Los Angeles, CA- On Friday July 17, over 100 community members in Boyle Heights gathered at Mariachi Plaza for a vigil and press conference protesting the recent ICE killings of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo and Joan Sebastian Guerrero. This event was one of many held across the country as part of the Legalization for All national week of action.

“Now that these two fathers have lost their life, their children are going to have to deal with the grief and trauma for the rest of their lives,” said Antonieta Garcia from the CSO education committee.

On July 7, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was killed while on his way to work by ICE agents who apparently mistook him for someone else. Then, on July 13, Joan Sebastian Guerrero was fatally shot in the face in front of his wife and three-year-old daughter. During the past year, over 30 people have died while in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody and over ten fatally shot and killed during enforcement operations.

“For the past two years Trump and his cronies have repeatedly used ICE and DHS to disrupt and destroy the working class. Our oppressors invest billions into these violent agencies instead of funding our communities or raising our wages,” said Henry Cornejo, a Teamster and member of Freedom Road Socialist Organization.

These recent deaths have sparked outrage amongst people from across the country from all walks of life. Organizers and activists everywhere are demanding accountability. However, the administration also wants to crack down on those that are fighting on the front lines for these causes. One such activist, Nadia Topete, has recently become the target of FBI repression.

“They want to intimidate activists and silence our movement, but we will not back down. CSO and L4A stands in solidarity with our sister Nadia and all organizers facing political repression,” said Verita Topete, co-chair of the CSO immigration committee.

As ICE continues to spread terror and violence through their enforcement actions, we cannot allow these murderers to operate with impunity in our communities. Derek Mejia from the CSO police accountability committee told the crowd, “Whether it’s ICE, LAPD or LASD, we need killer cops off our streets!”

Chicago, IL – On Wednesday, July 15, more than 200 Chicagoans held a vigil and marched in Little Village to honor the two victims shot and killed by ICE this past week; Lorenzo Salgado Araujo on July 8 in Houston, Texas, and Joan Sebastian Guerrero on July 12 in Biddeford, Maine.

“ICE agents continue to roam the streets and kidnap our people, and here in this neighborhood of La Villita they continue to tear apart families,” stated Gio Araujo of the Immigrant Rights Working Committee of the Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression (IRWC of CAARPR)

Araujo continued, “We have been campaigning to hold the Chicago Police Department accountable for their actions taken during Operation Midway Blitz and to this day such as the what we saw in Albany Park this last month.”

Marcela Rodriguez of the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights stated that “federal immigration agents have engaged in at least 39 shootings since January 2025. Those shootings have resulted in 11 deaths, including Silverio Villegas-Gonzalez here in Chicago. Clearly this shows that murder is one of ICE’s tactics.” Marcela called for Illinois police departments to issue protocols to prevent unlawful actions in and around court houses by ICE. “The choice is clear, they can either proactively prevent the next ICE murder, or they can stand idly by as ICE continues to terrorize our communities.”

Anna Guieb, from Tangol Migrante Chicago, highlighted the struggles that Filipino immigrants endure both in the homeland and in the U.S. when they arrive in search of a better life. “We are here to both honor all those we have lost, but also to fight like hell for the living.”

Jay Starks of CAARPR’s Campaign to Free Incarcerated Survivors of Torture (CFIST) emphasized the urgency for Chicago alderpersons to support the Community Power of Policing (CPOP) referendum. “Any official who speaks against accountability right now should be questioned, and that includes State’s Attorney Burke. Any official who opposes CPOP doesn’t see a connection between ICE murders, CPD torture and wrongful convictions needs to hear from us regularly,” said Starks.

As the vigil concluded in prayer and words of solidarity, the crowd then took to the streets and marched along 26th Street. Workers of nearby businesses came out in solidarity with chants of “Justicia for Lorenzo!” and “Justicia for Guerrero!” The march then concluded at a nearby park with a moment of silence for all victims of ICE violence.

The vigil and march was organized by the Immigrant Rights Working Committee with support from ICIRR, Tangol Migrante and Mexican Students de Aztlan at UIC in response to Legalization 4 All’s call for a week of action demanding justice for Lorenzo Salgado-Araujo and Nadia Topete.

Portland, OR – On Wednesday, July 15, 230-plus community members gathered together at Discovery Gateway Park to honor the three lives stolen by ICE killers. The event, organized by Portland Contra Las Deportaciones demanded ICE off our streets and justice for Lorenzo Salgado, Joan Sebastián Durán Guerrero, and the third victim from Florida.

The event had a large ofrenda where attendees left items for the victims. The table was filled with candles, colorful flowers that included the traditional cempasúchil, beer, lottery cards, sweet cookies and more.

As people entered the park, they were able to leave their offerings at the altar and pick up a small candle. After speeches, people lit their candles and listened to songs by activist group Singing Resistance. Afterwards, the community blew out their candles to honor the three victims.

Gabriel Ollinsix a leading member of Portland Contra las Deportaciones was the first speaker and set the tone for the night, “We know that if our families are ever going to have true safety, if we are ever going to know that our fathers, our tíos, and our loved ones will come home at the end of the day, we must drive ICE out of our communities.”

This was the sentiment that was felt throughout the attendees. While there were a few tears at different times and there were a few chants repeated with anger demanding justice, the overall feeling was the understanding that no one is safe as long as ICE is out in the streets.

While the event was first announced on Sunday, July 12, by the time the event happened on Wednesday, July 15, two more victims had been included: Joan Sebastián Durán Guerrero and a third victim, Juan Coronilla. The victims were from Latin America, which brought Spanish speakers to the event. The speakers all gave their speeches in Spanish and English.

Speakers also addressed the repression faced by activist Nadia Topete in Southern California. Topete was called before a grand jury twice over the last year in response to her immigrant rights activism. Attendees honored her resistance and committed to continuing to help her fight this repression.

The event ended with a call to action from Cami Saunders: “Thank you for being here with us today, and I hope to see all of you again! The fight continues, and there is so much to do here in Portland. The murders did not happen in our city, but we are fighting to close the facility, to prevent it from happening here.”

Volunteers went around the park as people were leaving with tablets to send emails to the Portland Permitting and Development to demand the Portland ICE facility be shut down.

Edwin Salazar of the Community Agency for Resources, Advocacy and Services (CARAS) stated, “If it’s him this week, is it going to be us next? Who's going to be next?”

Salazar continued “We’re angry, we’re upset. But we can continue to show up consistently every single month, every single week, every single day. We’re supporting our immigrant communities here in San Jose, in California, in America!”

Uriel Magdaleno, a member of CSO San Jose, read a statement by the Legalization for All Network in which he gives details on the unjust pursuit Salgado-Araujo faced by ICE agents. Magdaleno stated “ICE agents had no jurisdiction to perform local traffic stops. They lie and this is what they use to justify an ICE agent opening fire and shooting Salgado-Araujo in the stomach.”

Magdaleno later brought up a case in which ICE, in Texas, took a life in a similar manner, stating, “On February 24, 2026, 23-year-old Ruben-Ray Martinez, a Chicano U.S. citizen, was shot and killed during a traffic stop. Shame!” Magdaleno finished off his speech chanting, “Justice for Lorenzo” and “Hands off Nadia!”

Kim Cortéz-Solorio with the Freedom Road Socialist Organization told the crowd, “The monopoly capitalist class is set on attacking the Chicano nation and continues to use ICE as its primary means of carrying out their brutality against Chicanos and immigrants.”

Cortéz-Solorio continued, “Centro CSO members Nadia Topete and Alejandro Orellana are trying to be silenced by [Assistant U.S. Attorney] Bill Essayli. We stand in solidarity and say protesting is not a crime!”

The rally ended with chanting that showed solidarity with those who were martyred by ICE. Kim Cortez-Solorio and Jessica Aviles led chants including, “Justice for Lorenzo,” “Justice For Renee” and “ICE out!” The chanting was followed by a group called Singing Solidarity who brought community members together by singing at the end of the action.

Dallas, TX – On July 8, in response to the fatal shooting of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo by ICE agents in Houston the day before, NAARPR-Dallas organized an emergency rally at the Dallas City Hall to demand justice and that his killers be held accountable,

Over 50 people crowded in front of Dallas City Hall to make their demands heard. They chanted “El pueblo unido jamás será vencido!

Between chants members of DAWC, FRSO-Dallas, and PYM Dallas gave speeches.

Blake Van Wicklen of FRSO-Dallas told the crowd, “We will not allow fear to silence us. We will continue organizing in our workplaces, in our unions, in our neighborhoods and in the streets until every worker, regardless of immigration status, can live with dignity and without fear.”

Jo Hargis of DAWC stated, “It is clear to anyone who is looking that the violence we export to Palestine, to Iran, and around the world is inextricably linked with violence visited upon people here at home. We must hold accountable the forces who profit off of these murders, whether the murdered be a father on his way to work in Texas, or a school full of little girls in Minab, or the steadfast people of Palestine.”

Xavier Velasquez, the chair of the National Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression – Dallas stated, “This is what we are up against: ICE had been targeting people thru large raids which resulted in the deaths of Renee Good, Alex Pretti and Keith Porter Jr.. What we've witnessed thru the course of the year is a de-emphasis on large raids and they've been doing smaller scale kidnappings and quieter raids. These new ICE tactics are no less deadly, as we saw yesterday. The spin they are giving this recent killing is the end goal of this racist system. They are now trying to say that this killing is OK because Lorenzo was a so called ‘illegal alien.’ Shame!”

An altar was set up in remembrance of Lorenzo Araujo where people paid their respects. NAARPR members encouraged people to attend a vigil on July 10 in Dallas for Lorenzo Araujo at Huitzitzilin cafe and promoted their “ICE out of the World Cup” protest that is set for July 14.

Washington, DC – On Friday, February 6, DC organizations joined the call from the Legalization for All network for a National Day of Action in solidarity with the ongoing struggle against ICE terror in Minneapolis and across the country.

Around 50 community members, organizers and activists were out in the street demanding “ICE out!” “Justice for all victims of ICE terror!” and “Legalization for all!” with temperatures well below freezing. Protesters faced down federal and local police. The people were not deterred and protested right up to the barricades of ICE headquarters.

The National Day of Action fell one month after the cold-blooded murder of community observer Renee Good. The DC Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression (DCAARPR), alongside Families Not Feds (FNF), Movimiento Migrante DC, Youth Demand Action, 50501DC, Freedom Road Socialist Organization – DC, and DC Against the Trump Agenda Coalition, hosted the action outside ICE headquarters in Southwest DC.

A member of DCAARPR told the crowd, “This is an ICE Out rally; we want to, and need to kick ICE out of our city, but we also need to keep ICE out. Just a few minutes from here, there is a plan to build another ICE headquarters. It is no coincidence that this is happening in Southeast, a historically Black and brown section of the city.”

He also discussed the case of Phillip Brown, a Black man, who was shot at by a Homeland Security Investigation (HSI) officer, and barely escaped with his life. There is concrete evidence that the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) covered up for HIS.

A member of Anakbayan DC stated, “Renee Good is another victim of a corrupt, unjust system that treats human beings as disposable. It is a system that has been upheld by both parties and several administrations with our taxpayer dollars. Her murder is a reminder that the government does not care about us.”

Many of the participating organizations have been on the ground in DC leading mass mobilizations against ICE and, more broadly, the racist and reactionary Trump.

The protest finished with a speech by Cameron McLaren, an organizer with Freedom Road Socialist Organization – DC., who stated, “We are fighting for a system where no human is illegal, and that starts with legalizing everyone. Legalization for all! We have a collective duty in this moment to stand together, to unite all who can be united, and to fight for a future that belongs to all of us.”

Chicago, IL – Dozens of community members gathered on Thursday, January 29 at Malcolm X Community College to demand city officials hold Chicago Police Department (CPD) officers accountable for their violence against Black and brown communities and collaboration with Immigrants and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The Community Commission for Public Safety and Accountability (CCPSA) set this year’s goals for itself, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA), and the CPD superintendent.

The meeting began with public comments. Community members demanded that the CCPSA publish all communications regarding CPD and ICE collaboration; an end CPD crowd control during immigration enforcement activities; an end to pretextual traffic stops; an end to CPD’s use of tactical teams; that the CCPSA choose a candidate for COPA head that has a strong record of being pro-accountability; and the removal of all current and former Oathkeepers and other members of white supremacist groups from the police force.

Omar Flores, co-chair of the Immigrant Rights Working Committee (IRWC) of the Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression (CAARPR) and a survivor of ICE’s violence, described the varied forms of harassment he has experienced.

“These things should not be allowed! We see plenty of instances when CPD is supposedly coming out, when the people are showing their righteous anger at what is happening, we see CPD do nothing when it comes to ICE violating our rights,” Flores said.

“It’s your guys’ job to be creative in this moment, because people’s lives are literally counting on it, as we’re seeing in Minneapolis,” Flores urged the CCPSA.

Brian Young, Jr., a resident of the historically Black and brown 25th Police District, expressed their disappointment at the CCPSA's history of inaction.

“We've been coming here since 2024, when Dexter Reed was killed by police officers over pretextual traffic stops, when this young man was killed and gunned down like a fucking animal in the streets,” Young Jr. said. “I organized and I came here with the community to demand an end to pretextual traffic stops – that was pushed onto the fucking backburner.”

CAARPR leader Kayla Nguyen described the CCPSA’s hesitance to investigate violations of the Welcoming City Ordinance despite 1500 people demanding an end to CPD and ICE collaboration at the CCPSA special listening session on January 8.

“We want collaborators addressed publicly, and we want them to face meaningful consequences now, because it is a shame that this city continues to wait to take action on wrongs the people know to be true,” Nguyen affirmed. “Why must the people of Chicago fight both our local law enforcement and ICE at the same time? The protection of CPD, not for our people, but for ICE, emboldens these federal killers and results in injuries to our Black and brown communities.”

The CCPSA then voted on their strategic priorities for 2026. These included a new traffic stop policy, preventative alternatives to public safety, and more accountability for collaborators with federal immigration enforcement.

Sandra Wortham was the only commissioner to vote “Nay” to the final priority regarding CPD-ICE collaboration, to raucous booing from the audience. Wortham demanded that the audience remember their decorum, to which audience members shouted, “Maybe you should remember who you protect and serve!”

The CCPSA additionally elected interim COPA chief LaKenya White to the permanent COPA chief position, who accepted all of the presented goals and strategic priorities, as did CPD Superintendent Larry Snelling.

Community members left the meeting hopeful regarding the strategic priorities, but resolved to continue to attend the next CCPSA meeting on Thursday, February 26 to hold the CCPSA accountable to these promised goals.

Portland, OR – On February 1, over 1000 Portlanders protested outside of Portland City Hall to stand against the killing of Alex Pretti, Renee Good and all those murdered by ICE, and to demand city government revoke the permit for the Portland ICE facility. The protest, organized by Portland Contra Las Deportaciones marched two miles from city hall to the Portland ICE facility.

Speaker Holly Brown called out Portland Mayor Keith Wilson and city councilors, saying months of cries to shut down the facility have been met with “not only inaction, but deliberate stalling, condescension, and lies.”

Protesters chanted “Do your jobs!” targeting Wilson and other city officials. Another rally speaker, Beatriz Ibarra, noted Custom Border Patrol agents shot two Portland residents just one day after Renee Good was murdered in Minneapolis. “Our mayor and city council send us nothing more than thoughts and prayers, while ICE agents rampage our streets,” Ibarra said.

Once at the ICE facility, furious protesters stormed the driveway, occupying the street and gated entrance. They began banging on the walls, shaking the gate, yelling “We aren’t scared of you!” as agents began shooting projectiles from the roof into the crowd.

ICE’s initial violent attempts at crowd control did not deter protesters. When federal officers opened the gates, they launched tear gas canisters and flash bangs into the crowd. One protester described the scene, saying “it was like a war zone.”

Just the day before, federal agents gassed a crowd of thousands, including families and union leaders, sparking public outrage. The increasing use of chemical weapons in the heart of Southwest Portland increases the pressure on city officials to take action to shut down the facility.

Tear gas used against protesters on Sunday spread throughout SW Portland, even crossing the Willamette River impacting neighborhoods on the East side. Despite the volume of gas being deployed, a large crowd stood their ground outside the ICE facility until after midnight.

In response to the chemical warfare used against protesters, Mayor Keith Wilson put out a statement telling ICE agents to resign and stating he will begin implementing fees on the facility. Protesters cried out that this is not enough and will not solve the problem. They remain undeterred in their demand to close down the facility.

Miami, FL – In the wake of the ICE murders of Keith Porter, Jr., Renee Nicole Good,and Alex Pretti, protesters in Miami gathered at Torch of Friendship calling for an end to ICE terror. Dozens gathered in solidarity with the people of Minneapolis and demand that ICE get out of their own community, with slogans such as “In the Miami heat ICE will melt.”

Local activist Arianna Betancourt spoke about her personal experience with her father being detained by ICE during a routine check-in. Since October 2025, her father has been imprisoned in the Everglades concentration camp, “Alligator Alcatraz.” During her speech at the rally, Betancourt called on the Miami community to rise up in the face of ICE terror, saying, “Let's stand together and make a change, because there are more of us than there are of them!”

Early in the day, students and members of the student-led coalition, ICEBreakers FIU, at Florida International University staged a sit-in calling for an end to the university's partnership with ICE through the 287(g) agreement.

Carlton Daley, co-chair of Young Democratic Socialists of America (YDSA) FIU and an organizer of the demonstration stated, “In protest of FIU's continual escalation of ICE presence on campus and in solidarity with Minneapolis, YDSAFIU and ICEBreakers, a coalition of political organizations designed to combat ICE, mobilized roughly 150 attendees to a peaceful demonstration of resistance. If FIU continues their relentless assaults against its working class students and faculty, we will continue to galvanize the masses against their oppression.”

In June of 2025, the city of Miami voted to sign on to the 287(g) agreement that allows local police to act as immigration agents, despite massive public outcry. As of late 2025, there have been more than 10,000 kidnappings by ICE in collaboration with local and state law enforcement, in what Governor Ron DeSantis calls “Operation Tidal Wave.”

Still, the resounding call from Miami, a city where more than 60% of the residents are immigrants, is “ICE out now!

Tallahassee, FL- On Saturday, January 31, the Tally Coalition Against Trump rallied outside the Florida Capitol building with more than 450 people.

They were joined by groups like the Tallahassee Immigrant Rights Alliance, the Tallahassee Community Action Committee, Tallahassee Students for a Democratic Society, Power Up People, and others to demand an end to the city’s 287(g) agreement and stand in solidarity with protesters in Minneapolis and around the country.

“We are fighting for something greater than us. We are fighting against the brutality of ICE,” said Justin Jordan, president of FAMU SDS.

Minneapolis has been a hotspot for ICE violence, being the crime scene of Renee Nicole Good and Alex Pretti’s murder. ICE and Border Patrol in Minneapolis have taken children, such as five-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos, whose photo of him in a blue bunny hat while being detained by ICE went viral, as bait to detain their parents. Inspired by the bravery of the citizens of Minneapolis, the Tallahassee Coalition Against took immediate action.

Brandon Beckett, the secretary of Tallahassee Immigrant Rights Alliance, stated, “Through these tragic events, the people of Minneapolis have not responded with silence, they have responded with strength.”

Tallahassee has been getting used to emergency actions for some time now. The Trump administration and ICE’s increasing violence have meant that there have been murders and kidnappings across the country, and not just in big cities like Minneapolis, but also here in Tallahassee. These emergency actions show no signs of slowing down as the violence against our community continues.

The large crowd chanted, “No hate! No fear! Immigrants are welcome here!”

In May, an ICE raid targeting construction workers in Tallahassee detained over 100 people. Tallahassee State College and Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University have signed 287(g) agreements, allowing their police departments to work with ICE. The largest college in Tallahassee, Florida State University, has done the same behind closed doors.

The city of Tallahassee has signed its own 287(g), allowing the Tallahassee Police Department to collaborate with ICE. Despite massive public backlash, the motion to rescind the agreement in October 2025 failed on a narrow vote. On January 14, city commissioners ended the meeting during public comment, and capitol police harassed members who were holding 8 x 11” signs denouncing the sale of land containing enslaved people's graves to the Capitol City Country Club, repressing their freedom of speech. The commissioners refused to hear their constituents' detestation of ICE and 287(g).

With Florida’s legislative session beginning and a slew of repressive bills on the way, organizers in Tallahassee know that the struggle is not waning but reaching its most critical point. Bills like CS/HB 17 that increase criminal charges for battery on law enforcement officers, and HB 49, which suppresses political activity on campus, aim to slow and repress the anti-ICE and legalization for all the movement.

On the other hand, bills like HB 419, which would prohibit ICE and other law enforcement from using face coverings, also being heard in the upcoming legislative session.

The Tally Coalition Against Trump will continue to advocate against ICE brutality and violence.

Chicago, IL – On Saturday, January 31, surrounded by community activists who have been in the streets defending immigrants against the occupation by ICE troops, Mayor Brandon Johnson signed a historic executive order.

The executive order makes Chicago the first city to require the police to investigate and refer federal agents for criminal prosecution of felony violations.

“Nobody is above the law. There is no such thing as ‘absolute immunity’ in America,” said Mayor Brandon Johnson. “The lawlessness of Trump’s militarized immigration agents puts the lives and well-being of every Chicagoan in immediate danger. With today’s order, we are putting ICE on notice in our city. Chicago will not sit idly by while Trump floods federal agents into our communities and terrorizes our residents.”

The federal government has stated they are planning another ICE surge in the Chicago area in March. Mayor Johnson’s call for prosecution is in response to absence of legal repercussions in the wake of the shooting of Marimar Martinez in Chicago and the killings of Silverio Villegas González in the Chicago suburb of Franklin Park, and Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Minneapolis.

Frank Chapman of the Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression said, “I was proud to stand with Mayor Johnson yesterday when he signed an historic executive order ordering CPD to actively engage in holding ICE agents accountable by filing complaints with the States Attorney office.”

State’s Attorney Eileen Burke is well known for her failure to stand up to ICE. She has dodged demands to investigate and close the Broadview ICE facility, notorious for reports of inhumane treatment of detainees. Burke also refused to prosecute the ICE officers who killed Silverio Villegas González, an immigrant worker shot to death by an ICE officer after dropping his child off at school in Franklin Park in September.

Milwaukee, WI – On the cold evening of January 30, the Milwaukee Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression (MAARPR) held a vigil at All People’s Gathering Church. The space is not only a worship center but a historic refuge for victims of state violence, having supported the family of Dontre Hamilton when he was killed by police in 2014 at a park just two miles south. Once again, All People’s held space for stolen lives as organizers and community members mourned the nine people already killed by ICE in 2026.

Sam Baragan, a member of MAARPR and Comite Sin Fronteras, welcomed attendees and shared her personal experience under Trump, explaining “I am a DACA-mented woman, and the current climate around ICE has filled me with fear, anxiety and deep emotional distress. I find myself constantly worried, not only for myself, but for my community, my friends, my neighbors, and the people I love. This vigil is a pause. A moment to come together in community.”

Pastor Evan McVann then prayed over the congregation to start the night and recited Leviticus 19:33-34: “When an immigrant resides among you in your land, do not mistreat them. The immigrants residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were immigrants once.”

The open mic portion began and people from all over the community offered original songs, stories from the border, and words of empowerment.

Brian Verdin, an original member of 1973 MAARPR, recited the nine names: Alex Pretti, Renee Good, Keith Porter, Heber Sánchez Domínguez, Victor Manuel Diaz, Parady La, Luis Beltrán Yáñez–Cruz, Luis Gustavo Núñez Cáceres and Geraldo Lunas Campos.

Verdin reassured the crowd that “the heat of the people will melt the ICE,” a message received with resounding applause. The music then continued, courtesy of the Milwaukee Justice Singers as they sang Hold On, “Hold on my dear ones, here comes the dawn.”

To close, youth educator Casey Serrano (MAARPR) offered ways the community can continue to band together and organize after the program. The main highlight was Barrio Walks with the Alliance, or canvassing sessions on the city’s South Side, which recently passed out 500 “Know your Rights” flyers in just 30 minutes that week with the help of community members. Serrano shared “Recently, I find myself praying. Praying for my students, for my community.”

Serrano then called for all those gathered to “be the hands and feet of Christ. We must have the wisdom and clarity to see things for what they are and what must be done, and have the perseverance to carry it out.”

Jacksonville, FL – Over 1000 people marched through downtown and packed the courtyard outside the federal courthouse here on January 27, demanding justice for Alex Pretti, an ICU nurse killed by ICE agents in Minneapolis.

The emergency action, called by the Jacksonville Immigrant Rights Alliance (JIRA), came after Pretti’s killing on January 24. Speakers connected his death to the killings of Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis and Renee Good, and to local immigration enforcement through the 287(g) agreement between U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO).

Organizers urged the crowd to turn anger into organization, explicitly calling on people to join JIRA to build power and fight to end the 287(g) pact.

“The same force that murdered Alex is terrorizing our city through 287(g) traffic stops and raids. We are fighting the same enemy,” said JIRA organizer Maria García.

As temperatures dropped during the event, protesters were undeterred and a participant suggested a new chant to the crowd: “We’re not cold, we’re not afraid! Alex taught us to be brave!” It was quickly taken up by the entire assembly as they marched through the streets of downtown Jacksonville.

“I do have family that is undocumented. Both my parents were undocumented. So growing up, I lived in constant fear,” said local participant Crystal Aguilar. “Seeing so many people come out today in support of families like mine is amazing.”

The rally ended with a clear call to action: Unite all who we can to beat back ICE, end the deportations, and dismantle Trump's racist, reactionary agenda.

San Jose, CA – On January 24, In the wake of the killing of the two community observers in Minneapolis by ICE – Renee Good and Alex Pretti – CSO (Community Service Organization) San Jose organized and rally and march that took over 200 people to the streets in solidarity with Minneapolis, demanding an end to the ICE terror and to deportations.

The rally began at the Mexican Heritage Plaza, a cultural center for the Chicano community in Eastside San Jose, with chants demanding an end to the deportations and ICE out of San Jose.

Jose Solorio with CSO San Jose spoke on the recent killings, stating, “ICE is on a killing rampage, escalating their attacks. More than 30 people have died while in ICE custody.”

Solorio continued, “It can be you or me tomorrow. Our citizenship status does not protect us from the Gestapo wing of Trump’s dilapidated empire.”

Andy Schaefer from San Jose Against War went further in “drawing the parallels that are undeniable between the domestic terrorists known as ICE kidnapping and ripping families apart.”

Schaefer continued, “The same tactics that the IOF utilize such as racial profiling, mass surveillance, crowd control, media coordination and more are [being] used by the DHS and ICE against our immigrant neighbors.”

Highlighting the oppression faced by Chicanos and Latinos, Lyla Salinas from the Freedom Road Socialist Organization stated, “We are being nationally oppressed and have been for hundreds of years.”

Salinas ended by saying, “Now more than ever you should get organized and fight back against Trump's billionaire agenda!”

After the program, around 300 people took to the streets chanting “Lucha si, migra no” and “When immigrant rights are under attack, what do we do? Stand up, fight back!”

The action ended with a call to action for the upcoming “ICE out of the Super Bowl” protest, which will be on Sunday, February 8 at 3 p.m., blocks away from where the Super Bowl will be occurring at Levi's Stadium.

Los Angeles, CA – On Saturday, January 24, Centro CSO answered an emergency call to action from the Legalization For All Network in response to ICE and US Border Patrol's second open murder in Minneapolis. Over 100 people gathered at Mariachi Plaza for a rally and vigil to stand in solidarity with Minneapolis and demand justice for Alex Pretti, an ICU nurse and community observer who was attacked and brutally murdered.

While the Trump administration and Border Patrol Commander Greg Bovino tried to paint Alex Pretti as a domestic terrorist who was at the scene of a raid to massacre federal agents, evidence from three videos with different point of views showed he was trying to protect a woman shoved to the ground before he was pepper sprayed, beaten and then killed. Alex Pretti’s murder comes approximately two weeks after an ICE agent shot and killed Renee Good.

Nadia Topete of Centro CSO started the rally and uplifted the names of five-year-old Liam Ramos and his father who were kidnapped by ICE on January 20 and used as bait to take more family members from his home when he rang the doorbell. “This is unacceptable!” said Topete. “Shame on the United States for letting this ongoing harassment towards Raza and terrorizing our communities and for kidnapping our brothers and sisters!”

Carlos Montes of the Freedom Road Socialist Organization and Centro CSO spoke about how Trump’s racist policies against immigrants comes from how the United States is based upon the national oppression of Chicanos. According to Montes, putting an end to these attacks requires revolution.

Juan Parrino of Los Rucos said, “America declares that it has an immigration problem, well it does and it all began in 1492 with the arrival of the first Europeans. Masked federal agents occupying our cities and attacking protesters and killing peaceful observers, I say ya basta! Only the people can save the people!”

Eloisa Galindo of Eastside Padres Contra la Privatización spoke about how Trump and privatizers are attacking public schools. Trump’s immigration policies have led to fear and a decrease in enrollment, causing budget losses and teacher cuts. Sergio Flores, the brother of Jeremy Flores who was murdered by LAPD last summer, connected the murders of Pretti and Good to police brutality in Los Angeles.

Sol Marquez of the Legalization for All uplifted the names of the many people killed by ICE before raising the demand for Legalization for All stated, “Someone once asked why legalization for all? Right, because they have the power to do it right now! That’s what we want legislation across the board for all 12 million undocumented.”

The crowd then went to the sidewalk waving signs, flags and banners chanting, “Justice for Alex Pretti” and “ICE out of LA!”

Madison, WI – On Tuesday, January 27, over 1000 students from UW-Madison and the surrounding area joined Madison Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) to protest the murders of Alex Pretti, Renee Good and Keith Porter by ICE agents. Students rallied for ICE out of the Midwest and demanded that UW-Madison be made a sanctuary campus.

Protesters filled Madison’s Library Mall in -10 degree wind chill, chanting “ICE ICE will be beat, when the people hit the street!” as they settled in to hear the first speech of the night from Jewish voices for Peace on the importance of Holocaust Remembrance Day and the parallels with current ICE operations. Then there was a moment of silence to commemorate the victims of ICE.

After the moment of silence were chants from the crowd, calling for “Justice for Keith Porter! Justice for Renee Good! Justice for Alex Pretti!” The explosive energy from the crowd was emblematic of a large portion of the student body, whose calls for the abolition of ICE have been heard throughout the week.

In the final speech of the night, Luca Motivala, co-chair of Madison SDS, closed his speech with the remark, “We will not forget those they murdered, those who will be murdered, the faces and names and memories will live on eternally. We will neither forgive nor forget those who perpetrated this violence; they believe they are invincible, untouchable. It will not be that way. Their day will come!”

Students ended the rally with calls to “Shut it down” if UW-Madison administration did not implement sanctuary campus policies.

Green Bay, WI – On Sunday, January 26, over 1500 people took to the streets of Green Bay to march in protest of the execution of Alex Pretti and the ICE occupation of Minneapolis. Despite freezing temperatures and bitter winds, Green Bay residents showed up en masse.

On January 24, Alex Pretti was beaten and murdered by ICE agents in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Video evidence has spread throughout the country, sparking widespread protest and calls for justice.

Pretti was previously a Green Bay resident and graduate of Preble High School. The anger and grief of the community he was once a part of was felt deeply. We saw this in the largest crowd turnout in months, where a sidewalk march became a march shutting down whole streets.

This event was organized by the Green Bay Anti-War Committee (GBAC) with many community organizations coming in attendance and solidarity.

Before the march, GBAC member Daniel Castillo spoke to the crowd, “He was not a domestic terrorist, he was not an assassin, he was not trying to massacre law enforcement. He was defending his community from a federal agency that has run rampant throughout Minneapolis and is responsible for the extrajudicial killing of Renee Good.”

After speeches, protesters took to the streets. The Green Bay Police Department tried their best to stop this march, attempting to block off roads and intervening with the organizers, but the people carried the march on undeterred. Chants like “ICE out now” echoed through the streets of Green Bay, in what was clearly the largest demonstration against the Trump agenda in years.

New York, NY — Over 1000 New Yorkers took the streets on January 27 after the execution of Alex Pretti by Border Patrol in Minneapolis a few days before. Since Pretti’s murder, hundreds of thousands of people around the country have mobilized despite a winter storm to defend their neighbors and fight back against racist attacks by federal agents.

Organizers from New York Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression (NYAARPR) began with a rally at the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) field office in Lower Manhattan.

NYAARPR Chair Shivani Ishwar reminded the crowd to “not forget the other lives that have been cruelly extinguished by ICE.” Last year, the Border Patrol killed at least 17 people. ICE killed at least 33 people last year and nine people this year already. Border patrol shot another person in Arizona on the morning of the action.

Pretti’s was the second January murder in Minneapolis. The New York Alliance had organized a protest on January 8 after the brutal murder of Renee Good. In both actions, the New York Alliance demanded the immediate removal of all federal agents from New York City.

Daniel Koh, another NYAARPR speaker, contextualized resistance to ICE in the wider struggle for liberation. He said, “This fight is bigger than just New York. It’s bigger than ICE, it’s bigger than Trump. It’s the whole rotten system. And it won’t go down without a fight, but that’s why we’re here!” Attacks on immigrants reflect the United States’s oppression at home and warmongering abroad.

The New York Alliance began a march towards a Hilton hotel in Tribeca, where organizers from NYC ICE Watch had planned a disruption and occupation of the lobby. More than 100 people took the Hilton lobby with photographs of those murdered by federal agents.

The New York Alliance rallied outside the hotel, chanting, “It is right to rebel, ICE and Hilton go to hell!” A speaker from NYC ICE Watch explained how Hilton continues to house ICE agents, profiteering from attacks on immigrants. Hilton even revoked franchise status from a Minneapolis franchisee exercising their right to refuse service to ICE.

The NYPD arrested over 70 protesters and attempted to divide and kettle the rally outside. The New York Alliance continued the march, chanting, “NYPD, KKK, ICE and feds, they’re all the same!”

The march ended at Washington Square Park, where Ishwar ended with a message “To ICE, to the feds, to Kristi Noem, to Donald Trump, to Hilton and the other corporations that enable ICE activity — this is unacceptable! We will not allow the open terror you have sown in our communities! We will kick ICE out of everywhere, and we will put an end to this racist, repressive agency!”

The New York Alliance will continue to organize against the NYPD and the federal agents occupying New York City.
