Los Ángeles, CA – Miles de trabajadores, estudiantes y pequeños comerciantes latinos se fueron a la huelga en apoyo a la huelga económica estatal en California el 12 de diciembre, 2003. La Mexican-American Political Association (MAPA) y Hermandad Mexicana-Latinoamericana llamaron al boicot , que fue apoyado por centenares de grupos para protestar la anulación de SB 60, la ley que otorgaba licencias a los indocumentados.

La ley de licencias fue promulgada en octubre de 2003, y después anulada por el nuevo gobernador Arnold Schwarzenegger bajo la amenaza de la iniciativa de la derecha. Grandes manifestaciones tuvieron lugar en San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego y otras ciudades para apoyar la huelga. Los estudiantes en altos números faltaron a las escuelas. La escuela Roosevelt en Boyle Heights tuvo mas de 1,700 estudiantes que, por su ausencia, apoyaron la huelga. Los 1,500 trabajadores de American Apparel cerraron la planta por un día. Ademas ese día fue seleccionado por que es el día en que los mexicanos mundialmente celebran a la Virgen de Guadalupe, el símbolo indígena de la resistencia a la colonización y la explotación.

La huelga exitosa ha dado energía a la gran comunidad latina en California y ha recibido apoyo de muchos otros estados.

El centro comunitario CSO encabezó una marcha y mitin en el corazón de Boyle Heights en el Este de Los Angeles, donde muchos negocios cerraron el día. La marcha y mitin fueron endorsados por Latinos Against the War, SEIU LOcal 660, Roosevelt High School Revolutionary Students, Comité Pro Uno, Casa Bohemia Show en KPFK, y LA Answer. Iniciándose en Prospect Park con el rompimiento de un a piñata revestida de Arnold, los madres, familias, trabajadores y estudiantes marcharon gritando a coro ¡Sí a las licencias, No a la guerra! ¡Escuela, no guerra¡ y ¡Terminen al terminador! La marcha fue encontrada por un grupo entusiasta de 300 trabajadores que venían de La Placita, se juntaron y marcharon al centro de Los Angeles para otro mitin al aire libre.

El mitin cerca de la Roosevelt incluyó a muchos estudiantes y maestros más, quienes rompieron otra piñata del gobernador Arnold, como un golpe simbólico en contra del racismo, la explotación y la guerra imperialista. Los acontecimientos fueron cubiertos por los medios en español e inglés.

La lucha por las licencias ha durado mas de 6 años y es una importante demanda para los millones de trabajadores indocumentados que necesitan manejar al trabajo, de compras y a la escuela. Las comunidades latinas conocen en carne propia las injusticias de que les manden sus coches al corralón, los arrestos y las multas constantes por parte de la policía. Los latinos ya de por sí encaran la explotación y las condiciones de racismo, además del acoso constante por la INS y la policía. Trabajos mal pagados y malas condiciones de vivienda son la norma, especialmente para los indocumentados que carecen de trámites para la residencia.

Bajo el liderazgo de Hermandad Mexicana-latinoamericana y su presidente Nativo López y el senador Gil Cedillo (antiguo líder del SEIU) SB 60 finalmente fue promulgado como ley en noviembre de 2003. Sin embargo, el partido derechista y racista del gobernador electo Arnold el terminador prometieron la destitución de la nueva ley SB 60. Bajo la amenaza de Ron Price, un racista de derecha, que propuso una iniciativa estatal para poner fuera de la ley permanentemente las licencias para los indocumentados, el Senador Cedillo acordó bajo presión quitar la ley con la condición verbal de que una versión más estricta se introdujera en 2004. Lo que le criticaban a la ley era la falsa idea que sería mas fácil para que los terroristas adquirieran cédulas.

La comunidad inmigrante y latina ahora están mas concientes de su fuerza colectiva y han planeado una cumbre organizadora para la semana de febrero 21, en Pitzer College, Claremont para unificarse alrededor de una estrategia y planes de acción a favor de las demandas, campañas políticas y una marcha masiva para octubre del 2004. La marcha será conmemorativa de la marcha histórica en 1994 de 150,000 en contra de la iniciativa también racista de la propuesta 187. Apoyamos este llamamiento para construir un amplio frente único de organizaciones mexicanas-chicanas para construir un movimiento que luche por y haga realidad la igualdad, legalización, y amnistía para los mexicanos y todos los inmigrantes. Esto es parte de la larga historia del pueblo mexicano-chicano en la lucha por la igualdad, la democracia y la autodeterminación en el suroeste que llamamos Aztlán.

La comunidad latina se encuentra bajo ataques de los derechistas como Ron Price y bajo constantes amenazas de las leyes republicanas racistas que favorecen la deportación, mientras tratan de convertirnos en chivos expiatorios, culpándonos de la crisis económica y calumniándonos de terroristas. Los latinos tenemos una larga historia de resistencia en contra del racismo, la guerra y la explotación. Lo latinos continuaremos luchando y dando nuevos líderes y organizaciones para construir un gran movimiento por la auto-determinación.

Los Angeles, CA – Thousands of Latino workers, students and shopkeepers stayed away from work and school Dec. 12, in support of the statewide Latino Economic Strike. The Latino Economic boycott was called by the Mexican American Political Association and Hermandad Mexicana Latino Americana, with the support of hundreds of other organizations, to protest the repeal of SB 60, the law that allowed undocumented immigrants to get drivers licenses.

The license law was passed in October 2003. It was later repealed by the new Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, under the threat of a right-wing led anti-license initiative.

Large demonstrations were held in San Francisco, San Jose, Fresno, Los Angeles, San Diego and other cities to support the strike. High numbers of students boycotted school from San Diego to Los Angeles to San Jose. Statewide, school districts reported high absentee rates. Los Angeles’s Roosevelt High School in Boyle Heights had over 1700 students absent in support of the strike. 1500 workers at American Apparel, the largest apparel manufacturer in Los Angeles, shut down the plant for the day. Dec. 12 was also selected because it is the day Mexicans worldwide honor the religious Virgin de Guadalupe – the indigenous symbol of resistance to colonization and exploitation.

The successful strike energized the large Latino community throughout California and received wide support in many other states.

Action in East L.A.

The Centro CSO – Community Service Organization – led a march and rally in the heart of Boyle Heights, East Los Angeles, where many small businesses closed for the day. The march and rally was endorsed by Latinos Against War, SEIU Local 660, Roosevelt High School Revolutionary Students, Comite Pro Uno, Casa Bohemia Show on KPFK and L.A. ANSWER.

The march started at Prospect Park with a busting of a piñata of Arnold Schwarzenegger. Mothers, families, workers and students marched, chanting “Yes to licenses, not to war! School not war!” and “Terminate the terminator.” The march was met by another group of 300 enthusiastic workers coming from La Placita. All the groups then rallied together and marched to downtown L.A. for another rally.

Another afternoon rally near Roosevelt High School included many more students and teachers who busted another piñata of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, striking a symbolic blow against racism, exploitation and imperialist war. The English and Spanish media covered the events extensively.

Struggle for Licenses

The struggle for licenses has lasted over six years and is an important demand for millions of undocumented workers who need to drive to work and school. Latino communities know too well the hardships of the constant ticketing by police, getting cars impounded and arrests. Latinos already face exploitation and hard racist conditions, including INS and police harassment, low paid jobs and bad living conditions – especially for recent immigrants without residency paperwork.

Finally, with the leadership of Hermandad Mexicana Latino Americana, its president Nativo Lopez and Senator Gil Cedillo (a former SEIU union leader), SB 60 was made into law during the state recall election of November 2003.

But the racist Republican Party and Governor-elect Arnold Schwarzenegger promised to repeal the new SB 60 law.

Under threat of a statewide ballot initiative to permanently outlaw drivers licenses for undocumented workers, an effort led by the right-wing racist Ron Price, Senator Cedillo agreed under pressure to repeal the law, with a verbal agreement for a new stricter version of the driver license legislation to be introduced in early 2004.

Some critics of the law bought the lie that this law would make it easier for terrorists to get identification.

New Power

The Latino and immigrant communities have now sensed the strength of their collective power and are demanding amnesty, legalization and equality, along with the demand for licenses. Moderate groups like CHIRLA (the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles) did not support the Latino Economic Strike.

Activists formed the Organizing Committee of Mexican Organizations, and have planned a major summit for the weekend of March 12-14, at Pitzer College in Los Angeles County. The purpose of the summit is to unite around a plan of action for demands, campaigns and a mass march on October 16, 2004. That date will commemorate the historic 1994, 150,000-person march by Latinos against the racist 187 initiative.

The Latino community is under attack by right-wingers like Ron Price and under constant threats from racist laws and deportations, as we become the scapegoats for the economic crisis and so-called threats of terrorism. But Latinos also have a long history of resistance against racism, war and exploitation. We Latinos will continue to fight back and provide the leadership and organization to build a powerful movement for self-determination!
