Chicago grants permits to rally, march against NATO/G8

<![CDATA[Will Secret Service try to stop protesters?

Chicago IL – In a surprise move Jan. 12, the City of Chicago granted permits to the Coalition Against NATO/G8 War and Poverty Agenda (CANG8) for a rally and march on May 19. CANG8 is mobilizing against the summits of NATO and the G8 occurring in Chicago that weekend.

!--more--

“Mayor Emanuel responded to public opinion, which clearly supported our right to protest against NATO’s wars and the poverty that the G8 is pushing onto working people through their cutbacks,” said Joe Iosbaker of CANG8. “It’s the only explanation that makes sense.”

The coalition had been building broad support for their demands for permits since June, 2011 when President Obama announced the summits of bankers, generals and heads of state of the wealthiest nations. CANG8 is planning a family-friendly demonstration to take their message to within sight and sound of the McCormick Place where the summits are scheduled.

Given with one hand, taken with the other?

However, the cover letters from the city that accompanied the permits threaten that they might be revoked. The cover letters state that Secret Service could “designate specific security zones or areas.”

This threat is very real. For months, the Chicago Police Department and Secret Service have been issuing “security assessments” to downtown schools, churches, businesses and cultural institutions saying that the protestors are so violent that everyone should leave the area during the events.

When anti-war activists first submitted an application for the Daley Plaza, it was denied with a memo that no permits would be granted for public assembly during the period of the summits. A public pressure campaign mounted by CANG8 compelled the city to backtrack on that as well.

Both of these reveal that the joint city-federal agency overseeing the summits want to stop protests from reaching the eyes and ears of the rich and powerful who will be at McCormick Place in May.

In response to the threat of a denial, Iosbaker responded, “The Secret Service should not try to take away what the city of Chicago has finally granted.”

Resistance to Emanuel’s Threatened Restrictions on Protests

The granting of the permits is set against a backdrop of growing opposition to the repressive moves of the mayor. Mayor Emanuel is demanding changes to city ordinances to make protests harder to organize and to threaten anyone who speaks up with enormous fines and police repression. He proposed these changes in mid-December and declared he wanted the city council to adopt them at their next possible meeting.

At first, the city council leaders lined up to say “yes” to the mayor, but a pressure campaign that drew in Occupy Chicago, SEIU, the Teachers Union and civil liberties advocates forced the politicians to reverse themselves. On Jan. 12, the mayor’s office was also met with a rebellion by alderpersons who, for the first time, have said “no” to Emanuel.

In describing how the granting of permits impacted on the debate in the city council, CANG8 activist Andy Thayer noted, "The issuance of this permit shows that the current ordinances, while not perfect, are more than adequate for large public events in our city, and that the mayor should rescind his proposed anti-protester ordinances.”

The city council is scheduled to vote on Emanuel's ordinance changes at its meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 18. Two committees of the city council are scheduled to discuss the changes on Jan. 17. CANG8 is calling for a national call in day to demand Emanuel stop his efforts to deny the right to protest.

#ChicagoIL #AntiwarMovement #NATO #G8 #CoalitionAgainstNATOG8WarPovertyAgenda #MayorEmanuel

div id="sharingbuttons.io"/div]]>

They were there with a message that Pat Hunt of CANG8 said was simple, “that the city publicly commit to provide…permits that meet the internationally recognized standard for the right to assemble; that we be within sight and sound…” of the meeting of NATO and the G8 in May, 2012.

Hunt continued, insisting that “Police Superintendent McCarthy refrain from making threats of mass arrests.” She was referring to the many times since July that Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy has announced in the press that Chicago’s 13,000 police officers are being trained to repress dissent when the generals, bankers and heads of state convene here.

Representing the city were officials from the permit office of the Transportation Department and Commander Debra Kirby of the Chicago Police Department, the police department point person for the NATO/G8 summit.

Andy Thayer of CANG8 pointed out that the business group that is the host committee for the NATO/G8 summit has been given $1 million in taxpayer money to prepare for the event.
Massive protests planned for NATO/G8 Summit

<![CDATA[Fight Back! interviews Joe Iosbaker, the Chicago spokesperson for the United Anti War Coalition, on the protests that will coincide with the NATO/G8 Summit that is scheduled for May, 2012.

!--more--

Fight Back!: Why are the NATO/G8 protests so important?

Joe Iosbaker: The summit of NATO/G8 will be a meeting of the world’s worst generals and
biggest bankers together in a U.S. city for the first time in history. For ten years, the U.S.
NATO have waged war on Afghanistan, killing tens of thousands. There is growing opposition
here to that war.

On top of this, the U.S. and European bankers are responsible for the economic mess that the world is in. In Chicago, working people are under attack by the rich. The new mayor, Rahm Emanuel, is closing schools and laying-off hundreds of workers because of a budget crisis. We can’t stop housing foreclosures, we can’t find jobs for the unemployed, yet we can afford to host this summit, which will cost the city tens of millions of dollars. It’s disgraceful. There has to be an outcry by the anti-war movement and the people of Chicago, as well as folks across the country and internationally.

Fight Back!: Tell us about the Aug. 28 conference and what is planned for the summit.

Iosbaker: The meeting was inspiring. 200 people were there and everyone felt the same: the
anti-war movement was coming together with labor and communities in struggle to plan this
historic protest. One of the speakers was Meredith Aby, who helped lead the largest anti-war
protest in the history of the Midwest – the march on the Republican National Convention in
2008\. Meredith is one of us whose home was raided by the FBI one year ago. The Department
of Justice investigation against anti-war activists began at the protest against the RNC. But we
refuse to be intimidated or silent while our government wages these unjust wars; we’re going
to march against NATO and the G8.

There were leaders from the Puerto Rican, Black, Arab and Muslim communities, including Malik Mujahid of the Muslim Peace Coalition; Alejandro Molina of the Boricua Human Rights Network; and Mark Clement, who spent over 20 years in prison after being tortured by a Chicago Police officer. Alex Han, a leader in the labor union-backed group, Stand Up Chicago was there as well. They all want what the anti-war movement wants: Jobs, housing, healthcare, education, pensions and the environment: Not war. They want justice. We agreed to form a coalition, both locally and nationally, to bring the broadest forces together to march, not once, but twice against NATO and the G8. We will march on the opening day of the summit, Tuesday, May 15, 2012. Then we’ll assemble for an even larger protest on Saturday, May 19.

There are also plans for an educational counter-summit, to put forward a vision for a different world, where war is done away with. That world would not have governments inflict pain on
the poor and workers. The word that the bankers use is “austerity.” A person who is austere
is stern or cold to other people. A government that practices austerity takes food out of the
mouths of the children of the poor, in order that corporations make enough profit to keep their
investors happy.

Fight Back!: What are the Chicago Principles?

Iosbaker: There are many forces that oppose war and oppression. The largest number of us
will organize a permitted march: We are demanding that the city of Chicago give us a permit
to march to the McCormick Place, the likely location of the summit. Some who protest will
risk arrest in order to make a stronger statement against the masters of war and austerity.
The Chicago Principles adopted by our coalition are a statement that we will keep our debates
with other political forces internal to our movement. We will not allow the Chicago Police
Department or the FBI to defeat the solidarity that exists between us. Everyone who protests
NATO and the G8 is on the same side.

Fight Back!: How can people get involved in building these two protests?

Iosbaker: Fight Back! readers can write to info@fightbacknews.org to find out who in your area is organizing. You should also plan to attend the protest in your city on the tenth anniversary of the US/NATO war in Afghanistan. In your union, community group, or student organization, start planning to come out in May, 2012 to march with us. Soon we will have a website and email listserv, leaflets and local meetings to help make plans.

#ChicagoIL #AntiwarMovement #CapitalismAndEconomy #Protest #NATO #JoeIosbaker #G8

div id="sharingbuttons.io"/div]]>

Mayor Emanuel: We demand permits to march!: Anti-war and other groups respond to threats of mass arrests at NATO/G8 protests

<![CDATA[Joe Iosbaker speaking at Chicago press conference demanding right to to protest")

Chicago, IL - People from two dozen organizations attended a press conference here, July 28, in front of the office of Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel. They were there with one immediate goal: to demand permits to march on the May 2012 summit of NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) and the G8 (Group of Eight).

!--more--

"Why are we here so early in this process, ten months before the NATO/G8 summit?" asked Joe Iosbaker of the United National Antiwar Committee (UNAC). To answer the question, he held up a copy of a recent Chicago Sun-Times.

On behalf of UNAC, Iosbaker had started the process of applying for protest permits in June when the Obama administration announced the summit would be held in Chicago May 15th to 22nd next year. The response from the Emanuel administration came sooner than expected, when the Sun-Times ran a front page story in which the Superintendent of Police, Garry McCarthy, said he was \preparing the 13,000 officers under his command for mass arrests\ of protestors. McCarthy also made it clear that there would be federal agencies involved in the repression of protestors as well.

The 40 activists on Thursday delivered a \letter to Emanuel\ that was written by a committee of local anti-war and community activists. The letter demanded:

\- Grant us permits to rally and march to the NATO/G8 summit
\- Guarantee our civil liberties
\- Guarantee us there will be no spying, infiltration of organizations or other attacks by the FBI or partner law enforcement agencies

The right to protest against war and austerity

Iosbaker explained that, "The wars and economic policies of the NATO and G8 nations are not just and will be met by protest." Following him, speaker after speaker rose to add their voices.

Jokarhi Shakur, a student leader with the Save City Colleges (SCC) coalition, reminded Emanuel that students, faculty and workers in the City Colleges were opposed to the budget cuts coming down on them. Shakur and the SCC had been the first group in town to protest the new mayor, having protested at the inauguration in May.

The peace movement in Chicago has a number of prominent activists, but none who are more recognized around the country and around the world than Kathy Kelly of Voices for Creative Non-Violence. She spoke of the 10 years of war that the Afghan people had suffered under NATO direction.

One of the biggest rounds of applause was received by Mark Clement of the Campaign to End the Death Penalty. Clement spent 28 years in prison after a Chicago cop tortured him into confessing to a crime he didn't commit. The repressive and violent nature of the Chicago Police Department is clear from his story and those of the many other victims of police torture.

Andy Thayer of the Chicago Coalition Against War and Racism (CCAWR), and the Gay Liberation Network, pointed out that it was this history of police abuse that caused the city of Chicago to lose its bid to host the 2016 Olympics. He recalled the years that CCAWR spent fighting for the right to protest against the administration of Mayor Daley. In addition, he talked about the unlawful mass arrest of 800 marchers carried out by 2,000 riot police on the night the Iraq War began in 2003, and the long class action legal battle that was undertaken.

Tom Burke of the national Committee to Stop FBI Repression remarked that the mobilizations against NATO and G8 would put Chicago in the forefront of the struggle against war and austerity. "Rahm Emanuel seems to think he's in charge of an empire, like a new Napoleon. But Chicago belongs to the people of this city, and we're going to march, we're going to bring our families and our children, and we will invite our friends from around the country to join us in Chicago."

Burke is one of the 23 anti-war and international solidarity activists targeted by raids and a grand jury investigation that started in September 2010. That experience was on the minds of the activists when the third demand was added to the letter to Emanuel.

Joe Lombardo, the co-chair of UNAC, flew in from Albany, New York to speak at the press conference. He warned that McCarthy's statements "set the stage for violence on the part of the police." He also reported that the Dept. of Justice has inquired about the August 28th meeting called by UNAC and local anti-war activists to form the coalition to lead the protests in the spring. "They're trying to silence our voices, but we won't be silenced."

At the end of the press conference, Pat Hunt of Chicago Area Code Pink and Chicago Area Peace Action presented the letter to an aide to the mayor, and informed the woman that she would be getting a phone call in one week to learn the administration's response. "This is only the beginning of our fight," Hunt declared to cheers from the group.

#ChicagoIL #AntiwarMovement #NATO #CommitteeToStopFBIRepression #RahmEmanuel #G8

div id="sharingbuttons.io"/div]]>

SEIU Local 73 supports right to protest NATO/G8

<![CDATA[Christine Boardman speaking at press conference against FBI repression")

Chicago, IL - On July 16, the Executive Board of Local 73 of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) voted unanimously that anti-war protesters had the right to march against the NATO/G8 summit being held in Chicago in May of 2012.

!--more--

Joe Iosbaker, Executive Board member, proposed the resolution, explaining, “Mayor Rahm Emanuel will be hosting this convention of the war makers who have caused so many deaths and the financial ministers responsible for the world economic crisis.” Holding up the front page of the Chicago Sun Times from the day before, Iosbaker showed the workers the front page headline, “Chaos Control.” “We’re planning a permitted march and Superintendent of Police McCarthy is threatening us in the paper that he’ll respond to protests with mass arrests. We won’t be intimidated,” said Iosbaker.

Representing over 25,000 public employees, Local 73 is currently engaged in a big fight with Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel over jobs. On July 15, Emanuel announced plans to lay off over 600 workers, including 350 members of Local 73. Emanuel claimed this was needed to close a $30 million budget deficit for the city of Chicago.

President Christine Boardman and Secretary Treasurer Matt Brandon criticized Mayor Emanuel for moving to lay off these workers without negotiating with the unions. Further, Brandon had presented to the Mayor proposals for savings of $10 million without layoffs. These were ignored by Emanuel.

The city of Chicago is home to some of the richest people and corporations on earth. Hosting the NATO/G8 summit will cost the city millions of dollars.
Chicago, IL – On July 16, the Executive Board of Local 73 of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) voted unanimously that anti-war protesters had the right to march against the NATO/G8 summit being held in Chicago in May of 2012.

To accommodate the summit, Emanuel is forcing a restaurant association to move from the McCormick Place convention center that week. This will result in the loss of additional millions.

The protests were initiated by the United National Antiwar Committee. The call for the protest opposes endless wars and calls for billions spent on war and destruction to be spent instead on people’s needs for jobs, health care, housing and education.
