#PortlandOR #OR #ImmigrantRights #PDXCD #DerechosDeLosInmigrantes #Trump #NationalGuard #GuardiaNacional

div id="sharingbuttons.io"/div]]>

The deployment of the National Guard was announced one week after the city announced a citation to the ICE facility for violating its land use agreement by holding detainees over the 12-hour limit, a move pushed for by local activists, as a part of a campaign to revoke the ICE permit and shut down the facility.

After the announcement of the deployment of the national guard, numbers swelled at the ICE facility, with large protests led by Portland Contra Las Deportaciones (PDXCD), a Portland immigrant rights organization that led weekly protests of over 400 people at the ICE facility, in which they blocked the driveway and continuing to demand the revocation of the permit.

The continuous protests were despite Oregon officials like Senator Jeff Merkley telling Portlanders “don’t take the bait” and to stay away from the ICE facility or else risk further crackdown.

Organizers with PDXCD rejected this perspective and met Trump with a fight. “We don’t hide from the Trump administration when they try to carry out their xenophobic and racist agenda in the streets of our city using the military,” said organizer Blaire Glennon.

Throughout the weeks of protests after the announcement of the deployment, DHS arrested many protesters. The highest number of arrests occurred on October 4, in which the main organizers of the protest were arrested during the first 15 minutes of the action, in a seemingly targeted arrest.

In the court proceedings, it was later revealed the National Guard was present in the ICE facility on October 4, despite a temporary restraining order placed against the deployment in court.

Organizers leaped into action to protect protesters, creating a legal defense team to fight back against repression, while not allowing it to stop them from protesting at the ICE facility.

While protests raged on at the ICE facility, a battle was waged in court against the deployment of the National Guard. The court case proceeded in relation to the protests at the ICE facility, as more media attention was gathered by the protesters showing the abuse of DHS and ICE, and the fearlessness of the protesters, the courts moved to more firmly oppose the deployment, leading to the final permanent ban.

“It is due to the people and the people alone that the National Guard deployment was blocked. Through keeping up the pressure on the government with protests in which we would not back down, we showed them it would be a mistake to send the guard to Portland,” said organizer Emily Brown.

The Trump administration is appealing the permanent ban, and the court case is expected to continue forward.

Locally, protesters continue to push city officials; PDXCD is planning a protest at city hall this Wednesday, November 19, to rally against a “Detention Facility Impact Fee” ordinance proposed by Portland Councilors Angelita Morillo and Mitch Green to find private owners of detention facilities for any costs the city incurs as a result of protests in the surrounding area. Organizers say this does not meet the demands raised by Portlanders and demand the full revocation of the permit and for the facility to be shut down. 60 days have passed since the initial citation was issued and so per city code the revocation process to revoke the permit can begin.

Protesters plan to meet each new development by mobilizing into the streets.

#PortlandOR #OR #ImmigrantRights #PDXCD #NationalGuard #Trump

div id="sharingbuttons.io"/div]]>

The fare increases come despite overwhelming opposition from transit riders. They were proposed amid a sharp increase in police and National Guard in the transit system, instituted by Governor Kathy Hochul and New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

MTA CEO Janno Lieber has also been pushing for aggressive fare evasion crackdown, spending millions of dollars on turnstile spikes, private security, and locking emergency exit doors which pose a significant risk in case of fire. Many chapters across the country participated, but for students in New Orleans this action meant more than just solidarity. Governor Jeff Landry’s pending deployment of the National Guard looms over Louisiana’s major cities including New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Shreveport and Alexandria.

At Tulane, Students for a Democratic society organized a speakout to stand in solidarity with Chicago. Protesters chanted “New Orleans isn’t licking boots! No Trump, no troops!” condemning Jeff Landry’s decision to call the National Guard in their city and demanding Tulane not comply with ICE.

“An increasingly powerful billionaire class is consolidating power at the expense of us all,” said Tulane law student Andreas Saint-Rouge “We must remember now more than ever to organize. We must stand by Chicago and all those affected by the militarized henchmen of Donald Trump.”

Afterwards, Tulane students joined their sister chapter at another SDS rally in front of Loyola University New Orleans. There, over 25 Loyola students rallied chanting, “No troops on the ground, no bombs in the air! U.S. out of everywhere!” and “From NOLA to Chicago, Trump's troops have got to go!”

Nat Schrodt, a Loyola student and member of SDS, connected the day of solidarity with Chicago to the local struggle saying, “Two weeks ago, Governor Jeff Landry requested the activation of Louisiana National Guard to Shreveport, New Orleans and Baton Rouge under the pretense of keeping down crime.” The crowd yelled “shame” in response as Schrodt continued, “We know this is a ruse, a gross step in the Trump regime's authoritarian playbook. But come as they may, we will be ready, organized, and prepared to stand against this shit.” The crowd responded with an eruption of applause.

“The fightback is growing and winning. In Los Angeles and Chicago, the people ran ICE out of their communities!
New Orleans, LA – On October 16, Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) hosted a “No Troops, No Trump” emergency rally and spoke out at both Tulane University and at Loyola University New Orleans in response to a national day of action called by National SDS.

The day of action was one meant to show solidarity with the people of Chicago.

Just last night, students at Loyola kicked TPUSA, backed by the entire GOP, off of campus,” said Carson Cruse, speaking for the Freedom Road Socialist Organization. “That’s what we do when we fight back. We dare to win!”

Saturday’s protest was one of 2700 actions planned for No Kings day across the United States.

!--more--

The rally was one of New Orleans’ largest ever, with the people chanting “No kings, no Trump!” Indivisible also added the demand for “No troops” into the branding of the event, to fight back against Trump and Landry’s plan to send the National Guard to cities across Louisiana including New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Shreveport and Alexandria.

Before the action, Indivisible organizers encouraged demonstrators to descend down to the Great Lawn from every direction, taking the Greenway as a chance to march in contingents and affiliate groups. Students for a Democratic Society chapters from Tulane and Loyola Universities led a student contingent of 30 people to the rally, carrying a banner that read, “Dare to struggle, dare to win!” A Palestine contingent stood together waving flags. Some contingents showed up in costume. A group of women showed up in hairnetted wigs and red aprons labeled “Aunt Tifa” and various inflatable costumes from frogs to crawfish littered the crowd.

Grassroots organizations tabled around the perimeter to get attendees involved in the broader movement.

Speakers included immigrant rights activists and ACLU representatives, in addition to cultural performances. Notably, among policing and attacks on democracy, Palestine was one of the issues in the forefront. Hakm Murad of the Palestinian Youth Movement challenged the crowd, saying the resistance against Donald Trump needs to stand in solidarity with people across the world oppressed by U.S. intervention.

“Palestine is a litmus test for all of us! Our enemy is not just one president, we need to take down the whole empire,” Murad said to applause.

As the program for the rally ended, many in the crowd wanted to keep the action going. Activists in the Freedom Road Socialist Organization (FRSO) led chants and slowly exited the field, drawing a crowd of about 150 people back down the Greenway chanting, “Trump says get back, we say fight back!” and “Hands off Palestine, hands off Venezuela!”

The impromptu march landed under the North Claiborne bridge, where the architecture amplified the chants of the crowd and the speakers.

“Trump is a good-for-nothing billionaire that gets rich off of our exploitation. Being president is the most lucrative gig he’s had yet. Trump has no business running this country and no business telling us what the hell to do. We run this, not Trump,” declared Toni Mar, member of the FRSO.

“Because of the steadfast resistance of the Palestinian people and their supporters, the tide is turning against Israel, and more importantly against all U.S. imperialism,” stated Cristine Farah, member of New Orleans Stop Helping Israel’s Ports (NOSHIP).
<![CDATA[Armed agents over crowd of protesters in Portland, Oregon

Portland, OR - On October 12, thousands of protesters convened in front of the Portland ICE Facility in the pouring rain to stand against the deployment of the National Guard and demanding the permit of the ICE Facility to be revoked.

A protest was called by Portland Contra Las Deportaciones (PDXCD) in collaboration with Portland for Palestine (P4P), the Freedom Road Socialist Organization (FRSO), Revoke the ICE Permit (RIP) and Tesla Takedown PDX.

!--more--

Organizers like Cass Cano, detained last week by ICE and DHS while protesting, spoke out against the repression faced by protesters, as well as ICE’s continued terrorization of immigrants, stating, “They detained my comrades and are hoping we would be scared and stop fighting, but we won’t stop until the facility is shut down and ICE is out of Portland.”

The protest was joyful and many in attendance were in costumes such as inflatable animal suits. Unpresidented Brass Band, a Portland protest staple, was in attendance in banana suits. The group marched to the ICE Facility and blocked the driveway, while the band played music across the street. As has been the case for several months, DHS and ICE periodically came out and pushed protesters and shot them with chemical munitions.

This protest marked a distinct change in Portland Police Bureau's response, as the police came out and shoved protesters with their bikes, threatening arrest and essentially assisting ICE with crowd control.

At the same time, PDX World Naked Bike Ride began an emergency ride in downtown Portland. The World Naked Bike Ride puts on an annual protest ride each summer by bikers, many without clothing, “calling attention to oil dependency, cyclist vulnerability, and the beauty of body freedom.”

Organizers of World Naked Bike Ride called for an emergency ride in response to Trump’s attacks on Portland and organizers with PDXCD coordinated with them to link up their protests.

At 4:15 p.m. just as DHS and ICE were coming out of the facility to push back protesters, the World Naked Bike Ride arrived at the facility. The crowd was ecstatic as thousands of bicyclists rode through, filling the streets with people. As the band played people stopped, got off their bikes, joined in with chants and danced to the band. ICE and DHS retreated into their building as there were too many people in the streets for them to push protesters back. Bikers with no clothing got off their bikes and pushed back ICE and DHS and were shot in their stomachs with pepper balls.

As the crowd thinned out while the bikers continued along their ride, ICE and DHS came out again and attacked protesters more aggressively than before. They detained five people, chasing one protester into the band. The officers subsequently maced the band, tackled a band member and dragged them into the detention facility. All of those detained were held overnight and transferred across state lines to Clark County Jail in Washington.

Organizers from the coalition of groups that organized the event vowed to keep coming out, demanding the charges be dropped and that the city revokes the permit for the ICE facility and shuts it down.

“Every time ICE and DHS attack us, they think they’re going to shut us down, but in reality they just bring more people to our side. We won’t be silent while immigrants’ rights protesters are being brutalized and immigrants are being kidnapped in Portland. We’ll be out here again and again until we shut down this facility,” said organizer Cole Dunahugh.

#PortlandOR #OR #ImmigrantRights #ICE #NationalGuard #Trump #Feature

div id="sharingbuttons.io"/div]]>

<![CDATA[Frank Chapman speaking at funds, not feds protest.

Chicago, IL - Over 100 Chicagoans rallied outside the offices of Google and Valor Equity Partners in the West Loop on Saturday, October 11, demanding funding for public services through increasing taxes on large corporations, removing vacant police officer positions, and for all federal agents to leave the city.

!--more--

“Billionaires are standing in the way of working families being able to afford healthcare, to put food on the table, to have a home, to put their kids through school,” explained Rocio Garcia, senior organizing director of the Grassroots Collaborative.

The protest was organized by the People's Unity Platform, a coalition led by the Grassroots Collaborative, and the Public Health and Safety (PHS) Coalition. Both coalitions are looking to connect their fight around the Chicago city budget to the broader fight against Trump’s agenda of disinvestment and military occupation as they mount pressure on city council representatives to pass a budget that invests in real safety for Chicagoans.

People from community organizations, youth groups and unions condemned the Trump administration’s attacks on working and oppressed people. They also condemned the class of monopoly capitalists who profit off budget cuts and repression.

“We’re not just dealing with an increasingly authoritarian government. We're dealing with a plutocracy. That's government by the rich, for the rich,” said Jackson Potter, vice president of the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU).

“Black people know that feds and police do not make us safer,” said Maurice Woodard with Equity And Transformation (EAT), countering the lies Trump is using to justify his war on Chicago.

“For many generations they have taken us from our homes, abused our communities and said ‘you’re the problem’ instead of investing in our communities, which we have shown has worked,” Woodard continued.

“They keep telling us there is no money but we know where it is. The money is with the corporations and the rich,” said 33rd Ward Alderperson Rossana Rodriguez Sanchez. “The money is also in the police department which has vacancies it will never be able to fill while we are wondering how we're going to fund positions for nurses, social workers and clinicians.”

She was one of several progressive alderpersons who spoke at the rally, including Byron Sigcho Lopez (26th Ward) and Anthony Joel Quezada (35th Ward). All the speakers called for higher taxes on the rich and for public funds to go toward community services instead of repression.

“Let’s shut some shit down,” said Frank Chapman, executive director of the National Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression (NAARPR). He called for protests to take place in more consequential locations, including airports and highways, to force those in power to invest in communities and not military occupation.

“Every time we get something it's because we fought to get it. Every time we get something it's because we took power from them and gave it to ourselves,” Chapman said. “The way we take power is by using the power we got.
<![CDATA[Minneapolis, MN - On Thursday, October 2, organizers from four cities reported on the government’s attempt to occupy their cities and streets since June and how people are continuing to resist and win.

!--more--

In his opening remarks at this virtual panel, Frank Chapman, executive director of NAARPR and field organizer for Chicago Alliance, made it clear that, “This government isn’t going to do anything to deal with the health and socioeconomic needs of its people. They have instead brought upon an era of repression by trying to deny our right to protest.”

In the District of Columbia, movement lawyer Paige White, as well as organizers Merawi Gerima and Kristen Bonner, said that protesting is precisely what they have been doing. Since Trump’s occupation of the country’s capital, activists and community members have stayed active in the streets despite violent harassment and intimidation by law enforcement. Their protests are enlivened by chants like, “Down with occupation; down with deportation” and “Chinga la migra, fuck the police, fuck ICE!”

In New Orleans and Los Angeles where detentions have been ramping up since the summer, organizers, Alan Chavoya and Vonne Crandall reported that federal agents are acting with impunity. Since the May 2025 re-authorization of sweeping expedited removal, many people, after being detained by ICE, have had their cases dismissed and are deported without ever seeing an immigration judge.

Inhumane tactics like this aren’t just happening in LA and New Orleans. Kobi Guillory, a teacher and co-chair for the Chicago Alliance spoke on the September Chicago raids where heavily armed federal agents literally ripped homes and families apart.

The racist right is bolder than ever under Trump. But that does not make them stronger.
Washington, D.C. – Over 100 activists, faith leaders and immigrants mobilized in the early morning of October 8 at City Hall in downtown DC, to call for an end to Mayor Muriel Bowser’s cooperation with ICE and the Trump administration’s racist occupation.

This direct action by Families Not Feds, a campaign led by Colectivo de Familias Migrantes and supported by DC Against the Trump Agenda, sought to expose Bowser’s continued cooperation with ICE and pressure her to cease further coordination and use her political power to fight for DC.

The organizers conducted a press conference outside the chambers of the Committee of the Whole, where they heard from community members affected by the surge of ICE and federal police forces in DC.

Portland continues to resist Trump's National Guard deployment: 5 organizers arrested

<![CDATA[Confrontation at Portland ICE facility.

Portland, OR - On Saturday, October 4, 400 people rallied at Elizabeth Caruthers Park and marched to the ICE detention center in Southwest Portland.

The event was organized by Portland Contra las Deportaciones (PDXCD), Portland for Palestine (P4P), Tesla Takedown, and Freedom Road Socialist Organization (FRSO) to protest against the imminent deployment of National Guard troops into the streets of Portland. The troops are supposed to protect the Portland ICE facility.

!--more--

The rally at Elizabeth Caruthers Park began at noon and speakers from each organization talked about the need to be out in the streets resisting ICE, as opposed to the cowardly “don’t take the bait” rhetoric peddled by city and state officials such as Portland Mayor Keith Wilson and Governor Tina Kotek.

“Trump is sending in the army because he is scared, because what we are doing here is working. As oppression intensifies, so too does resistance,” said Isabella Shepard of P4P, “When ICE and Trump escalate, our numbers increase, because we understand that it is critical now more than ever that we show up for our immigrant communities, precisely because they are under attack right now.”

After the crowd had swelled in size, they began to march through the streets towards the ICE facility, chanting “No hate, no fear, immigrants are welcome here!” and “Our street, our fight!”

The crowd reached ICE around 1 p.m. and occupied the streets in front of the building. At previous protests of this magnitude, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the main force guarding the facility, has been less aggressive because protesters are able to stay safe in numbers. DHS forces occasionally storm through the front gate to clear the way for incoming and outgoing ICE and DHS vehicles, but they don't often make arrests.

October 4 marked a change in demeanor. Within 20 minutes of the crowd arriving, DHS came through the facility’s front gate and intentionally targeted and assaulted event organizers, arresting five and imprisoning them in the facility. One was a member of P4P, Lora Wilde. The other four were members of PDXCD: Holly Brown, Cass Cano, Elijah Thahir and Leticia Navarro.

After this attack, the remaining organizers announced their intent to continue occupying the streets until their comrades were released from custody. The crowd of hundreds also opted to stay. Over the course of the next eight hours, DHS directly attacked the crowd half a dozen more times and arrested at least four more people. One such attack, around 8:30 p.m., had DHS extensively use tear gas and flashbangs to push protesters several blocks away from ICE, endangering hundreds of people living in the apartments near the facility.

Three organizers and one unaffiliated protester were released from the ICE facility that day. The remaining organizers, Elijah Thahir and Leticia Navarro, were instead transferred 30 miles north to an out-of-county facility, Columbia County Jail in Saint Helens, Oregon. They were transferred around 1 a.m. on October 5, after just under 12 hours, the maximum amount of time ICE could legally detain them.

Members of PDXCD and P4P gathered at Columbia County Jail at 2 p.m. on October 5, for a press conference where they demanded the immediate release of Thahir and Navarro, as well as the dropping of all charges levied against the five organizers.

Holly Brown, one of the organizers who was detained, described the situation inside the facility, “There are harsh fluorescent lights, it's just concrete and meta.” Brown continued, “And we know that someone was detained in there for 47 days. And that is why we’re advocating for that facility to be shut down.”

Just before 7 p.m. on October 5, Leticia Navarro was released from custody. Elijah Thahir followed at 11 p.m., over 34 hours after being arrested. Thahir and Navarro have yet to be charged with any crimes, but like the other three organizers they are ready and willing to fight the charges when they do come. They have the full backing of their communities and organizations behind them.

#PortlandOR #OR #ImmigrantRights #Trump #NationalGuard #Feature

div id="sharingbuttons.io"/div]]>

Chicagoans mobilize to oppose Trump’s threats of military occupation

<![CDATA[Chicago march against Trump's threats to send in troops.

Chicago, IL - On September 30, 1500 Chicagoans marched down Magnificent Mile to protest Trump’s threats of using the city as a military training ground. This past week has seen the effects of Operation Blitz in full force, with heavy presence of ICE and other federal agents conducting deportations. Trump’s speech to top U.S. generals the same day showed he intends to escalate the federal occupation with the military.

!--more--

Ramped up repression means ramped up fight back!

“They are dehumanizing our communities. They are inflicting terror on our families. Separating families. Let’s not forget that when ICE murdered Silverio \[Villegas-Gonzalez\], the only thing they said was that he was an illegal. They did not say that he was a father, a worker, and a member of our community,” said Gabriela Hernandezm of Casa DuPage, speaking to the crowd in Spanish.

Hernandez also stated, “We are here today, protesting again, to tell this administration that the Mexicano/Latino community are not criminals. It is the time for us to speak firmly and clearly about these things, because if not, they will come to silence all of us.”

Reverend Jonathan Brooks of Live Free Illinois stated, “ICE has been accused of violating a consent decree meant to protect families from warrantless arrests. This disregard for legal protections tears at the very fabric of trust in our democracy.”

Brooks continued, “A federal judge has already ruled that targeting deportations based on political speech is unconstitutional - yet ICE continues to act as if it is above the law. Let’s be clear: this is not about safety. This is about authoritarianism, fear and control. Our communities do not need to be occupied - they need to be respected.”

“We saw over the weekend how ICE agents shamelessly occupied the streets of downtown and detained fellow residents. Over in Broadview, protesters and journalists are being shot at, teargassed, and brutalized. In a raid in South Shore just last night, ICE, FBI and other federal agents ransacked 70 apartments, knocked down doors, threw stuff all over the place, and detained 50 people - including Black U.S. citizens,” said Angel Naranjo of the Freedom Road Socialist Organization (FRSO).

Naranjo continued, “Trump hates Chicago because he is a racist reactionary who represents the class enemy - the monopoly capitalist class - and this enemy can’t stand us. Trump and his lackeys are mad and ramping up their attacks - and so we’re ramping up our fight back! The masses of our city - and in particular the Black, Chicano/Latino, immigrant and working-class masses - are putting up a just fight against this rotten imperialist system that is tearing apart our families and occupying our neighborhoods! We are building a movement to stop the raids, and our demand is legalization for all undocumented people.”

“What we need right now is solidarity. The solidarity that Fred Hampton talked about. The solidarity that Assata Shakur deserved. We need solidarity with federal workers, with day laborers, teachers, nurses, warehouse workers. We need solidarity across unions. All public unions, trade unions, across communities. We need the solidarity of all working people,” said Jill Manrique of Chicago Jobs for Justice.

A member of Students for Justice in Palestine - Chicago (SJP Chicago) ended the program by reminding the crowd, ”The kidnapping of families and workers, and the occupations of our city’s streets is just an escalation of policy that has been standard in this nation since its inception.”

After the program, Chicagoans loudly marched down Magnificent Mile, one of the biggest commercial corridors in the city. Protests ended at the Water Tower, finishing with Assata’s “It is our duty to fight for our freedom” chant.

Enemies from within

“We should use some of these dangerous cities as training grounds for our military. Cuz we’re going into Chicago very soon,” said Trump in front of the U.S. top military leaders, stating that there were enemies from within that the military must apprehend.

Trump's deployment of federal forces is an escalation of the ongoing occupation of Black, Chicano/Latino, and working-class communities by the Chicago Police Department (CPD). Trump aims to ramp up this oppression and squash the working and oppressed people who are getting organized to fight back against this. From the 2020 George Floyd rebellion, to the 2025 LA uprising against ICE, working and oppressed are wanting and mobilizing for an end to this terror. The ruling class of this country knows this, and is ramping to continue its grip of oppressed people in this country.

Join the resistance!

This mobilization was called by the Coalition Against the Trump Agenda (CATA), a coalition of over 80 organizations building a united front against the reactionary Trump administration. Sign up to get notified when the next mobilization happens at coalitionagainsttrumpagenda.org

Join the resistance!

Trump has a long oppressive agenda, and we’re here to defeat all of it.

<![CDATA[Washington DC protest against Trump's occupation of the city.

Washington, DC - Before organizers from the DC Against Trump Coalition (DCAT) even finished setting up for their August 23 rally at 14th and U Streets in Northwest Washington DC, community members began spontaneously chanting “Fuck Trump!”

Anti-Trump sentiment has been sky-high in Washington, DC since August 11, when Trump issued an executive order sweeping away the city’s home rule powers, federalizing the Metropolitan Police Department and flooding the city with federal law enforcement and National Guard troops.

!--more--

To capture that sentiment and turn it into action against Trump’s racist occupation, DCAT called a rally at the city’s “curfew zone,” a location where law enforcement targets Black minors found after 8 p.m.

The rally, organized over five days, brought out a multi-national crowd of close to 500 people from all over the city and mainly featured Black and brown speakers from the community who were fed up with Trump’s attacks on Black people and immigrants. A tenant organizer with Stomp Out Slumlords made it plain, shouting “I’m mad about a lot of things. It ain’t just Trump, it’s Mayor Bowser too! And Congress ain’t shit either, cuz all of them scared of Trump.”

The DCAT Coalition formed rapidly in the two weeks since Trump’s executive order, bringing together a dozen organizations such as the DC Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression, Colectivo De Familias Migrantes DC, Palestinian Youth Movement and Metro DC Democratic Socialists of America.

Following examples set by cities like Chicago and Grand Rapids, DCAT’s expressed goal is to pull together the broadest coalition possible of organizations from across the DC metropolitan area, all united to defeat Trump’s racist occupation of DC. A tenant organizer called on churches and pro-immigrant organizations to unite with the movement, saying “the history of Christianity is the history of the persecution of people who stood for something.”

Eventually, the rally flowed into a march down the U Street Corridor, one of the busiest nightlife destinations in the city. Protesters blocked both sides of the street as they chanted “Fuck the police” and “Chinga la migra!” The energy was electric, feeling more like a New Orleans second line than a rally as vent was given to all the pent up anger Washingtonians have been feeling towards Trump. Other sectors of the movement have done a good job of reminding people to be joyful, but this rally showed the importance of linking joy with the righteous rage people have towards Trump and his ruling-class cronies.

As the marchers jammed up the street and flowed past dozens of helpless MPD officers, people in all the establishments on either side of the street began chanting along and running to join the march. “Fuck Donald Trump!” rang out like a unanimous agreement between hundreds of people who for the most part did not know each other but were united in their hatred of Trump’s racist agenda.

At the end of the march route, the crowd dispersed into a mass Cop Watch. Groups of people patrolled the entire corridor, filming and berating the police as they went. One group of officers was caught terrorizing an innocent man. They had a dog searching his car when the cop watchers noticed them and began filming. Seeing the Cop Watchers, the officers covered their faces, let the man go, and fled the scene, as they often do.

DCAT plans to build on their momentum in order to grow the coalition and the resistance against Trump’s occupation.
<![CDATA[Chicago protest against deployment of National Guard and federal law enforcement onto the streets of Washington DC.

Chicago, IL - 150 protesters gathered in Federal Plaza on Thursday to stand up against Trump’s threats of military occupation and demand an end to racist policing. The protest and march that followed were organized by the Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression (CAARPR).

Patricia Williams, one of CAARPR’s co-chairs, opened the rally by reading a letter from the sickbed of Frank Chapman, executive director of the National Alliance (NAARPR).

!--more--

“This day, on August the 14, we are declaring that Donald Trump’s efforts to turn our country into a garrison state under the guise of an unjustified military state will be resisted, not just by Chicago, but by the working and oppressed people of this nation!” Chapman wrote.

Protesters rallied in solidarity with communities in Washington DC, as President Trump’s racist executive order has unleashed hundreds of federal law enforcement officers into Black and brown neighborhoods in the nation’s capital.

Mark Clements is a police torture survivor who was wrongfully convicted of murder when he was 16 years old. Now an activist with the Chicago Torture Justice Center, he connected Trump's attacks on DC to the history of racism in Chicago’s police department.

“The city of Chicago pays billions of dollars for the conduct of these police officers, sending innocent people to prison,” Clements said. “It’s become back-page news - I say that’s a shame!”

“We must stop thinking that we have no power,” he added. “Change is in each and every one of you!”

“There are city councilors, who months ago, were using the exact same language to talk about our Black and brown children, that Trump was using on Monday,” said Kobi Guillory, a middle school science teacher and organizer with CAARPR.

He called out Alderman Raymond Lopez, one of the advocates of the proposed “snap” curfew ordinance, and Cook County State’s Attorney Eileen Burke, who declined to charge the officers who fired 96 shots and killed Dexter Reed.

“We, as the people, have to fight back against these criminals, whether they’re in the White House, city council, or the state’s attorney’s office,” Guillory continued. He urged people to demand that their alderpersons support the Community Power Over Policing (CPOP) referendum.

“Black people, descendants of chattel slavery, have always been an occupied people in the belly of the beast, but it is only now that the ruling class so blatantly shows their hand and employs the tactic that they have used in our communities in the past - that they have used on people colonized by them in the Global South,” said Chanel Crittendon, a member of the Anti-War Committee Chicago (AWC).

Rania Salem with the US Palestinian Community Network (USPCN) connected Trump’s escalation in DC to attacks on immigrant communities with intensifying ICE raids locally, and Israel's recent murder of five Al Jazeera journalists in Gaza.

“Our struggles are interconnected and our enemies are the same – U.S. imperialism, capitalism, war, exploitation of Black and brown folks and immigrants,” Salem said. “It’s our duty to demand that those in power stop using our tax dollars to criminalize our people and fund genocide, to stop pouring money into state sanctioned genocide and violent policing, and to stop the Trump agenda!”

After the rally, protesters took State Street and marched to Trump Tower. Crowds of supporters raised their fists in solidarity as protesters chanted “From Chicago to D.C., we will fight ‘til we are free!”

Protesters and passersby turned to give the middle finger to Trump Tower. The protest ended with a chant inspired by the words of Black revolutionary Assata Shakur, “It is our duty to fight for our freedom. It is our duty to win. We must love one another and protect each other.

“Black people, descendants of chattel slavery, have always been an occupied people in the belly of the beast, but it is only now that the ruling class so blatantly shows their hand and employs the tactic that they have used in our communities in the past – that they have used on people colonized by them in the Global South,” said Chanel Crittendon, a member of the Anti-War Committee Chicago (AWC).

We have nothing to lose but our chains!”
