<![CDATA[Oshkosh, WI - On January 20, more than a dozen residents of Oshkosh gathered at Opera House Square downtown to protest the disastrous policies of the Trump administration since his inauguration two years ago. The rally was hosted by community group United Action Oshkosh (UAO).

!--more--

Braving the frigid Wisconsin winter weather, attendees held signs, flags and banners with messages of support for refugees, women, people of color, LGBTQ people, workers and students. Their voices cut through the air as the group chanted slogans like “We oppose Trump and Pence; they only serve the 1%” and “Racist, sexist, anti-gay; Donald Trump, go away!”

The event featured speakers or messages from UAO, Wisconsin Indivisible-06, Wisconsin Freedom Road Socialist Organization (FRSO), and Wisconsin Bailout the People Movement.

“I think holding rallies and marches is super important! It shows our city and country that we’ve not given up and we’re not backing down,” said UAO member Jessica Anderson. “If we don’t even try to attempt change, then nothing will ever change. I want everyone to know that we won’t tolerate racism, misogyny, homophobia, or transphobia in this country. Even the smallest of organizations and rallies can create big change, and this is where it all starts.”

After a message of solidarity from Wisconsin FRSO, participants took to marching up and down Main Street, making themselves heard with more chanting.

Back at the square, event leader Hollie Poupart homed in on the violence that is all-pervasive across the spectrum of Trump's hateful rhetoric and harmful policies. Instead of meeting with Trump, she helped to lead Glasgow's massive Pride march of 5000 people this weekend. The SNP’s depute leader, Keith Brown, before Trump’s visit said, “Scotland today stands united – with people from all backgrounds and all nations – against Donald Trump. We will send a message to Donald Trump that Scotland rejects the abhorrent treatment of little children on the U.S. -Mexican border. Scotland opposes his attempt to wreck the Paris Climate Agreement and his vilification of Muslims. We also oppose his barbaric language and treatment of women. Our message will be clear: Scotland rejects Trump’s politics of division and hatred and we stand with our friends in the U.S. who oppose him.”

As a result of Trumps visit, protests were held across Scotland including in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee and Aberdeenshire. The MN Anti-War Committee organizes a Human Rights Day protest every year, but Anti-War Committee member Jennie Eisert notes that this year organizers felt a pressing need for a protest for human rights, “We know that the anti-war movement needs to be a part of the growing movement against Trump and his agenda of bigotry and racism. We need to stand firm against his rhetoric of fear and hate both at home and abroad. We’ve heard his beating the drums of war to bomb the Middle East out of existence. We’ve already seen an increase in anti-Muslim hate crimes. We will not stand aside and wait to see what he has in store for this nation. We will be a part of the world’s voice in saying ‘No’ to Trump and we will continue to do so through his whole presidency!”

At the rally speakers from the Anti-War Committee, Black Lives Matter Saint Paul, People of Color Union Members, the MN Immigrant Rights Action Committee and the Council on American Islamic Relations spoke out against Trump’s promises of war, increased police powers, union bashing and anti-Muslim bigotry.

Marchers then took the streets on a cold, brisk day and got honks and cheers from folks in cars and on the sidewalks. But the Water Protectors understand and know the struggle is not over and the company will use every possible means to complete this $3.8 billion pipeline. And it will have the full support of Trump.” She concluded with, “We need jobs, healthcare, education and an end to racist police violence here at home, not U.S. wars abroad and not new pipelines.”

Craig Wood and Barry Reisch from Veterans for Peace Chapter 27 and JR Bobick, a leader in the Native Lives Matter movement, who had all recently returned from North Dakota also spoke about the human rights abuses they witnessed committed by the U.S. government at Standing Rock.

Stephanie Taylor from Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) at the University of Minnesota also spoke about the dangers of the upcoming Trump presidency, “Women have fought for centuries for control over our own bodies, especially when it comes to reproductive rights and we continue to struggle. Our movements will become emboldened to move this country forward – this is just a challenge and we will win!”

The event concluded with speakers from Saint Paul Public Schools who spoke out against the expansion of JROTC programs in their schools and from the Committee to Stop FBI Repression to encourage protesters to travel to Detroit for Rasmea Odeh’s upcoming trial on Jan. 10.

The Anti-War Committee called for everyone to mobilize to march with the immigrant rights movement in the twin cities on Jan. 20, Trump’s inauguration day.

The protest was organized by the MN Anti-War Committee and was endorsed by Black Lives Matter St. Paul, Blue Lies Matter, MN Immigrant Rights Action Committee, MN Neighbors for Justice, MN Peace Action Coalition, Natives Lives Matter, Native Lives Matter.org, Rad Azns, St. Paul for Justice, Welfare Rights Committee, Women Against Military Madness, Women's Prison Book Project, Veterans for Peace, UMN Students for a Democratic Society, and the Young Muslim Collective.

#MinneapolisMN #US #PeoplesStruggles #Racism #Minnesota #Antiracism #Antifascism #Elections #Trump #AntiTrump

div id="sharingbuttons.io"/div]]>

Hundreds in Tucson reject Donald Trump

<![CDATA[

Tucson, AZ - More than 300 people gathered on Nov. 12, joining the wave of protests across the country with loud and clear messages of rejection of the new president-elect Donald Trump and his agenda of right-wing hate and repression.

!--more--

The protest was organized by the local immigrant rights action committee L.U.P.E. and began at 4 p.m. in downtown’s Armory Park, where people gathered with signs and strong sentiments of support and solidarity. One of the organizers of the event, Edward C. Tolentino, said in the opening words, “Donald Trump ran on a platform of increasing militarization of the border and expanding mass deportations and family separations. As an immigrant rights organization, we denounce these attacks and are ready to stand side by side with our immigrant sisters and brothers to defend their right to justice and equality.”

As a border town, Tucson has been rightly declared an immigrant-friendly city. Given its local experiences fighting back against racist laws like SB1070 and the poli-migra - local police and border patrol collaboration - communities and local organizations are ready to continue the struggle against Donald Trump and any new internal repressive attacks that seek to harm or separate families in our communities.

After opening statements, the rally was energized with chants of “Dump Trump, not our president!” and “Said it loud, say it clear, immigrants are welcome here.” Chicano student and organizer of the event Bryan Orozco said, “It is clear that the new president-elect does not represent the interests of the multinational working class people of Tucson. We are indigenous, Chicanos, Mexicanos and we will stand together to defend nuestra cultura y nuestra gente.”

Former tribal leader of the Tohono O’otham nation David Garcia also spoke, saying, “The Tohono O’otham nation is a 75-mile international boundary. If Trump wants to beef up militarization, what happens down here will determine what happens on all parts of the border. Native nations are also affected by the nasty border policy.”

The rally proceeded to march through downtown Tucson’s historic Congress Street chanting, “Who’s streets, our streets,” and “No Trump, no KKK, no fascist U.S.A”, arriving at the federal courthouse, where the federal immigration program Operation Streamline takes place.

Undocumented activists, students and organizers took to the microphone to relay the harmful effects this immigration program has on the community. L.U.P.E member and organizer Stteffanny Cott declared, “Operation Streamline is responsible for processing, without due process, hundreds of immigrants a week, charging them with federal felonies to incarcerate them in for-profit prisons. Their only crime is being undocumented. These programs are immoral and inhuman and must be stopped.”

Dreamer and local activist Josue Saldivar shared his personal experiences as an undocumented youth and said, “I stand here today undocumented and unafraid. I have been and continue to be defined by a status and a piece of paper but we will continue to fight for the right we all have to be here with our families.”

A brief open mic session allowed community members to share theirs thought and feelings about the event and the current political situation of the country, before marching back to Armory Park where the protest finalized with a unity applause.

#TucsonAZ #Elections #DumpTrump #AntiTrump

div id="sharingbuttons.io"/div]]>
