So, it happened. The racist, reactionary fool Donald Trump is returning to the White House, and Republicans will dominate Congress. The polarization of American political life is sharpening and deepening. Revolutionaries and progressives have some heavy lifting ahead of us.

There is going to be plenty of time to analyze what happened in the election, but on the morning after, some things are clear. The leadership and wealthy backers of the Democratic Party have only themselves to blame for the outcome. The Harris/Walz campaign was tone-deaf to the needs and aspirations of working people. In fact, the two words that they seemed unable to work into any of their speeches were “working class.” Instead, they offered a sad mixture of genocide in Palestine, combined with an appeal to college-educated, “never Trump” Republicans. And they failed.

This election was not about good choices. From the viewpoint of FRSO and the anti-war movement, it was a referendum on genocide in Palestine and a broader war in the Middle East. For many, the economy was the main issue. At day’s end, the rotten choices available to us stand as an indictment of the capitalist system.

We need to understand that major attacks are coming. The labor movement will come under fire and there will be attempts to erode our standard of living. The bigots in DC will do what they can to promote inequality and there will be attacks on oppressed nationalities, including Black people, Chicanos and Latinos, Asian Americans, Arab Americans and others. The rights of immigrants are going to be a special target. There is a crude women-hating misogyny in Trump-world, and we can expect further moves to restrict our reproductive rights. Likewise, we can expect attacks against LGBTQ people. And the genocide in Palestine will continue under Trump.

The good news is that this war on the people is not going to be one-sided. It is entirely possible and necessary to build strong popular movements that are capable of serious resistance. This is not the time to keep our heads down. It’s time to unite all who can be united to defeat Trump’s reactionary agenda. The test is not how many bad things we can say about him—he is a reactionary piece of garbage, so we will say plenty. But the real challenge in front of us is how many people we can put into the streets. To those who feel a little down or demoralized, we can offer the hope of resistance. We have the capacity to fight and win.

The U.S. empire is in decline and Trump is a symptom. We are going to build the struggle. We are going to strengthen the people’s organizations and show some backbone in the trade unions. We are not going back. We are going forward, and we are going to do that with as many people as possible. Together, we can make this country ungovernable!

Milwaukee, WI – Former President Trump returned to Milwaukee this past Friday, November 1, to speak at a rally at the Fiserv Forum, the same venue where he accepted the Republican presidential nomination during the Republican National Convention (RNC).

Once details of Trump’s visit were made public, the Milwaukee organizations who helped lead the Coalition to March on the RNC rallied together for an emergency protest to say no to Trump. Trump’s reactionary agenda stands against multiple movements that have a strong home in Milwaukee – anti-police crimes, reproductive justice, anti-war, labor, student, and Palestinian liberation.

Speaking to the question of reproductive justice, Allison Smith of Reproductive Justice Action – Milwaukee, stated, “we don’t want a man with a documented history of sexual misconduct. We want to remind him, and everyone else, that we did not stand idly by when our rights were stripped away in 2022, and we will not be silent now. We are committed to doing everything in our power to push back against right-wing attacks on reproductive healthcare and the healthcare system at large.”

Progressive elements of the labor movement have largely united against Trump on account of his prioritization of CEOs rather than workers and his vile attempts at sowing division among workers. While dividing the working class isn’t unique to Trump, his reliance on reactionary rhetoric has emboldened the reactionary elements of the U.S. population. Jacob Flom of the Milwaukee Area Labor Council made this point clearly, stating, “the labor movement stands for everything that Trump is against. Trump has tried to pit workers against each other by fostering anti-immigrant and anti-LGBTQ hate.”

With all the hatred Trump and his supporters have voiced against working and oppressed peoples, the imperative to take a firm stand against it and fight back became another consistent theme in the remarks of Friday night’s speakers. Speaking on behalf of the Milwaukee Antiwar Committee, Eva Dickenson, stated, “Trump’s comments on Palestinians have been sickening. He’s promised to put pro-Palestinian protesters like us in jail, and he has said that he wants to finish the job. No matter what he tries, he will never kill our spirit of resistance.” Aurelia Ceja, co-chair of the Milwaukee Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression, carried a similar message forward, explaining “we’re united to show that Milwaukee is a fighting city.”

A Trump presidency will require mass organizations capable of standing up against the multiple attacks on various movements. Trump has made it clear that he’s an enemy of the people, and the only antidote against him will be mass movement. Speaking to the importance of organizing, Audari Tamayo of Freedom Road Socialist Organization stated, “We recognize the ballot box as an arena of struggle, but we say that the best way to fight reactionaries like Trump and his supporters is right here in the streets. Trump represents the U.S. empire in decline, but this system won’t fall on its own or through the ballot box. The real hammer of change will be socialism built by the working and oppressed people!”

Tuesday’s election is quickly approaching, and for the people of Milwaukee, the road ahead is one of struggle.

Milwaukee has become a must-visit location for Republicans and Democrats given the city’s significance for the Wisconsin vote, which will play a key role as a swing state. Regardless of the outcome, it will be up to the people of Milwaukee to fight like hell for what they need and deserve. Friday offered a small glimpse into how the progressive movements of Milwaukee intend on standing together post-election.

FRSO urges our members and supporters to take to the streets and organize the broadest possible protests the day after the November 5 elections. No matter what the outcome, we must continue to stand with Palestine and oppose the ever-widening U.S./Israel war in the Middle East. And we must advance a progressive agenda that defends the rights of immigrants, workers, LGBTQ people, women’s and reproductive rights.

It’s true that Harris is a facilitator of the genocide in Palestine, and that Trump is a racist, reactionary fool. Neither of them deserves a vote or support, and it is important that we are in the streets on November 6 saying that we will continue the fight for justice. We cannot rest.

We know that the protests will be larger if Trump wins or declares himself the winner, so it’s important that we try to unite all who can be united. We don’t have to agree with everyone we march with, but we do need to get as many people as possible into the streets. Regardless of the outcome, we want the strongest possible response.

The future is unwritten, there are things that we can be certain of and things we can certainly do. We will continue to support Palestine and demand an end to all aid to Israel. We will advance the struggle for peace, justice and equality. And we will continue to build the people’s struggle, taking as many people possible as far as they will go.
