Northampton, MA – On Sunday, January 11, the River Valley chapter of FRSO co-sponsored a rally with local activist groups demanding an end to both ICE funding and presence in their communities.

FRSO member Roman Handlen opened the rally with a speech honoring the life of Renee Nicole Good, mentioning the New Year’s Eve ICE murder of Keith Porter in Los Angeles and the 32 lives lost in ICE detention centers in 2025 and citing Good as “the most recent casualty in a systemic failure by a government that revels in terror and unrest.”

Citing the government’s current $50,000 signing bonus for new ICE agents, Handlen shamed the Trump administration for “incentivizing American citizens living in the poverty designed by their government to engage in domestic terrorism against their own communities in the same ways the military grooms working-class people to fight in our wars abroad for imperial interests.”

A representative from LUCE Immigrant Network in Holyoke spoke to the crowd about their Defense Hotline and how to get involved with organizing for immigrant community safety, stating, “Our collective power, vigilance, and solidarity are how we build the safety our communities deserve.”

Massachusetts State Representative Lindsey Sabadosa encouraged citizens to contact their legislators and organizers led a moment of silence before over 1500 community members marched down Main Street with signs and chants against federally sanctioned violence, yelling “ICE out of our streets!”

River Valley MA rallies against U.S. war on Venezuela

<![CDATA[Northampton, Massachusetts, "U.S. hands off Venezuela".

Northampton, MA - On Saturday, November 29, community members from towns across the River Valley gathered in front of Northampton City Hall to protest President Trump’s war on Venezuela.

Protesters held signs stating, “U.S. hands off Venezuela” while Anti-Imperialist Action Committee (AIAC) organizer Aidan Mastroianni opened the rally. He explained the Trump administration intended to go to war with the sovereign nation of Venezuela, “whose only crime is refusing to bend a knee to American imperial interests.”

!--more--

Mastroianni explained, “Once again, a false narrative is being fed to the people of this country in order to manufacture consent for regime change and the plunder of resources from a nation in the Global South!”

He compared the Bush administration’s lies about weapons of mass destruction in 2003, used to justify the invasion of Iraq, to the new lies that Venezuela is a narco-state. Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio claim Nicolás Maduro leads a drug cartel and traffics narcotics into the United States. The false narrative about this fake cartel is the basis for the U.S. labeling President Maduro the head of a “foreign terrorist organization.”

Next up at the rally was the Western Massachusetts chapter of the Raging Grannies who led the crowd in three protest songs against U.S. wars.

Their singing was followed by Thea Paneth, a member of CODEPINK, asking, “What does Venezuela have that might be coveted? Are we facing another brutal war sure to cause mayhem because U.S. oil companies and financiers want to control Venezuela’s oil? In the struggle against the war on Iraq, we asked: how does our oil get under their sand?”

River Valley Massachusetts Veterans for Peace

Paneth paused and reminded the crowd, “Wars always come home.”

Mastroianni returned to leading the crowd in chants, “Not a penny! Not a dollar! We won’t pay for war and slaughter!”

Sam Murphy of the Freedom Road Socialist Organization (FRSO) came forward and read a statement from Maduro, as well as a statement from FRSO on the United States threats of war against Venezuela.

A leader from Massachusetts Peace Action, Merri Ansara, spoke next, “All of the Caribbean and Latin American states have said that all conflicts should be negotiated for peace. We have to make sure that we stand with all of the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean and say not just ‘No war in Venezuela,’ but no regional war. Venezuela cannot be the entry to empire expansion by the United States.”

Kevin Young, a local professor at UMASS Amherst specializing in Latin American history, spoke about the “attitude of ownership” over the Western Hemisphere exhibited by Trump and United States officials. Young spoke about Democratic Party leaders encouraging American soldiers to defy illegal orders, “The U.S. cannot carry out their plans without the consent and cooperation of the U.S. military, so one of the most important things that we can do is making clear that soldiers have the constitutional duty to refuse illegal orders.”

Alex Ivans, a representative from Veterans for Peace said, “When I heard we were going to war with Venezuela, my first question was: ‘Why?’ We know that using violence at home doesn’t help with the war on drugs and we know using it abroad doesn’t help, and even if it did - Venezuela doesn’t have a massive drug smuggling problem itself. None of the fishing boats that have been bombed could have even brought fentanyl to the United States if they had it.”

Nick Mottern, of Demilitarize Western Mass, explained that locally the Northampton L3 Harris Corporation builds attack submarines and military weapons. His group fights to shut down war profiteering.

To close out, Mastroianni called for action, “Are you willing to stand by while the Trump administration attempts to turn Venezuela into the next Iraq? Into the next Libya, Syria, or Vietnam? The list goes on and it will continue to grow if we don’t fight back against the destructive ambitions of the U.S. war machine - in order to do just that, we must organize ourselves and our communities in a manner that is conducive towards effective and sustained resistance. A world free of imperialism and never-ending war is possible, but it will not be brought about by sitting on our hands.”

#NorthamptonMA #MA #AntiWarMovement #Venezuela #AIAC

div id="sharingbuttons.io"/div]]>

<![CDATA[Stop & Shop strikers.

Holoke, MA - On the sixth day of an ongoing strike, a picket line of 40 workers, union families, and supporters faced a sparse parking lot at the Lincoln Street Stop & Shop in Holyoke. The strike was called by United Food & Commercial Workers (UFCW) earlier this week in response to Stop & Shop's efforts to strongarm severe cuts within the proposed contract. According to Local 1459, these cuts include a shift to 401K away from pensions, inadequate wage compensation and attacks on the health benefits of workers.

!--more--

Positioned at both entrances of the supermarket in equal numbers, the strikers encouraged their neighbors to do their shopping elsewhere, explaining their reasons for demonstrating. Some offered directions and transportation to other local stores to shoppers arriving by bus and rideshare services.

In spite of a plummeting stock and massive losses in store profits, Stop & Shop's executives have doubled down on their proposal. Reporting from Northampton, nine miles north of Holyoke, Fight Back! reporters observed that scab labor had been brought in to work the warehouses used by the supermarket chain. At the Lincoln Street location in Holyoke, scab labor maintained the store's daily operation, to the tune of $20 per hour.

Cat Dunne, 60, an employee and UFCW member, noted that this decision yielded unexpected problems for management at the Holyoke location, where meats, produce and deli items have waited on shelves and vitrines past their sell-by dates for the strike to end. "Boar's Head did an integrity check on their meats, and instead of crediting the company for the waste, they took a picture and sent it to corporate and said, 'No credit!' They were 'eating it' this time. Way too much waste."

Dunne added, "The store is dead. Eew. They've had people in there flipping the fruits and vegetables to make them look decent. Nothing's been restocked or destocked since last Wednesday."

Asked about the demeanor of the fresh faces working the aisles, Dunne shook her head. "They like to instigate people. We had a big issue with them Saturday, so the manager made them stay in the store and not come out."

In an April 11 strike notice, UFCW Local 1459 states, "Stop & Shop's parent company, Ahold Delhaize, saw over $2 billion in profits last year and got a U.S. tax cut of $225 million in 2017. The company is claiming the proposed cuts are necessary, but is unlawfully refusing to provide financial information to verify that claim."

"While Stop & Shop continues to propose drastically cutting worker benefits, Ahold shareholders voted on April 10 to give themselves an 11.1% raise in dividends over the last year. The expected payout will be on April 25 for around $880 million."

The UFCW has called for a larger turnout for the weekend in anticipation of the Easter holiday.

#Holoke #MA #PoorPeoplesMovements #strike #Strikes #StopShop #UFCWLocal1459 #laborStruggle

div id="sharingbuttons.io"/div]]>
