<![CDATA[

Milwaukee, WI - Trade union leaders welcomed the chairman of the Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU), Elmer “Ka Bong” Labog, to Milwaukee, October 4 and 5. The KMU is the largest and most militant labor coalition in the Philippines. Its name translates to May First Movement, a reference to the revolutionary workers’ holiday of May Day.

!--more--

Ka Bong spoke before the full delegate meeting of the Milwaukee Area Labor Council, detailing the violent repression that trade unionists are facing from the Philippine government. The Philippine government is the largest recipient of U.S. military aid in the southeast Asian region. Ka Bong received a standing ovation after his moving testimony, and delegates of the labor council generously raised hundreds of dollars to support and defend Philippine trade unionists.

To coincide with Ka Bong’s visit, the Milwaukee Area Labor Council (MALC) renewed its 2019 solidarity resolution with Philippine labor, this time calling for the urgent passage and signing of the Philippines Human Rights Act (PHRA). The PHRA would suspend U.S. military aid to the Philippines. MALC President Pam Fendt presented Ka Bong with the solidarity resolution before the delegate body.

On October 5, Ka Bong joined UAW Local 75 workers on the picket line at the Stellantis parts distribution center in Milwaukee’s Bay View neighborhood. Ka Bong met with local UAW leaders as well as members of AFT Local 212, who also joined the picket in solidarity. He then traveled a short way with local trade union activists to visit the Bay View Massacre historical marker, where seven striking workers and bystanders were shot and killed by state forces during the 1886 general strike for the eight-hour day.

In the evening, Ka Bong returned to the Labor Council for a longer event and potluck hosted by MALC’s Young Workers Committee, the Milwaukee Anti-war Committee, the Milwaukee Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression, and the Chicago chapter of Anakbayan USA, the U.S.-based branch of an international Filipino youth organization fighting for justice in the Philippines. Representatives of each organization talked about how the struggle in the Philippines is connected to the struggle of workers and activists in the U.S., and they gathered signatures for a petition to stop U.S. military aid to the Philippines.

Ka Bong spoke about the many ways that the new Marcos Jr. regime is just as repressive and inhumane as the old Duterte and Marcos Sr. regimes. Less than 5% of Philippine workers have unions, and the national minimum wage is less than $11 per day - not nearly enough to raise a family under high inflation.

He said critics of the government are being harassed, threatened, disciplined, deported and killed. One of the latest victims of the repressive Marcos regime, veteran KMU union organizer Jude Fernandez, was murdered by police on September 29. Attendees held up “Justice for Jude Fernandez” signs and took solidarity photos to spread awareness of the campaign.

#MilwaukeeWI #International #Philippines #KMU #MALC

div id="sharingbuttons.io"/div]]>

<![CDATA[Fight Back News Service is circulating this December 11 joint statement from the Council of Global Unions Philippine affiliates. PH affiliates of global unions demand release of HRD7, stop arrests of PH unionists

!--more--

We strongly deplore the simultaneous raids of residences and the consecutive arrests of trade union organizers, Dennise Velasco of Defend Jobs Philippines, Romina Astudillo, Deputy Secretary-General of Kilusang Mayo Uno-Metro Manila, Mark Ryan Cruz, Regional Executive Committee of KMU-Metro Manila, Jaymie Gregorio Jr. of KMU-Metro Manila, Joel Demate of Solidarity of Labor Rights and Welfare (SOLAR), Rodrigo Esparago of Sandigang Manggagawa sa Quezon City (SMQC) and journalist Lady Ann Salem, Communication officer of the International Association of Women in Radio and Television, and editor for online news site Manila Today. Astudillo and Cruz were recently elected as officers of KMU Metro Manila Chapter in its Regional Congress held last November 29.

The raids happened dawn of December 10, International Human Rights Day, which allegedly generated an armory of high-powered rifles and explosives in each of the residences searched. Velasco, Esparago, Astudillo, Cruz, Demate, Gregoria Jr and Salem may be facing obviously manufactured charges of illegal possession of firearms and explosives on this account –the same criminal charges filed against trade union activists who were arrested before them. Just a few days before Human Rights Day, Jose Bernardino of Workers Alliance in Region III (WAR III-KMU), an organizer of workers in industrial zones and jeepney drivers, and former President of the Young Christian Workers, was also arrested on the same made up criminal charges. With the Anti-Terror Law in effect, it has been an open season for arrests of activists, and it will not come as a surprise that these trade union organizers will be labelled as communist-terrorists.

This is yet another blow to the trade union movement in the Philippines. Trade union activists are being criminalized, illegally arrested and detained, as the government’s way of preventing them from organizing workers into unions and associations and depriving them their freedom of thought and expression as translated into their activities among the workers. The intensified crackdown is precisely aimed at stifling dissent and organized action among the people. Killings among activists and rights defenders, as a way of instilling fear and silencing the people, have not ceased.

We call on the Duterte government to immediately release the HRD7 workers and journalist, drop the trumped-up charges against them, and stop this detestable practice of filing manufactured criminal charges against unionists and activists.

We also call on international bodies - the UN Human Rights Council and the International Labor Organization (ILO) - to consider as an emergency the deteriorating human rights condition in the Philippines and employ all official and diplomatic venues available, including sending their missions to investigate human rights and trade union repression in the country and help reverse the situation.

We likewise call on trade unions and freedom-loving people all over the world to continue the fight for trade union and human rights in the Philippines.
U.S.-based multinational corporations dominate the economic life of the Philippines, and the U.S. government pays and participates in the for the repression, including sending U.S. military advisors.

Progressives here in the U.S. can make a difference in what happens in the Philippines. Call the Philippine Ambassador Jose Manuel Romualdez at 202-467-9366. Let him know you are against the attacks by the police and military on KMU labor leaders and organizers in Southern Tagalog.

<![CDATA[Ed Cubelo with leaders of Minnesota's labor movement and tour organizers. with leaders of Minnesota's labor movement and tour organizers.")

Fight Back! Interviewed Ed Cubelo, the chairman of the Kilusang Mayo Uno, or May 1st Movement in Metro Manila, while he was in the U.S. on a speaking tour. The KMU is one the largest trade union federations in the Philippines.

!--more--

Fight Back!: Can you say a few words about what the May 1st Movement is?

Ed Cubelo: The May 1st Movement, established in 1980, is a genuine, militant union promoting and advancing workers' interests.

Fight Back!: What are the main issues facing Filipino workers?

Cubelo: Among the major issues, basically, of Filipino workers are low wages, no benefits, no security of jobs, and widespread contractualization.

Fight Back!: Can you say a few words about what contractualization is and the fight against it?

Cubelo: Contractualization is a form of attack against organized labor and against Filipino workers. If you are a contractual, you have no right to join unions, no right to form a union. You have no benefits. If you work longer hours, you'll receive no extra benefits, and if you get injured at work, you get no compensation, and they are vulnerable to various types of labor abuses. This is legalized under Philippine laws, and so for many years, workers have been struggling to repeal this law and end this practice.

Fight Back!: How has the KMU been fighting contractualization?

Cubelo: So KMU has started organizing labor contractuals because we believe that, despite the presence of the law, which prohibits contractuals to form organized unions, it is the right of all workers, whether contractual or regular, to have a union, to have better working conditions, to receive a living wage, and to enjoy rights of an ordinary worker. So KMU has been asserting that these laws would be repealed, at the same time demanding that the president fulfill his promise to end contractualization.

Fight Back!: The KMU has been facing repression from the U.S.-backed Duterte regime. Could you say a few words about the repression and the fight against it?

Cubelo: Because KMU is part of the broader protests criticizing the policies, the repressive policies of the Duterte government, the state has been arresting KMU union organizers. The state has been fighting trumped-up cases against KMU leaders. The state has been demonizing the struggles of KMU, red-tagging KMU, and creating fear among workers, warning them not to join KMU. But despite distress, despite these challenges, the KMU continues to enjoy the support of many workers. KMU continues to wage protests, and KMU has been leading the struggle for the workers' welfare.

Fight Back!: Is there anything you would like to say to American workers?

Cubelo: We are appealing for the support of our brothers and sisters here in the United States, our fellow American workers, to support the struggle of the Filipino people. The situation of workers is not consistently reported in mainstream media, so please help, spreading awareness about the situation of Filipino workers, and support the struggle of the Filipino people for real nationalism and democracy.

#UnitedStates #Labor #Philippines #Asia #PeoplesStruggles #KMU #Minnesota

div id="sharingbuttons.io"/div]]>

Since Duterte took office, 42 labor leaders in the Philippines have been killed by extra-judicial means.

Over 200 labor strikes have been waged in opposition to neo-liberal policies like the expansion of temp work to 70% of the workforce, the use of ‘company unions’ and aggressive attacks on working conditions and labor rights.

Unionists, environmental activists, women's rights activists, human rights activists and Catholic priests have been the victims of illegal arrest and detention, arsons, torture, killings and political repression from Duterte's military and police forces.

In his speech to the labor council, Cubelo noted that despite all this, the people's movements in the Philippines are growing, and KMU is organizing the "difficult to organize" industries, like temp workers and call centers, with incredible speed and success. Because of their effectiveness, Duterte has slandered the KMU as "terrorists" in order to justify violent attacks on labor leaders and activists.

The atrocities committed by Duterte's military and police have been enabled by support of the U.S. government via the generous financial support of U.S. taxpayers, and of course, the political backing of President Trump.

The Filipino worker leaders also spoke to the Milwaukee Area Labor Council executive board about how the U.S. labor movement could stand in solidarity by calling on legislators to cut U.S. support for the Duterte regime.

A resolution calling for an end to U S. military aid to the Philippines was passed unanimously by the Milwaukee Area Labor Council delegate body on International Workers' Day, May 1.

The resolution condemns the human and labor rights violations committed by the Duterte regime and expresses solidarity with the people's movements in the Philippines. The resolution calls on Southeast Wisconsin's U.S. representatives to be advocates for ending U.S. military aid to the Duterte regime, and to support the House and Senate resolutions that could enact this change.
NYC event on trade union movement in the Philippines

<![CDATA[Enter a descriptive sentence about the photo here.")

New York, NY - Forty activists gathered on Friday, April 12, at The People’s Forum in New York City for an event on the Philippines labor movement hosted by BAYAN USA and Mission to End Modern Day Slavery. The program, titled, “Breaking the Chains: A Sharing on the Philippines Labor Movement,” featured presentations by Kilusang Mayo Uno (May First Movement) Vice Chair Ed Cubelo, and BAYAN Metro Manila Chair Mong Palatino.

!--more--

Ed Cubelo’s presentation focused on the current situation of Filipino workers under Duterte’s regime. Cubelo explained that while Duterte boasts about job creation, workers still face a low minimum wage of $10 per day in the capital region, and $3 to $4 per day in some regions of Mindanao. 70% of workers are also still contractual, meaning they are temp workers who cannot legally join unions and receive no benefits or health care protection.

Cubelo focused the bulk of his presentation on workers’ resistance and success in organizing unions and strikes. A few examples from 2018 include workers at Jolly Bee and PLDT who, after organizing with the May First Movement (KMU), were able to found unions within just one week. Workers at Middleby organized a sit-down strike that continued even as the government attempted to starve them. Despite increased government surveillance and the targeting of KMU labor leaders, Cubelo emphasized that organizers have not stopped fighting back. In addition to helping organize unions and strikes, KMU has also started a workers’ school, Paaralang Crispin Beltran, that offers free courses on subjects such as leadership training, paralegal training, unionism, and know-your-rights training.

Mong Palatino’s presentation discussed the rich history of people’s resistance in the Philippines and the current national situation regarding President Duterte’s war on drugs, which has targeted workers and the poor, resulting in an estimated 25,000 to 30,000 extrajudicial killings. Despite the brutal actions of the Duterte government, Palatino emphasized the fact that people from many different labor groups, women’s groups, lawyers’ groups, and international solidarity groups have continued to resist this oppression and fight back.

After the presentations, the event closed out with a group discussion. The questions and discussion included topics such as women workers’ conditions and resistance, leadership structure in unions in the Philippines, and what people in the U.S. can do to show support and international solidarity.

#NewYorkNY #Labor #Philippines #PeoplesStruggles #KMU #May1stMovement #Asia

div id="sharingbuttons.io"/div]]>

<![CDATA[(Fight Back! News/Staff) “Arroyo’s hands bloody again with the killing of KMU National Council Member and Nestlé Cabuyao Union President Diosdado ‘Ka Fort’ Fortuna.”")

Fight Back News Service is circulating the following Sept. 23 statement from the main trade union federation in the Philippines, the KMU (May 1st Workers’ Center), concerning the assassination of one of its leaders, Diosdado Fortuna. The government of U.S.-backed Pilipino President Arroyo is responsible for a wave of human rights violations.

!--more--

Labor center Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU) condemns in strongest terms the brutal killing of Diosdado ‘Ka Fort’ Fortuna, President of Union of Filipino Employees Union, the workers union of Nestle Cabuyao; he is also the chairperson of Pagkakaisa ng mga Manggagawa ng Timog Katagalugan (PAMANTIK-KMU) and Chairman of Anakpawis-Southern Tagalog. He was shot dead at around 6 pm last night in front of Sagara Factory in Canlubang, Laguna.

Fortuna, 50 years old, is an active member of KMU National Council and has served the militant labor movement for 29 years since 1976 as a labor leader of the multinational company Nestle workers’ union. He also holds several positions, including Anakpawis Party List-Southern Tagalog Chairman and Co-Chairperson of the National Coalition for the Protection of Workers Rights-Southern Tagalog (NCPWR-ST). He is survived by his wife, Luz Fortuna, and their three children.

Luz Baculo, PAMANTIK-ST Secretary General said Fortuna left the Nestle picket line in Cabuyao, Laguna at around 5 pm yesterday. Ka Fort was supposed to visit his ailing grandson and was on board a motorcycle on his way home to Barangay Paciano when he was attacked by still unidentified assailants. He sustained two fatal caliber .45 gunshot wounds in the chest. He was rushed by bystanders to the Calamba Doctors Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. According to eye witnesses, motorcycle riding men fired shots at Fortuna.

“We are certain that the killing is politically motivated. Arroyo’s hands are bloodied once more with the assassination of Ka Fort. Given the notorious record of human rights violations and summary executions of leaders, members and activists of progressive peoples’ organizations in Southern Luzon and other parts of the country, we are holding the military, police, Regional Special Action Force and the Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo government highly accountable in the killing,” said KMU National Chairperson Elmer Labog.

“As a principled labor leader, Ka Fort manned the Nestle picket lines since their strike started in January 2002. He consistently advocated workers’ rights and welfare by actively serving the union and progressive people’s movement in Southern Tagalog, despite dangerous conditions and threats on his life. He braved and fought the government’s militarization campaign and atrocities on the people’s rights and livelihood. We will seek justice for his death and will send the evil perpetrators of this murder to hell where they belong,” Labog said.

Fortuna is the third regional mass leader killed after KASAMA-TK chairperson Eddie Gumanoy and Eden Garcellana of KARAPATAN - Southern Tagalog were killed in April 2003.

Indignation protests underway; militants seek justice for all victims of political repression

Baculo said that local unions and labor associations under PAMANTIK-ST will hold an indignation protest at Calamba Crossing in Laguna this morning.
