Milwaukee organizations demand Assembly Speaker Vos hold public hearing for Reproductive Freedom Act

<![CDATA[Protesters hold signs with slogans like "Down with Dobbs" and "We won'd go back, we want Roe back".

Milwaukee, WI - On Friday, February 16, Reproductive Justice Action - Milwaukee (RJAM) held a press conference outside of Milwaukee City Hall to call on Wisconsin Assembly Leader Robin Vos to hold a public hearing for the Reproductive Freedom Act.

!--more--

RJAM Chair Lauren Forbush started off the press conference with a chant, “When reproductive rights are under attack, what do we do? Stand up, fight back!”

“We are outside City Hall this morning to call attention to the Reproductive Freedom Act. The Reproductive Freedom Act would expand access to abortion services statewide,” Forbush said.

Isabella Gargi of RJAM was the first speaker for the press conference. “This legislation has three parts. The first part restores the power of individuals to make their own pregnancy health care decisions by removing medically unnecessary restrictions and bans on abortion care, and removes inappropriate political interference from the doctor-patient relationships. The second part affirms the obligation of health care providers to provide medically accurate information to patients and creates a right for patients to receive medically accurate information from their healthcare provider; and the third part ensures that publicly funded pregnancy counseling services provide all options counseling and services.”

Maya Seshan from Medical Students for Choice used her speaking time to highlight the need for a public hearing for the Reproductive Freedom Act. “Voters across Wisconsin have affirmed the need and right to be able to access abortion care! Restrictive abortion laws affect patients, healthcare providers, and medical workers.”

After voicing her support for the public hearing, she went on to explain how the previous abortion ban has impacted pregnant people with life-threatening complications during pregnancy. One of these conditions is preeclampsia, which causes life-threatening complications to the pregnant person during pregnancy, and if they continue with giving birth they can experience life-threatening conditions postpartum as well. Preeclampsia is only diagnosed at or after 20-weeks of gestation, while the current abortion restrictions in Wisconsin only allow abortion up to 21 weeks.

“Under current Wisconsin law, this condition cannot be treated safely. All healthcare professionals and patients will experience uncertainty until the Reproductive Freedom Act is codified into law,” Seshan said.

The next speaker was Tracey Schwertfeger, a registered nurse and leader with the Saint Francis Hospital chapter of Wisconsin Federation of Nurses and Health Professionals Local 5000. She spoke in favor of a public hearing for the Reproductive Freedom Act on behalf of labor activists in the medical field.

Schwertfeger stated, “Abortion access is access to healthcare and access to freedom. The denial of access is an undue burden on people, disproportionately affecting those who are already marginalized and facing socioeconomic challenges. Our duty as healthcare professionals is to advocate for equitable care ensuring that all people can exercise their right to make informed decisions about their reproductive health. By facilitating an open discussion on this matter, we have a democratic process that is for us, by us!”

The last speaker was Blake Jones of RJAM, who read off a statement from the authors of the Reproductive Freedom Act, Senator Kelda Roys and Representative Francesca Hong. The statement went on to reiterate the three components of the bill and emphasized, “A key piece is about ensuring Wisconsinites have access to evidence-based information to make the best decisions for themselves.”

To close out the press conference, Reproductive Justice Action - Milwaukee called on all Wisconsinites to demand Assembly Speaker Robin Vos to hold a public hearing for the Reproductive Freedom Act. Back in January, the Wisconsin Assembly on Health, Aging, and Long-Term Care held a public hearing for a proposed referendum that would enact a five-week abortion ban. These activists believe that if the committee held a public hearing for legislation to take away healthcare access, they must hold a public hearing for legislation to expand healthcare access.

You can help support this demand by participating in their call-in and email-in campaigns to demand the public hearing.
Reproductive Justice Action Milwaukee targets crisis pregnancy centers in Wisconsin

<![CDATA[Milwaukee protest in defense of reproductive rights. | Fight Back! News/staff

Milwaukee, WI - Nearly two dozen people gathered in front of the Farwell Women’s Care Center on Milwaukee’s East Side on the morning of Saturday, November 18, to raise awareness of local crisis pregnancy centers (CPCs) throughout the state. Reproductive Justice Action Milwaukee hosted the picket and chalk-writing action to raise awareness and highlight the risks these centers pose to reproductive healthcare, by the CPCs masquerading as legitimate health facilities.

!--more--

“Crisis pregnancy centers are tools of reproductive injustice. They place themselves in marginalized communities to purposely target oppressed nationalities and they lie about being able to provide long-term support to the pregnant person after they give birth," said Lauren Forbush, the chair of the Reproductive Justice Action Milwaukee (RJAM). "The decision to have an abortion is not as simple as 'making a decision or having a choice.' Most times people have an abortion because their situation under capitalism doesn’t allow them to have a choice."

RJAM held a traditional picket and chalk-writing, led chants, and had three speakers outside the center. Favorite chants from picketers included, “We are unstoppable, another world is possible!” and “Get up, get down, Milwaukee is a pro-choice town!” Chalk designs also included slogans such as “free lies inside” and “Anti-abortion clinic.”

Aside from Forbush representing RJAM, there were other speakers from the Medical College of Wisconsin’s Medical Students for Choice (MCW-MSC) and the Affiliated Medical Services Escorts. All three speakers outlined the various ways in which CPCs have directly impacted the community at large. A couple of speakers detailed their personal experiences either seeking care at a CPC or escorting at an abortion care facility across the road, while MCW-MSC highlighted the dangers and medical misinformation these centers have been known to give vulnerable patients. All speakers gave a call to action to demand the Wisconsin state assembly to vote “no'' on AB 344.

SB 345 and AB 344 would allocate $1 million of taxpayer money to ChooseLife Wisconsin, which would in turn disperse these funds to the over 80 crisis pregnancy centers in the state. This is in direct opposition to state statutes that prohibit the same funds be used by legitimate medical facilities that provide or counsel individuals on receiving abortion care. SB 345 has already passed through the state senate in October.

Crisis pregnancy centers are run by anti-abortion organizations that prioritize birth over the health and wellbeing of the pregnant person. These facilities will use deceit, lies and shame in an attempt to coerce individuals into not seeking abortion care. Free ultrasounds and pregnancy testing are performed by predominantly volunteer workers with no proper medical training and routinely provide inaccurate dating of the pregnancy. They also provide counseling that contains outright false claims that link abortion to increased rates of breast cancer and suicide in an attempt to scare people aware from seeking abortion care. To make matters worse, these facilities also refuse birth control to patients and use more lies and shame to promote abstinence-only sexual “education.”

Forbush indicated that future actions, such as a call-in campaign, are in the works to contact representatives to vote “no '' on these bills, as well as future pickets in front of other crisis pregnancy centers.

#MilwaukeeWI #ReproductiveFreedom #AbortionRights #CPCs #RJAM

div id="sharingbuttons.io"/div]]>

Minnesota Abortion Action Committee counterprotests anti-choice ‘40 Days for Life’ vigil

<![CDATA[MNAAC counter-protest of Pro-Life Action Ministries’ "40 Days for Life" vigil in Saint Paul, Minnesota. | Fight Back! News/Olivia Crull

St. Paul, MN – On Sunday, November 5, members of the Minnesota Abortion Action Committee held a rally, decorated cars with signs, flags, and written slogans before driving the streets of Saint Paul, and then rallied again in front of a so-called “vigil for the unborn” organized by Pro-Life Action Ministries, a Minnesota-based anti-choice religious group.

!--more--

This action was organized in response to the closing vigil of a 40-day-long campaign by Pro-Life Action Ministries, in which the anti-abortion group occupied sidewalks in front of the Saint Paul Planned Parenthood. Pro-Life Action Ministries calls itself an “interdenominational Christian organization dedicated to publicly defending the sanctity of human life,” and its members are a common presence in front of facilities that provide abortion in the Twin Cities. They harass people trying to enter in an attempt to dissuade them from receiving abortions, and their pamphlets are rife with scare tactics and misinformation, such as spurious claims that abortions put people at risk of breast cancer and infertility, or that the first dose of a medication abortion can be “reversed” by taking large amounts of progesterone, an untested practice that lacks FDA approval.

Pro-Life Action Ministries is currently suing the city of Minneapolis over an ordinance passed last year by the city council entitled “Security of Reproductive Healthcare Facilities,” which prohibits the act of blocking access to the entrance of a reproductive healthcare facility. The group claims that this ordinance infringes on their freedom of speech, though their presence often frightens and intimidates people seeking care at these facilities.

“Even though abortion is legal in Minnesota for the time being, the social stigma and misinformation alone are enough to make people feel like abortion isn’t an option, and that stigma is alive and well with groups like these,” said MNAAC member Kristen Bledsoe in a speech preceding the car caravan. “It’s our goal today to let them know that they are not welcome here! The Twin Cities are a pro-abortion town!”

Bledsoe went on to highlight the plight of unionized Planned Parenthood workers facing repression from Planned Parenthood management, saying, “As members of MNAAC, we know that workers’ rights are reproductive rights are human rights, and we extend our solidarity in their struggle for better working conditions and fair treatment.”

MNAAC member Sarah Murphy highlighted the dangers of groups like Pro-Life Action Ministries and “crisis pregnancy centers,” saying, “These 40 Days for Life people want to make it even harder for Minnesotans and our neighbors to access reproductive healthcare. Planned Parenthood is a less-than-perfect organization, but they provide real, accurate, low-cost medical assistance to people who need it. These people camping out front saying their little prayers need to go away!”

The connection between reproductive rights and Palestinian liberation was further illustrated by Bledsoe. “The right-wing Christofascist forces behind crisis pregnancy centers and pro-life groups are the same ones behind bills that seek to criminalize the existence of trans people and further increase U.S. spending on police and military,” she said, “and they are the same ones behind the enormous sums of money that the U.S. sends to Israel to aid in their genocidal occupation of Palestine. Our politicians are sending taxpayer dollars to Israel so they can continue bombing hospitals and refugee camps. And these decisions are influenced by ‘pro-life’ lobbyists, who claim to care about the sanctity of human life!”

After decorating cars with slogans like “Eight clinics is not enough for a sanctuary state” and “Abortion is healthcare,” attendees caravanned down University Avenue, attracting cheers from passersby, before driving to the Planned Parenthood and parking in front of a small crowd of anti-abortion protesters. Chanting “Abortion is healthcare! Abortion is essential!” and “Pro-Life? That’s a lie! You don’t care if people die!”, MNAAC members confronted the protesters for several minutes and successfully disrupted their vigil.

MNAAC continues its campaign against crisis pregnancy centers via education and outreach, protests outside of “crisis pregnancy centers” (CPCs) and progress toward regulating CPCs at the city level.

The purpose of this panel was for progressive organizations to network, present the work they are doing in their communities, and have a discussion about pressing political issues. All of these activities contribute to the goal of building a united front against the DeSantis administration and the deterioration of material conditions, especially for the working class of Central Florida. “Florida’s on fire in more ways than one, so we’re glad to be in concert with anyone trying to put the pieces together,” stated the social media post promoting the event.

!--more--

The topics discussed at the panel ranged from economic and food justice to combating the assault on trans rights and how to move beyond 2024. One of the highlights of the panel involved a discussion on the current anti-trans legislation in the U.S. and contrasting it to the recently passed Family Code in Cuba. From the content of the laws, expanding the legal protections in Cuba, to the process of the actual drafting of the legislation, where thousands of meetings were held to discuss the thoughts of the Cuban people, Cuba is showing what a true democracy means for the people.

The organizations present were Las Semillas, March for Our Lives Pine Hills, Freedom Road Socialist Organization Orlando, The Umbrella Brigade, The All-African People’s Revolutionary Party, Black Men Build Orlando, FL Student Power, Orlando DSA, and Ladies In Full Effect (L.I.F.E.).

The next panel hosted by Las Semillas will be in October.
As legal battle over abortion in Wisconsin heats up, obstacles appear

<![CDATA[Organizers with RJAM host a press conference outside City Hall.")

Milwaukee, WI - On July 11, Reproductive Justice Action Milwaukee (RJAM) held a press conference in front of Milwaukee City Hall concerning the recent updates to the lawsuit being pursued by Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul against the 1849 state statute 940.04. This lawsuit was launched by Kaul on June 28, 2022, in response to the Supreme Court’s Dobbs v. Jackson decision and came in the wake of mass protests across the state.

!--more--

If this lawsuit wins, the next hurdle to abortion access will be from a different state statute, 940.195, which says that anyone who "causes bodily harm to an unborn child by an act done with intent to cause bodily harm to that unborn child, to the woman who is pregnant with that unborn child or another" is guilty of a misdemeanor and several felonies. This was included as a part of Wisconsin's Abortion Prevention and Family Responsibility Act of 1985. The law is vague by design and keeps the door open to criminalize women and others seeking abortions as well as those medical professionals who provide the services.

On July 7, Dane County Judge Diane Schlipper said in a ruling, “There is no such thing as an ‘1849 Abortion Ban’ in Wisconsin. A physician who performs a consensual medical abortion commits a crime only after the fetus or unborn child reaches viability.”

“In short, this doesn’t mean abortion access will be immediately restored,” said Blake Jones, propaganda chair of RJAM, during their July 11 press conference. “However, this ruling will most likely be referred to the Wisconsin Supreme Court to vote on sometime after August 1.”

After the Wisconsin Supreme Court decides on this lawsuit, Wisconsin would revert to the more recent state statute 940.15. “This statute includes banning telehealth consultations, requires parental consent for an abortion, and a mandatory 24-hour waiting period,” said Jones.

During the press conference, RJAM recognized the importance of 940.04 being made obsolete, but also recognized that the fight for abortion access is not over. The organization is calling for abortion access on demand, with no mandatory waiting periods, access to telemedicine consultations, and rural access to abortion services.

“We, along with other grassroots organizations, are committed to fighting for the expansion and protection of reproductive healthcare, to protect the right to bodily autonomy, and to ensure that right can never be threatened again in the state of Wisconsin," said Jones.

#MilwaukeeWI #AbortionBan #AbortionRights #reproductiveJustice

div id="sharingbuttons.io"/div]]>

<![CDATA[Minneapolis, Minnesota protest against recent Supreme Court decisions.")

Minneapolis, MN - 30 protesters gathered in front of Mayday Books in the West Bank neighborhood on July 8 to oppose the recent U.S. Supreme Court (SCOTUS) decisions that end affirmative action, enable LBGTQ discrimination, and block student loan forgiveness.

!--more--

Activists also commemorated the first anniversary of the June 24, 2022, overturn of Roe v. Wade by the SCOTUS in the Dobbs v. Jackson decision. In the year since, 14 states now have near, or total, abortion bans while six states have gestational restrictions.

“When Roe was overturned, many activists sensed that this was only the beginning. Unfortunately, their intuition was correct,” remarked Sarah Murphy, a member of the Minnesota Abortion Action Committee (MNAAC).

Murphy continued, “Just last week, they ruled that acknowledging unequal access due to race through affirmative action is unconstitutional. Literally the next day, they ruled that discriminating against queer and trans people is totally acceptable as long as you say it's because of Jesus.” Murphy referenced the court case of 303 Creative v. Elenis, in which the SCOTUS ruled in favor of a Colorado-based web designer who stated that her Christian faith requires her to turn away LGBTQ clients.

Carolyn Handke, speaking on behalf of Period Wellness, stated, "Periods and abortions are a normal part of healthcare for people who menstruate. Everyone needs access to safe and healthy menstrual cycles and abortion care. Not just those who can afford it.”

Handke expressed the need to expand abortion access in Minnesota, as it has become an abortion safe haven for people in surrounding states. Abortion is illegal in neighboring states North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin, and Iowa voted to implement a six-week abortion ban on July 11.

"The Supreme Court has not stopped its assault on the democratic rights of the people; from allowing businesses to sue unions for losses in strikes, to allowing LGBTQ people to be discriminated against by businesses, to attacks on the rights of Black and native people,” said Siobhan Moore of the Freedom Road Socialist Organization.

“At the U of M, the administration wants to cut budgets for already underfunded gender and ethnic studies departments," remarked Sorcha Lona, a member of Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) at the University of Minnesota. She continued, "These departments that the student movement fought so hard for will be devastated by this decision.”

SCOTUS rulings are hitting students and higher education hard. On June 29, in the case Students for Fair Admission v. Harvard, the SCOTUS ruled that race-based admissions for schools were discriminatory, overturning affirmative action. In another blow to students, the SCOTUS ruled in Biden v. Nebraska against the Biden administration’s student loan forgiveness. This plan would have delivered up to $20,000 in student loan forgiveness for about 43 million people living in the U.S.

Rachel Storm, also with MNAAC, spoke about political repression by the FBI, saying, “Just recently, one of our comrades from SDS, Gillian \[Rath\], was contacted by the FBI, and asked about the anti-CPC work we’ve been doing."

The FBI questioned her about abortion rights activism and her work in opposition to anti-abortion centers, despite not having done anything illegal. Anti-abortion centers, alternatively known as crisis pregnancy centers or CPCs, will no longer receive state funding in the state of Minnesota thanks to the passing of state legislation this spring. However, most CPCs still receive funding from right-wing evangelical organizations with deep pockets. CPCs outnumber legitimate abortion clinics 11 to 1 in the state of Minnesota.

Storm continued, "According to an internal report from the FBI, they’ve opened ten times as many investigations into ‘abortion-related terrorism’ cases than they had in 2021. And this uptick in FBI investigations comes directly from pressure by Republican congresspeople, urging the FBI to investigate charges of 'pro-abortion terrorism.'"

Targeting abortion clinic staff and abortion rights activists, anti-abortion advocates have committed at least eleven murders since 1993. There were 26 attempted murders in the same time period.

Storm concluded, “Does it make any sense for the FBI to target pro-abortion activists when it's abundantly clear who is perpetuating the violence here?”

The Abort the Court protest was organized by the Minnesota Abortion Action Committee, Students for a Democratic Society, Twin Cities Coalition for Justice for Jamar, and Taking Back Pride.

#MinneapolisMN #Labor #LGBTQ #PeoplesStruggles #abortion #Antiracism #AbortionRights #SCOTUS

div id="sharingbuttons.io"/div]]>

<![CDATA[Enter a descriptive sentence about the photo here.

Milwaukee, WI - Milwaukee organizations hosted their second annual People’s Independence Day on July 4. Partner organizations, led by the Milwaukee Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression (MAARPR), Reproductive Justice Action - Milwaukee (RJAM) and Freedom Road Socialist Organization (FRSO), hosted a rally and march shedding light on the hypocrisy of July 4th and the United States’ unjustified claim of being the “nation of freedom.” The so-called “freedom” America claims to possess and “bestow” unto other nations is simply the freedom for the ruling class to oppress the working class, either domestically or internationally.

!--more--

Paraphrasing Frederick Douglass, Lo Cross, co-chair of the Milwaukee Alliance, asked, “What is the Fourth to people facing brutality from the police in and outside their classrooms, or the army in their homeland, or to those who don’t have community control over how they are policed?”

Cross’s remarks reflected a sentiment shared by all the speakers at the event, who spoke about different issues pertaining to U.S. oppression, such as attacks on bodily autonomy, the national oppression of Palestine, and the struggle over Cop City in Atlanta.

It is important to note that this year's event came shortly before two significant events - the first Republican Presidential Debate, which will be held in Milwaukee’s Fiserv Forum on August 23, and the looming Teamsters strike.

“A year and eleven days from now, dangerous people will be coming to Milwaukee. 4000 police officers, or as I like to call them, outside agitators, will be invading our city. They will be here to protect the people that protect them, the vicious, reactionary Republican Party,” said Omar Flores, spokesperson of the Coalition to March on the RNC. “Some people say it’s too dangerous to march against the Republicans. They are too violent, they are too reactionary. I say it's too dangerous to not march against the Republicans. What has ‘not fighting’ ever won for us? The people of Milwaukee, the people across the country who want a better world, we do not see any choice but to fight back. We must continue to fight against the agenda that has oppressed people for so long.”

Ethan Constello, a member of FRSO and rank-and-file Teamster at UPS, stated, “The road to freedom lies through socialism. Unions can do a lot, but under capitalism we will never throw off the chains of class exploitation and national oppression. Through class struggle unionism and militant rank-and-file paired with a militant leadership, we can make amazing gains. But we must look forward to the long term. We must build up an organization capable of dismantling capitalism and building up socialism. The right-wing legislators and Supreme Court justices are attacking hard-won gains of the people now more than ever. So we’ve gotta be hardcore!”

Overall, the event carried forward the important message for people fed up with this moribund system to take action and join organizations leading the different struggles. As contradictions heighten between the working class and capitalists, domestically and internationally, it becomes clearer day by day that they are losing their control. Everything under heaven is in utter chaos, the situation is excellent.

#MilwaukeeWI #AntiwarMovement #Labor #LGBTQ #AbortionRights #IndependenceDay

div id="sharingbuttons.io"/div]]>

<![CDATA[Tacoma, WA - On June 24, over 20 people came to a 7 a.m. protest organized by Progressive Student Union-UW Seattle and Progressive Student Union-UW Tacoma against an anti-abortion conference held at the University of Washington Tacoma.

!--more--

The Northwest Pro Life Conference’s goal, as stated on their website is to, "persevere until abortion is no more.” As such, they held workshops ranging from “Kicking Planned Parenthood Out of Schools” to “How to Defend Your Pro-Life Position.” Furthermore, they explicitly targeted children, as demonstrated by their youth discount.

However, students and community members showed that they will not stand idly by as their campus is used to further an anti-abortion agenda. Starting early in the morning, the crowd marched and chanted, “When abortion rights are under attack, what do we do? Stand up, fight back!” and, “From Seattle to Spokane, abortion rights are here to stay!”. After the chants, there were several speeches.

Maríana Bravo, a recently graduated high school student, said, “I stand here for those who had to stand still as they took on their choice, I stand here for those who made their choice in silence, I stand here for those who made their choice after unspeakable violence and violation, I stand for those who made for their choice because it was their choice respectfully, I stand for those who reclaimed their bodies and took control, I stand for those who fight for their choice every day.”

Gemini Gnull, a member of the Freedom Road Socialist Organization, said, “Marsha P. Johnson and the other warriors at the Stonewall Uprising who gave us Pride - happy Pride month! - to the brave queer fighters of the communist led New People’s Army in the Philippines, to the state-sponsored drags shows held by Socialist Cuba have shown us that when we fight, we can win, and that the road to communism necessitates our collective liberation.”

After the first round of speeches students and community members gathered around a pop-up tent provided by a local pastry company. Several small businesses shut down business for the day to support and join in the protest. The pop-up biscuit stand and other businesses that remained open donated proceeds towards reproductive clinics.

The activists soon returned to marching, chanting and giving speeches. Amelia Escobedo, an organizer with PSU-UW Tacoma, said, “Are men’s rights under attack? Are men forced to have vasectomies? Are there any laws on your genitalia? No. Then, why are their laws on women’s genitalia?”

The organizers demand that the university issue a statement to the campus community that the Northwest Pro Life Conference event is not endorsed by UW Tacoma, commit to a policy of providing readily accessible information about all upcoming campus events, and explore a policy establishing that all campus events must be officially sponsored by members of the campus community.

#TacomaWA #abortion #AbortionRights

div id="sharingbuttons.io"/div]]>

Minnesota: FBI investigating abortion rights movement, activists say no

<![CDATA[Minneapolis press conference denounces FBI harassment.")

Minneapolis, MN - Around two dozen students, journalists and community members gathered outside the Humphrey School of Public Affairs for June 15 press conference addressing the FBI harassment of SDS organizer Gillian Rath, regarding her activism surrounding abortion rights, including the SDS campaign in opposition to government-funded and predatory “crisis pregnancy centers.”

!--more--

The FBI called Rath several times last week. This FBI harassment of a student organizer is especially troubling given the FBI’s long history of infiltrating and disrupting organizations in student movements stretching back to the 1960s, when student activism took off in response to the Vietnam War and Civil Rights movement. The FBI’s harassment of Rath represents a larger pattern of state repression of progressive activism - further demonstrated by the bogus arrest and brutalization of the Tampa 5.

Local organizer Jess Sundin, speaking as a member of the Committee to Stop FBI Repression, made an important point about the FBI harassment and right-wing politics: “Republicans in DC have been calling for the FBI to criminalize this organizing. These are political decisions, and we are here to say no more.” Sundin also drew a connection between the repression faced by student activists like Gillian Rath and the Tampa 5 and her own experience with state repression. Thirteen years ago, the FBI raided the homes of anti-war activists across the country and attempted to bring up bogus charges against them. Just as that unjust attack on the freedom of speech was resisted then, the same attacks are being resisted now.

Sundin stressed that activists should never talk to the FBI.

Ashley Taylor-Gouge spoke on behalf of the Minnesota Abortion Action Committee (MNAAC), expanding on their campaign against predatory crisis pregnancy centers, which are backed by the forces of the religious right and, until recently, received funding from the Minnesota state government. This recent defunding is a major victory won by MNAAC and organizers working to defend abortion rights. Taylor-Gouge stated, “Every time that people rise up to fight back against injustice, we should expect the state to respond with attempts to silence us.”

Rath spoke about her experience with FBI harassment. She drew connections between what has happened to her and the situation of the Tampa 5 in Florida: “This is a direct attack on social movements.”

These instances of state repression of organizers show that the ruling class recognizes the threat that the people’s movements have to their stranglehold on power, and is using every tool at their disposal, from FBI harassment to political arrests in an attempt to suppress the people.

But Rath states, “They see that we will not back down and we will not stand for political repression by the state. Because when they threaten us with arrests, like happened recently here with the UMPD, charges with felonies, or have the FBI harass us, we will just persist and come back stronger.”

#MinneapolisMN #CommitteeToStopFBIRepression #PoliticalRepression #AbortionRights

div id="sharingbuttons.io"/div]]>

On June 24, take to the streets in protest as we reach one year without Roe!

<![CDATA[The movement for reproductive rights has scored some victories, but Roe has always been the floor – we want more!

Call to action June 24

Fight Back News Service is circulating the following joint call to action from the Reproductive Justice Action - Milwaukee and the Minnesota Abortion Action Committee.

!--more--

Since the summer of 2022, the fight for reproductive rights has been front and center in the people’s movements, as the Supreme Court has demonstrated that long held protections and fundamental human rights can be stripped from the masses quickly and without remorse. The overturning of Roe vs. Wade on June 24, 2022 effectively revoked federal protections for a person’s right to an abortion, meaning that states with conservative majorities across the country have been able to pass drastic abortion bans and restrictions. This is an attack on the women’s and reproductive rights movement which has fought long and hard for these freedoms, as well as an attack on accessible healthcare for all, and on the working class in general.

Birth control and the ability to terminate a pregnancy are basic forms of bodily autonomy. The overturning of Roe has reminded us that victories for bodily autonomy come from struggle, as people marched in the thousands last summer across the United States and continue to do so, and that the fight against the Christian Right is far from over. A recent battle over the F.D.A. approval of Mifepristone, a drug used in over half of U.S. abortions and which many people rely on when receiving an abortion at home or by mail, has demonstrated the effectiveness of grassroots struggle in fighting back against the anti-abortion agenda.

On April 15, 2023 activists and supporters in Milwaukee heeded the call of Reproductive Justice Action - Milwaukee (RJAM) to gather in protest outside the Milwaukee County Courthouse in opposition to the attacks against Mifepristone. This was only one of many protests to occur for the National Call to Action, since news broke of a decision by Matthew Kacsmaryk, a U.S. District judge based out of Amarillo, Texas, to suspend the F.D.A. approval of the medication. The fight to save access to Mifepristone was yet another hurdle in the broader struggle for bodily autonomy in Wisconsin where assisting, receiving and providing abortions is currently a felony charge due to State Statute 940.04. RJAM has been fighting for abortion access since the reinstatement of the nearly 200-year old law. The grassroots movement led by RJAM has taken many steps forward in the fight against the abortion ban. Some achievements include having a resolution passed by the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors stating that they do not agree with the current state laws, and having an advisory referendum on this most recent spring ballot that showed 76% of Milwaukee County voters wanted access to safe and legal abortion. Their fight to make Milwaukee an abortion sanctuary continues through two on-going initiatives. The first is forcing Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chishlom to sign a pledge stating he will dismiss all abortion cases, and the second is to win funding for Milwaukee County Employees’ travel expenses accrued from needing to receive abortion services out of state.

In Minneapolis, Minnesota, activists in the Minnesota Abortion Action Committee (MNAAC) simultaneously answered the call to defend Mifepristone with an emergency protest outside of Senator Amy Klobuchar’s office. With Minnesota acting as a sanctuary state for abortion in the upper Midwest, organizing efforts have focused on making abortion as accessible as possible, so that Minnesotans, as well as individuals from surrounding states where abortion is illegal, such as Wisconsin, can receive the reproductive healthcare they deserve. By calling this action and advocating for the protection of Mifepristone and medication abortion, the Minnesota Abortion Action Committee demonstrated their solidarity with the fight for abortion access nationwide. This spirit of solidarity in Minnesota has been consistent from the initial Dobbs decision and the overturning of Roe, when protesters in Minneapolis took to the streets by the thousands to defend reproductive rights, even if those rights were not under immediate attack in their state. The Minnesota Abortion Action Committee, as well as other reproductive justice forces, have translated that mass mobilization into campaigns for strengthening the legalization of abortion in Minnesota, creating protections for abortion providers, and terminating the state funding of predatory anti-abortion centers or “Crisis Pregnancy Centers”. It is a direct result of this organizing and mass protest that abortion rights are now stronger than ever in Minnesota. Even so, the Minnesota Abortion Action Committee continues to demand more of those in power— more clinics, more funding, more restrictions on institutions operated by the Christian Right to deny individuals information and decision making power about their pregnancies— because the stronger women’s and reproductive rights are in Minnesota, the more people in the Midwest can access reproductive healthcare.

It is grassroots efforts, just like Reproductive Justice Actions - Milwaukee’s and MN Abortion Action Committee, that has shown politicians across the country that the people want access to safe and legal abortion and they want it now! As history has shown us, we cannot trust politicians to protect our fight for bodily autonomy no matter what side they are on. They have failed us, they had 50 years to create solid laws around legal abortion and now we are left scrambling. It will take more than politicians to save us, we have to continue to show up in these streets and demand our voices be heard. It is the power of the people who advocated for our reproductive rights in the first place and we will do it again.

Reproductive Justice Action - Milwaukee is calling on the people and activists around the country to mobilize on June 24, the day that marks a year since the overturning of Roe. They are calling for a National Day of Action in the hopes of mobilizing women and others to continue the process of building a nationwide grassroots movement to restore national abortion access. The demands of this day of action include: reinstate Roe v. Wade and codify abortion access, federal funding for reproductive health and women's health, and public access to contraceptives and menstrual products for all.

Reproductive Justice Action - Milwaukee will be hosting their event on June 24th at 12:00pm at Dontre Hamilton/Red Arrow Park in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Join MN Abortion Action Committee at their event on June 24th at 1pm, located at Humphrey Circle in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

We’ve seen the effort it took to get Roe established, but Roe is the floor when it comes to the possibilities of what reproductive healthcare can be. We must build a better and more sustainable system for our communities. With a nationwide grassroots movement we can continue to fight back and achieve nationwide legal abortion access on demand!

#UnitedStates #RoeVWade #AbortionRights

div id="sharingbuttons.io"/div]]>

It is grassroots efforts, just like Reproductive Justice Actions – Milwaukee’s and MN Abortion Action Committee, that has shown politicians across the country that the people want access to safe and legal abortion and they want it now!

Reproductive Justice Action – Milwaukee is calling on the people and activists around the country to mobilize on June 24, the day that marks a year since the overturning of Roe.

Reproductive Justice Action – Milwaukee will be hosting their event on June 24th at 12:00pm at Dontre Hamilton/Red Arrow Park in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

<![CDATA[Milwaukee press conference urging protests on anniversary of overturning of Roe")

Milwaukee, WI - At a press conference on the evening of April 30, members of Reproductive Justice Action Milwaukee (RJAM) and Freedom Road Socialist Organization (FRSO) addressed local media with a call to action for people in Milwaukee and around the country to mobilize on June 24, the day that marks a year since the overturning of Roe.

!--more--

Haley McNeil, the logistics and finance chair for RJAM, said that the Dobbs decision, “left the majority of the country without access to legal abortion care due to trigger laws. The people most impacted by this are working-class Black and brown people. Without access to legal abortion and other reproductive health services, marginalized communities are at greater risk of mortality due to complications; where Black women are 3x more likely to die during child labor."

"Throughout the past ten months, RJA-M has built a movement in Milwaukee County to fight for safe, sustainable communities and reproductive justice by taking it to the streets. We’ve seen that we cannot rely on voting alone, as electeds rarely follow through on their campaign promises. That's why we need to continue to be out there fighting,” McNeil said. "However, we can show up in the streets all we want, but nothing concrete will come if we are not organized in our efforts and direct with our demands."

McNeil continued, "We're calling for this national day of action in the hopes of building a nationwide grassroots movement to restore national abortion access. The demands of this day of action are: one, reinstate Row v. Wade and codify abortion access; two, federal funding for reproductive health and women's health; and three, public access to contraceptives and menstrual products for all. Additionally, RJAM is calling for the overturning of state statute 940.04."

RJAM has done a number of things already in their overall fight to win back abortion rights for people in Milwaukee and all across Wisconsin. The first struggle ended in a ballot initiative that asked the residents of Milwaukee County whether they wanted to see the state's abortion ban overturned. The results were overwhelmingly in favor of striking the law from the books, with 76% of voters voting 'Yes'.

In that same election, a new Wisconsin Supreme Court justice was elected, flipping the court from a conservative to a more liberal majority and inspiring hope for legal changes. The electoral result represents the will of the broader state population, as one of the main things incoming Justice Janet Protasiewicz ran on was abortion. Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul is currently pushing forward a lawsuit that, if successful, would result in the overturning of 940.04 and therefore would legally end the abortion ban in Wisconsin. This result, however, is not guaranteed.

"Whatever the result of the court case, we will continue to be in the streets and fighting for reproductive justice for people in this city and all over Wisconsin," said Lauren Forbush, a leader with RJAM.

"While it's good that the case headed by AG Kaul is moving forward, we were never hedging all our bets on the outcomes of this bureaucratic process," said Ryan Hamann, a leader with FRSO. "The fact is that the people and the people alone are the motive force in the making of history."

RJAM has since moved on to demanding that Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm sign a binding pledge to not prosecute anyone giving or receiving an abortion within his jurisdiction. Chisholm offered his verbal support for such a course of action months ago, but in follow-up meetings and communications with RJAM, he has come up with every excuse to not put it in writing.

Additionally, the organization is fighting for another resolution through the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors that would provide funding for Milwaukee County employees to seek reproductive healthcare outside the state. This comes after a similar resolution was passed in Dane County where Madison, the state's capitol, resides.

As the conditions in Wisconsin begin to shift in favor of the movement for legal abortion, RJAM is committed to the long struggle, not just for abortion but for expanded reproductive healthcare, a broad category that includes things ranging from universal access to contraceptives to the availability of labor and delivery units in all communities and more.

“We’ve seen the effort it took to get Roe established, but Roe is the floor when it comes to the possibilities of what reproductive healthcare can be.
<![CDATA[Milwaukee, WI - On April 15, dozens of activists and supporters heeded the call of Reproductive Justice Action - Milwaukee (RJAM) to gather in protest outside the Milwaukee County Courthouse in opposition to the attacks against mifepristone, a pill used in a two-pill process to have an abortion without surgery. This was only one of many protests to occur since news of a decision by Matthew Kacsmaryk, a U.S. District judge based out of Amarillo, Texas, to suspend the FDA approval of the medication.

!--more--

“These anti-choice politicians are spreading blatant lies about the safety of a medication that has been scientifically proven to be safer than Viagra, birth control, or pregnancy. But we know that it’s not about safety at all; it’s about trying to control people’s bodies,” said Carly Klein of RJAM. “Today we say enough is enough. We want access to abortion, and we want it now!”

Throughout the course of the rally, people chanted slogans like “All power to the people!” and “My body, my choice!” The location of the rally outside the courthouse was chosen by RJAM because District Attorney John Chisholm is the target of their on-going campaign to make Milwaukee an abortion sanctuary.

“76% of Milwaukee County residents made clear their support when they voted ‘Yes’ to having access to safe and legal abortion in this past election. We won’t stop fighting for legal protections for abortion in our county until DA Chisholm signs on the dotted line!” said Klein, referring to the current struggle for the DA to sign on to a pledge to not prosecute people receiving and providing abortions in Milwaukee County.

Other organizations that turned out to support the action included the community powerhouse Milwaukee Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression and the Freedom Road Socialist Organization (FRSO).

“The history and continuation of policing pregnant people, abortion providers, and their supporters will be resolved through grassroots actions,” said Lo Cross, one of the co-chairs of the Milwaukee Alliance. “We’re protecting any way that working class people are able to make decisions about their own bodies. The officials of this county need to show us through their actions that they are here to protect the most vulnerable.”

“People are dying at the hands of a few politicians. We will not sit back and watch while our bodily autonomy is stripped away. We know this is another attempt to push forward the reactionary agenda and we will not stand for this,” said Lauren Forbush, a leader with RJAM and a member of FRSO. “We cannot have full reproductive justice without socialism. RJAM is now a coalition member of both the Coalition to March on the RNC in 2024 (in Milwaukee) and the Coalition to March on the DNC (in Chicago) the same summer, the first in July and the second in August.

!--more--

“We want to put on display for the country that Chicago is having a new day, and we want to invite everybody in the movements around the country to come and add their voices together with us,” said Joe Iosbaker, coalition organizer and long-time community and labor activist in Chicago.

The Coalition to March on the DNC includes organizations like the Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression, Black Lives Matter Chicago, Students for a Democratic Society at UIC, and many more. RJAM, and the rest of the coalition, is looking forward to using this opportunity to remind the Democratic Party that their actions speak louder than their words. For too long have the people been lied to through campaign promises and then gaslighted once these promises disappear as their rights continue to be stripped away.

“The crisis in democracy at this point is deeper and broader, involving everything from the continued struggle that we’ve been waging around community control of the police, and meanwhile nothing’s been done about the George Floyd bill in Congress,” said Shasta Jones of the Chicago Alliance, reading a prepared statement from Frank Chapman, Executive Director of the National Alliance.

“With the attack on abortion rights, there has been a great leap backwards in the rights of women; there are also attacks on the LGBTQ community. There has been no progress in Washington on the rights of immigrants. There is also a renewed struggle for the rights of workers to organize and to strike to change the deplorable conditions under which they work,” Jones continued. “This includes the drive for new unionization, both at Starbucks and Amazon. Also, Biden betrayed the railroad workers unions in their demands for safe working conditions.”

Jones went on: “Finally, we have to march against war. What happened to Biden’s Build Back Better legislation? What happened to the great renewal we were supposed to have after the COVID epidemic? It’s been gobbled up by the war in Ukraine, which is a proxy war that our country is waging with Russia. We’ll march against the U.S.-backed occupation of Palestine, against the U.S. military aid to the dictatorship in the Philippines, and to oppose U.S. threats of war with China. All of these issues have matured and gotten deeper, and so we have to address those issues with the People’s Agenda.”

Lauren Forbush, a leader with Reproductive Justice Action Milwaukee, commented after the press conference, urging others to follow their lead.

“The coalition is just kicking off and planning is in the early stages, but RJAM is calling on reproductive rights activists throughout the country to show up in the streets of both Milwaukee and Chicago to make sure the Republicans and Democrats hear loud and clear that the movement will not stop until the people have safe and legal abortion access and all other reproductive health services!”

#MilwaukeeWI #InJusticeSystem #AbortionRights #reproductiveJustice #DNC2024

div id="sharingbuttons.io"/div]]>

Attendee TJ McGee commented, “Banning abortion doesn’t get rid of it. People will be doing it illegally.” When asked about the current state of political affairs, McGee replied, “I’ve been stressed. They are trying to take our healthcare away. I don’t want to see anything happen to my friends.”

Others, like Aslan Rameriez-Bazzoti and Tyler McGee echoed similar sentiments about their frustration with the American capitalist government. Tyler McGee criticized, “I think it’s batshit insane that these old men politicians are trying to tell them what to do. The fact Roe v. Wade was overturned is insane.”

<![CDATA[Minnesotans stand up for abortion rights.")

Minneapolis, MN - On Saturday, April 15, 30 protesters gathered to oppose a recent Texas court ruling that threatens to revoke FDA approval for mifepristone, a drug used in more than half of U.S. abortions. The protest was organized by the Minnesota Abortion Action Committee (MNAAC) in response to the call put out by Women’s March for a National Day of Action defending medical abortion.

!--more--

MNAAC member Sarah Murphy was first to address the crowd, as she explained the impact of the recent ruling, “Currently, mifepristone is still available in the 17 states where abortion is still legal. However, these lawsuits have temporarily banned the distribution of abortion pills by mail. This is just one more barrier between pregnant people and essential healthcare.”

Affirming MNAAC’s commitment to fighting for abortion access in Minnesota and beyond, Murphy continued, “Every single state that borders Minnesota has some kind of abortion ban. People who find themselves with an unwanted pregnancy are forced to travel several hundred miles to receive healthcare which should be a basic human right. It should be free, safe, and without shame! And it should be available by mail!”

Jay Belsito, an organizer with Unrestrict Minnesota, spoke to the necessity of strengthening legal protections for abortion in Minnesota under their sponsored bills, such as the Reproductive Freedom Codification Act, the Reproductive Freedom Defense Act, and the Positive Pregnancies Support Act, which would repeal any remaining abortion restrictions in Minnesota, enact legal protections for abortion providers, and end the state funding of crisis pregnancy centers, otherwise known as anti-abortion Centers.

Other speakers included the Minnesota Immigrant Rights Action Committee (MIRAC), the Climate Justice Committee, University of Minnesota Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), and the Anti-War Committee, who all extended their support to the fight for medical abortion and reproductive rights.

MNAAC member Autumn Lake affirmed this spirit of solidarity across the people’s movements, as she stated, “Our struggle for women's and reproductive rights is a critical part of the larger fight against injustice everywhere.
A people's mandate: Milwaukee County overwhelmingly demands an end to state abortion ban

Many organizations poured energy into the extremely important State Supreme Court election, which had reproductive rights, workers' rights, and fair electoral maps taking center stage. RJAM focused on getting voters to the polls by encouraging Milwaukee people to vote in favor of an advisory referendum, polling Milwaukee County’s opinion on overturning the state's 1849 abortion ban.

!--more--

RJAM was able to win this advisory referendum after picketing county supervisors’ homes over the summer. The referendum saw an overwhelming 76% of voters in Milwaukee County in favor of overturning the abortion ban. The same advisory referendum in Dane County (where Wisconsin's capitol city of Madison resides) had 85% for overturning the ban.

Milwaukee and Dane County make up over 25% of the entire population of Wisconsin. What this demonstrates is that there's a people's mandate for the elimination of Wisconsin State Statue 940.04 -the abortion ban. These non-binding referendums are vital to continuing pressure on the Wisconsin legislature to overturn the ban and provide legal and safe abortions.

RJAM canvassed 1000 homes in the Milwaukee community, specifically focusing on areas with the lowest voter turnout. Spring elections in Wisconsin usually have very low voter turnout, but due to the high stakes and various canvassing efforts, this election had record breaking voter turnout for a spring election in Wisconsin.

These referendum results and a new progressive justice elected to Wisconsin Supreme Court lead to favorable conditions to the fight for legal abortion access. These are fake clinics that lie to those seeking abortion, potentially endangering them through misinformation about their pregnancy.

Freedom Road Socialist Organization (FRSO) member Lauren Pineiro spoke at the protest, “Despite how unpopular abortion bans are, Ron DeSantis continues to push forward attacks on bodily autonomy as a part of his right-wing, billionaire-funded agenda. Yet, the people of Florida are the ones who hold the power and, as we can see by today’s protest, we will continue to fight back against any and all attacks on the women’s, LBGTQ and reproductive rights movements.”

On Monday April 3, in an act of political repression, 11 Occupy Tally protesters were arrested in Tallahassee trying to stand up against the six-week abortion ban.
<![CDATA[People rally for abortion access in downtown Milwaukee ahead of an important bal")

Milwaukee, WI - On April 1, activists, medical providers, community members and local politicians rallied in Red Arrow Park encouraging the people of Milwaukee to vote in a pivotal election for the state of Wisconsin. The community joined together, in the bitter wind, with a common goal in mind: to end the statewide ban on abortion.

!--more--

Milwaukee showed up loud and proud with pickets reading, “Repeal 940.04” and “Abortion is not a crime,” accompanied by live music and speakers. Local organizations provided information on how to access abortion services and the ways the people can get involved in the fight for reproductive rights.

For the activists in Reproductive Justice Action-Milwaukee (RJAM), the spring election ballot is a testament to the effectiveness of grassroots organizing. Shortly after RJAM formed, in June of 2022, they started demanding that the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors add an advisory referendum to the fall ballot. When the County Board Supervisors voted against it, RJAM took to the streets and picketed the houses of each supervisor who was in opposition of the referendum.

“We spent our summer showing up at their houses, with pickets and megaphones. We chanted while banging pots and pans,” said Carly Klein, of RJAM. “We were so loud they would call the cops on us, but it was worth it. Now, thanks to grassroots organizing, the people of Milwaukee have an opportunity to voice their opinions on abortion access.”

RJAM hopes to use the results of the advisory referendum as momentum for their current campaign, having Milwaukee County’s District Attorney John Chisholm, sign a pledge stating he will not prosecute abortion cases. Chisholm had made a verbal statement, shortly after the overturning of Roe, that he would not prosecute abortion cases. RJAM wants to hold him accountable and put his promises down in writing.

“Right now, there is nothing binding Chisholm to his word, and he's been hesitant to sign the pledge," Klein said. "We're going to hold his feet to the fire until he signs!"

Members of RJAM worked to gather petition signatures from attendees at the rally.
