Mexico's unions fight to stop anti-worker labor law reform

<![CDATA[On Sept. 1 Mexico’s outgoing President Felipe Calderon of the National Action Party (PAN) proposed a massive reform to Mexico’s federal labor law. The proposal would modify over 100 articles of Mexico’s labor law.

!--more--

Calderon’s proposal is also supported by president-elect Enrique Peña Nieto of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), whose election is still being disputed due to widespread allegations of vote-buying and fraud. Both the PAN and the PRI are right-wing parties. Mexico’s labor law has some progressive aspects that were included in the constitution that was written in 1917 in the aftermath of the Mexican revolution. The current right-wing reforms seek to undermine those progressive parts of Mexican labor law.

The proposed reform is being pushed quickly through the Chamber of Deputies, the lower house of Congress, with a vote in the full chamber slated to happen as early as Sept. 27.

Unions in Mexico are strongly opposed to the anti-union and anti-worker reforms and have been mobilizing massively to stop them.

Among other things, the proposed reforms would legalize subcontracting and temporary contracting of workers to allow companies to avoid paying into social security for their workers; would make it easier for companies to fire workers; and under the guise of the “flexibility of the workday” the minimum wage and the eight-hour workday would essentially be gutted, though these are both supposed to be guaranteed in Article 123 of Mexico’s constitution. The new reforms would make it increasingly difficult for workers to retire with a dignified pension. They would make it harder for workers to take legal action against their employer. Finally and perhaps most importantly, the reforms would restrict collective union contracts, limit the autonomy of unions, and would restrict the right to strike.

#Mexico #union #EnriquePenaNieto #PRI #FelipeCalderon #PAN #Americas

div id="sharingbuttons.io"/div]]>

!--more--

#SaintPaulMN #Mexico #MORENA #MovimientoRegeneracionNacional #AndresManuelLopezObrador #EnriquePenaNieto #PRI #Americas

div id="sharingbuttons.io"/div]]>

<![CDATA[MORENA Minnesota protest, July 7, 2012")

Saint Paul, MN - The Minnesota chapter of the National Regeneration Movement (MORENA) organized a protest at the Mexican consulate here on July 7, protesting reportedly widespread fraud in the Mexican presidential election that took place on July 1. There are widespread reports of buying of votes, ballot irregularities, and other types of fraud. The July 7 protest in St. Paul coincided with massive protests in Mexico and elsewhere on the same day.

!--more--

In the election on July 1, Enrique Peña Nieto was quickly declared the winner by the mass media and the Federal Electoral Institute (IFE). Peña Nieto was the candidate of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), the party that ruled Mexico for 71 years until 2000, and was known for widespread corruption and violence to hold on to power in service of the interests of the rich. The PRI negotiated the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) with the U.S. and Canada. When NAFTA was imposed in 1994, it devastated Mexican agriculture, throwing millions into poverty and feeding a massive wave of migration of Mexicans to the United States in the 1990s and 2000s. The PRI was also responsible for massacres such as at Acteal massacre in Chiapas in 1997 and the Tlatelolco massacre of large numbers of student protesters during the 1968 Olympics in Mexico.

The PRI lost elections for the first time in 2000 to another neo-liberal party, the National Action Party (PAN). If the currently announced election results stand, Peña Nieto’s election will return the PRI to power. This was the focus of MORENA’s protest, against what they call the imposition of Peña Nieto.

Andres Manuel López Obrador ran against Peña Nieto this year, uniting several forces to try to defeat the two neo-liberal parties (PRI and PAN).
