May Day fundraiser for Fight Back! held in Tampa

<![CDATA[Fight Back! fundraising event in Tampa, FL")

Tampa FL - A dozen Tampa Bay activists gathered on May Day weekend to commemorate International Workers Day. Members of the Freedom Road Socialist Organization (FRSO) held a Fight Back! fundraiser. They explained the history of International Workers Day, discussed strategy for revolution and explained the importance of having a newspaper that favored the people’s movements.

!--more--

FRSO members gave speeches about the historical turning points for the working class, such as the general strike and massive protests that led to the Haymarket Square Massacre. They discussed the brutality of the police against the strikers and the bravery of the protesters. The speakers concluded with the need for socialism and for state power to go into the hands of the working class.

Everyone donated to the paper and then participated in a rich question-and-answer session. Activists discussed concrete ways to support organized labor and the people’s movements, including writing for and distributing Fight Back! Participants criticized corporate news outlets for only presenting the views of wealthy politicians, bankers and CEOs.

Elizabeth A’ya, with Tampa Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) said, “ Fight Back! consistently reports on the progressive movements in the U.S., without demonizing the people, or ignoring the ills of our current society.”

Gage Lacharite, of the Freedom Road Socialist Organization said, “On May Day, we commemorate the working class’s efforts to change society, from protests to strikes to building a vanguard party. It is not the property-owning minority who will change society for the workers, not the class of the bosses or the bankers.
Tampa FL – A dozen Tampa Bay activists gathered on May Day weekend to commemorate International Workers Day. Members of the Freedom Road Socialist Organization (FRSO) held a Fight Back! fundraiser. They explained the history of International Workers Day, discussed strategy for revolution and explained the importance of having a newspaper that favored the people’s movements.

It is only the working class that can bring about revolution, because the laboring class produces everything and makes society run. It is the largest and most powerful class in human history.”

Fighting back in 2012: A look back

<![CDATA[As 2012 comes to an end, we pause to look back at some of the most important Fight Back! stories of the past year. 2012 has been a year full of struggle - and Fight Back! News has been there on the front lines with on-the-spot reporting and timely analysis.

!--more--

We look back to learn from the past and to get inspiration to continue and expand the struggle in 2013. If there are other articles you liked that aren’t listed here, leave a comment! (Also see 2010 and 2011 retrospectives). Editorials

2012 was an election year in the U.S. In August, we put out a perspective on the upcoming elections: The 2012 presidential election: In the midst of economic hard times, hope is in the people’s struggles, change is in the streets. Fight Back! celebrated the defeat of reactionary constitutional amendments in Florida, where 8 right-wing constitutional amendments were defeated, and in Minnesota where voter restriction and anti-gay marriage amendments went down to surprising defeats. Our post-election editorial weighed in on the election results and what to expect next. Earlier in the primary election season, Fight Back’s editorial Ron Paul: No friend of the 99% weighed in on the Ron Paul phenomenon in the context of Paul’s efforts to influence the Occupy movement, leading to a lively debate with over 140 comments. National Mobilizations

There were several national mobilizations in 2012. In July, a broad coalition of anti-war and other groups mobilized to confront NATO’s meeting in Chicago. After the protests, Chicago FRSO leader Joe Iosbaker wrote in Fight Back on lessons of the NATO protests. In September, as a hurricane menaced Tampa, Florida, over 1000 marched on the Republican National Convention. Then a week later in Charlotte, NC, protesters marched outside the Democratic National Convention protesting ‘Wall Street South’. Labor Movement

The labor movement won a major battle in the fall when the Chicago Teachers Union went on strike, challenging Mayor Emmanuel and the national wave of right wing education ‘reform’. Fight Back’s coverage included a post-strike talk with a leader of the Chicago teacher strike. In North Carolina, the least unionized state in the country, workers at a large SITEL call center started organizing to form a union. Fight Back covered the SITEL workers and supporters standing up to union busting. In Milwaukee, a group of mostly immigrant workers at Palermos Pizza went on strike, and Fight Back has given ongoing coverage, such as in this article, No justice, No Pizza! Also in Milwaukee, immigrant and non-immigrant workers once again had a huge march on International Workers Day, and Fight Back was there to cover it: Milwaukee immigrants and workers march celebrates May Day. Workers at Chicago’s Republic Windows & Doors who carried out a successful factory occupation in 2008 had to take action again in February 2012 when workers occupied their Chicago factory. Around the country, conservative governors and state legislatures tried to pass anti-union ‘right to work’ (for less) laws, and everywhere they tried they met resistance. Fight Back has covered these struggles around the country, such as in Indiana: Indiana workers say “What’s disgusting? Indiana union busting!”. The Economy

As the economy continued to flounder, Fight Back! gave coverage and analysis. Federal government on course for austerity in 2013 lays out the economic reality facing the country in the new year. The unequal effect of austerity was covered in Rise in unemployment rate means growing unemployment for African Americans and Latinos. People continued to build movements to fight back against the effects of the economic crisis. In Minnesota, the Welfare Rights Committee launched a campaign to “Raise the Welfare Grants”. In New Jersey, groups launched a drive for criminal prosecution of banks. Fighting Back Against Repression Fight Back! continues to be one of the most important sources on the growing political repression in the U.S. and the fight back against repression. Fight Back! gave an overall assessment in September of building the battle against repression.

In 2012 Fight Back! covered some important victories and many ongoing struggles against political repression. The biggest victory we covered in 2012 was Carlos Montes’s victory against repression. We also reported on a victory for an immigrant rights activist Joe Callahan who faced charges for ‘human smuggling’ for helping two Salvadoran immigrants trying to get asylum in Canada. Another important victory came at the very end of 2011, when long-time political prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal was taken off death row, where he had been since 1981. The struggle continues to free Mumia Abu-Jamal. An important victory happened in Los Angeles, when charges were dropped against Alex Sanchez. Fight Back also covered the Puerto Rican people’s important victory against repression this year when they defeated two repressive constitutional amendments championed by conservative Gov. Fortuño.

The struggle to stop the repression against the Anti-War 23 continued through 2012. Early in the year the Chicago U.S. Attorney office confirmed ‘investigation is continuing’ against anti-war, international solidarity activists, so the Committee to Stop FBI Repression has continued to remain vigilant and organize to stop the repression against them.

Government repression against the Occupy Wall Street movement continued and deepened, so Fight Back! published an assessment of the repression against the movement. Occupy activists and many others continued to protest the NDAA and indefinite detention, such as a protest in Minneapolis at President Obama’s campaign headquarters. Fight Back gives some analysis when President Obama signed the NDAA, allowing for indefinite detention without trial.

At the protest in Chicago against NATO this summer, police singled out 5 people for ridiculous and harsh charges. Fight Back! covered the case and demanded that the government drop the charges against the NATO 5. A grand jury in the Pacific Northwest started calling anarchists to testify against their movement and each other. Fight Back! covered the resistance to the grand jury in solidarity with NW Grand Jury Resisters. An important movement continued in Minnesota in 2012 to free CeCe McDonald. Fight Back gave ongoing coverage to the movement, including when Leslie Feinberg was jailed for solidarity with CeCe.

Some setbacks also happened this year, but these struggles continue too. The U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear the Holy Land Five case. Two Somali women in Rochester, Minnesota were jailed for sending humanitarian aid to their homeland in an outrageous verdict. And in a shocking case, Facebook ‘likes’ were used as evidence of material support for terrorism. African-American Struggle

The African-American struggle and the movement against police brutality surged in 2012. In March the murder of Trayvon Martin led to protests around the country as people demanded Justice for Trayvon Martin. Fight Back! covered protests in Florida, in Minneapolis, in Milwaukee, and elsewhere. In Anaheim, CA police killings sparked community protests. In Milwaukee, protesters demanded justice for Derek Williams. A People’s Tribunal was held on police brutality. The movement surged again in Florida in response to the murder of Jordan Davis. Black students in Tallahassee and the Tampa Dream Defenders protested to demand justice for Jordan Davis. Student Movement

Nationally, Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) kept building. At their national convention, SDS strategized for the year. Students in Florida protested throughout the year. The Dream Defenders took bold action several times, including when they challenged a presidential debate and 15 people were arrested. In Utah, the Revolutionary Students Union worked together with others to defend the cosmetology program at Salt Lake Community College from attacks and cuts. See more Fight Back coverage of the student movement here. Immigrant Rights Under Attack

The immigrant rights movement continued fighting attacks in 2012. In June, the Supreme Court struck down most of Arizona’s anti-immigrant law SB1070. Meanwhile DREAMERS continued to fight to win, as their 10 year struggle moved forward. In March in Alabama, civil rights and labor groups joined to protest voter suppression and anti-immigrant laws. The immigrant rights struggle continued to be sharp in California: in East L.A. the community denounced car impounds, and demanded driver's licenses for all. In July in Anaheim police killings sparked community protests. Los Angeles County Sheriff Baca was told to break ties with ‘Secure Communities’ deportation program. This program was protested around the country, like in Minnesota when the Secure Communities deportation program was implemented there. LGBTQ struggles In the 2012 election there were several marriage equality victories. For example in Minnesota an anti-gay marriage amendment and a voter restriction amendment went down to surprising defeat. Also in Minnesota, the fight to free CeCe McDonald came to a conclusion in May when Chrishaun “CeCe” McDonald accepted a plea agreement. In North Carolina, a strong struggle was waged to Say no to Amendment One. In Utah students fought against anti-gay discrimination. International

In 2012 Fight Back continued with important international coverage. In November we demanded a stop to Israel’s war on Gaza, and covered the protests around the U.S., including this one in Minnesota. We also gave analysis when Palestine’s status was elevated at the UN, in a rebuff to Israel and the U.S. And in December Fight Back! covered Leila Khaled’s return to Gaza.

As the U.S. government continued war threats against Iran, Fight Back! gave voice to the anti-war movement, covering protests like one in Salt Lake City. When Iran’s President Ahmadinejad was in New York for a U.N. visit, Fight Back covered his meeting with U.S. U.S. anti-war and religious leaders.

In Latin America, we reported on the gains of socialism in Cuba, where child malnutrition has been eliminated, while in the U.S. nearly a quarter of children are hungry. We also reported on MORENA’s protests of election fraud in Mexico, and reported on Colombian Political Prisoner Lily Obando’s freedom from prison. Remembrances

In 2012, Fight Back! recognized people who passed away that have made contributions to the struggle. In April, we shared the statement of Freedom Road Socialist Organization on the passing of Comrade Ernesto Bustillos, as well as a remembrance of Joel Olson: A life dedicated to uncompromising struggle. In December, we ran Felicia Montes’s remembrance of Jenni Rivera – La Chicana de la Banda. Fight Back! at the Movies

In 2012 Fight Back reviewed the new James Bond movie, On Her Majesty’s Imperialist Service: Skyfall and the politics of 007 in 2012 and the new Batman movie, Blackshirts & Bats: Chris Nolan’s far right worldview in The Dark Knight Rises. The remake of the 1980s anti-communist movie Red Dawn was also reviewed, ‘First tragedy, then farce’: The scandalous imperialism of the Red Dawn remake.

#UnitedStates #FightBack #YearInReview #2012

div id="sharingbuttons.io"/div]]>

As 2012 comes to an end, we pause to look back at some of the most important Fight Back! stories of the past year. 2012 has been a year full of struggle – and Fight Back! News has been there on the front lines with on-the-spot reporting and timely analysis.

We look back to learn from the past and to get inspiration to continue and expand the struggle in 2013. If there are other articles you liked that aren’t listed here, leave a comment!

In Utah, the Revolutionary Students Union worked together with others to defend the cosmetology program at Salt Lake Community College from attacks and cuts. See more Fight Back coverage of the student movement here. Immigrant Rights Under Attack

Glenn Beck attacks Fight Back! News and Committee to Stop FBI Repression

<![CDATA[Strange and desperate attempt to divide growing union movement

Wisconsin union protesters express their opinion about Fox News")

On March 3, notorious right-wing FOX TV personality Glenn Beck launched a 12-minute attack against Fight Back! News, the Committee to Stop FBI Repression and many individual labor and anti-war activists associated with these projects. The purpose of his attack was to try to sow division among the many forces that have united in Wisconsin to boldly fight back against the anti-union agenda of Governor Scott Walker.

!--more--

The Committee to Stop FBI Repression organizes to defend the 23 anti-war and international solidarity activists who have been subpoenaed to a secret grand jury in Chicago. Many of the activists’ homes and one office was raided by the FBI in September 2010. The grand jury witch hunt is supposedly investigating ‘material support for foreign terrorism.’ If indicted, these activists will face severe charges and the possibility of long jail sentences even though they haven't given any material support to terrorism. They have organized against U.S. wars and military aid and have used their First Amendment right to express their political ideas in solidarity with people facing oppression in places like Palestine and Colombia.

Many of the 23 activists attacked by the FBI and grand jury are long-time union activists and a number of unions have publicly criticized the government harassment against them. Unions have a long history of standing up for freedom of speech, freedom of association and civil liberties, because throughout history, unions have had to fight for these basic rights against harsh attacks from companies and the government. Conservatives attack unions and accuse them of being communistic, terroristic and any other thing they can think of. So it's not strange that unions are questioning the FBI's attacks on these labor and anti-war activists.

Despite the plainly obvious fact that the FBI repression against these 23 activists has no direct connection with the union fight back against Wisconsin Gov. Walker's attempt to destroy public sector unions, this is where Glen Beck starts his attack.

In the face of the bold and united response in Wisconsin against Gov. Walker's plan to destroy public sector unions, reactionaries like Beck are mortified. They rightly see it as a threat to their agenda of helping the rich get richer and more powerful while keeping workers and oppressed nationalities divided, confused and powerless. So what does Beck do? He conjures up the same old, tired tactics of McCarthyistic red-baiting. In the March 3 show, Beck tries to scare his viewers with the spectre of ‘communism,’ ‘Islam’ and ‘terrorism.’

His goal with this line of attack is to try to turn some sectors of the working class against the union movement by spinning a laughably strange story claiming that unions are basically fronts for communist, Islamist terrorism. Beck particularly tries to appeal to fire fighters, teachers and police officers to turn against the union movement in Wisconsin. The teachers have been central to the movement since they would lose their union and bargaining rights if Gov. Walker’s bill passes.

The unhinged incoherence of Beck's rants would be laughable if he didn't have a major TV network at his disposal to spout his lunatic theories day after day. His daily screeds lambasting any group or individual to the left of Attila the Hun have earned him the scorn of millions of workers and progressive people. At every protest in Wisconsin, many people bring signs ridiculing the shrill pro-corporate propaganda of Fox News and Glenn Beck. Over the past week protesters have started to bring pictures of palm trees to the wintery Wisconsin union rallies, after Fox News ran a clip they claimed showed Wisconsin union protesters shoving conservative counter-protesters. But the clip was obviously not from Wisconsin - because there was no snow on the ground and you could see palm trees in the background. This made it clearer than ever that Fox will use fake footage and outright lies to try to divide the union movement. Other popular signs people bring to the Wisconsin protests say “Faux News: We make it up” and “Fox News will lie about this.” Protesters hope these signs will show up on the TV cameras whenever they’re filming.

In that sense, the union movement and other progressive movements take it as a badge of pride to be attacked by Fox and its hosts like Beck. This is the right attitude. In Wisconsin, the divide-and-conquer attacks haven't worked and the movement's broad unity has continued to stop the union-busting bill from being voted on. This has opened up space for the movement in the streets to keep growing, with daily protests attracting as many as 100,000 people.

Whenever large numbers of people challenge the powers that be, like we're seeing in Wisconsin, these divide-and-conquer attacks from the right are as predictable as the sun rising in the east. As the movement grows, we can expect the attacks to get louder, more frequent and more shrill.

We believe that this won't be the last time Beck (and others like him) attack Fight Back! News and the Committee to Stop FBI Repression. In the 1950s and 60s these kinds of McCarthyistic attacks were common against all progressive movements, including the civil rights movement, the anti-war movement and the labor movement. Martin Luther King, Jr. was one of many prominent leaders who the FBI and prominent conservatives constantly branded as a dangerous communist because of his successes in fighting for civil rights and workers rights and his outspokenness against the U.S. war in Vietnam. It’s important not to let such attacks sidetrack or divide our movements.

When we are attacked by Fox News and its cast of characters like Glenn Beck, it means we’re doing something right and we should keep moving forward boldly.

You can find out more about the Committee to Stop FBI Repression at stopfbi.net.

See Glenn Beck's March 3 tirade here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oK75lEjH11w

#UnitedStates #Labor #Editorials #FightBack #CommitteeToStopFBIRepression #GovernorScottWalker #Wisconsin #GlennBeck #FOXNews

div id="sharingbuttons.io"/div]]>

The purpose of his attack was to try to sow division among the many forces that have united in Wisconsin to boldly fight back against the anti-union agenda of Governor Scott Walker.

Chicago, IL – A full house of supporters of Fight Back! newspaper chanted, talked and raised over $1500 Dec. 5 at the 18th Annual People’s Thanksgiving in Chicago.

Honored guests included Stan ‘Kwame’ Willis of Black People Against Police Torture. He spoke about the struggle against Mayor Daley’s bid for the 2016 Olympics. Students for Justice in Palestine, many of whom shut down the speech by war criminal and former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert at the University of Chicago this fall, came from several colleges and universities.

Victorious strikers from University of Illinois-Urbana Graduate Employees Organization and members of Teamsters Local 743 from SK Hand Tools in Chicago rounded out the night. The SK Strikers were introduced by Armando Robles of the Republic Windows and Doors workers. Robles said, “One year ago tonight I stood in this room on the day we occupied our factory.
Fight Back!'s First Year

<![CDATA[With this issue of Fight Back!, we begin our second year of publication. In our very first issue, we said; "this paper exists to build the people's struggle." We have done everything in our power to make that commitment a reality.

!--more--

We have consistently covered some of the key battles for justice in Minnesota, Central Wisconsin, and Chicago, including: the fight against welfare cuts in Minnesota, police terror in Chicago, and the reform movement in the Teamsters Union, to name a few.

Dozens of fighters in the people's movements have stepped forward to take photos, write articles, and do the technical work that makes Fight Back! possible. If you want to work on the paper in any capacity, contact us.

Each issue we distribute about 7000 copies of Fight Back! 1000's have been sold and given out at rallies of Northwest Airline workers, anti-war protests, and national events like the Millions for Mumia March in Philadelphia. Low income activists have regularly distributed the paper in some of the Minnesota's smaller cities and towns. Fight Back! is a constant presence in a number of Chicago trade union locals.

While many of the articles in the paper focus on the Midwest, much of what we cover has a national significance. As a result, Fight Back! is being regularly distributed in Florida, California, New York, and Iowa. Any reader who wants to join us in getting this paper out, should contact us about receiving bundles.

Also, starting with this issue, we will begin placing Fight Back! in progressive book stores around the country. As we have received many requests for our paper from other countries, we now are sending Fight Back! to more than 50 revolutionary organizations internationally.

Regular readers of this paper know, Fight Back!'s coverage of events is not "neutral" or "evenhanded." We believe that the existing order of things needs to be challenged, and that the rich have no right to their wealth and privilege. To this end we have done our best to cover important developments in the movements of workers and oppressed peoples.

Last year, we laid a lot of stress on the founding convention of the Black Radical Congress, a key gathering for the African American Liberation Movement. This Fall, a similar convention will take place in the Chicano movement; the New Raza Left Conference. We look forward to promoting, and covering it.

You may have noticed, this issue of Fight Back! is larger than previous issues. More pages and more news.

Over the course of the next year, we are going to be issuing two calls which are crucial to Fight Back!'s growth. The first, is that we will be urging readers to make regular financial contributions and become sustainers. This will help us print more papers, with more pages, more often. The second, a launching of a subscription drive.

The editors and staff of Fight Back! believe that our first year of publication has been marked by success. And, more importantly, we have heard the same thing from many of our readers.

We look forward to serving the people's struggle in the coming year!

#UnitedStates #Editorial #Editorials #FightBack

div id="sharingbuttons.io"/div]]>
