wage and working well over 40 hours a week. Our union is our first line of defense against exploitation.”

“Capitalism is structured to atomize the working class, making them easier to exploit. In this moment, the government is working overtime to push xenophobia as a justification for anti-immigrant violence. Unions instead build solidarity along what unites us: our exploitation by the ruling class,” Foreman concluded.

To wrap up the rally, Angel Naranjos, a member of New SDS at UIC said, “This protest we’re having today is special because it’s part of a national day of action to stand up to Trump, to say no to ICE, to say no to troops in Chicago, no deportations and legalization for all undocumented immigrants!”

“From Chicago to Palestine, occupation is a crime!” Naranjos called for solidarity with the people of Palestine, where a ceasefire had been called only a few days before, as well as urging people to attend the “No Kings Day” action being held on October 18.

After the program, students began their march towards University Hall and around East Campus. As the demonstrators made their way back to the Quad, chants demanding an end to the Trump administration and federal occupation of Chicago echoed through the university.

Join the student movement!

We encourage any student or young person not involved in the movement to join your local SDS chapter or help build one.

Uniting students and youth in action is important in building the broadest fight back against Trump’s reactionary agenda.

Join SDS by clicking here.

#ChicagoIL #IL #ImmigrantRights #PeoplesStruggles #Trump #NationalGuard #ICE #StudentMovement #SDS

div id="sharingbuttons.io"/div]]>
