Chicago, IL – Los aficionados del equipo de la liga mayor el Chicago Fire le mandaron un mensaje a los dueños del equipo de que los fanáticos no tolerarán el racismo por parte de los guardias de seguridad hacia los fanáticos latinos. El Sector latino es un grupo compuesto primordialmente por jóvenes mexicanos que apoya al Chicago Fire. Desde su fundación en 2005 han sido tratados diferente en comparación de otros grupos de aficionados en el Toyota Park, el estadio que alberga al Fire. Ellos se han quejado de inspecciones agresivas y de ser perseguidos por guardias de seguridad en el estadio.

En el último juego en casa el equipo les vendió boletos a familias para la sección que normalmente está reservada para los grupos de apoyo, quienes generalmente se paran y animan durante todo el partido. Las familias trataron de sentarse en la sección que permanece de pie. La seguridad respondió mandando a sacar al Sector latino fuera de su sección, en la cual ellos poseen boletos de temporada, para así culpar al grupo. Durante este incidente, miembros del Sector fueron ofendidos con comentarios racistas por parte de los guardias de seguridad. Los guardias también trataron de provocar peleas con los jóvenes.

La organización de aficionados del Chicago Fire forman parte de una Asociación independiente de aficionados llamada la Sección 8. El liderazgo de los diferentes grupos tuvieron una reunión para formular una respuesta al hostigamiento. Previas reuniones con la administración sobre los problemas no produjeron resultados.

Los grupos distribuyeron folletos a los aficionados sobre lo que iba a ocurrir y porqué. Otra reunión fue fijada con la administración del equipo. Se les ofreció una reunión con las estrellas del equipo a los líderes de la Sección 8, pero la administración del Fire descartó los cargos de hostigamiento racial. El grupo continúo con su plan de acción.

El 16 de agosto, cientos de camisetas que decían “Sector Latino” fueron distribuidas a los aficionados que llegaban al juego. Cuando el juego comenzó, cuatro pancartas enormes que decían, “Fire: Detén el racismo” en inglés y en español fueron desplegadas. La seguridad las confinó y confiscó mientras la muchedumbre clamaba su desacuerdo.

Durante el primer tiempo del partido los aficionados estuvieron sentados y no animaron. El silencio del Sector 8 no podía ser pasado desapercibido, los aficionados generalmente se paran, animan, cantan y gritan sus lemas. Entonces solo el Sector latino se paró y animó en español. Esto era de lo habían sido culpables después de todo. Tan pronto como el segundo tiempo del partido comenzó todos los aficionados se pararon y animaron durante el resto del partido.

Después del juego los aficionados del Sector latino y la Sección 8 salieron juntos, los verdaderos ganadores por haberse mantenido en solidaridad y oponerse al racismo.

Bridgeview, IL – Fans of the Chicago Fire major league soccer team sent the team owners a message that the fans will not tolerate racism from security guards towards Latino fans. Sector Latino is a Chicago Fire supporter group which is made up primarily of Mexican youth. Since their founding in 2005, they have been treated differently than the other supporter groups at Toyota Park, the home stadium of the Fire. They’ve complained of aggressive searches and being followed around the stadium by security guards.

At the last home game the team sold tickets to families for a section which is normally reserved for the supporter groups, who generally stand and cheer the whole game. The families attempted to sit in the standing section. Security responded by sending the Sector Latino out of their section, in which they are season ticket holders, to accommodate the mistake on the part of the team. During this incident, Sector members were called “wetbacks” and “spics” by the security guards. The guards also attempted to provoke fights with the youth.

The organized fans of the Chicago Fire are part of an Independent Supporters Association called Section 8. The leadership from the various groups held a meeting to form a response to the harassment. Previous meetings about the problems with Fire management and the park produced no results.

The groups passed out flyers to fans about what was going to occur and why. Another meeting was set with the team management. The Section 8 leaders were offered a meeting with the stars of the team, but Fire management dismissed their charges of racial harassment. The group went ahead with their plan of action.

On Aug. 16, hundreds of T-shirts which said “Sector Latino” were distributed to fans entering the game. When the game began, four huge banners were unraveled that said, “Fire: Stop the racism” in English and Spanish. Security swarmed down on the banners and confiscated them as the crowd roared its disapproval.

During the first half of the game the fans sat down and didn’t cheer. The silence from Sector 8 couldn’t be missed, as these fans generally stand, cheer, sing and chant for the whole game. Then only Sector Latino stood up and cheered in Spanish. This is all they had been guilty of all along. As soon as the second half of the match started all the fans stood up and cheered the rest of the game.

After the game the fans of Sector Latino and Section 8 marched out together, true winners for having stood in solidarity to oppose racism.
