Los Ángeles, CA – Yo me reuní brevemente con Elvira Arellano el 18 de agosto en la plaza de la Iglesia Católica en Los Ángeles, después de nuestra marcha por los derechos de los inmigrantes en el Centro de la ciudad. Yo estaba muy cansado, pero al reunirme con ella y Saulito, ellos me emocionaron y me inspiraron.

Ella es una mujer muy fuerte, comprometida por la justicia de 12 millones de inmigrantes indocumentados viviendo bajo los ataques de la administración del presidente Bush. Nosotros pasamos un momento feliz hablando de cómo podemos organizar a Los Ángeles y de la historia de los chicanos aquí, por ejemplo las caminatas que hicieron en el este de los Ángeles. Ella había visto la película de HBO sobre los estudiantes chicanos que luchaban por una mejor educación. Saulito, el hijo de Elvira, me preguntó quien era chicano, y yo le respondí que él era chicano.

El siguiente día Elvira, Saul, Emma Lozano y el Reverendo Slim Coleman pasaron el domingo en la iglesia con las masas de la comunidad inmigrante en Los Ángeles. Ellos se fueron de la iglesia a la 1:30 de la tarde para ir a otras iglesias santuarios, pero a una cuadra después cuatro carros del departamento de Homeland Security, con casi diez agentes armados, los detuvieron y arrestaron a Elvira. Una nueva red unida se ha formado incluyendo la Coalición 25 de Marzo, CHIRLA y los Líderes Religiosos. Ellos llamaron a una protesta masiva el 25 de agosto en Los Ángeles, conjunta con la llamada nacional para protestar en Washington D.C. el 12 de septiembre, la cual también urge un paro laboral y económico a nivel nacional.

Elvira estuvo refugiada en un santuario en Chicago por más de un año para no ser deportada o separada de su hijo. Ella se ha convertido en un símbolo de esperanza e inspiración para millones de inmigrantes y para el movimiento de los derechos de los inmigrantes que lucha por la legalización y la igualdad de derecho.

Los Angeles, CA – I met Elvira Arellano briefly on Aug. 18, at Los Angeles’s Placita Catholic Church, after our pro-immigrant rights march in downtown. I was tired but meeting her and her son Saulito energized and inspired me.

She is a strong woman committed to justice for the 12 million undocumented immigrants living under the attacks of the Bush administration. We spent a few happy moments talking about the organizing in L.A. and Chicano history like the East Los Angeles Walkouts. She has seen the HBO movie about the Chicano students’ fight for better education and liked it. Her son Saulito asked me who was a Chicano, I responded that he was.

The next day Elvira, Saul, Emma Lozano and Reverend Slim Coleman spent Sunday at the church masses with the immigrant community of Los Angeles. At about 1:30 p.m. they left the church to travel to other sanctuary churches, but a block away four cars from the Department of Homeland Security, with about ten armed agents, stopped and arrested her. By 10:00 p.m. she was deported to Tijuana, Mexico. In Tijuana she has stated that she will continue her struggle for legalization and justice for immigrant families.

Her arrest was condemned by the entire immigrant rights movement and has led to unity of those demanding her return, legalization now and an end to raids, detentions and deportations. A new united front network has come into being that includes March 25 Coalition, and CHIRLA and religious leaders. They have called for a mass march on Aug. 25 in Los Angeles, endorsed the national call to protest in Washington D.C. Sept. 12 and urge a national labor and economic boycott.

Elvira had been in sanctuary in Chicago for over a year, not willing to be deported or separated from her son. She has become a symbol of hope and inspiration for the millions of immigrants and the immigrant rights movement that fight for legalization and equal rights.

Chicago, IL – A hundred supporters of Elvira Arellano and her son Saul gathered here, Aug. 19, in the pouring rain outside the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) building. They were protesting the arrest and detention of Elvira earlier that day in Los Angeles. At a 10:00 p.m. emergency press conference, they demanded her freedom and to know her current location and status.

Arellano had been in sanctuary in Chicago for over a year, refusing to be deported or separated from her son. In addition to support for Elvira Arellano and Saul, the crowd chanted support for amnesty and legalization for all 12 million undocumented immigrants. Speakers urged an end to deportations and especially for the need to keep families united.

The demonstration was another clear example of how this courageous family has become the symbol of the powerful immigration movement. Many people brought their children out to the event and one of the speakers was crying because of her intense connection to the family. This connection brought everyone to chant, “¡Elvira, hermana, el pueblo está contigo!” (“Elvira, our sister, the people are with you!”) People left at 10:45 in order to go home and spread the word about the next day’s protest.
