Los Angeles, CA – Thousands of supporters from South LA, along with multiple political forces, continued to denounce the killing of 29-year-old Dijon Kizzee by the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department (LASD) at a protest on September 12. Kizzee was shot 20 times by deputies from LASD’s South LA station for an alleged vehicle code violation that ended in a fatal altercation on August 31. Kizzee’s family called for murder charges against the sheriff deputies responsible for his death.

Organized by Coalition for Community Control of Police, Black Lives Matter-LA and several other organizations, the action started at the site where deputies shot and killed Kizzee. Protesters then marched through the neighborhood until arriving at a nearby intersection next to the sheriff's station. They were met with sheriffs in riot gear who blocked the main road of Imperial Highway with barricades and military vehicles.

Several families who have lost their sons to police killings denounced the LA County Sheriffs and LAPD. The groups called for prosecution of the police, the ousting of LA’s District Attorney Jackie Lacey, and voting Trump out in the 2020 November elections. Carlos Montes with Centro CSO spoke of the unity and solidarity that exists between the Blacks and Chicanos. He called for community control of the police and Black power, saying that once Black people are free, we will all be free!

Since the killing of Dijon Kizzee, actions at the South LA station have ranged from press conferences to protests. The South LA County South LA Sheriff's station has met these organized and spontaneous actions with violent repression and has shot teargas, rubber bullets and flashbangs at participants, including journalists and photographers. Participants have compared deputy repression to a warzone. In a few instances, the sheriffs declared the protests an unlawful assembly within five minutes, which they used as justification to instigate violence and ultimately ambush and arrest protesters for being present or “looking like protesters.” Sheriff press conferences have labeled protesters as “outside agitators'' to further divide and confuse the public on the actions occurring at the station.

Los Angeles, CA – Black Lives Matter-Los Angeles called for justice for Dijon Kizzee at their weekly “DA Jackie Lacey Must Go” protest, September 2. Many families, victims of LAPD and LA sheriff killings and brutality, as well as organizations like Centro CSO, gathered outside of the offices of Sheriff Alex Villanueva and Los Angeles District Attorney Jackie Lacey.

Dijon Kizzee was shot over 20 times in South LA on the evening of August 31, over an unspecified vehicle code violation while riding a bicycle with a bundle of clothes. In the police version, Kizzee dropped a handgun when the altercation turned violent. Deputies allege he attempted to reach for the gun while on the ground, which provoked them to execute him.

Dijon’s former girlfriend made her first appearance at the protest with yellow tape from the crime scene wrapped around her and a poster board with pictures dedicated to Dijon while the crowd chanted, “We support you,” “We’re here with you” and “We love you.”

Marina Vergara, the sister of Daniel Hernandez who was killed by LAPD in 2020, also spoke at the protest. “We need to take away their qualified immunity and get rid of Jackie Lacey,” said Vergara. “My brother was in a vehicle accident that did not merit him being executed on April 22. There was no mention that he pointed a gun at them, no mention of firing the weapon at them. They use the excuse that they are afraid for their lives; then quit because you're a coward.”

Los Angeles, CA – Spontaneous protests continued throughout September 1 after the killing of 29-year-old bicyclist Dijon Kizzee, who was shot by sheriffs of South LA Station who claimed there was an unspecified vehicle code violation. One group occupied the 110 North Freeway and others protested at the site where he was killed.

The shooting of Kizzee occurred on Monday evening, August 31. Earlier in the day a sheriff whistleblower, Art Gonzalez, testified that deputy Miguel Vega, who killed 18-year-old Andres Guardado in Gardena was “ink chasing” to join the Executioners gang that functions within the Compton Sheriff’s station.

A number of gangs exist among LA County Sheriffs who continue to kill Blacks, Chicanos and Central Americans.

Today, September 2, at the Hall of Justice at 3 p.m. Black Lives Matter-Los Angeles is calling for justice for Dijon Kizzee at their weekly Jackie Lacey Must Go protest. Many victims’ families of police and sheriff brutality will participate, as well as organizations like Centro CSO.

Los Angeles, CA – On the night of August 31, Dijon Kizzee who was 29 years old, was riding his bicycle. Two sheriff deputies allege that Kizzee was violating vehicle codes but have not said which ones specifically. They began to follow him and Kizzee got off his bicycle, ran, and the two deputies shot and killed him at the scene. The deputies claim Kizzee punched one of them, dropped a bundle of clothes, and upon inspecting the clothes bundle, found a handbag, and a gun inside the bag. The deputies are claiming this is when they decided to open fire on Kizzee.

A 100-person protest and march outside of the South LA Sheriff’s station on Imperial Highway immediately broke out. Families of other Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department (LASD) victims united with the protesters including Lisa Vargas, mother of Anthony Daniel Vargas (killed by LASD August 12, 2018) and Leah Garcia mother of Paul Rea (killed by LASD June 27, 2019). Protesters were demanding justice for Dijon Kizzee amid continued recent deaths of Black people like George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, the recent attack on Jacob Blake, and the continued killings in LA at the hands of the Los Angeles Police Department and LASD.

More actions will occur tonight and Fight Back! will be on the scene.
