The gathering was organized by the Salvadoran Movement in Solidarity with Cuba, which is made up of various committees throughout El Salvador in solidarity with socialist Cuba. The gathering reaffirmed solidarity with the Cuban people and socialist government.

!--more--

Fernando Gonzalez came from Cuba for the gathering. Gonzalez was one of the heroic Cuban 5 who was imprisoned in the U.S. until 2014 and now is the president of the Cuban Institute of People’s Friendship (ICAP), which builds international solidarity.

As part of the gathering, there was a march on July 27 in honor of Cuba’s national day of rebellion, commemorating the first armed uprising of the Cuban revolution. The march went from Bolívar Plaza to Martí Plaza. In the march there was a strong spirit of revolution and internationalism, with Cuban flags and revolutionary flags and banners.

On July 28, delegates paid tribute at various revolutionary monuments and tombs in San Salvador including the monument to Schafik Handal, Francisco Morazán’s tomb, Farabundo Martí’s tomb, the monument to Simon Bolivar, and Monseñor Romero’s crypt. After that delegates arrived at the Center of Studies of El Salvador (CEES), where the presentations of the gathering would take place. There were presentations such as “Latin America and the Caribbean: Imperialist offensive and the people’s resistance,” “Cuba in development: Present situation and perspectives,” “Solidarity between peoples: A historic necessity - the Cuban experience,” “Strengthening Central American movements in solidarity with Cuba, Venezuela and our America - Experiences with organization, action and struggle in defense of national sovereignty.”

There was also a presentation on July 29 titled “International support for the Salvadoran people’s struggle against imperialist aggression, carried out by the oligarchy and their party.” That was followed by a discussion. Finally, there was tribute paid to Comandante Fidel Castro Ruz, Ernesto Che Guevara and Hugo Chavez. The final declaration of the gathering was read as well as the action plan that was adopted, and the event closed with a cultural performance.

A participant in the gathering from Costa Rica named Bruno said, “For us it was very important to come and get to know the different solidarity groups that exist in Central America, and we’re very interested in having coordinated actions. Cuba gave unconditional support to the struggle in El Salvador in moments of great need, just like they have done with all the peoples of the Americas and the rest of the world. We’re proud to carry out our internationalist duty to support the Cuban people and government in their struggle against the blockade and the increasing threats from the empire. We hope to continue strengthening our links of solidarity with our Central American sisters and brothers, and with that strengthened solidarity we will be able to better confront the empire’s attacks on Cuba.”

#SanSalvadorElSalvador #SanSalvador #ElSalvador #Cuban5 #Americas

div id="sharingbuttons.io"/div]]>

<![CDATA[A solidarity statement by the Committee to Stop FBI Repression

Fight Back News Service is circulating the following statement from the Committee to Stop FBI Repression

!--more--

Many of the U.S. government’s recent campaigns of repression, including the September 2010 FBI raids, grand jury subpoenas, and ongoing investigation of anti-war and international solidarity activists known as the Anti-War 23, have been pursued under the guise of investigating “material support of terrorism.” The bankruptcy of this rationale is revealed when we look to another ongoing case of political repression by the U.S. government – this time attacking individuals who were actively working to prevent terrorist attacks – the Cuban 5. The FBI targeted these five men because they were monitoring terrorist groups that the U.S. government supports. They were working to defend the country of Cuba from terrorist attacks.

Since the victory of the Cuban Revolution in 1959, Cuba has been the target of more terrorist attacks than any other country in the world. 3,478 Cuban citizens have been killed in these attacks and 2,099 have been injured. The overwhelming majority of the attacks originated in southern Florida. The attacks were launched by groups who have been sheltered and in some cases financed by the U.S. government. Gerardo Hernandez, Ramón Labañino, Fernando Gonzalez, Antonio Guerrero and René Gonzalez, now collectively known as the Cuban Five, were working to monitor the groups who have led and threatened these terrorist attacks. Their work to prevent further acts of terror from being unleashed on the Cuban people led to their arrest by FBI agents in Miami in September 1998.

The U.S. government has kept the Cuban Five imprisoned since September 12, 1998, convicted of “conspiracy to commit espionage.” There is no evidence, nor is there even an accusation, that these men engaged in any actual acts of espionage. They did nothing wrong – they only worked to defend Cuban sovereignty and defend the Cuban people from attacks. Their case has garnered international attention, including from a United Nations working group, which found that the imprisonment of the Five was a case of arbitrary detention and is in violation of Article 14 of the International Convention on Civil and Political Liberties.

The real reason for the imprisonment of the Cuban Five has nothing to do with espionage, just as the more recent acts of repression against international solidarity activists have nothing to do with combating terrorism. These are acts of political repression, plain and simple. Whether for defending Cuban sovereignty and the Cuban people, or for supporting people resisting U.S. wars and occupations in other parts of the world, the Cuban Five and the Anti-War 23 were all targeted for their opposition to the foreign policy aims of the U.S. government.

The Committee to Stop FBI Repression stands in solidarity with the Cuban Five and condemns the ongoing repression against these heroes of the Cuban people. Because of the way my mail is handled here, your letter took a while to reach me, and most probably this one will reach you after "The Peoples Thanksgiving." I express our solidarity with the Freedom Road Socialist Organization, Fight Back!, and the appreciation of the Cuban Five for their support to our struggle for justice.

After having learned that the U.S. government paid off journalists in Miami to influence the community before, during and after our trial, we filed a new appeal. The government opposed it and asked the judge to strike it from the record, so these days we are working on a response.

But besides the legal battle we are at a stage where the support of comrades like you is more important than ever, and we really appreciate every effort to break the wall of silence imposed on the case. We have no doubt that one day justice will prevail and we will return to Cuba.

Thank you very much for sending me the list of the activities carried out by our comrades in Chicago, and for keeping high the flag of freedom for the Cuban Five in that city.

I send our greetings and gratitude to Sarah and to all our friends there.

Hasta la Victoria Siempre!

Gerardo Hernandez Nordelo

The most famous U.S. political prisoner, Mumia Abu Jamal wrote of the Cuban 5 in 1998, "Five Cubans were imprisoned in Miami and charged with spying for Havana. Cuba passed on reports to the U.S. government in a bid to stop the terrorism that has cost over 3400 Cuban lives since 1959. The U.S. responded to the reports by rounding up the five, charging them and treating them as spies. They have been convicted of charges related to their monitoring, and sentenced to terms of 15 years to life for defending their nation from terrorist attacks. Gerardo Hernandez, Fernando Gonzalez, Ramon Labanino, Antonio Guerrero and Rene Gonzalez committed no acts against the United States, nor monitored any American secrets. They entered the Miami exile community and observed the planning of acts of terrorism against their nation of birth, and reported it. That is their ‘crime.’”

Amnesty International, the United Nations Human Rights Commission, 11 Nobel Prize winners, including Jimmy Carter, have protested the Cuban 5’s unjust incarceration in U.S. prisons. The Cuban 5 case was appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court, but the Obama administration asked the Court not to review the case, and it did not.

It is noteworthy that three of the Cuban 5, Rene Gonzalez, Fernando Gonzalez and Gerardo Hernandez, volunteered and fought in Angola in its struggle to liberate that country from the former South African apartheid army.

The struggle for the freedom of these 5 Cuban political prisoners has become a worldwide struggle. At a previous Peoples Thanksgiving we sent the Cuban 5, along with other political prisoners, letters in solidarity.

#ChicagoIL #Cuba #Cuban5 #PoliticalPrisoners #PeoplesThanksgiving #GerardoHernandez

div id="sharingbuttons.io"/div]]>

The U.S. responded to the reports by rounding up the five, charging them and treating them as spies.

<![CDATA[San Francisco, CA - The Miami Five are five Cuban nationals - Fernando González, Gerardo Hernández, Antonio Guerrero, Ramón Labañino and René González. On June 8, 2001, they were convicted by the Federal District Court in Miami on charges ranging from espionage, to failure to register as agents of a foreign government, to conspiracy to commit murder.

!--more--

While the U.S government claims to be fighting a 'war against terrorism,' it has a 40-year history of supporting terrorist acts against Cuba, including repeated attempts to assassinate the Cuban president, a series of hotel bombings and the bombing of a civilian airliner. The Miami Five, who actually were fighting against terrorism by gathering information on U.S.-sponsored terrorist groups in Miami, are held in U.S. prisons pending an appeal.

Patsy Behrend, a co-chair of the National Network on Cuba, said, "Our concerns are the fact that they were not given a fair trial, they were given unfair sentences and there were restrictions on their families' visits."

None of the five Cubans had handled classified information or any information linked to U.S. national defense. The U.S. government conceded that the defendants had not transmitted secrets. However, Guerrero was convicted of espionage and was given the same sentence as Aldrich Ames and Robert Hansen, who had supplied numerous secret documents to the former Soviet Union.

The Five's defense lawyers asked to move the trial, since they could not receive a fair trial in Miami. The U.S. government denied their requests. Jurors complained that a crew from Television Marti, which is supportive of terrorist activities both in Cuba and against Cuban-American dissenters in Miami, was filming them and their license plates. The jurors told the judge that they felt pressured to convict. The court acknowledged the problem, but took no action to change the venue of the trial.

The U.S. government has tried to isolate the Miami Five. Since their arrest on Sept. 12, 1998 until Feb. 3, 2000, the Miami Five were kept in solitary confinement, in violation of U.S. prison regulations. The United States has denied visas to Adriana Pérez O'Connor and Olga Salanueva, the wives of Gerardo and René.

The Five have an appeal pending before the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta. But they were placed in widely dispersed prisons, hampering their appeal preparation and hindering family and diplomatic contact. The Five were also placed in solitary confinement for a period of time in an obvious attempt to further hamper their efforts to prepare for the appeal.

To learn more about the international campaign free the Miami Five, call the National Network on Cuba, 415-566-8560 or email nnoc20012002@yahoo.com.
