<![CDATA[Jess Sundin demands end to investigation of anti-war activists.")

Minneapolis, MN – About 200 people rallied at the Federal Building here, Sept. 24, to demand an end to the ongoing Justice Department investigation into anti-war and international solidarity activists.

!--more--

It has been two years since the Sept. 24, 2010 FBI raids on homes and offices of anti-war and international solidarity activists in Minneapolis, Chicago and Michigan. All told, 23 people were served subpoenas to appear at a grand jury investigating “material support for designated terrorist organizations.” None of the 23 has testified and there have been no indictments. But less than two months ago, Assistant U.S. Attorney Barry Jonas declared that the investigation is ongoing and refused to return much of the original materials seized from the Chicago Palestinian American community leader Hatem Abudayyeh and his family.

The Minneapolis protest was a part of a national week of actions organized by the Committee to Stop FBI Repression and the United States Palestinian Community Network (uspcn.org) to call for an end to this outrageous violation of civil rights and liberties.

Speakers at the protest included leaders from the Somali community and the labor, Palestine solidarity and anti-war movements.

Jess Sundin, of the Minnesota Committee to Stop FBI Repression and Freedom Road Socialist Organization told the crowd:

“Our strength in the face of government repression has already made a difference: First, we stopped Barry Jonas from locking up any one of the 23 people who refused to testify for his grand jury in Chicago. Then we helped our friend Carlos Montes beat back the FBI attempt to frame him up. Thanks to our work, Carlos is a free man today, who won’t spend one day wrongfully imprisoned for his anti-war and international solidarity work.
These victories were important, but I’m sorry to say, I think they were the warm up act. Two years ago, most of us thought all of this would move a lot faster. We thought formal charges would come quickly, and that by now, we’d have had our day in court. Some people might even believe that we’re free today, because Barry Jonas has given up. I wish that were the case, but if we take him at his word, he’s still coming after us.
They’ve invested a huge amount of resources to build a case against us: The undercover agent spied on us for more than two years, starting with the anti-war march on the RNC. Two years ago today, more than 70 FBI agents from 6 different districts carried out the coordinated raids, delivered subpoenas, and questioned our friends from California to North Carolina; and now, for more than three years, a secret grand jury in Chicago has been meeting with only the prosecutor and his witnesses. Federal prosecutors have a 90+% success rate in the grand jury process. And so, when the prosecutors say they are planning to bring multiple indictments against multiple people, it is almost certain that they will be successful.
You are the key to our defense. Together, we have to put enough pressure on the prosecutor, Barry Jonas, that he is compelled to end this witch hunt against activists. And that is why we are here today. And that is why we will come out again and again. We will stand together against this injustice, just as we continue to stand up against the inhumanity of U.S. wars.”

The protest in Minneapolis was organized by the Minnesota Committee to Stop FBI Repression, and endorsed by two dozen community, student and labor organizations.

Hassan Ali Mohamud, Director and Imam of the Minnesota Dawa Institute, condemns")

Palestine solidarity contingent at Sept. 24 protest.")

Protesters demand end to FBI / Grand Jury repression.")

#MinneapolisMN #HatemAbudayyeh #CarlosMontes #MinnesotaCommitteeToStopFBIRepression #AntiWar23 #PalestinianCommunityNetwork

div id="sharingbuttons.io"/div]]>

The contingent passed out thousands of flyers educating the public about the upcoming trial of Carlos Montes and the attacks on the 23 Midwest activists who have been targeted by FBI and grand Jury repression. They asked people along the parade route to call the Los Angeles District Attorney Cooley to demand that he drop the charges against Carlos Montes. The crowd was receptive and supportive. The Minnesota Committee to Stop FBI Repression built for their picket in solidarity with Montes on the first day his trial, May 15, as well as to invite people to come to the protest against NATO next weekend in Chicago.

Solidarity with Julian Assange

<![CDATA[Fight Back News Service is circulating the following statement from the Minnesota Committee to Stop FBI Repression on repression against Julian Assange.

!--more--

The Minnesota Committee to Stop FBI Repression expresses our solidarity for Julian Assange. Amy Goodman reported in the Guardian that WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has a sealed indictment in the U.S., according to leaked emails from Stratfor, an intelligence company. The emails were hacked by Anonymous and then published by WikiLeaks. The Guardian and other sources had already reported that a secret federal grand jury in Virginia was investigating Assange for allegedly violating the Espionage Act by publishing classified U.S. State Department documents.

This news brings to mind parallels with our situation. Our committee is organizing in solidarity with the 23 peace and international solidarity activists who have been subpoenaed to testify at a secret federal grand jury in Chicago that alleges material support for terrorism. This investigation is because of their activism.

We believe that the grand jury in the case of the Peace 23 was convened in August 2009, but we are unaware of whether or not it is still meeting. The prosecutors from the U.S. Attorney’s office in Chicago have told their lawyers repeatedly that they are expecting multiple indictments, but we don’t know when this will occur or if, like in Assange’s case, they have the indictments and are waiting until later to release them. Either way, the Peace 23 wake up every day not knowing if the FBI will be back their doors again - this time to take them into custody.

The grand juries that investigated Assange and that are or were investigating the Peace 23 are similar in many ways. Both meet in secret and are fundamentally undemocratic. Suspects and witnesses are subpoenaed to testify to the grand jury but no one is allowed representation by a lawyer. Both have a wide scope for their “investigation” and neither is limited by a judge or even by much of a time table. Not surprisingly, 99.9% of all federal defendants called before a federal grand jury are indicted, since the grand jury system has been designed to help prosecutors.

Another similarity is the political nature of these cases. Assange is being investigated for publicizing the truth about U.S. foreign policy and the Peace 23 are being targeted for opposing U.S. foreign policy.
<![CDATA[Protest against NDAA at Obama campaign headquarters, Feb. 3")

Minneapolis, MN – More than 75 people rallied here, Feb. 3, as a part of the National Day of Protest against the provision of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) that allows for indefinite detention without trial. The protest occurred outside the Obama campaign headquarters. President Obama signed this unconstitutional bill into law Dec. 31. According to Anh Pham of the Committee to Stop FBI Repression (CSFR), “This law allows the government to continue to oppress anyone who doesn’t agree with them.”

!--more--

Sam Richards of Occupy Minneapolis stated, “The NDAA of 2012 is the largest assault on our rights since the Patriot Act. Obama ran as a champion of civil liberties. We demand an end to the attack on our civil rights.”

This demand rang clear as activists joined in chants, speeches, guerrilla theater and an occupation of the Obama headquarter building as part of the direct action. The message of the protest was apparent, with signs such as “No war on our rights: No NDAA,” and chants like “Hey Obama, pay attention! We say no to indefinite detention!”

After hearing representatives from organizations such as the Committee to Stop FBI Repression, Occupy Minneapolis and the Anti-War Committee, protesters performed a skit to illustrate what the NDAA laws could look like. During speeches by activists, guerrilla actors dressed as military and FBI personnel attacked and hooded them, thus silencing the progressive voices. A member of the Anti-War Committee called out “I have a constitutional right to protest!” as an ‘FBI agent’ threatened her and led her out of the demonstration.

Then the crowd entered the Obama headquarters building, to press their demands for civil liberties. Many stayed to occupy the headquarters for over two hours and were successful in getting a future meeting set up with state director of the Obama campaign.

Jess Sundin of the Committee to Stop FBI Repression, whose home was raided by the FBI on September 24, 2010 stated, “The government is already engaging in attacks on anti-war and international solidarity activists.
<![CDATA[Jess Sundin speaks at December 15 Minneapolis CSFR forum")

Minneapolis, MN – Billed as a report back from the first national conference of the Committee to Stop FBI Repression (CSFR), more than 50 people gathered for here Dec. 15 for an exciting event that featured veteran Chicano activist Carlos Montes, a moving message from Noor Elashi and an important speech by anti-war leader Jess Sundin.

!--more--

Carlos Montes, who spoke to the meeting via Skype from Los Angeles, related how the FBI orchestrated a raid on his home. He talked about his work organizing the massive march on the 2008 Republican National Convention and his encounter with the undercover law enforcement agent “Karen Sullivan,” whose lies led to FBI raids and grand jury subpoenas for anti-war and international solidarity activists.

Montes, who faces up to 18 years in prison on false charges that claim he violated state firearm laws, said that he took heart from the solidarity that he has received from across the country.

Noor Elashi sent a message to the meeting about her father Ghassan Elashi, who is one of the Holy Land Five. The Holy Land Foundation was one of the largest Muslim charities in the U.S. After a series of outrageously unjust court actions, her father is serving a 65-year sentence.

Speech by Jess Sundin

Jess Sundin, a member of the Twin Cites based Anti-War Committee and whose home was raided by the FBI stated in part,

“It has been almost 15 months since the FBI ransacked our homes and the AWC office, searching for evidence to charge us with material support to FTOs \[Foreign Terrorist Organizations\]. The Committee to Stop FBI Repression was organized to build a defense around those whose homes were raided last September and those who refused to testify before a grand jury investigating us. Last May, we took up the defense of Carlos Montes, who is fighting six felony charges that were concocted by the same FBI agents who are after us.”

Speaking of the need to push back around other cases of government repression, Sundin stated:

“When this all began, I did not understand how long we would be waiting. In the Holy Land case, their office was raided in December 2001, the indictments came in June 2004, and the convictions came in November 2008, after a hung jury in a trial in 2007. Amina Ali and Hawo Hassan, the two Somali women who were just convicted here in Minnesota, had a long wait too. Their homes were raided in July 2009, and they weren’t indicted until August 2010. They were being spied on even after the raids on their homes, with wiretapped phone calls. It seems likely that this is true for us too.

“Ours is not just a Minnesota case – according to documents the FBI mistakenly left behind after raiding Mick’s apartment, six FBI offices in states across the country are involved. We know that prosecutors in both Illinois and Minnesota have a hand in this case. Our case is complicated, so I guess this means they’ll take all the time they can to piece together a case against us. They have called in some high-powered help: We learned at our conference that the prosecutor who went after the Holy Land directors has moved to Chicago and now he is working on our case.

“Supporting Noor’s father is the right thing to do – he was a good man doing good work. I believe the same for Amina Ali and Hawo Hassan. None of them should be facing prison sentences for sending aid to homelands ravaged by U.S. policies of war and militarism. At the same time, learning about their cases can help us in our own defense. I learned from the Somali women’s case that the government is willing to go the distance for a mere $8600. No doubt millions were spent to investigate and prosecute them. Before their case, I thought, gee, could the proceeds of my daughter’s lemonade stand for the Palestinian daycares really get us into trouble? Now I wonder.

“The government is not really targeting people for a few dollars sent abroad. They are targeting us for our ideas. It is not a crime to be a Palestinian or a Muslim, any more than it is a crime to be an anti-war activist or a socialist. But in all these cases, our ideas have brought us into conflict with the U.S. imperialist agenda. The government wants to prosecute us for our thoughts, thought crimes. None of this should make me, or Ghassan Elashi or Carlos Montes, or any of us a criminal.”

#MinneapolisMN #InJusticeSystem #ChicanoLatino #RacismInTheCriminalJusticeSystem #JessSundin #CarlosMontes #CommitteeToStopFBIRepression #MinnesotaCommitteeToStopFBIRepression #NoorElashi #HolyLandFoundation #HolyLandFive #PoliticalRepression

div id="sharingbuttons.io"/div]]>

<![CDATA[Justice for Amina Ali and Hawo Hassan

Faysal Mohamed, the husband of Amina Ali speaking at Dec. 3 forum")

Minneapolis, MN – About 100 people gathered for a “Speak Out in Support of the Somali Community” Dec. 3. The organizers were inspired to do the forum after the Oct. 20 conviction of Amina Ali and Hawo Hassan, two Somali American women who raised money for charities assisting Somalia’s poor. The women’s conviction was related to providing “material support to foreign terrorist organizations.” During jury deliberations, supporters of the women made it clear that the situation for people in Somalia was dire and that people required help for basic survival.

!--more--

“We feel it is important to educate people on the situation in Somalia that the women were trying to address,” said Jess Sundin, one of the event organizers, “but also to make this a call to people of conscience to work to stop the U.S. intervention in that country.”

Sponsored by the Minnesota Committee to Stop FBI Repression and the Minnesota Peace Action Coalition, the event brought together a broad cross section of the peace and justice movement, along with many Somali Americans.

Hassan Ali Mohamud, Director and Imam of the Minnesota Dawa Institute, condemned the unjust treatment of Ali and Hawo. He also warned of recent government moves to curtail the ability of Somalis in the U.S. to send money to their relatives in their homeland. He noted that about 3 million Somalis depend on these remittances for their survival. There will be local actions soon to save the Somali money transfer establishments, called hawalas.

Faysal Mohamed, the husband of Amina Ali, told of the hardships faced by his family with his wife in jail. Mohamed, who cares for the family’s two young daughters and bedridden mother-in-law, spoke movingly about taking his daughters to visit Ali in the Ramsey County jail, where the family could only communicate via closed circuit camera.

Attorney Bruce Nestor talked about the repression that is being unleashed on the Somali community and urged participants not to talk to the FBI. He brought out the fact that the government case was around the fundraising of a little over $8000 over the course of years, but that the feds spent millions of dollars, did hundreds of hours of wiretapping and involved many thousands of hours agents’ time in prosecuting the two women.

Nestor also made the point that if these laws were in effect in the 1980s and 90s, there could have been no anti-apartheid, Irish republican or Central America solidarity movements.

Mel Reeves, of the Minnesota Peace Action Coalition, spoke against U.S. intervention in Somali and in support of self-determination for the Somali people. He put out a clear call to resist cowing down to the government when they pass unjust laws and try to tell people what to think.

Both women were convicted of conspiracy to provide material support for a foreign terrorist organization. In addition, Ali was convicted of 12 counts of providing material support and Hassan was convicted of two counts of lying to FBI agents. Each count of providing material support to a foreign terrorist organization carries a 15-year sentence. On the day of the conviction, there were huge protests in Somalia over the women’s cases.

The women were accused of helping al-Shabab, an Islamist organization that fights to free Somalia from foreign domination.

Participants at the forum were urged to pack the courtroom for the sentencing of Amina Ali and Hawo Hassan. The sentencing is expected to happen in the early spring. Before that, there will be other actions and campaigns around the case. Donations to the legal defense fund for both women can be made and sent to: Amina Ali Legal Fund, 1860 Quarry Ridge Pl NW, Suite 126, Rochester, MN 55901.

“The witch hunt that the FBI is waging against the Somali community is very disturbing. They are using coercive tactics to scare people into talking, and then twisting words in a way that puts many in danger of persecution. Across the country, their tactics against the Arab and Muslim communities are unconscionable and it’s time we all get together to put a stop to this FBI abuse,” according to Steff Yorek, of the Committee to Stop FBI Repression. Yorek is a Minneapolis activist whose home was raided on Sept. 24, 2010, and who was served with a subpoena for a grand jury fishing expedition for ‘material support for foreign terrorist organizations.’

“The material support law is unjust and an attempt to criminalize people who support resistance to U.S. domination. We should never accept the idea that solidarity is some sort of crime,” states Mick Kelly, of the Committee to Stop FBI Repression.

The repression in the Somali community comes in the context of growing U.S. intervention in Somalia.

“The U.S. attacks on Somalia are ramping up in a big way,” says Joe Callahan of the Minnesota Peace Action Coalition. “The U.S. is sending in robot-drones to bomb and kill hundreds of people. Tens of thousands of troops, acting on the behalf of the U.S., from the African Union, Kenya and now Ethiopia are moving in to kill more.”

#MinneapolisMN #CommitteeToStopFBIRepression #MinnesotaPeaceActionCoalition #MinnesotaCommitteeToStopFBIRepression #Somalia #HawoMohamedHassan #alShabab #AminaAli

div id="sharingbuttons.io"/div]]>

The demonstration was initiated by the Minnesota Committee to Stop FBI Repression and endorsed by a wide range of local progressive organizations.

!--more--

Last fall, five Twin Cities homes and the offices of the Anti-War Committee were \raided by the FBI\ as part of the Department of Justice attack on anti-war activists.

Jess Sundin, one of the raided activists, said, “In his address to the American Legion, the president sought support for his policies of war. Outside the hall, protesters, including organizations of veterans and military families whose voices exposed the human costs of these wars, not only on the people of Afghanistan or Iraq, but also on the troops sent to fight these wars.”

She added, “We are coming out to protest because Obama’s policies of endless war and Wall Street bail outs have failed to meet the needs of the majority of people at home, while costing countless lives abroad. We stand up together to support our community members who have been targeted with repression for speaking out against these policies. We demand an end to attacks on activists, an end to U.S. wars, occupations and bombings around the world and we demand funding of human needs here in our own country.”

Angel Buechner spoke for the Welfare Rights Committee: “Instead of beating down the doors of activists who are standing up against these criminal wars, Obama should be beating down the doors of these filthy rich people who are making profits from the war and getting richer at our expense! Instead of spending precious resources to try to shut up those who oppose the U.S. government's foreign policy, Obama should be creating jobs, providing health care and housing for everyone in need.”

Mike Perkins of the Minnesota chapter of Military Families Speak Out stated, “We are here in support of our courageous friends of the Anti-War Committee and to ask President Obama to step up and remove the cloud that hangs over those who are being unjustly persecuted by the FBI for the crime of demanding peace and justice for all people. Our son went to Baghdad in January 2004 to find Iraq's WMD and protect us from them. Almost immediately he realized, as did most of his buddies, that there were no WMD’s in Iraq and all they were doing there was making more people who wanted to attack us. This made him angry because his friends were dying for no good reason. He lost two very close friends there - who are but two of the more than 4790 who have died so far in an unjust war started by dishonest politicians.”

After rallying at the Convention Center plaza, protesters moved to a nearby street where Obama’s departing motorcade was expected to pass. Protesters chanting, “From Colombia to Palestine, solidarity is not a crime,” were pushed about half a block from where they had assembled, but were still visible when the motorcade went by.

Endorsers included: the Anti-War Committee, Alliant Action, Communities United Against Police Brutality, Freedom Road Socialist Organization, MN Peace Action Coalition, MN Military Families Speak Out, MN Immigrant Right Action Committee, MN Iraq Vets Against War, Socialist Action, Socialist Alternative, Tackling Torture at the Top, TC Avengers, Twin Cities Peace Campaign, U of M Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), Veterans for Peace Chapter 27, WAMM, Welfare Rights Committee and the Women’s Student Activist Collective (U of M).

Banner drop from a near-by parking ramp")

![Linden Gawboy, of MN Committee to Stop FBI Repression in front of mounted polic](https://i.snap.as/v6ePqnPi.jpg "Linden Gawboy, of MN Committee to Stop FBI Repression in front of mounted polic Linden Gawboy, of MN Committee to Stop FBI Repression in front of
mounted police \(Fight Back!
