Maha Nassar, activista, educadora, madre y ex-prisionera política, visitó los Estados Unidos como parte de una gira para hablar del trabajo que ella hace como líder de los Comités de la Unión de Mujeres Palestinas. Maha Nassar nos comparte sus años de experiencia trabajando por la libertad y resistencia Palestina ante la ocupación Israelí. Ella habla, llana y sencillamente sobre donde ha estado el movimiento y hacia donde debe encaminarse. Los Comités de la Unión de Mujeres Palestinas es uno de los grupos más importantes que trabaja para la justicia social en Palestina. Un país donde por la justicia se pelea con piedras en contra de tanques blindados, las palabras deben de ser armas y el conocimiento poder. ¡Lucha y Resiste!: ¿Cuáles son algunas de las condiciones que enfrentan las mujeres Palestinas?

Maha Nassar: Las mujeres Palestinas, siendo parte de la sociedad, están involucradas en la lucha y están también sujetas a toda clase de opresión por parte del gobierno Israelí, tales como los retenes militares, confiscación de tierras, matando a nuestros niños y niñas, destruyendo las escuelas y siendo arrestadas. Esto es parte de las condiciones que enfrentamos.

Las mujeres Palestinas también enfrentan la visión tradicional sobre las mujeres en nuestra sociedad, la que considera que las mujeres somos segunda o tercera clase en nuestra sociedad. Estamos desafiando a los grupos fundamentalistas y su visión del papel que las mujeres deben jugar. De alguna manera, algunos olvidan el papel que jugamos, el cual es muy importante en la lucha nacional en su conjunto, especialmente durante las dos intifadas (levantamientos).

El tercer punto es la situación legal de las mujeres. Las leyes de nuestra sociedad se inclinan más en favor del hombre, lo cual obliga a las mujeres a luchar por cambiarlas. Las mujeres necesitan presentar iniciativas para nuevas leyes que protejan a las mujeres de cualquier tipo de intimidación y violencia, por los derechos de los trabajadores, la familia y los derechos civiles en general.

¡Lucha y Resiste!: ¿Cómo hace su organización para hablar con las mujeres sobre estos temas?

Maha Nassar: Primero que nada nuestra organización se preocupa y trabaja duro para elevar la conciencia de las mujeres en lo tocante a la lucha social y nacional, porque creemos que los tres factores de opresión, lo económico, social y nacional que pesan sobre las mujeres, están interrelacionados.

El primer paso que damos con las mujeres es organizar charlas, talleres y cursos de entrenamiento para atraerles a las mujeres en las aldeas y barrios pobres. El segundo paso es tratar de crear oportunidades de trabajo para las mujeres, para que sean económicamente independientes y por lo consiguiente, socialmente independientes. De esta manera pueden involucrarse más en la lucha nacional. También tenemos programas de liderazto para que las mujeres jóvenes sean las futuras líderes, las entrenamos en diferente níveles tales como litigantes, crear redes, habilidades en computación, asesoría social y de salud, para que de esta manera sean capaces de expresar su preocupación por las mujeres y la lucha nacional de una forma major.

Los Comités de la Unión de Mujeres Palestinas tienen programas de asistencia en caso de emergencia. Auspicio familiar le provee a más de 350 familias apoyo mensual para ayudarles a sobreponerse a la deteriorante situación económica. No creemos en la caridad ni somos una organización caritativa. Creemos que las mujeres deben de encontrar trabajo en lugar de buscar caridad.

También, organizamos centros de cuidado infantil, porque esto le quita un gran peso de encima a las mujeres, especialmente a las mujeres pobres. Al tener a sus niños en un centro de cuidado infantil donde les enseñan principios democráticos, derechos humanos y de género, las mujeres tendrán tiempo de ir a su trabajo, plantar, y para ellas mismas.

¡Lucha y Resiste!: ¿Dada la dura represión por parte del régimen israelí, que significa ser un activista durante la intifada?

Maha Nassar: El gobierno israelí no cree que la lucha social es separada de la lucha nacional, por lo tanto, persiguen a todos los activistas sociales, porque no saben que los resultados de su trabajo van a tener incidencia en la lucha nacional. Estoy hablando de aquellos activistas que están afiliados a organizaciones políticas y de base o de masas, no de aquellas que están afiliadas a intelectuales, académicos y organizaciones caritativas. Por consiguiente, nuestros activistas en los comités de la Unión de Mujeres Palestinas, así como mujeres activistas que están afiliadas a otras organizaciones políticas son perseguidas por la ocupación.

Yo fuí arrestada muchas veces durante la primera intifada por mis actividades políticas en favor de las mujeres. También estuve bajo arresto domiciliario. Y como otro ejemplo, han hecho prisionera a la esposa de Ahmed Saadat (el Secretario General del Frente Popular por la Liberación de Palestina). Esto es una forma de presión hacia su esposo y porque ella es una mujer activista.

Ser un activista en la lucha nacional y social es lo mismo, y debes de saber que vas a ser encarcelada, perder tu libertad de movimiento, e incluso estar a merced de las balas de la ocupación cuando llevas comida, medicina o ropa a las áreas que están cerradas. De igual manera, debes de estar lista a dar más de tu tiempo a la causa de tu gente y estar siempre lista a responder a cualquier emergencia que ocurra. Tienes que estar lista a correr los riesgos que esto implica.

¡Lucha y Resiste!: ¿La administración Bush ha propuesto un nuevo plan de “paz”, llamado el Mapa de Ruta (Road Map). Que piensas de este plan?

Maha Nassar: Cuando Bush propuso este plan de paz, era obvio que nuestra gente iba a rechazarlo. No es una cuestión de emociones; es una cuestión de conocimiento, ya que incluso nuestros niños saben que el gobierno de los Estados Unidos ha suplido los aviones F16 y helicópteros Apache a israel. Ellos saben que estos aviones son usados por los Israelíes para terminar con la vida de los niños, y que los proyectiles son manufacturados en los Estados Unidos. Entonces, es obvio, sin necesidad de un prolongado análisis político, que el Primer Ministro Palestino, Mahmoud Abbas, es una herramienta en las manos del gobierno de Estados Unidos e Israel.

El Mapa de Ruta es solamente una forma de brindar seguridad a israel y no toma en consideración ninguno de los derechos del pueblo Palestino que señalan las resoluciones de las Naciones Unidas: tales como el derecho a tener un estado, el derecho al retorno, Jerusalem como capital de Palestina, y la libertad de los prisioneros políticos; y un fin a la confiscación de tierras, construcción de asentamientos y robo de recursos no renovables tales como el agua. El estado Palestino que propone el Mapa de Ruta, el que todavía no tiene fronteras, y que supuestamente va a ser establecido en el 2005. Eso es solamente una forma de ganar tiempo para el gobierno de israel, para así crear realidades sobre el mapa que harán imposible la lucha por Palestina.

¡Lucha y Resiste!: ¿Como está respondiendo el movimiento Palestino a este Mapa de Ruta?

Maha Nassar: Desde el principio, los Palestinos empezaron a manifestarse en contra del Mapa de Ruta porque ninguna de las promesas del primer ministro Palestino fueron llevadas a cabo. La gente empezó a escribir consignas en las paredes y gritando en las manifestaciones pidiendo por la renuncia del primer ministro debido a su incapacidad para negociar. Lo criticaban por dejar de un lado el derecho al retorno y le pedían que tomará una posición firme con respecto a los prisioneros políticos.

La Autoridad Palestina debe de dejar en libertad a los prisioneros, especialmente al Secretario General del Frente Popular, y a sus compañeros quienes están en prisiones Palestinas bajo la vigilancia de soldados Americanas y británicos. Esto es vergonzoso porque el gobierno Palestino esta supuesto a ser democrático y de respeto a las diferentes afiliaciones ideológicas de los Palestinos. Mantener al histórico líder del movimiento nacional en la cárcel y confiscando armas simples de la gente es el papel de la Autoridad Palestina. La Autoridad Palestina esta haciendo esto para quedar bien con la fuerza de ocupación. Esta situación está causando más y más descontento hacia las practicas del sistema de seguridad y llevando al pueblo Palestino ha hacer la revolución en contra de esta ocupación.

¡Lucha y Resiste!: ¿Porque estas en los Estados Unidos?

Maha Nassar: Estoy aquí para hacer conciencia sobre nuestra causa como pueblo Palestino y el movimiento de las mujeres Palestinas, y su papel en la lucha social y nacional a través de reuniones con diferentes representantes, grupos, asociaciones, y manifestaciones públicas. Estoy aquí para tratar de aclarar que nuestra resistencia no es terrorismo. Terrorismo es la práctica que es lidereada por el estado organizado con un sector militar muy desarrollado en contra de la sociedad civil y con el apoyo de los poderes globales, el cual es la peor cara del colonialismo.

De manera que estoy aquí para hacerle saber al pueblo de los Estados Unidos como hechos reales que las mujeres Palestinas no somos lo que dicen los medios de comunicación, que no tenemos corazón o sentimientos. Por el contrario, las mujeres Palestinas luchan por terminar con la ocupación porque ellas tienen corazón, y no se preocupan tanto de ellas como del cuidado y del futuro de sus niños. Las madres sufren diariamente cuando ven a sus niños subyugados a diferentes formas de humillación y rechazo, pero lo que aumenta su miedo a las consecuencias sicológicas que tendrán que enfrentar se como adultos. Las mujeres Palestinas son amantes de la paz y no pueden ser fácilmente engañadas por soluciones parciales para poner fin a la causa Palestina.

¡Lucha y Resiste!: ¿Qué puede hacer el sector progresista en los Estados Unidos para apoyar su trabajo en particular, y la resistencia Palestina en general?

Maha Nassar: Cuando el pueblo de los Estados Unidos presione a su gobierno para que cambia su política externa de aterrorizar y matar niños palestinos, esto hará una gran diferencia en las mujeres Palestinas. Pues, el apoyo de las mujeres del mundo les están dando forma a la esperanza de una paz legítima.

La gente progresista en los Estados Unidos deben de apoyar los diferentes proyectos de las mujeres, a través de los cuales estarán ayudando a nuestra sociedad, tales como escuelas pre-escolares y el derecho a reclamar y litigar. Los progresistas de acá deben hacer un llamado por la inmediata libertad de todos los prisioneros políticos y deben crear medios alternativos de información que contrasten con los medios masivos de este país.

Fight Back!: What are some of the conditions faced by Palestinian women?

Maha Nassar: Palestinian women, being part of the society, are involved in the struggle, and are also subject to all the oppression by the Israeli government – such as check points, confiscation of land, killing our children, destroying the schools and being arrested. So this is one part of our conditions.

Palestinian women are also confronting the traditional view of women in our society, which considers women to be second or third class in our society. We are challenging the fundamentalist groups and their views of women and their roles. To an extent, some forget our role, which is very important in the whole national struggle, especially during both intifadas.

The third point is the legal situation for women. Laws in our society are biased towards men, so women have to struggle to change the laws. Women need to initiate new laws that protect women from any kind of discrimination and violence, and for workers' rights and family and civil rights.

Fight Back!: How does your organization, the Union of Palestinian Women's Committees, work with women to address these issues?

Maha Nassar: First of all, our union is concerned and works hard to raise the consciousness of women on the national and social struggle, because we believe the three factors of oppression – economic, social and national – that lay on women are interrelated.

The first step we take with women is to organize a lot lectures, workshops and training courses to address women in villages and the poor neighborhoods. The second step is our union tries to create opportunities for women to work, so they can be economically independent – so that they can be socially independent. Then they can be more involved in the national struggle. We also have leadership programs for the young women to become leaders in the future by training them on different levels like advocacy, networking, computer skills, social advising and health advising, so that they can be able to reflect their concerns for women and the national struggle in a better way.

The Union of Palestinian Women's Committees has emergency relief programs. Family sponsorship provides more than 350 families monthly support that can help them overcome the deteriorating economic situation. We do not believe in and we are not a charity organization. We believe that women should find jobs rather than look for charity.

We also organize kindergartens, because it lifts a big burden from women, especially poor women. By having their children in a kindergarten, where they taught the principles of democracy, human rights and gender, women will have the time to go to their work, or to plant, or even to find time for herself.

Fight Back!: Given the heavy repression by the Israeli regime, what is it like to be an activist during the intifada?

Maha Nassar: The Israeli government does not believe that the social struggle is split from the national struggle and they target all social activists because they know their energy is going to be brought in to the national struggle. I'm talking here about those activists who are affiliated with political organizations and mass-based organizations, not those affiliated with intellectuals, academics and charitable organizations. So our activists in the Union of Palestinian Women's Committees and women activists that are affiliated to other political organizations are targeted by the occupation.

I myself was arrested several times during the first intifada for women's politically related activities. I was also under house arrest. And as another example, they have imprisoned the wife of Ahmed Saadat [the General Secretary of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine] because they want to pressure her husband and because she is a woman activist.

To be an activist in the national and social struggle is the same, and you have to expect to be jailed, lose freedom of movement, or even to be subjected to bullets of occupation when you are going to bring food, medicine or clothes to a closed area. You should also expect to give most of your time to the cause of your people and to be always ready to respond to any call for any emergency that takes place. You should be ready to take the risk of doing that.

Fight Back!: The Bush administration has proposed a new 'peace' plan, called the Road Map. What do you think of this plan?

Maha Nassar: When Bush proposed this peace plan, it was obvious that our people were going to reject it. It's not a matter of emotions; it is a matter of knowledge, since even our children know that the U.S. government supplies the airplanes, F16 and Apaches, to Israel. They know that these airplanes are used by the Israelis to end our children's lives. And the rockets are American manufactured. So it's obvious, without a prolonged political analysis, that the first Palestinian prime minister, Mahmoud Abbas, is a tool in the hands of the Americans and Israelis.

The road map is only a way to bring security to Israel and does not take into consideration any of the rights of the Palestinian people that were acknowledged by the UN resolutions – such as the right to have a state, the right of return, Jerusalem as a capital and releasing prisoners; and the stopping of land confiscation, building settlements and stealing water resources. The Palestinian state proposed by the road map – which has no borders yet and that is supposed to be in established 2005 – is only a matter of gaining time for the Israelis to create realities on the map that will make it impossible for the Palestinians to struggle.

Fight Back!: How is the Palestinian movement responding to the Road Map?

Maha Nassar: From the beginning, Palestinians started demonstrating against the Road Map because none of the promises of the new Palestinian prime minister were achieved. People started writing slogans on the walls and shouting at demonstrations calling for the prime minister to resign because of his poor negotiating. They were criticizing him for giving up the right of return and asking him to take a step forward on the political prisoners.

The Palestinian Authority should release the prisoners, especially the General Secretary of the Popular Front, Saadat, and his comrades who are kept in Palestinian jails under the watch of American and British soldiers. This is shameful, because the Palestinian government is supposed to be democratic and respect the different ideological affiliations of Palestinians. Keeping the historical leader of the national movement in jail and confiscating simple weapons from people is the role of the Palestinian Authority. The Palestinian Authority is doing this to please the occupier. This is raising more and more anger towards the practices of the Palestinian security system, and moving Palestinian people towards revolution against this authority.

Fight Back!: Why are you in the U.S.?

Maha Nassa r: I'm here to raise the consciousness about our cause as Palestinian people and the Palestinian women's movement, and its role in both the national and social struggle through meetings with different representatives, groups and associations and public meetings. I am here to try to make clear that our resistance is not terrorism. Terrorism is the practice that is led by the organized state with a well-developed military against civilians and by the support of the global powers, which is the worst face of colonialism.

I am also here to let the U.S. people know as a fact – Palestinian mothers are not like what is said about us in the mass media – as being with no hearts or feelings. On the contrary, Palestinian women struggle to end occupation because they have hearts, and don't care about themselves as much as they care about the future for their children. Mothers suffer daily when they see their children subject to different kinds of humiliation and neglect, which raises their fear about even their psychological situation when they become older. Palestinian women are peace seekers and cannot be easily deceived by partial solutions of ending the Palestinian cause.

Fight Back!: What can progressive people in the U.S. do to support your work in particular, and the Palestinian resistance in general?

Maha Nassar: When the people in the U.S. pressure their government to change their external policies to terrorize and kill the children of Palestine, it makes a big difference to Palestinian women, that women around the world are supporting them and are giving them the hope of a legitimate peace.

Also, progressive people in the U.S.A. should support the different projects of women; through which they are helping the society, such as kindergartens and advocacy. Progressives here should call for the immediate release of all political prisoners and they should make an alternative media to the ongoing mainstream media.
