La manifestación fue organizada por La Red Multi-étnica de Trabajadores Inmigrantes (MIWON) para protestar y luchar contra el aumento de los ataques contra los inmigrante después de los ataques del 911 (11 de septiembre). MIWON se enfocó en los derechos de los inmigrantes aunque no asoció el reciente aumento en los ataques, a la guerra actual de Los Estados Unidos contra Afganistán y los arrestos y deportaciones de árabes, palestinos y sur-asiáticos. La consigna del Centro CSO condenó la guerra de Los Estados Unidos contra la gente del medio oriente y exigió ¡La amnistía inmediata para todos los inmigrantes!

Después de los ataques del 911 en Nueva York, la policía y el INS, han aumentado los ataques contra los inmigrantes con persecuciones, arrestos y deportaciones. Por ejemplo, en Los Ángeles el INS o como se le conoce en la comunidad latina “la migra “, ha llevado a cabo repetidas incursiones en el aeropuerto y ha arrestado a trabajadores y a personas que se encontraban viajando. También han sido despedidos y arrestados muchos trabajadores del aeropuerto de Los Ángeles y San Francisco. El aumento de la vigilancia en la frontera, ha causado innumerables muertes y a recrudecido los abusos contra los inmigrantes que buscan cruzar hacia el norte a través de la frontera con California y el desierto de Arizona. Además, la crisis económica ha causado y aumentado los despidos en el sector hotelero y las industrias de turismo, donde se sabe que muchos inmigrantes indocumentados trabajan. Esto, aunado al aumento de los ataques contra los inmigrantes, ha llevado a la intensificación del racismo y la opresión contra los mexicanos, chicanos y las familias centro y suramericanas.

El Centro CSO le dio gran importancia a esta marcha de mayo 1 para unirse a la protesta por la legalización de los inmigrantes y para acabar de una vez por todas con la persecución contra los inmigrantes. Apoyamos la formación de un movimiento militante masivo por los derechos de los inmigrantes y por la auto-determinación de los mexicanos, chicanos y latinoamericanos en Los Estados Unidos, en especial en esta región del suroeste, mejor conocida como Aztlán.

Marching down Broadway, past City Hall and the LA Police Department headquarters, the militant protest arrived at the Federal Building for a huge rally. The march included a contingent from the Centro Community Service Organization (Centro CSO), Hermandad Mexicana and other Mexican/Chicano groups. Many Asian and Central American groups joined the protest march.

The march and rally, organized by Multi-ethnic Immigrant Workers Organizing Network (MIWON), was to fight the increase in anti-immigrant attacks after Sept. 11. MIWON focused on immigrants' rights, but did not link the recent increase in attacks to the U.S. war against Afghanistan and the many arrests and deportations of Arab, Palestinian, and South Asian people. The Centro CSO contingent banner condemned the U.S. war against the people of the Middle East and demanded “Amnesty for all immigrants now!”

After Sept. 11, the police and INS have increased attacks against immigrants through raids, arrests and deportations. In Los Angeles, the INS, or “migra” as it is known in the Latino community, raided the airport, arresting workers and people traveling. This has been repeated at airports across the country.

On the border with Mexico the rise of anti-immigrant violence and more surveillance has caused many deaths, as people try to cross through the California and Arizona deserts.

In addition, the economic crisis has meant more layoffs in hotel, service and tourism industries, where many immigrants work. This, coupled with the increase in immigrant attacks, has led to the intensification of racism and oppression against Mexican/Chicano and Central American families.

The Centro CSO holds it was very important to join the May 1 march with the demand for legalization and to stop immigrant bashing. Said one member, “We support the building of a mass militant movement for immigrants' rights and self-determination for Mexican/Chicano people in the Southwest U.S., which we call Aztlan.”
